This article studies the homological properties of generalized group algebra L 1(G, A) of a locally compact group G over a Banach algebra A with an identity of norm 1. It is shown that if L 1(G, A) is right continuous then G is finite and A is right continuous. It is also shown that L 1(G, A) is right self-injective if and only if G is finite and A is right self-injective.  相似文献

Let G be a locally compact group. We show that its Fourier algebra A(G) is amenable if and only if G has an abelian subgroup of finite index, and that its Fourier–Stieltjes algebra B(G) is amenable if and only if G has a compact, abelian subgroup of finite index. We then show that A(G) is weakly amenable if the component of the identity of G is abelian, and we prove some partial results towards the converse.Research supported by NSERC under grant no. 90749-00.Research supported by NSERC under grant no. 227043-00.  相似文献

The Amenability of Measure Algebras   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In this paper we shall prove that the measure algebra M(G) ofa locally compact group G is amenable as a Banach algebra ifand only if G is discrete and amenable as a group. Our contributionis to resolve a conjecture by proving that M(G) is not amenablein the case where the group G is not discrete. Indeed, we shallprove a much stronger result: the measure algebra of a non-discrete,locally compact group has a non-zero, continuous point derivationat a certain character on the algebra.  相似文献

In this paper, some relations between L p -spaces on locally compact groups are found. Applying these results proves that for a locally compact group G, the convolution Banach algebras L p (G) ∩ L 1(G) (1 < p), and A p (G) ∩ L 1(G) (1 < p < ) are amenable if and only if G is discrete and amenable.  相似文献

The purpose of this note is to describe some algebraic conditions on a Banach algebra which force it to be finite dimensional. One of the main results in Theorem 2 which states that for a locally compact groupG, G is compact if there exists a measure μ in Soc(L 1(G)) such that μ(G) ≠ 0. We also prove thatG is finite if Soc(M(G)) is closed and every nonzero left ideal inM(G) contains a minimal left ideal.  相似文献

We study the character amenability of semigroup algebras. We work on general semigroups and certain semigroups such as inverse semigroups with a finite number of idempotents, inverse semigroups with uniformly locally finite idempotent set, Brandt and Rees semigroup and study the character amenability of the semigroup algebra l1(S) in relation to the structures of the semigroup S. In particular, we show that for any semigroup S, if ?1(S) is character amenable, then S is amenable and regular. We also show that the left character amenability of the semigroup algebra ?1(S) on a Brandt semigroup S over a group G with index set J is equivalent to the amenability of G and J being finite. Finally, we show that for a Rees semigroup S with a zero over the group G, the left character amenability of ?1(S) is equivalent to its amenability, this is in turn equivalent to G being amenable.  相似文献

Let G be a locally compact group, and ZL1(G) be the centre of its group algebra. We show that when G is compact ZL1(G) is not amenable when G is either non-abelian and connected, or is a product of infinitely many finite non-abelian groups. We also, study, for some non-compact groups G, some conditions which imply amenability and hyper-Tauberian property, for ZL1(G).  相似文献

Let G be a compact group whose local weight b(G) has uncountable cofinality. Let H be an amenable locally compact group and A(G × H) be the Fourier algebra of G × H. We prove that the group von Neumann algebra VN(G × H) = A(G × H)* has the weak uniform A(G × H)** factorization property of level b(G). As a corollary we show that A(G × H) is strongly Arens irregular, and the topological centre of UC 2(G × H)* is equal to the Fourier–Stieltjes algebra B(G × H).  相似文献

For a locally compact group G, L^1 (G) is its group algebra and L^∞(G) is the dual of L^1 (G).Lau has studied the bounded linear operators T:L^∞(G)→L^∞(G) which commute with convolutions and translations. For a subspace H of L^∞(G), we know that M(L^∞(G),H), the Banach algebra of all bounded linear operators on L^∞(G) into H which commute with convolutions, has been studied by Pyre and Lau. In this paper, we generalize these problems to L(K)^*, the dual of a hypergroup algebra L(K) in a very general setting, i.e. we do not assume that K admits a Haar measure. It should be noted that these algebras include not only the group algebra L^1(G) but also most of the semigroup algebras.Compact hypergroups have a Haar measure, however, in general it is not known that every hypergroup has a Haar measure. The lack of the Haar measure and involution presents many difficulties; however,we succeed in getting some interesting results.  相似文献

In the present paper, it is shown that, for a locally compact commutative hypergroup K with a Borel measurable weight function w, the Banach algebra L^1 (K, w) is semisimple if and only if L^1 (K) is semisimple. Indeed, we have improved compact groups to the general setting of locally a well-krown result of Bhatt and Dedania from locally compact hypergroups.  相似文献

Call a locally compact group G, C1-unique, if L1(G) has exactly one (separating) C1-norm. It is easy to see that a 1-regular group G is C1-unique and that a C1-unique group is amenable. For connected groups G it is proved that G is C1-unique, if the interior R(G)0 of a certain part R(G) of Prim(G), called the regular part of Prim(G), is dense in Prim(G), and that C1-uniqueness of G implies the density of R(G) in Prim(G). From this it is derived that a connected group of type I is C1-unique if and only if R(G)0 is dense in Prim(G). For exponential G, a quite explicit version of this result in terms of the Lie algebra of G is given. As an easy consequence, examples of amenable groups, which are not C1-unique, and C1-unique groups, which are not 1-regular are obtained. Furthermore it is shown that a connected locally compact group G is amenable if and only if L1(G) has exactly one C1-norm, which is invariant under the isometric 1-automorphisms of L1(G).  相似文献

In this paper, we characterize pseudo-contractibility of 1(S), where S is a uniformly locally finite inverse semigroup. As a consequence, we show that for a Brandt semigroup S=M0(G,I),{S={\mathcal{M}}^{0}(G,I),} the semigroup algebra 1(S) is pseudo-contractible if and only if G and I are finite. Moreover, we study the notions of pseudo-amenability and pseudo-contractibility of a semigroup algebra 1(S) in terms of the amenability of S.  相似文献

Let G be a locally compact group with a weight function ω. Recently, we have shown that the Banach space L0 (G,1/ω) can be identified with the strong dual of L1(G, ω)equipped with some locally convex topologies τ. Here we use this duality to introduce an Arens multiplication on (L1(G, ω), τ)**, and prove that the topological center of (L1(G, ω), τ)** is (L1(G, ω); this enables us to conclude that (L1(G, ω), τ) is Arens regular if and only if G is discrete. We also give a characterization for Arens regularity of L0 (G, 1/ω)1. Received: 8 March 2005  相似文献

For a locally compact group G, the measure convolution algebra M(G) carries a natural coproduct. In previous work, we showed that the canonical predual C 0(G) of M(G) is the unique predual which makes both the product and the coproduct on M(G) weak*-continuous. Given a discrete semigroup S, the convolution algebra 1(S) also carries a coproduct. In this paper we examine preduals for 1(S) making both the product and the coproduct weak*-continuous. Under certain conditions on S, we show that 1(S) has a unique such predual. Such S include the free semigroup on finitely many generators. In general, however, this need not be the case even for quite simple semigroups and we construct uncountably many such preduals on 1(S) when S is either ℤ+×ℤ or (ℕ,⋅).  相似文献

Compact and weakly compact elements of the group algebra L 1 (G) of a locally compact group G, have been considered by a number of authors. In these investigations it has been shown that, if G is non-compact, then the only weakly compact element of L 1 (G ) is zero. Conversely, if G is compact, then every element of L 1 (G) is compact. For 1<p<∞, let PM p (G)and PF p (G) denote the closure of L 1 (G), considered as an algebra of convolution operators on L p (G), with respect to the weak operator topology and the norm topology, respectively, in B(L p (G), b), the bounded linear operators on L 1 (G). We study the question of characterizing compact and weakly compact elements of the algebras PM p (G)and PF p (G).  相似文献

In this paper, we present a general version of the algebra AM(G) which was introduced by B. Forrest. Indeed, for a faithful commutative Banach algebra A, we embed it in ?(A), the multiplier algebra of A, and obtain Banach algebra AM. Then, we study the spaceability of AM? A and AM (G) ? ?A(G). These results give some characterizations of compactness and discreteness of locally compact groups. Also, we show that AM(G) is an ideal in its second dual if and only if G is discrete. Finally, we study the BSE-property of AM(G).

Let A be a complex, commutative Banach algebra and let MA be the structure space of A. Assume that there exists a continuous homomorphism h : L1(G) → A with dense range, where L1(G) is the group algebra of a locally compact abelian group G. The main results of this paper can be summarized as follows: (a) If the dual space A* has the Radon-Nikodym property, then MA is scattered (i.e., it has no nonempty perfect subset) and . (b) If the algebra A has an identity, then the space A* has the Radon-Nikodym property if and only if . Furthermore, any of these conditions implies that MA is scattered. Several applications are given. Received: 29 September 2005  相似文献

Let G be a locally compact group, ω be a weight function on G and 1 < p < ∞. Here, we give a sufficient condition for that the weighted L p -space L p (G, ω) is a Banach algebra. Also, we get some necessary conditions on G and the weight function ω for L p (G, ω) to be a Banach algebra. As a consequence, we show that if G is abelian and L p (G, ω) is a Banach algebra, then G is σ-compact.  相似文献

We study certain commutative regular semisimple Banach algebras which we call hyper-Tauberian algebras. We first show that they form a subclass of weakly amenable Tauberian algebras. Then we investigate the basic and hereditary properties of them. Moreover, we show that if A is a hyper-Tauberian algebra, then the linear space of bounded derivations from A into any Banach A-bimodule is reflexive. We apply these results to the Figà-Talamanca-Herz algebra Ap(G) of a locally compact group G for p∈(1,∞). We show that Ap(G) is hyper-Tauberian if the principal component of G is abelian. Finally, by considering the quantization of these results, we show that for any locally compact group G, Ap(G), equipped with an appropriate operator space structure, is a quantized hyper-Tauberian algebra. This, in particular, implies that Ap(G) is operator weakly amenable.  相似文献

We make use of the operator space structure of the Fourier algebra A(G) of an amenable locally compact group to prove that if H is any closed subgroup of G, then the ideal I(H) consisting of all functions in A(G) vanishing on H has a bounded approximate identity. This result allows us to completely characterize the ideals of A(G) with bounded approximate identities. We also show that for several classes of locally compact groups, including all nilpotent groups, I(H) has an approximate identity with norm bounded by 2, the best possible norm bound.  相似文献
