In this work, the influence of surfactants on air–water flow was studied by performing experiments in a 12 metre long, 50 mm inner diameter, vertical pipe at ambient conditions. High-speed visualisation of the flow shows that the morphology of the air–water interface determines the formation of foam. The foam subsequently alters the flow morphology significantly. In annular flow, the foam suppresses the roll waves, and a foamy crest is formed on the ripple waves. In the churn flow regime, the flooding waves and the downwards motion of the liquid film are suppressed by the foam. The foam is transported in foam waves moving upwards superposed on an almost stagnant foam substrate at the pipe wall. Foam thus effectively reduces the superficial gas velocity at which the transition from annular to churn flow occurs. These experiments make more clear how surfactants can postpone liquid loading in vertical pipes, such as in gas wells.  相似文献

Measurements of particle mean and r.m.s. velocity were obtained by laser-Doppler anemometry in a descending solid-liquid turbulent flow in a vertical pipe with volumetric concentrations of suspended spherical particles of 270 μm mean diameter in the range 0.1–14%. Similar measurements were obtained in the flow downstream of an axisymmetric baffle of 50% area blockage placed in the pipe with volumetric concentrations of 310 μm particles up to 8% and of 665 μm particles up to 2%. In order to enable measurements in high particle concentrations without blockage of the laser beams the refractive index of the particles was matched to that of the carrier fluid.

The results show that the particle mean velocity profiles become more uniform and the particle r.m.s. velocity decreases with increasing concentration in both flow cases. The particle mean velocity in the pipe flow also decreases with concentration and the relative velocity, the difference between the particle velocity and the fluid velocity in single-phase flow, decreases with increasing Reynolds number. The length of the recirculation region downstream of the baffle was shorter than in single-phase flow by 11 and 24% for particle concentrations of 4 and 8%, respectively. The particle mean velocities were hardly affected by size for concentrations up fo 2%, but the r.m.s. velocities were lower with the larger particles.  相似文献

The flow structure in a developing air-water two-phase flow was investigated experimentally along a large vertical pipe (inner diameter, Dh: 0.48 m, ratio of length of flow path L to Dh: about 4.2). Two air injection methods (porous sinter injection and nozzle injection) were adopted to realize an extremely different flow structure in the developing region. The flow rate condition in the test section was as follows: superficial air velocity: 0.02–0.87 m/s (at atmospheric pressure) and superficial water velocity: 0.01–0.2 0.01–0.2 m/s, which covers the range of bubbly to slug flow in a small-scale pipe (Dh about 0.05 m).

No air slugs occupying the flow path were recognized in this experiment regardless of the air injection methods even under the condition where slug flow is realized in the small-scale pipe. In the lower half of the test section, the axial distribution of sectional differential pressure and the radial distribution of local void fraction showed peculiar distributions depending on the air injection methods. However, in the upper half of the test section, the effects of the air injection methods are small in respect of the shapes of the differential pressure distribution and the phase distribution. The comparison of sectional void fraction near the top of the test section with Kataoka's correlation indicated that the distribution parameter of the drift-flux model should be modeled including the effect of Dh and the bubble size distribution is affected by the air injection methods. The bubble size distribution is considered to be affected also by L/Dh based on comparison of results with Hills' correlation.  相似文献

Numerical prediction of locally forced turbulent boundary layer   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
An unsteady numerical simulation was performed to analyze flow structure behind a local suction/blowing in a flat-plate turbulent boundary layer. The local forcing was given to the boundary layer flow by means of a sinusoidally oscillating jet. A version of the unsteady k––fμ model [Fluid Dyn. Res. 26 (6) (2000) 421] was employed. The Reynolds number based on the momentum thickness was about Reθ=1700. The forcing frequency was varied in the range 0.011f+0.044 with a fixed forcing amplitude Ao=0.4. The predicted results were compared and validated with the experimental data. It was shown that the unsteady locally forced boundary layer flow is predicted well by the k––fμ model. The time-dependent numerical flow visualizations were demonstrated during one period of the local forcing. The effect of the pitch angle of local forcing on the reduction of skin friction was examined.  相似文献

This paper deals with the waves that are reflected from slabs of porous compressible foam attached to a rigid wall when impacted by a weak shock wave. The interest is in establishing possible attenuation of the pressure field after a shock or blast wave has struck the surface. Foam densities from 14 to 38 kg/m3 were tested over a range of shock wave Mach numbers less than 1.4. It is shown that the initial reflected shock wave strength is accurately predicted by the pseudo-gas model of Gelfand et al. (1983), with a pressure ratio of approximately 80% of the value for reflection off a rigid wall. Evidence is presented of gas entering the foam during the early stages of the process. A second wave emerges from the foam at a later stage and is separated from the first by a region of constant velocity and pressure. This second wave is not a shock wave but a compression front of significant thickness, which emerges from the foam earlier than predicted by the pseudo-gas model. Analysis of the origin of this wave points to much more complex flows within the foam than previously assumed, particularly in an apparent decrease in average wave front speed as the foam is compressed. It is shown that the pressure ratio across both these waves taken together is slightly higher than that for reflection off a rigid wall. In some cases this compression wave train is followed by a weak expansion wave. This article was processed using Springer-Verlag TEX Shock Waves macro package 1990.  相似文献

In many lubrication processes, lubricating oils containing polymer additives are subject to high shear rate through very small clearance channels. While the influence of shear rate on the performance of these lubricants has been well examined, very little is known about the effects of channel size. In this study a specially designed microchannel viscometer has been used to experimentally characterize the influence of channel height on the effective viscosity of oil lubricants with two different polymer additives (a radial hydrogenated styrene–isoprene copolymer and an A–B–A block ethylene–propylene copolymer) commenly used as viscosity index (VI) modifiers. The mass concentration of the polymer solutions ranged from 0.5% to 1.5% in this study. The viscosity was measured over a range of shear rates in steel slit microchannels with heights of 4.5, 7 and 11.5 μm, respectively. For all solutions a significant viscosity dependence on channel size was observed. In the higher shear rate range the smaller channels exhibited a lower viscosity while in the lower shear rate range all solutions exhibited a significant increase in viscosity. Generally, this observed increase in viscosity is more dramatic in the smaller channels. Possible causes of these behaviors were discussed in this paper.  相似文献

There are still many open questions and problems in both fundamental research and practical applications of foams. Despite the fact that foams have been extensively studied, many aspects of foam physics and chemistry still remain unclear. Experiments on foams performed under microgravity allow studying wet foams, such as those obtained early during the foaming process. On Earth, wet foams evolve too quickly due to gravity drainage and only dry foams can be studied. This paper reviews the foam and foam film studies that we have performed in gravity-free conditions. It highlights the importance of surface rheology as well as of confinement effects in foams and foam films behaviour.  相似文献

Effect of particle size on a two-phase turbulent jet   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
The effect of particle size on two-phase turbulent jet flow structure is studied in the present experimental investigation. Polystyrene solid particles of 210, 460, and 780 μm were used. The particles' mass loading ratios ranged from 0 to 3.6. The flow Reynolds number was 2 ‘ 104, which was based on the pipe nozzle diameter and the fluid-phase centerline velocity at the nozzle exit. A two-color laser-Doppler anemometer (LDA), combined with the amplitude discrimination method and the velocity filter method, was employed for measurement. The measurement range of the jet flow was from the initial pipe exit to 90D downstream. Results are presented for the mean velocities of particle and fluid phases, the flow's turbulent intensities and the flow's Reynolds stresses. The energy spectra and the correlation functions of the two-phase jet flow were also obtained by using another one-component He-Ne LDA system.  相似文献

Two-phase air–water flows in a microscale fractal-like flow network were experimentally studied and results were compared to predictions from existing macroscale void fraction correlations and flow regime maps. Void fraction was assessed using (1) two-dimensional analysis of high-speed images (direct method) and (2) experimentally determined using gas velocities (indirect method). Fixed downstream-to-upstream length and width ratios of 1.4 and 0.71, respectively, characterize the five-level flow network. Channels were fabricated in a 38 mm diameter silicon disk, 250 μm deep disk with a terminal channel width of 100 μm. A Pyrex top allowed for flow visualization. Superficial air and water velocities through the various branch levels were varied from 0.007 m/s to 1.8 m/s and from 0.05 m/s to 0.42 m/s, respectively. Two-phase flow regime maps were generated for each level of the flow network and are well predicted by the Taitel and Dukler model. Void fraction assessed using the indirect method shows very good agreement with the homogeneous void fraction model for all branch levels for the given range of flow conditions. Void fraction determined directly varies considerably from that assessed indirectly, showing better agreement with the void fraction correlation of Zivi.  相似文献

Experiments were performed to study pressure drops in copper foams embedded in a rectangular copper channel. De-ionized water was used as the working fluid with mass fluxes of 30–200 kg/m2 s, and inlet temperature of 40–80°C. The copper foam has the porosity of 0.88 and the pore densities of 30, 60 and 90 ppi (pores per inch). Both single-phase liquid flow and boiling two-phase flow are studied. Effects of mass fluxes, vapor mass qualities, and average pore diameters of metallic foams are investigated. It is found that friction factors for the single-phase liquid flow are mainly dependent on the Reynolds number and the average pore diameter of metallic foams. The friction factors are decreased with increases in the Reynolds numbers, and will approach 0.22 at high Reynolds numbers. For the boiling two-phase flow, two-phase pressure drops are increased with increases in the outlet vapor mass qualities, mass fluxes, and ppi values. The two-phase multiplier is increased with increases in the outlet vapor mass qualities and mass fluxes, and it is decreased with increases in the Martinelli parameter and will attain a constant value depending on the mass fluxes. The larger the mass fluxes, the larger the constant value is. An experimental correlation considering the effects of vapor mass qualities, mass fluxes, and average pore diameters of metallic foams is recommended, showing good accuracy to predict the two-phase pressure drops in metallic foams.  相似文献

Mechanical, thermo-mechanical, and fluid dynamic simulations of open-cell foams require an accurate geometry model. Usually, models are derived from computer- tomography (CT) data which do not allow analysing systematically variation and optimisation of the geometry. On the other hand, entirely computer generated models are mostly assembled of primitive objects like cylinders. This disregards strut thickness variations and node rounding which are observed in real open-cell foams. This paper presents an approach to generate models of ceramic open-cell foams using simple objects with variable thickness generated by implicit functions. This approach can also account for cavities within struts and nodes, which are observed in many real foam structures. The specific rounding at the foam nodes can be modelled by applying the transformation of Blinn. The quality of the generated foam models is verified using CT data of real foams.  相似文献

Accurate measurements of the interfacial wave structure of upward annular two-phase flow in a vertical pipe were performed using a laser focus displacement meter (LFD). The purpose of this study was to clarify the effectiveness of the LFD for obtaining detailed information on the interfacial displacement of a liquid film in annular two-phase flow and to investigate the effect of axial distance from the air–water inlet on the phenomena. Adiabatic upward annular air–water flow experiments were conducted using a 3 m long, 11 mm ID pipe. Measurements of interfacial waves were conducted at 21 axial locations, spaced 110 mm apart in the pipe. The axial distances from the inlet (z) normalized by the pipe diameter (D) varied over z/D = 50–250. Data were collected for predetermined gas and liquid flow conditions and for Reynolds numbers ranging from ReG = 31,800 to 98,300 for the gas phase and ReL = 1050 to 9430 for the liquid phase. Using the LFD, we obtained such local properties as the minimum thickness, maximum thickness, and passing frequency of the waves. The maximum film thickness and passing frequency of disturbance waves decreased gradually, with some oscillations, as flow developed. The flow development, i.e., decreasing film thickness and passing frequency, persisted until the end of the pipe, which means that the flow might never reach the fully developed state. The minimum film thickness decreased with flow development and with increasing gas flow rate. These results are discussed, taking into account the buffer layer calculated from Karman’s three-layer model. A correlation is proposed between the minimum film thickness obtained in relation to the interfacial shear stress and the Reynolds number of the liquid.  相似文献

Turbulence modulation due to its interaction with dispersed solid particles in a downward fully developed channel flow was studied. The Eulerian framework was used for the gas-phase, whereas the Lagrangian approach was used for the particle-phase. The steady-state equations of conservation of mass and momentum were used for the gas-phase, and the effect of turbulence on the flow-field was included via the standard kε model. The particle equation of motion included the drag, the Saffman lift and the gravity forces. Turbulence dispersion effect on the particles was simulated as a continuous Gaussian random field. The effects of particles on the flow were modeled by appropriate source terms in the momentum, k and ε equations. Particle–particle collisions and particle–wall collisions were accounted for in these simulations. Gas-phase velocities and turbulence kinetic energy in the presence of 2–100% mass loadings of two particle classes (50 μm glass and 70 μm copper) were evaluated, and the results were compared with the available experimental data and earlier numerical results. The simulation results showed that when the inter-particle collisions were important and was included in the computational model, the fluid turbulence was attenuated. The level of turbulence attenuation increased with particle mass loading, particle Stokes number, and the distance from the wall. When the inter-particle collisions were negligible and/or was neglected in the model, the fluid turbulence was augmented for the range of particle sizes considered.  相似文献

We consider the stability of a multi-layer plane Poiseuille flow of two Bingham fluids. It is shown that this two-fluid flow is frequently more stable than the equivalent flow of either fluid alone. This phenomenon of super-stability results only when the yield stress of the fluid next to the channel wall is larger than that of the fluid in the centre of the channel, which need not have a yield stress. Our result is in direct contrast to the stability of analogous flows of purely viscous generalised Newtonian fluids, for which short wavelength interfacial instabilities can be found at relatively low Reynolds numbers. The results imply the existence of parameter regimes where visco-plastic lubrication is possible, permitting transport of an inelastic generalised Newtonian fluid in the centre of a channel, lubricated at the walls by a visco-plastic fluid, travelling in a stable laminar flow at higher flow rates than would be possible for the single fluid alone.  相似文献

The constrained deformation of an aluminium alloy foam sandwiched between steel substrates has been investigated. The sandwich plates are subjected to through-thickness shear and normal loading, and it is found that the face sheets constrain the foam against plastic deformation and result in a size effect: the yield strength increases with diminishing thickness of foam layer. The strain distribution across the foam core has been measured by a visual strain mapping technique, and a boundary layer of reduced straining was observed adjacent to the face sheets. The deformation response of the aluminium foam layer was modelled by the elastic-plastic finite element analysis of regular and irregular two dimensional honeycombs, bonded to rigid face sheets; in the simulations, the rotation of the boundary nodes of the cell-wall beam elements was set to zero to simulate full constraint from the rigid face sheets. It is found that the regular honeycomb under-estimates the size effect whereas the irregular honeycomb provides a faithful representation of both the observed size effect and the observed strain profile through the foam layer. Additionally, a compressible version of the Fleck-Hutchinson strain gradient theory was used to predict the size effect; by identifying the cell edge length as the relevant microstructural length scale the strain gradient model is able to reproduce the observed strain profiles across the layer and the thickness dependence of strength.  相似文献

This article presents results of the investigation of the fluid dynamic behavior in CVD processed nickel metal foams. An experimental facility was developed to measure the single-phase permeability in nickel metal foams in Darcian flow regime. Data on permeability values of seven different nickel foam samples was obtained. The pore sizes of the foam were obtained with scanning electron microscope. By defining friction factor and Reynolds number based on the permeability length scale a correlation was obtained for the foam permeability in Darcian flow regime. The result from this study was compared with the correlations reported by other researchers, and was found to be in good agreement.  相似文献

The interaction of rarefaction waves of different shapes with wet water foams is studied experimentally. It is found that the observed values of the pressure are greater, while the surface velocity is lower than the corresponding values predicted by the pseudogas model. The foam breakdown starts as the pressure decreases by 0.3 atm relative to the initial pressure. During downstream propagation of the rarefaction-wave leading edge the propagation velocity decreases.Using of water-based foams as effective screens for damping blast waves in different technological processes has caused considerable interest in studying wave propagation in such systems. The pressure wave dynamics in a foam have been investigated in much detail, both experimentally and theoretically [1–3]. However, the interaction of rarefaction waves with foam has practically never been studied, although it was mentioned in [4] that the unloading phase following the compression wave phase is one of the factors defining the damaging action of blast waves. Besides blast-wave damping, rarefaction wave propagation takes place if such waves are used to breakup foam in oil-producing wells [5].Below, the interaction of rarefaction waves of different shapes with wet water foams is studied. The vertical shock tube described in detail in [3] was used in these experiments.Brest. Open-cell metal foams are often used in heat exchangers and absorption equipment because they exhibit large specific surface area and present tortuous coolant flow paths. However, published research works on the characteristics of fluid flow in metal foams are relatively scarce, especially for the flow oscillation condition. The present experimental investigation attempts to uncover the behavior of steady and oscillating flows through metal foams with a tetrakaidecahedron structure. In the experiments, steady flow was supplied by an auto-balance compressor and flow oscillation was provided by an oscillating flow generator. The pressure drop and velocity were measured by the differential pressure transducer and hot-wire sensor, respectively. The friction factor of steady flow in metal foam channel was analyzed through the permeability and inertia coefficient of the porous medium. The results show that flow resistance in the metal foams increases with increasing form coefficient and decreasing permeability. The empirical equation obtained by the present study indicates that the maximum friction factor of oscillating flow through the tested aluminum foams with specific structure is governed by the hydraulic ligament diameter-based kinetic Reynolds number and the dimensionless flow amplitude.  相似文献

The liquid-phase axial dispersion coefficient and volume-averaged fractional phase hold-ups have been measured in two-phase horizontal pipe flow. Radioactive 99mTc—technetium-99 metastable—(as an aqueous solution of sodium pertechnate) was used as a tracer. The pulse technique with two-point measurement was employed. Superficial gas (air) and liquid (water) velocities were varied in the range 20–2300 and 30–800mm/s, respectively. The flow regimes covered were bubbly, elongated bubbly, stratified, wavy and slug. Experiments were also performed using single-phase pipe flow. The liquid-phase dispersion coefficient has been shown to depend upon the flow regime and the superficial gas and liquid velocities.  相似文献
