The best formulations for some combinatorial optimization problems are integer linear programming models with an exponential number of rows and/or columns, which are solved incrementally by generating missing rows and columns only when needed. As an alternative to row generation, some exponential formulations can be rewritten in a compact extended form, which have only a polynomial number of constraints and a polynomial, although larger, number of variables. As an alternative to column generation, there are compact extended formulations for the dual problems, which lead to compact equivalent primal formulations, again with only a polynomial number of constraints and variables. In this this paper we introduce a tool to derive compact extended formulations and survey many combinatorial optimization problems for which it can be applied. The tool is based on the possibility of formulating the separation procedure by an LP model. It can be seen as one further method to generate compact extended formulations besides other tools of geometric and combinatorial nature present in the literature.  相似文献

This paper briefly reviews the literature on necessary optimality conditions for optimal control problems with state-variable inequality constraints. Then, it attempts to unify the treatment of linear optimal control problems with state-variable inequality constraints in the framework of continuous linear programming. The duality theory in this framework makes it possible to relate the adjoint variables arising in different formulations of a problem; these relationships are illustrated by the use of a simple example. This framework also allows more general problems and admits a simplex-like algorithm to solve these problems. This research was partially supported by Grant No. A4619 from the National Research Council of Canada to the first author. Sharir and Welzl introduced an abstract framework for optimization problems, called LP-type problems or also generalized linear programming problems, which proved useful in algorithm design. We define a new, and as we believe, simpler and more natural framework: violator spaces, which constitute a proper generalization of LP-type problems. We show that Clarkson's randomized algorithms for low-dimensional linear programming work in the context of violator spaces. For example, in this way we obtain the fastest known algorithm for the P-matrix generalized linear complementarity problem with a constant number of blocks. We also give two new characterizations of LP-type problems: they are equivalent to acyclic violator spaces, as well as to concrete LP-type problems (informally, the constraints in a concrete LP-type problem are subsets of a linearly ordered ground set, and the value of a set of constraints is the minimum of its intersection).  相似文献

We consider fuzzy stochastic programming problems with a crisp objective function and linear constraints whose coefficients are fuzzy random variables, in particular of type L-R. To solve this type of problems, we formulate deterministic counterparts of chance-constrained programming with fuzzy stochastic coefficients, by combining constraints on probability of satisfying constraints, as well as their possibility and necessity. We discuss the possible indices for comparing fuzzy quantities by putting together interval orders and statistical preference. We study the convexity of the set of feasible solutions under various assumptions. We also consider the case where fuzzy intervals are viewed as consonant random intervals. The particular cases of type L-R fuzzy Gaussian and discrete random variables are detailed.  相似文献

Large practical linear and integer programming problems are not always presented in a form which is the most compact representation of the problem. Such problems are likely to posses generalized upper bound(GUB) and related structures which may be exploited by algorithms designed to solve them efficiently. The steps of an algorithm which by repeated application reduces the rows, columns, and bounds in a problem matrix and leads to the freeing of some variables are first presented. The ‘unbounded solution’ and ‘no feasible solution’ conditions may also be detected by this. Computational results of applying this algorithm are presented and discussed. An algorithm to detect structure is then described. This algorithm identifies sets of variables and the corresponding constraint relationships so that the total number of GUB-type constraints is maximized. Comparisons of computational results of applying different heuristics in this algorithm are presented and discussed.  相似文献

This paper describes a proposed special algorithm for a certain class of partionable linear programming problems. The matrix defining such a linear programming problem consists of a number of non-zero diagonal blocks, plus some entirely filled rows and dito columns.  相似文献

We present in this paper a general decomposition framework to solve exactly adjustable robust linear optimization problems subject to polytope uncertainty. Our approach is based on replacing the polytope by the set of its extreme points and generating the extreme points on the fly within row generation or column-and-row generation algorithms. The novelty of our approach lies in formulating the separation problem as a feasibility problem instead of a max–min problem as done in recent works. Applying the Farkas lemma, we can reformulate the separation problem as a bilinear program, which is then linearized to obtained a mixed-integer linear programming formulation. We compare the two algorithms on a robust telecommunications network design under demand uncertainty and budgeted uncertainty polytope. Our results show that the relative performance of the algorithms depend on whether the budget is integer or fractional.  相似文献

We consider the three-stage two-dimensional bin packing problem (2BP) which occurs in real-world applications such as glass, paper, or steel cutting. We present new integer linear programming formulations: models for a restricted version and the original version of the problem are developed. Both only involve polynomial numbers of variables and constraints and effectively avoid symmetries. Those models are solved using CPLEX. Furthermore, a branch-and-price (B&P) algorithm is presented for a set covering formulation of the unrestricted problem, which corresponds to a Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition of the polynomially-sized model. We consider column generation stabilization in the B&P algorithm using dual-optimal inequalities. Fast column generation is performed by applying a hierarchy of four methods: (a) a fast greedy heuristic, (b) an evolutionary algorithm, (c) solving a restricted form of the pricing problem using CPLEX, and finally (d) solving the complete pricing problem using CPLEX. Computational experiments on standard benchmark instances document the benefits of the new approaches: The restricted version of the integer linear programming model can be used to quickly obtain near-optimal solutions. The unrestricted version is computationally more expensive. Column generation provides a strong lower bound for 3-stage 2BP. The combination of all four pricing algorithms and column generation stabilization in the proposed B&P framework yields the best results in terms of the average objective value, the average run-time, and the number of instances solved to proven optimality.  相似文献

In their paper, Avella et al. (2006) investigate a time-constrained routing problem. The core of the proposed solution approach is a large-scale linear program that grows both row- and column-wise when new variables are introduced. Thus, a column-and-row generation algorithm is proposed to solve this linear program optimally, and an optimality condition is presented to terminate the column-and-row generation algorithm. We demonstrate by using Lagrangian duality that this optimality condition is incorrect and may lead to a suboptimal solution at termination.  相似文献

We pursue the study of concavity cuts for the disjoint bilinear programming problem. This optimization problem has two equivalent symmetric linear maxmin reformulations, leading to two sets of concavity cuts. We first examine the depth of these cuts by considering the assumptions on the boundedness of the feasible regions of both maxmin and bilinear formulations. We next propose a branch and bound algorithm which make use of concavity cuts. We also present a procedure that eliminates degenerate solutions. Extensive computational experiences are reported. Sparse problems with up to 500 variables in each disjoint sets and 100 constraints, and dense problems with up to 60 variables again in each sets and 60 constraints are solved in reasonable computing times. We propose a column generation based exact decomposition algorithm for the problem of scheduling n jobs with an unrestrictively large common due date on m identical parallel machines to minimize total weighted earliness and tardiness. We first formulate the problem as an integer program, then reformulate it, using Dantzig–Wolfe decomposition, as a set partitioning problem with side constraints. Based on this set partitioning formulation, a branch and bound exact solution algorithm is developed for the problem. In the branch and bound tree, each node is the linear relaxation problem of a set partitioning problem with side constraints. This linear relaxation problem is solved by column generation approach where columns represent partial schedules on single machines and are generated by solving two single machine subproblems. Our computational results show that this decomposition algorithm is capable of solving problems with up to 60 jobs in reasonable cpu time.  相似文献

We study 0-1 reformulations of the multicommodity capacitated network design problem, which is usually modeled with general integer variables to represent design decisions on the number of facilities to install on each arc of the network. The reformulations are based on the multiple choice model, a generic approach to represent piecewise linear costs using 0-1 variables. This model is improved by the addition of extended linking inequalities, derived from variable disaggregation techniques. We show that these extended linking inequalities for the 0-1 model are equivalent to the residual capacity inequalities, a class of valid inequalities derived for the model with general integer variables. In this paper, we compare two cutting-plane algorithms to compute the same lower bound on the optimal value of the problem: one based on the generation of residual capacity inequalities within the model with general integer variables, and the other based on the addition of extended linking inequalities to the 0-1 reformulation. To further improve the computational results of the latter approach, we develop a column-and-row generation approach; the resulting algorithm is shown to be competitive with the approach relying on residual capacity inequalities.  相似文献

In problems of portfolio selection the reward-risk ratio criterion is optimized to search for a risky portfolio offering the maximum increase of the mean return, compared to the risk-free investment opportunities. In the classical model, following Markowitz, the risk is measured by the variance thus representing the Sharpe ratio optimization and leading to the quadratic optimization problems. Several polyhedral risk measures, being linear programming (LP) computable in the case of discrete random variables represented by their realizations under specified scenarios, have been introduced and applied in portfolio optimization. The reward-risk ratio optimization with polyhedral risk measures can be transformed into LP formulations. The LP models typically contain the number of constraints proportional to the number of scenarios while the number of variables (matrix columns) proportional to the total of the number of scenarios and the number of instruments. Real-life financial decisions are usually based on more advanced simulation models employed for scenario generation where one may get several thousands scenarios. This may lead to the LP models with huge number of variables and constraints thus decreasing their computational efficiency and making them hardly solvable by general LP tools. We show that the computational efficiency can be then dramatically improved by alternative models based on the inverse ratio minimization and taking advantages of the LP duality. In the introduced models the number of structural constraints (matrix rows) is proportional to the number of instruments thus not affecting seriously the simplex method efficiency by the number of scenarios and therefore guaranteeing easy solvability.  相似文献

In this paper, a global optimization algorithm is proposed for solving sum of generalized polynomial ratios problem (P) which arises in various practical problems. Due to its intrinsic difficulty, less work has been devoted to globally solve the problem (P). For such problems, we present a branch and bound algorithm. In this method, by utilizing exponent transformation and new three-level linear relaxation method, a sequence of linear relaxation programming of the initial nonconvex programming problem (P) are derived which are embedded in a branch and bound algorithm. The proposed method need not introduce new variables and constraints and it is convergent to the global minimum of prime problem by means of the subsequent solutions of a series of linear programming problems. Several numerical examples in the literatures are tested to demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can systematically solve these examples to find the approximate ?-global optimum.  相似文献

Suppose that a large-scale block-diagonal linear programming problem has been solved by the Dantzig—Wolfe decomposition algorithm and that an optimal solution has been attained. Suppose further that it is desired to perform a post-optimality analysis or a complete parametric analysis on the cost-coefficients or the RHS of the linking constraints. Efficient techniques for performing these analyses for the ordinary simplex case have not been easily applied to this case as one operation involves doing a minimizing ratio between all columns of two rows of the tableau. As the columns are not readily known in Dantzig—Wolfe decomposition, other techniques must be used. To date, suggested methods involve solving small linear programs to find these minimizing ratios. In this paper a method is presented which requires solving no linear programs (except possibly in the case of degeneracy of a subproblem) using and utilizing only the information typically stored for Dantzig—Wolfe decomposition.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the development of an algorithm for general bilinear programming problems. Such problems find numerous applications in economics and game theory, location theory, nonlinear multi-commodity network flows, dynamic assignment and production, and various risk management problems. The proposed approach develops a new Reformulation-Linearization Technique (RLT) for this problem, and imbeds it within a provably convergent branch-and-bound algorithm. The method first reformulates the problem by constructing a set of nonnegative variable factors using the problem constraints, and suitably multiplies combinations of these factors with the original problem constraints to generate additional valid nonlinear constraints. The resulting nonlinear program is subsequently linearized by defining a new set of variables, one for each nonlinear term. This RLT process yields a linear programming problem whose optimal value provides a tight lower bound on the optimal value to the bilinear programming problem. Various implementation schemes and constraint generation procedures are investigated for the purpose of further tightening the resulting linearization. The lower bound thus produced theoretically dominates, and practically is far tighter, than that obtained by using convex envelopes over hyper-rectangles. In fact, for some special cases, this process is shown to yield an exact linear programming representation. For the associated branch-and-bound algorithm, various admissible branching schemes are discussed, including one in which branching is performed by partitioning the intervals for only one set of variables x or y, whichever are fewer in number. Computational experience is provided to demonstrate the viability of the algorithm. For a large number of test problems from the literature, the initial bounding linear program itself solves the underlying bilinear programming problem. This paper was presented at the II. This paper is concerned with the set covering problem (SCP), and in particular with the development of a new algorithm capable of solving large-scale SCPs of the size found in real-life situations. The set covering problem has a wide variety of practical applications which, in general, yield large and sparse instances, normally with hundreds of rows and thousands of columns. In this paper, we present an algorithm capable of solving problems of this size and test problems up to 400 rows and 4000 columns are solved. The method developed in this paper consists of a tree-search procedure based on a combination of decomposition and state space relaxation which is a technique developed for obtaining lower bounds on the dynamic program associated with a combinatorial optimization problem. The large size SCPs are decomposed into many smaller SCPs which are then solved or bounded by state space relaxation (SSR). Before using the decomposition and SSR, reductions both in the number of columns and the number of rows of the problem are made by applying Lagrangian relaxation, linear programming and heuristic methods.  相似文献

We present an alternating direction dual augmented Lagrangian method for solving semidefinite programming (SDP) problems in standard form. At each iteration, our basic algorithm minimizes the augmented Lagrangian function for the dual SDP problem sequentially, first with respect to the dual variables corresponding to the linear constraints, and then with respect to the dual slack variables, while in each minimization keeping the other variables fixed, and then finally it updates the Lagrange multipliers (i.e., primal variables). Convergence is proved by using a fixed-point argument. For SDPs with inequality constraints and positivity constraints, our algorithm is extended to separately minimize the dual augmented Lagrangian function over four sets of variables. Numerical results for frequency assignment, maximum stable set and binary integer quadratic programming problems demonstrate that our algorithms are robust and very efficient due to their ability or exploit special structures, such as sparsity and constraint orthogonality in these problems.  相似文献
