Using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method, thickness dependent magnetic anisotropy of ultrathin FeCo alloy films in the range of 1 monolayer (ML) to 5 ML coverage on Pd(0 0 1) surface has been explored. We have found that the FeCo alloy films have close to half metallic state and well-known surface enhancement in thin film magnetism is observed in Fe atom, whereas the Co has rather stable magnetic moment. However, the largest magnetic moment in Fe and Co is found at 1 ML thickness. Interestingly, it has been observed that the interface magnetic moments of Fe and Co are almost the same as those of surface elements. The similar trend exists in orbital magnetic moment. This indicates that the strong hybridization between interface FeCo alloy and Pd gives rise to the large magnetic moment. Theoretically calculated magnetic anisotropy shows that the 1 ML FeCo alloy has in-plane magnetization, but the spin reorientation transition (SRT) from in-plane to perpendicular magnetization is observed above 2 ML thickness with huge magnetic anisotropy energy. The maximum magnetic anisotropy energy for perpendicular magnetization is as large as 0.3 meV/atom at 3 ML film thickness with saturation magnetization of . Besides, the calculated X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) has been presented.  相似文献

The layer resolved magnetic moments and magnetic anisotropy energy of Fe/Co superlattices and multilayers with bcc (0 0 1) and (1 1 0) orientations obtained from first principles simulations are reported here. The magnetic moment of Fe atoms are found to depend on the geometry, coordination number and proximity to Co atoms, whereas that of Co remains almost constant in the superlattices and multilayers. Mixing of atoms at the interface resulted in enhanced Fe magnetic moment while that of Co is unaffected. The magnetic anisotropy energy in superlattices and multilayers are found to be larger than the corresponding values of bulk counterparts. Calculated easy axis of magnetization is in the plane for all superlattice compositions considered in the study, while that in multilayers, changes with crystalline orientation and thickness of Co layers.  相似文献

We present experimental results on the structural and magnetic properties of series of Fe thin films evaporated onto Si(1 1 1), Si(1 0 0) and glass substrates. The Fe thickness, t, ranges from 6 to110 nm. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) have been used to study the structure and surface morphology of these films. The magnetic properties were investigated by means of the Brillouin light scattering (BLS) and magnetic force microscopy (MFM) techniques. The Fe films grow with (1 1 0) texture; as t increases, this (1 1 0) texture becomes weaker for Fe/Si, while for Fe/glass, the texture changes from (1 1 0) to (2 1 1). Grains are larger in Fe/Si than in Fe/glass. The effective magnetization, 4πMeff, inferred from BLS was found to be lower than the 4πMS bulk value. Stress induced anisotropy might be in part responsible for this difference. MFM images reveal stripe domain structure for the 110 nm thick Fe/Si(1 0 0) only.  相似文献

The electrical properties and interface chemistry of Cr/6H-SiC(0 0 0 1) contacts have been studied by current-sensing atomic force microscopy (CS-AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Cr layers were vapor deposited under ultrahigh vacuum onto both ex situ etched in H2 and in situ Ar+ ion-bombarded samples. The Cr/SiC contacts are electrically non-uniform. Both the measured I-V characteristics and the modeling calculations enabled to estimate changes of the Schottky barrier height caused by Ar+ bombardment. Formation of ohmic nano-contacts on Ar+-bombarded surfaces was observed.  相似文献

Electronic, magnetic and structural properties of atomic oxygen adsorbed in on-surface and subsurface sites at the two most densely packed iron surfaces are investigated using density functional theory combined with a thermodynamics formalism. Oxygen coverages varying from a quarter to two monolayers (MLs) are considered. At a 1/4 ML coverage, the most stable on-surface adsorption sites are the twofold long bridge sites on the (1 1 0), and the fourfold-hollow sites on the (1 0 0) surface. The presence of on-surface oxygen atoms enhances the magnetic moments of the atoms of the two topmost Fe layers. Detailed results on the surface magnetic properties, due to O incorporation, are presented as well. Subsurface adsorption is found unfavored. The most stable subsurface O, in tetrahedral positions at the (1 0 0) and octahedral ones at the (1 1 0) surface, are characterized by substantially lower binding than that in the on-surface sites. Subsurface oxygen increases the interplanar distance between the uppermost Fe layers. The preadsorbed oxygen overlayer enhances binding of subsurface O atoms, particularly for tetrahedral sites beneath the (1 1 0) surface.  相似文献

Electronic and magnetic properties of the fcc americium (0 0 1) surface have been investigated via full-potential all-electron density-functional electronic structure calculations at both scalar and fully relativistic levels. Effects of various theoretical approximations on the fcc Am (0 0 1) surface properties have been thoroughly examined. The ground state of fcc Am (0 0 1) surface is found to be anti-ferromagnetic with spin-orbit coupling included (AFM-SO). At the ground state, the magnetic moment of fcc Am (0 0 1) surface is predicted to be zero. Our current study predicts the semi-infinite surface energy and the work function for fcc Am (0 0 1) surface at the ground state to be approximately 0.82 J/m2 and 2.93 eV respectively. In addition, the quantum size effects of surface energy and work function on the fcc Am (0 0 1) surface have been examined up to seven layers at various theoretical levels. Results indicate that a three layer film surface model may be sufficient for future atomic and molecular adsorption studies on the fcc Am (0 0 1) surface, if the primary quantity of interest is the chemisorption energy.  相似文献

The regular CO overlayers at coverage θ = 1/3 adsorbed on the (0 0 0 1) surface of hcp Co and (1 1 1) surface of fcc Co are studied by first-principles density-functional theory with the exchange-correlation component in the PBE form. Adsorption in atop, bridge, and three-fold hcp or fcc position are considered. The adsorption energies, CO stretching frequencies, geometry, work function, and local magnetic moments are studied, and, when possible, compared with experimental or theoretical data. Particularly, we show that the recently proposed correction to adsorption energy of CO prefers correctly the atop adsorption site, whereas the remaining sites are almost degenerate in energy. The CO molecule lowers magnetization on neighbouring Co atoms, and the effect decreases with the adsorption site coordination. We show, however, that this trend is not the result of the different C-Co separation at different adsorption sites. A very small magnetic moment appears on CO that couples antiferromagnetically to Co. Most results are very similar for the Co(0 0 0 1) and Co(1 1 1) surfaces.  相似文献

Crystalline magnesium oxide (MgO) (1 1 1), 20 Å thick, was grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on hydrogen cleaned hexagonal silicon carbide (6H-SiC). The films were further heated to 740 °C and 650 °C under different oxygen environments in order to simulate processing conditions for subsequent functional oxide growth. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness and stability of crystalline MgO films and the MgO/6H-SiC interface for subsequent heteroepitaxial deposition of multi-component, functional oxides by MBE or pulsed laser deposition processes. The stability of the MgO films and the MgO/6H-SiC interface was found to be dependent on substrate temperature and the presence of atomic oxygen. The MgO films and the MgO/6H-SiC interface are stable at temperatures up to 740 °C at 1.0 × 10−9 Torr for extended periods of time. While at temperatures below 400 °C exposure to the presence of active oxygen for extended periods of time has negligible impact, exposure to the presence of active oxygen for more than 5 min at 650 °C will degrade the MgO/6H-SiC interface. Concurrent etching and interface breakdown mechanisms are hypothesized to explain the observed effects. Further, barium titanate was deposited by MBE on bare 6H-SiC(0 0 0 1) and MgO(1 1 1)/6H-SiC(0 0 0 1) in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the MgO as a heteroepitaxial template layer for perovskite ferroelectrics.  相似文献

The structure, energetics and magnetic properties of the quasihexagonal reconstruction of the Ir(1 0 0) surface and nanostructures formed by Fe atoms on this surface have been investigated using first-principles density functional theory with generalized gradient corrections. We find the reconstructed (1 × 5) surface to be 0.10 eV/(1 × 1) area lower in energy than the unreconstructed surface and we demonstrate that first-principles calculations can achieve quantitative agreement with experiment even for such long-period and deep-going reconstructions. For Fe coverage of 0.4 monolayers (ML) we have studied the stripe-like structure with biatomic Fe rows placed in the troughs of the (1 × 5)-reconstructed surface. Results of nonmagnetic calculations agree well with the structure inferred from STM data. Higher Fe coverages lead to a de-reconstruction of the Ir substrate. At 0.8 ML coverage a surface compound with composition Fe4Ir is formed, which shows an appreciable buckling. In this case, a ferromagnetic calculation leads to good agreement with the low-temperature LEED data. We predict that the (1 × 5) periodicity of the mixed interface layer will persist also in thicker films with a pure Fe surface. Films with 1-4 ML Fe are predicted to be tetragonally distorted and ferromagnetic, with an axial ratio corresponding well to an elastic distortion of the Fe lattice.  相似文献

The spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy from ultrathin Cr films on Fe(1 1 0) is investigated by means of first-principles electronic structure and photoemission calculations. The antiferromagnetic ordering in the Cr films leads in dependence on film thickness to a rapidly decreasing and oscillating photoelectron spin polarization, in reasonable agreement with recent experiments (Dedkov (2007) [1]). The oscillation period is explained by quantum-well states in the Cr film and by a Fermi surface nesting vector. The importance of transition matrix elements is highlighted. The findings point to a noncollinear magnetic structure at the Fe/Cr interface.  相似文献

All electron full potential calculations based on spin density functional theory are performed to study cubic zincblende (ZB) and hexagonal NiAs structures of bulk CrTe, free (0 0 1) surfaces of ZB CrTe, and interface of ZB CrTe with ZnTe(0 0 1). The ferromagnetic NiAs structure is reported to be about 0.26 eV more stable than the ferromagnetic ZB phase while ZB CrTe is found to be a half-metallic ferromagnet with a half-metallic gap of about 2.90 eV. Thermodynamic stability of CrTe(0 0 1) surfaces are studied in the framework of ab-initio thermodynamic. The obtained phase diagram evidences more stability of the Te terminated surface compared with the Cr termination. We discuss that both Te and Cr ideal terminations of CrTe(0 0 1) retain bulk-like half-metallic property but with a reduced half-metallic gap compared with bulk value. The structural, electronic, magnetic, and band alignment properties of the ZB CrTe/ZnTe(0 0 1) interface are computed and a rather large minority valence band offset of about 1.09 eV is observed in this heterojunction.  相似文献

Following the experimental work of Groudeva-Zotova et al. [S. Groudeva-Zotova, D. Elefant, R. Kaltofen, D. Tietjen, J. Thomas, V. Hoffmann, C.M. Schneider, J. Magn. Magn. Mater. 263 (2003) 57] where the magnetic and structural characteristics of a bi-layer NiMn-Co exchange biasing systems was investigated, density functional calculations with generalized gradient corrections were performed on (Mn0.5Ni0.5)n ordered alloy on Co(0 0 1) and one Mn1−xNix monolayer on Co(1 1 1). For the Mn0.5Ni0.5 monolayer on Co(0 0 1), magnetic moments per surface atom of 0.65 μB and 3.76 μB were obtained for Ni and Mn, respectively. Those magnetic moments are aligned parallel to the total moment of Co(0 0 1). A complex behavior of the Mn moment in dependence of the thickness “n” is obtained for (Mn0.5Ni0.5)n on Co(0 0 1). Investigations on Mn1−xNix monolayer on Co(1 1 1) have shown that the crystallographic orientation does not modify significantly neither the magnetic moments of Mn and Ni atoms nor their ferromagnetic coupling with the Co(1 1 1) substrate, except for x = 0.66. For x = 0.66 the Mn sub-lattice presents an antiferromagnetic coupling leading to a quenching of the Ni magnetic moment.  相似文献

The atomic structure of the Au/Si(1 1 1)-(5 × 2) surface has been studied by density-functional theory calculations. Two structure models, proposed experimentally by Marks et al. and Hasegawa et al., have been examined on an equal ground. In our total-energy calculations, both models are found to be locally stable and energetically comparable. In our electronic-structure analyses, however, both models fail to reproduce the key features of angle-resolved photoemission spectra and scanning-tunneling-microscopy images, indicating that the considered models need to be modified. Suggestions for the modification are given based on the present calculations.  相似文献

Coverage-dependent adsorption energy of the Ge/Ru(0 0 0 1) growth system and the geometrical distortions of the most stable adsorption structure are investigated through first-principles calculations within density functional theory. A local minimum in adsorption energy is found to be at a Ge coverage of 1/7 monolayer with a Ru(0 0 0 1)- symmetry. Based on this stale superstructure, the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) images are simulated by means of surface local-density of states (LDOS). The results are consistent well with the STM measurements on the phase for Ge overlayer on Ru(0 0 0 1). From this stimulation, the relations between the STM images and the lattice distortion are also clarified.  相似文献

A new structural model with fluctuant Si-trimers and missing Si-adatom is proposed for Si-terminated 6H-SiC(0 0 0 1)(3 × 3) reconstruction. The atomic and electronic structures of the model are studied using first principles pseudopotential density-functional approach. The calculated surface electronic density of states coincides quantitatively with the experimental results of photoemission and electron energy loss spectroscopy. Based on the calculations, the Patterson map and scanning tunneling microscopic (STM) images simulated for the new model agree more satisfactorily with the experimental X-ray diffraction and STM observations than that for previously proposed models. The calculations of formation energies suggest that the new structure would be formed under the environment of dilute Si vapor around the surface in the preparation process.  相似文献

The stability of spin-spiral and domain wall structures in an Fe monolayer on a W(1 1 0) substrate is theoretically investigated. By analyzing the exchange parameters obtained from first principles total energy calculations, we find that a competition between the nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic and long-distant antiferromagnetic exchange interactions leads to a stabilization of the spin-spiral structures. When the strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) arising from the Fe/W(1 1 0) interface is introduced, however, the formation of the spin-spiral structures is suppressed and the ground state appears to be the ferromagnetic state—as observed in experiments. In addition, the strong MCA is found to play a key role in determining the domain wall structures.  相似文献

Co(0 0 0 1)hcp/Fe(1 1 0)bcc epitaxial magnetic bi-layer films were successfully prepared on SrTiO3(1 1 1) substrates. The crystallographic properties of Co/Fe epitaxial magnetic bi-layer films were investigated. Fe(1 1 0)bcc soft magnetic layer grew epitaxially on SrTiO3(1 1 1) substrate with two type variants, Nishiyama–Wasserman and Kurdjumov–Sachs relationships. An hcp-Co single-crystal layer is obtained on Ru(0 0 0 1)hcp interlayer, while hcp-Co layer formed on Au(1 1 1)fcc or Ag(1 1 1)fcc interlayer is strained and may involve fcc-Co phase. It has been shown possible to prepare Co/Fe epitaxial magnetic bi-layer films which can be usable for patterned media application.  相似文献

Electronic and magnetic properties of the zincblende CrSb(0 0 1) surfaces and its interfaces with GaSb(0 0 1) and InAs(0 0 1) semiconductors are studied within the framework of the density-functional theory using the FPLAPW+lo approach. We found that the Cr-terminated surfaces retain the half-metallic character, while the half-metallicity is destroyed for the Sb-terminated surfaces due to surface states, which originate from p electrons. The phase diagram obtained through the ab-initio atomistic thermodynamics shows that at phase transition has occurred. Also the half-metallicity character is preserved at both CrSb/GaSb and CrSb/InAs interfaces. The conduction band minimum (CBM) of CrSb in the minority spin case lies about 0.63 eV above that of InAs, suggesting that the majority spin can be injected into InAs without being flipped to the conduction bands of the minority spin. On the other hand the CrSb/GaSb interface has a greater valence band offset (VBO) compared with the CrSb/InAs interface and the minority electrons have lower contribution in the injected currents and hence more efficient spin injection into the GaSb semiconductor. Thus the CrSb/GaSb and CrSb/InAs heterojunctions can be useful in the field of spintronics.  相似文献

We report first principles calculations to analyze the ruthenium adsorption and diffusion on GaN(0 0 0 1) surface in a 2×2geometry. The calculations were performed using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) with ultrasoft pseudopotential within the density functional theory (DFT). The surface is modeled using the repeated slabs approach. To study the most favorable ruthenium adsorption model we considered T1, T4 and H3 special sites. We find that the most energetically favorable structure corresponds to the Ru- T4 model or the ruthenium adatom located at the T4 site, while the ruthenium adsorption on top of a gallium atom (T1 position) is totally unfavorable. The ruthenium diffusion on surface shows an energy barrier of 0.612 eV. The resultant reconstruction of the ruthenium adsorption on GaN(0 0 0 1)- 2×2 surface presents a lateral relaxation of some hundredth of Å in the most stable site. The comparison of the density of states and band structure of the GaN(0 0 0 1) surface without ruthenium adatom and with ruthenium adatom is analyzed in detail.  相似文献

The structure and magnetism of thin epitaxial Fe layers grown on Cu(0 0 1) is investigated by grazing scattering of fast H and He atoms. Information on the atomic structure of the film and substrate surfaces is obtained by making use of ion beam triangulation with protons. The magnetic behavior is studied via the polarization of light emitted after capture of spin-polarized electrons into excited atomic terms during scattering of He atoms. For the formation of bcc(1 1 0)-like Fe films at higher coverages, we detect differences in structural and magnetic properties for room and low temperature growth. We suggest that the crystalline structure depends on the film morphology and that Cu impurities affect the magnetic properties.  相似文献
