In this paper we obtain chromatic polynomials P(G; λ) of 2-connected graphs of order n that are maximum for positive integer-valued arguments λ ≧ 3. The extremal graphs are cycles Cn and these graphs are unique for every λ ≧ 3 and n ≠ 5. We also determine max{P(G; λ): G is 2-connected of order n and GCn} and all extremal graphs relative to this property, with some consequences on the maximum number of 3-colorings in the class of 2-connected graphs of order n having X(G) = 2 and X(G) = 3, respectively. For every n ≧ 5 and λ ≧ 4, the first three maximum chromatic polynomials of 2-connected graphs are determined.  相似文献

Cunningham and Edmonds [4[ have proved that a 2-connected graphG has a unique minimal decomposition into graphs, each of which is either 3-connected, a bond or a polygon. They define the notion of a good split, and first prove thatG has a unique minimal decomposition into graphs, none of which has a good split, and second prove that the graphs that do not have a good split are precisely 3-connected graphs, bonds and polygons. This paper provides an analogue of the first result above for 3-connected graphs, and an analogue of the second for minimally 3-connected graphs. Following the basic strategy of Cunningham and Edmonds, an appropriate notion of good split is defined. The first main result is that ifG is a 3-connected graph, thenG has a unique minimal decomposition into graphs, none of which has a good split. The second main result is that the minimally 3-connected graphs that do not have a good split are precisely cyclically 4-connected graphs, twirls (K 3,n for somen3) and wheels. From this it is shown that ifG is a minimally 3-connected graph, thenG has a unique minimal decomposition into graphs, each of which is either cyclically 4-connected, a twirl or a wheel.Research partially supported by Office of Naval Research Grant N00014-86-K-0689 at Purdue University.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce three operations on planar graphs that we call face splitting, double face splitting, and subdivision of hexagons. We show that the duals of the planar 4-connected graphs can be generated from the graph of the cube by these three operations. That is, given any graphG that is the dual of a planar 4-connected graph, there is a sequence of duals of planar 4-connected graphsG 0,G 1, …,G n such thatG 0 is the graph of the cube,G n=G, and each graph is obtained from its predecessor by one of our three operations. In this paper it is shown that any 4-connected graph that does not contain a minor isomorphic to the cube is a minor of the line graph of Vn for some n6 or a minor of one of five graphs. Moreover, there exists a unique 5-connected graph on at least 8 vertices with no cube minor and a unique 4-connected graph with a vertex of degree at least 8 with no cube minor. Further, it is shown that any graph with no cube minor is obtained from 4-connected such graphs by 0-, 1-, and 2-summing, and 3-summing over a specified triangles.  相似文献

The number of labeled cyclically 4-connected cubic graphs on n vertices is shown to satisfy a simple recurrence relation. The proof involves the unique decomposition of 3-connected cubic graphs into cyclically 4-connected components.  相似文献

Having observed Tutte's classification of 3-connected graphs as those attainable from wheels by line addition and point splitting and Hedetniemi's classification of 2-connected graphs as those obtainable from K2 by line addition, subdivision and point addition, one hopes to find operations which classify n-connected graphs as those obtainable from, for example, Kn+1. In this paper I give several generalizations of the above operations and use Halin's theorem to obtain two variations of Tutte's theorem as well as a classification of 4-connected graphs.  相似文献

A graph is said to have property P(k,l)(k ? l) if for any X ∈ (Gk) there exists a cycle such that |XV(C)| = l. Obviously an n-connected graph (n ? 2) satisfies P(n,n). In this paper, we study parameters k and l such that every n-connected graph satisfies P(k,l). We show that for r = 1 or 2 every n-connected graph satisfies P(n + r,n). For r = 3, there are infinitely many 3-connected graphs that do not satisfy P(6,3). However, if n ? max{3,(2r ?1)(r + 1)}, then every n-connected graph satisfies P(n + r,n).  相似文献

A conjecture of Dirac states that every simple graph with n vertices and 3n ? 5 edges must contain a subdivision of K5. We prove that a topologically minimal counterexample is 5-connected, and that no minor-minimal counterexample contains K4e. Consequently, Dirac's conjecture holds for all graphs that can be embedded in a surface with Euler characteristic at least ? 2.  相似文献

A graphG ischromatically k-connected if every vertex cutset induces a subgraph with chromatic number at leastk. This concept arose in some work, involving the third author, on Ramsey Theory. (For the reference, see the text.) Here we begin the study of chromatic connectivity for its own sake. We show thatG is chromaticallyk-connected iff every homomorphic image of it isk-connected. IfG has no triangles then it is at most chromatically 1-connected, but we prove that the Kneser graphs provide examples ofK 4-free graphs with arbitrarily large chromatic connectivity. We also verify thatK 4-free planar graphs are at most chromatically 2-connected.This work was supported by grants from NSERC of Canada.  相似文献

Some known results on claw-free graphs are generalized to the larger class of almost claw-free graphs. In this paper, we prove several properties on longest cycles in almost claw-free graphs. In particular, we show the following two results.? (1) Every 2-connected almost claw-free graph on n vertices contains a cycle of length at least min {n, 2δ+4} and the bound 2δ+ 4 is best possible, thereby fully generalizing a result of Matthews and Sumner.? (2) Every 3-connected almost claw-free graph on n vertices contains a cycle of length at least min {n, 4δ}, thereby fully generalizing a result of MingChu Li. A graph G is critically 2-connected if G is 2-connected but, for any point p of G, G — p is not 2-connected. Critically 2-connected graphs on n points that have the maximum number of lines are characterized and shown to be unique for n ? 3, n ≠ 11.  相似文献

It is proved that if a planar triangulation different from K3 and K4 contains a Hamiltonian cycle, then it contains at least four of them. Together with the result of Hakimi, Schmeichel, and Thomassen [2], this yields that, for n ? 12, the minimum number of Hamiltonian cycles in a Hamiltonian planar triangulation on n vertices is four. We also show that this theorem holds for triangulations of arbitrary surfaces and for 3-connected triangulated graphs.  相似文献

An edge e of a k-connected graph G is said to be a removable edge if G?e is still k-connected. A k-connected graph G is said to be a quasi (k+1)-connected if G has no nontrivial k-separator. The existence of removable edges of 3-connected and 4-connected graphs and some properties of quasi k-connected graphs have been investigated [D.A. Holton, B. Jackson, A. Saito, N.C. Wormale, Removable edges in 3-connected graphs, J. Graph Theory 14(4) (1990) 465-473; H. Jiang, J. Su, Minimum degree of minimally quasi (k+1)-connected graphs, J. Math. Study 35 (2002) 187-193; T. Politof, A. Satyanarayana, Minors of quasi 4-connected graphs, Discrete Math. 126 (1994) 245-256; T. Politof, A. Satyanarayana, The structure of quasi 4-connected graphs, Discrete Math. 161 (1996) 217-228; J. Su, The number of removable edges in 3-connected graphs, J. Combin. Theory Ser. In this paper, we first investigate the relation between quasi connectivity and removable edges. Based on the relation, the existence of removable edges in k-connected graphs (k?5) is investigated. It is proved that a 5-connected graph has no removable edge if and only if it is isomorphic to K6. For a k-connected graph G such that end vertices of any edge of G have at most k-3 common adjacent vertices, it is also proved that G has a removable edge. Consequently, a recursive construction method of 5-connected graphs is established, that is, any 5-connected graph can be obtained from K6 by a number of θ+-operations. We conjecture that, if k is even, a k-connected graph G without removable edge is isomorphic to either Kk+1 or the graph Hk/2+1 obtained from Kk+2 by removing k/2+1 disjoint edges, and, if k is odd, G is isomorphic to Kk+1.  相似文献

An edge e of a 3-connected graph G is said to be removable if G - e is a subdivision of a 3-connected graph. If e is not removable, then e is said to be nonremovable. In this paper, we study the distribution of removable edges in 3-connected graphs and prove that a 3-connected graph of order n ≥ 5 has at most [(4 n — 5)/3] nonremovable edges.  相似文献

In this paper all 2-connected k-chromatic graphs of order n with the maximum sum of all distances between their vertices are characterized for every k ≥ 2, thus strengthening a result of J. Plesnik. Moreover, several auxiliary results are proved on chromatic critical graphs and 2-connected graphs.  相似文献

Let Tn be a 3-connected n-vertex planar triangulation chosen uniformly at random. Then the number of vertices in the largest 4-connected component of Tn is asymptotic to n/2 with probability tending to 1 as n → ∞. It follows that almost all 3-connected triangulations with n vertices have a cycle of length at least n/2 + o(n).  相似文献

Contractible edges in triangle-free graphs   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
An edge of a graph is calledk-contractible if the contraction of the edge results in ak-connected graph. Thomassen [5] proved that everyk-connected graph of girth at least four has ak-contractible edge. In this paper, we study the distribution ofk-contractible edges in triangle-free graphs and show the following: Whenk≧2, everyk-connected graph of girth at least four and ordern≧3k, hasn+(3/2)k 2-3k or morek-contractible edges.  相似文献

An edge e of a k-connected graph G is said to be a removable edge if Ge is still k-connected, where Ge denotes the graph obtained from G by deleting e to get Ge, and for any end vertex of e with degree k − 1 in Ge, say x, delete x, and then add edges between any pair of non-adjacent vertices in N Ge (x). The existence of removable edges of k-connected graphs and some properties of 3-connected graphs and 4-connected graphs have been investigated. In the present paper, we investigate some properties of k-connected graphs and study the distribution of removable edges on a cycle in a k-connected graph (k ≥ 4).  相似文献

We construct an incidence structure using certain points and lines in finite projective spaces. The structural properties of the associated bipartite incidence graphs are analyzed. These n × n bipartite graphs provide constructions of C6‐free graphs with Ω(n4/3 edges, C10‐free graphs with Ω(n6/5) edges, and Θ(7,7,7)‐free graphs with Ω(n8/7) edges. Each of these bounds is sharp in order of magnitude. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 49: 1–10, 2005  相似文献

The circumference of a graph is the length of its longest cycles. Results of Jackson, and Jackson and Wormald, imply that the circumference of a 3-connected cubic n-vertex graph is Ω(n0.694), and the circumference of a 3-connected claw-free graph is Ω(n0.121). We generalize and improve the first result by showing that every 3-edge-connected graph with m edges has an Eulerian subgraph with Ω(m0.753) edges. We use this result together with the Ryjá?ek closure operation to improve the lower bound on the circumference of a 3-connected claw-free graph to Ω(n0.753). Our proofs imply polynomial time algorithms for finding large Eulerian subgraphs of 3-edge-connected graphs and long cycles in 3-connected claw-free graphs.  相似文献
