Some known results on claw-free graphs are generalized to the larger class of almost claw-free graphs. In this paper, we prove the following two results and conjecture that every 5-connected almost claw-free graph is hamiltonian. (1). Every 2-connected almost claw-free graph GJ on n≤ 4 δ vertices is hamiltonian, where J is the set of all graphs defined as follows: any graph G in J can be decomposed into three disjoint connected subgraphs G 1, G 2 and G 3 such that E G (G i , G j ) = {u i , u j , v i v j } for ij and i,j = 1, 2, 3 (where u i v i V(G i ) for i = 1, 2, 3). Moreover the bound 4δ is best possible, thereby fully generalizing several previous results. (2). Every 3-connected almost claw-free graph on at most 5δ−5 vertices is hamiltonian, hereby fully generalizing the corresponding result on claw-free graphs. We introduce a new class of graphs which we call P 3-dominated graphs. This class properly contains all quasi-claw-free graphs, and hence all claw-free graphs. Let G be a 2-connected P 3-dominated graph. We prove that G is hamiltonian if α(G 2) ≤ κ(G), with two exceptions: K 2,3 and K 1,1,3. We also prove that G is hamiltonian, if G is 3-connected and |V(G)| ≤ 5δ(G) − 5. These results extend known results on (quasi-)claw-free graphs. A known result obtained independently by Fan and Jung is that every 3-connected k-regular graph on n vertices contains a cycle of length at least min{3k,n}. This raises the question of how much can be said about the circumferences of 3-connected k-regular claw-free graphs. In this paper, we show that every 3-connected k-regular claw-free graph on n vertices contains a cycle of length at least min{6k-17,n}.  相似文献

The bandwidth of a graph is the minimum, over vertex labelings with distinct integers, of the maximum difference between labels on adjacent vertices. Kuang and McDiarmid proved that almost all n-vertex graphs have bandwidth . Thus the sum of the bandwidths of a graph and its complement is almost always at least ; we prove that it is always at most 2n−4 log 2 n+o(log n). The proofs involve improving the bounds on the Ramsey and Turán numbers of the “halfgraph”. Received: September 2, 1998?Final version received: November 29, 1999  相似文献

Untangling is a process in which some vertices in a drawing of a planar graph are moved to obtain a straight-line plane drawing. The aim is to move as few vertices as possible. We present an algorithm that untangles the cycle graph C n while keeping Ω(n 2/3) vertices fixed. For any connected graph G, we also present an upper bound on the number of fixed vertices in the worst case. The bound is a function of the number of vertices, maximum degree, and diameter of G. One consequence is that every 3-connected planar graph has a drawing δ such that at most O((nlog n)2/3) vertices are fixed in every untangling of δ.  相似文献

(2,k)-Factor-Critical Graphs and Toughness   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A graph is (r,k)-factor-critical if the removal of any set of k vertices results in a graph with an r-factor (i.e. with an r-regular spanning subgraph). We show that every τ-tough graph of order n with τ≥2 is (2,k)-factor-critical for every non-negative integer k≤min{2τ−2, n−3}, thus proving a conjecture as well as generalizing the main result of Liu and Yu in [4].  A graph is a strict-quasi parity (SQP) graph if every induced subgraph that is not a clique contains a pair of vertices with no odd chordless path between them (an “even pair”). We present an O(n 3) algorithm for recognizing planar strict quasi-parity graphs, based on Wen-Lian Hsu's decomposition of planar (perfect) graphs and on the (non-algorithmic) characterization of planar minimal non-SQP graphs given in [9]. The circumference of a graph is the length of its longest cycles. Results of Jackson, and Jackson and Wormald, imply that the circumference of a 3-connected cubic n-vertex graph is Ω(n0.694), and the circumference of a 3-connected claw-free graph is Ω(n0.121). We generalize and improve the first result by showing that every 3-edge-connected graph with m edges has an Eulerian subgraph with Ω(m0.753) edges. We use this result together with the Ryjá?ek closure operation to improve the lower bound on the circumference of a 3-connected claw-free graph to Ω(n0.753). Our proofs imply polynomial time algorithms for finding large Eulerian subgraphs of 3-edge-connected graphs and long cycles in 3-connected claw-free graphs.  相似文献

Let G be a simple graph with n vertices. For any , let , and , and and u and v has distance 2 in E(G)}. Let l ≥ 1 be an integer. A graph G on nl vertices is [l, n]-pan-connected if for any , and any integer m with lmn, G has a (u, v)-path of length m. In 1998, Wei and Zhu (Graphs Combinatorics 14:263–274, 1998) proved that for a three-connected graph on n ≥ 7 vertices, if NC(G) ≥ n − δ(G) + 1, then G is [6, n]-pan-connected. They conjectured that such graphs should be [5, n]-pan-connected. In this paper, we prove that for a three-connected graph on n ≥ 7 vertices, if NC 2(G) ≥ n − δ(G) + 1, then G is [5, n]-pan-connected. Consequently, the conjecture of Wei and Zhu is proved as NC 2(G) ≥ NC(G). Furthermore, we show that the lower bound is best possible and characterize all 2-connected graphs with NC 2(G) ≥ n − δ(G) + 1 which are not [4, n]-pan-connected.   相似文献

We consider random graphs withn labelled vertices in which edges are chosen independently and with probabilityc/n. We prove that almost every random graph of this kind contains a path of length ≧(1 −α(c))n where α(c) is an exponentially decreasing function ofc. If X is a geodesic metric space and x 1; x 2; x 3X, a geodesic triangle T = {x 1; x 2; x 3} is the union of the three geodesics [x 1 x 2], [x 2 x 3] and [x 3 x 1] in X. The space X is δ-hyperbolic (in the Gromov sense) if any side of T is contained in a δ-neighborhood of the union of the two other sides, for every geodesic triangle T in X. We denote by δ(X) the sharp hyperbolicity constant of X, i.e., δ(X) = inf {δ ≥ 0: X is δ-hyperbolic}. We obtain information about the hyperbolicity constant of cubic graphs (graphs with all of their vertices of degree 3), and prove that for any graph G with bounded degree there exists a cubic graph G* such that G is hyperbolic if and only if G* is hyperbolic. Moreover, we prove that for any cubic graph G with n vertices, we have δ(G) ≤ min {3n/16 + 1; n/4}. We characterize the cubic graphs G with δ(G) ≤ 1. Besides, we prove some inequalities involving the hyperbolicity constant and other parameters for cubic graphs.  相似文献

Given a function f : ℕ→ℝ, call an n-vertex graph f-connected if separating off k vertices requires the deletion of at least f(k) vertices whenever k≤(nf(k))/2. This is a common generalization of vertex connectivity (when f is constant) and expansion (when f is linear). We show that an f-connected graph contains a cycle of length linear in n if f is any linear function, contains a 1-factor and a 2-factor if f(k)≥2k+1, and contains a Hamilton cycle if f(k)≥2(k+1)2. We conjecture that linear growth of f suffices to imply hamiltonicity.  相似文献

A new sufficient condition for Hamiltonian graphs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The study of Hamiltonian graphs began with Dirac’s classic result in 1952. This was followed by that of Ore in 1960. In 1984 Fan generalized both these results with the following result: If G is a 2-connected graph of order n and max{d(u),d(v)}≥n/2 for each pair of vertices u and v with distance d(u,v)=2, then G is Hamiltonian. In 1991 Faudree–Gould–Jacobson–Lesnick proved that if G is a 2-connected graph and |N(u)∪N(v)|+δ(G)≥n for each pair of nonadjacent vertices u,vV(G), then G is Hamiltonian. This paper generalizes the above results when G is 3-connected. We show that if G is a 3-connected graph of order n and max{|N(x)∪N(y)|+d(u),|N(w)∪N(z)|+d(v)}≥n for every choice of vertices x,y,u,w,z,v such that d(x,y)=d(y,u)=d(w,z)=d(z,v)=d(u,v)=2 and where x,y and u are three distinct vertices and w,z and v are also three distinct vertices (and possibly |{x,y}∩{w,z}| is 1 or 2), then G is Hamiltonian.  相似文献

We prove that each 3-connected plane graph G without triangular or quadrangular faces either contains a k-path P k , a path on k vertices, such that each of its k vertices has degree ≤5/3k in G or does not contain any k-path. We also prove that each 3-connected pentagonal plane graph G which has a k-cycle, a cycle on k vertices, k∈ {5,8,11,14}, contains a k-cycle such that all its vertices have, in G, bounded degrees. Moreover, for all integers k and m, k≥ 3, k∉ {5,8,11,14} and m≥ 3, we present a graph in which every k-cycle contains a vertex of degree at least m. An H1,{H2}-factor of a graph G is a spanning subgraph of G with exactly one component isomorphic to the graph H1 and all other components (if there are any) isomorphic to the graph H2. We completely characterise the class of connected almost claw-free graphs that have a P7,{P2}-factor, where P7 and P2 denote the paths on seven and two vertices, respectively. We apply this result to parallel knock-out schemes for almost claw-free graphs. These schemes proceed in rounds in each of which each surviving vertex eliminates one of its surviving neighbours. A graph is reducible if such a scheme eliminates every vertex in the graph. Using our characterisation, we are able to classify all reducible almost claw-free graphs, and we can show that every reducible almost claw-free graph is reducible in at most two rounds. This leads to a quadratic time algorithm for determining if an almost claw-free graph is reducible (which is a generalisation and improvement upon the previous strongest result that showed that there was a O(n5.376) time algorithm for claw-free graphs on n vertices).  相似文献

IfGis a claw-free graph, then there is a graphcl(G) such that (i) Gis a spanning subgraph ofcl(G), (ii) cl(G) is a line graph of a triangle-free graph, and (iii) the length of a longest cycle inGand incl(G) is the same. A sufficient condition for hamiltonicity in claw-free graphs, the equivalence of some conjectures on hamiltonicity in 2-tough graphs and the hamiltonicity of 7-connected claw-free graphs are obtained as corollaries.  相似文献

Let G be a (V,E) graph of order p≥2. The double vertex graph U 2 (G) is the graph whose vertex set consists of all 2-subsets of V such that two distinct vertices {x,y} and {u,v} are adjacent if and only if |{x,y}∩{u,v}|=1 and if x=u, then y and v are adjacent in G. For this class of graphs we discuss the regularity, eulerian, hamiltonian, and bipartite properties of these graphs. A generalization of this concept is n-tuple vertex graphs, defined in a manner similar to double vertex graphs. We also review several recent results for n-tuple vertex graphs.  Let f(2m,k) be the Maximum k-diameter of k-regular k-connected graphs on 2m vertices. In this paper we give an algorithm and prove that we can construct k-regular k-connected graphs on 2m vertices with the maximum k-diameter using it. We also prove some known results about f(2m,k) and verify that we can get some unknown values of f(2m,k) by our algorithm. A classical result of Dirac's shows that, for any two edges and any n−2 vertices in a simple n-connected graph, there is a cycle that contains both edges and all n−2 of the vertices. Oxley has asked whether, for any two elements and any n−2 cocircuits in an n-connected matroid, there is a circuit that contains both elements and that has a non-empty intersection with all n−2 of the cocircuits. By using Seymour's decomposition theorem and results of Oxley and Denley and Wu, we prove that a slightly stronger property holds for regular matroids.  相似文献
