Numerous reports have focused on ferrocene-terminated electroactive self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on a flat Au surface but only a few on ferrocene SAMs on Au colloid. In this paper, we employ 4-ferrocene thiophenol as a novel capping agent to produce electroactive gold nanoparticles in consideration of the peculiar pi-conjugated structure. Transmission electron microscopy shows the narrow-dispersed gold core with an average core diameter of ca. 2.5 nm. UV/vis spectra examine the pi-conjugated structure of 4-ferrocene thiophenol and surface plasmon absorbance of the indicated gold nanoparticles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals electronic properties of the Au core and thiol ligands. Electrochemical measurement shows that the oxidation peak current is proportional to the scan rate, indicating the electrode process is controlled by adsorbed layer reaction. The formal potential of the Fc-MPCs is compared with that of free ferrocene in MeCN solution and the Fc-SAMs. The shifts are attributed to the phenyl moiety in the 4-ferrocene thiophenol and dielectric constant of the solvation environment.  相似文献

Diamondoids, hydrocarbon molecules with cubic-diamond-cage structures, have unique properties with potential value for nanotechnology. The availability and ability to selectively functionalize this special class of nanodiamond materials opens new possibilities for surface modification, for high-efficiency field emitters in molecular electronics, as seed crystals for diamond growth, or as robust mechanical coatings. The properties of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of diamondoids are thus of fundamental interest for a variety of emerging applications. This paper presents the effects of thiol substitution position and polymantane order on diamondoid SAMs on gold using near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). A framework to determine both molecular tilt and twist through NEXAFS is presented and reveals highly ordered diamondoid SAMs, with the molecular orientation controlled by the thiol location. C 1s and S 2p binding energies are lower in adamantane thiol than alkane thiols on gold by 0.67 +/- 0.05 and 0.16 +/- 0.04 eV, respectively. These binding energies vary with diamondoid monolayer structure and thiol substitution position, consistent with different degrees of steric strain and electronic interaction with the substrate. This work demonstrates control over the assembly, in particular the orientational and electronic structure, providing a flexible design of surface properties with this exciting new class of diamond nanoparticles.  相似文献

Alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au(111) are model systems for molecular electronics. We probe the role of the chemisorption bond on electron dynamics at the SAM/Au interface using time-resolved two-photon photoemission. Formation of the Au-S bond is evidenced by a localized sigma resonance, which broadens and shifts upward in energy when the lying-down chemisorbed molecules stand up. The localized chemisorption bond does not affect the electronic coupling between delocalized image resonances and the metal substrate. Instead, lifetimes of image resonances are decreased due to scattering with S atoms within the thiol or thiolate monolayer.  相似文献

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed from bis(biphenyl-4-yl) diselenide (BBPDSe) on Au(111) and Ag(111) substrates have been characterized by high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy, water contact angle measurements, and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). BBPDSe was found to form contamination-free, densely packed, and well-ordered biphenyl selenolate (BPSe) SAMs on both Au and Ag. Spectroscopic data suggest very similar packing density, orientational order, and molecular inclination in BPSe/Au and BPSe/Ag. STM data give a similar intermolecular spacing of 5.3 +/- 0.4 A on both Au and Ag but exhibit differences in the exact arrangement of the BPSe molecules on these two substrates, with the (2 square root[3] x square root[3])R30 degrees and (square root[3] x square root[3])R30 degrees unit cells on Au and Ag, respectively. There is strong evidence for adsorbate-mediated substrate restructuring in the case of Au, whereas no clear statement on this issue can be made in the case of Ag. The film quality of the BPSe SAMs is superior to their thiol analogues, which is presumably related to a better ability of the selenolates to adjust the surface lattice of the substrate to the most favorable 2D arrangement of the adsorbate molecules. This suggests that aromatic selenolates represent an attractive alternative to the respective thiols.  相似文献

Tribological properties of alkylsilane self-assembled monolayers   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this study, we perform molecular dynamics simulations of adhesive contact and friction between alkylsilane Si(OH)(3)(CX(2))(10)CX(3) and alkoxylsilane Si(OH)(2)(CX(2))(10)CX(3) (where X = H or F) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on an amorphous silica substrate. The alkylsilane SAMs are primarily hydrogen-bonded or physisorbed to the surface. The alkoxylsilane SAMs are covalently bonded or chemisorbed to the surface. Previously, we studied the chemisorbed systems. In this work, we study the physisorbed systems and compare the tribological properties with the chemisorbed systems. Furthermore, we examine how water at the interface of the SAMs and substrate affects the tribological properties of the physisorbed systems. When less than a third of a monolayer is present, very little difference in the microscopic friction coefficient mu or shear stresses is observed. For increasing amounts of water, the values of mu and the shear stresses decrease; this effect is somewhat more pronounced for fluorocarbon alkylsilane SAMs than for the hydrocarbon SAMs. The observed decrease in friction is a consequence of a slip plane that occurs in the water as the amount of water is increased. We studied the frictional behavior using relative shear velocities ranging from v = 2 cm/s to 2 m/s. Similar to previously reported results for alkoxylsilane SAMs, the values of the measured stress and mu for the alkylsilane SAM systems decrease monotonically with v.  相似文献

Microcontact printing (μCP) has developed into a powerful tool to functionalize surfaces with patterned molecular monolayers. μCP can also be used to induce a chemical reaction between a molecular ink and a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) in the nanoscale confinement between stamp and substrate. In this paper, we investigate the Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition, the Diels-Alder cycloaddition and the thiol-ene/yne reaction induced by μCP. A range of fluorescent alkyne inks were printed on azide SAMs and fluorescence microscopy was used to monitor the extent of the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition on a glass substrate. The rate of cycloaddition depends on the reactivity of the alkyne and on the presence of Cu(I). The cycloaddition is accelerated by Cu(I) but it also proceeds readily in the absence of Cu(I). In addition, a range of fluorescent diene inks were printed on alkene SAMs on glass. In this case, fluorescence microscopy was used to monitor the rate of the Diels-Alder cycloaddition as well as its retro-reaction. Finally, fluorescent thiol inks were printed on alkene SAMs on glass, and fluorescent alkenes and alkynes were printed on thiol SAMs. It is shown that reactions by μCP follow structure-reactivity relationships similar to solution reactions. Under optimized conditions all reactions lead to dense microarrays of addition products within minutes of printing time.  相似文献

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed from 4,4'-terphenyl-substituted alkanethiols C6H5(C6H4)2-(CH2)nSH (TPn, n = 1-6) on polycrystalline (111) gold and silver substrates have been characterized by synchrotron-based high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The intensities, binding energy positions, and width of most photoemission lines exhibited pronounced odd-even effects, i.e., systematic and periodic variation, depending on either odd or even number of the methylene units in the aliphatic linker of the TPn molecules. The detailed analysis of these effects provides important information on the bonding and arrangement of the chemisorbed sulfur headgroups in the TPn films and balance of the structural forces in alkanethiolate SAMs.  相似文献

Self-assembled monolayers(SAMs) of thiol-derivatized porphyrin molecules on Au substrate have attracted extensively interest for use in sensing, optoelectronic devices and molecular electronics. In this paper,tetra-[p-(3-mercaptopropyloxy)-phenyl]porphyrin was synthesized and self-assembled with thiol on Au substrate for porphyrin SAMs(PPS 4).The electrochemical results demonstrated that PPS 4 could form excellent SAMs on gold surface.Self-assembled nanojunctions of PPS 4 were fabricated by using gold nanogap electrodes(gap width:ca.100 nm). With the light on/off,the nanojunctions showed current high/low as nanometer scaled photo switch.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed to investigate odd-even chain length dependencies in the wetting properties of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of n-alkanethiols [CH3(CH2)n-1SH] on gold by water and hexadecane. Experimentally, the contact angle of hexadecane on the SAMs depends on whether n is odd or even, while contact angles for water show no odd-even dependence. Our MD simulations of this system included a microscopic droplet of either 256 water molecules or 60 hexadecane molecules localized on an n-alkanethiolate SAM on gold with either an even or odd chain length. Contact angles calculated for these nanoscopic droplets were consistent with experimentally observed macroscopic trends in wettability, namely, that hexadecane is sensitive to structural differences between odd- and even-chained SAMs while water is not. Structural properties for the SAMs (including features such as chain tilt, chain twist, and terminal methyl group tilt) were calculated during the MD simulations and used to generate IR spectra of these films that compared favorably with experimental spectra. MD simulations of SAMs in contact with slabs of water and hexadecane revealed that the effects of these solvents on the structure of the SAM was restricted to the chain terminus and had no effect on the inner structure of the SAM. The density profiles for water and hexadecane on the SAMs were different in that water displayed a significant depletion in its density at the liquid/SAM interface from its bulk value, while no such depletion occurred for hexadecane. This difference in contact may explain the lack of an odd-even variation in the wetting characteristics of water on these surfaces, because the water molecules are positioned further away from the surface and, therefore, are not sensitive to the structural differences in the average orientations for the terminal methyl groups in odd- and even-chained SAMs. In contrast, the differences in the wetting properties of hexadecane on the odd- and even-chained SAMs may reflect the closer proximity of these molecules to the SAM surface and a resulting greater sensitivity to the differences in the terminal methyl group orientations in the SAMs. SAM-solvent interaction energies were calculated during the MD simulations, yielding interaction energies that differed on the even- and odd-chained surfaces by approximately 10% for hexadecane and negligibly for water, in accord with estimates using experimental wetting results.  相似文献

The structure and electronic interface properties of five differently substituted benzenethiol based self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Cu(100) have been studied by means of low energy electron diffraction, thermal desorption spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (NEXAFS), and UV photoelectron spectroscopy. Because highly ordered SAMs are formed of which lateral density had been precisely determined, effective molecular dipole moments were derived from the measured work function shifts. These values are compared with gas phase dipole moments computed by quantum chemical calculations for the individual thiol molecules considering the molecular orientation determined from NEXAFS data. Furthermore, this comparison yields clear evidence for a coverage dependent depolarization effect of the adsorbed molecules within the SAMs.  相似文献

Self-assembled organization of functional molecules on solid surfaces has developed into a powerful and sophisticated tool for surface chemistry and nanotechnology. A number of reviews on the topic have been available since the mid 1990s. This perspective article aims to focus on recent development in the investigations of electronic structures and assembling dynamics of electrochemically controlled self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of thiol containing molecules on gold surfaces. A brief introduction is first given and particularly illustrated by a Table summarizing the molecules studied, the surface lattice structures and the experimental operating conditions. This is followed by discussion of two major high-resolution experimental methods, scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and single-crystal electrochemistry. In Section 3, we briefly address choice of supporting electrolytes and substrate surfaces, and their effects on the SAM structures. Section 4 constitutes the major body of the article by offering some details of recent studies for the selected cases, including in situ monitoring of assembling dynamics, molecular electronic structures, and the key external factors determining the SAM packing. In Section 5, we give examples of what can be offered by theoretical computations for the detailed understanding of the SAM electronic structures revealed by STM images. A brief summary of the current applications of SAMs in wiring metalloproteins, design and fabrication of sensors, and single-molecule electronics is described in Section 6. In the final two sections (7 and 8), we discuss the current status in understanding of electronic structures and properties of SAMs in electrochemical environments and what could be expected for future perspectives.  相似文献

A series of biphenyl-derived dithiol (BDDT) compounds with terminal acetyl-protected sulfur groups and different structural arrangements of both phenyl rings have been synthesized and fully characterized. The different arrangements were achieved by introducing hydrocarbon substituents in the 2 and 2' positions of the biphenyl backbone. The presented model compounds enable the investigation of the correlation between the intramolecular conformation and other physical properties of interest, like, e.g., molecular assembly or electronic transport properties. Here, the ability of these model compounds to form self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au(111) and Ag(111) is investigated in details. The deprotection of the target molecules was performed in situ using either NH4OH or triethylamine (TEA) deprotection agent. The fabricated films were characterized by synchrotron-based high-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy and near-edge absorption fine structure spectroscopy. Whereas the deprotection by NH4OH was found to result in the formation of multilayer films, the deprotection by TEA allowed the preparation of densely packed BDDT SAMs with a noticeably higher orientational order and smaller molecular inclination on Ag than on Au. Introduction of the alkyl bridge between the individual rings of the biphenyl backbone did not lead to a noticeable change in the structure and packing density of the BDDT SAMs as long as the molecule had a planar conformation in the respective SAM. The deviation from this conformation resulted in the deterioration of the film quality and a decrease of the orientational order.  相似文献

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanols (1-C(N)H(2N+1)OH) with varying carbon-chain lengths (N = 10-30) have been systematically studied by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at the interfaces between alkanol solutions (or liquids) and Au(111) surfaces. The carbon skeletons were found to lie flat on the surfaces. This orientation is consistent with SAMs of alkanols on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and MoS2 surfaces, and also with alkanes on reconstructed Au(111) surfaces. This result differs from a prior report, which claimed that 1-decanol molecules (N = 10) stood on their ends with the OH polar groups facing the gold substrate. Compared to alkanes, the replacement of one terminal CH3 group with an OH group introduces new bonding features for alkanols owing to the feasibility of forming hydrogen bonds. While SAMs of long-chain alkanols (N > 18) resemble those of alkanes, in which the aliphatic chains make a greater contribution, hydrogen bonding plays a more important role in the formation of SAMs of short-chain alkanols. Thus, in addition to the titled lamellar structure, a herringbone-like structure, seldom seen in SAMs of alkanes, is dominant in alkanol SAMs for values of N < 18. The odd-even effect present in alkane SAMs is also present in alkanol SAMs. Thus, the odd N alkanols (alkanols with an odd number of carbon atoms) adopt perpendicular lamellar structures owing to the favorable interactions of the CH3 terminal groups, similar to the result observed for odd alkanes. In contrast to alkanes on Au(111) surfaces, for which no SAMs on an unreconstructed gold substrate were observed, alkanols are capable of forming SAMs on either the reconstructed or the unreconstructed gold surfaces. Structural models for the packing of alkanol molecules on Au(111) surfaces have been proposed, which successfully explain these experimental observations.  相似文献

Homogeneous and mixed [with biphenylthiol (BPT)] self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of ferrocene-substituted biphenyl ethynyl thiols (Fc) were prepared on Au(111) substrates and characterized by several complementary spectroscopic techniques. The mixed films were fabricated either by subsequent immersion of the substrates into the BPT and Fc solutions or by immersion of the substrate into a mixed solution of BPT and Fc. The first procedure resulted in the preparation of high-quality mixed SAMs, in which the Fc molecules were stochastically distributed in the BPT matrix and well-separated from each other. The portion of these molecules in such films could be precisely varied from ca. 7 to 42% by selection of the immersion time in the BPT solution. The films prepared from the mixed solution exhibited a phase separation between the Fc and BPT constituents. These films contained mostly the Fc molecules ( approximately 80-90%), showing, thus, a significant deviation from the relative content of the target molecules in the primary solution (a 1:1 ratio). This finding shows that the Fc molecules, when competing with BPT, preferably adsorb onto Au(111) substrate, suggesting a significant impact of the ferrocene groups onto the structure-building interactions responsible for molecular self-assembly.  相似文献

The development of high‐performance molecular electronics and nanotech applications requires deep understanding of atomic level structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of electrode/molecular interfaces. Recent electrochemical experiments on self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs) have identified highly practical means to generate nanoparticles and metal monolayers suspended above substrate surfaces through SAM metallizations. A rational basis why this process is even possible is not yet well‐understood. To clarify the initial stages of interface formation during SAM metallization, we used first‐principles spin‐polarized density functional theory (DFT) calculations to study Pd diffusion on top of 4‐mercaptopyridine (4MP) SAMs on Au(111). After distinguishing potential‐energy surfaces (PESs) for different spin configurations for transition metal atoms on the SAM, we find adatom diffusion is not possible over the clean 4MP–SAM surface. Pre‐adsorption of transition‐metal atoms, however, facilitates atomic diffusion that appears to explain multiple reports on experimentally observed island and monolayer formation on top of SAMs. Furthermore, these diffusions most likely occur by moving across low‐lying and intersecting PESs of different spin states, opening the possibility of magnetic control over these systems. Vertical diffusion processes were also investigated, and the electrolyte was found to play a key role in preventing metal permeation through the SAM to the substrate.  相似文献

The electrical properties of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on metal surfaces have been explored for a series of molecules to address the relation between the behavior of a molecule and its structure. We probed interfacial electron transfer processes, particularly those involving unoccupied states, of SAMs of thiolates or arylates on Au by using shear force-based scanning probe microscopy (SPM) combined with current-voltage (i-V) and current-distance (i-d) measurements. The i-V curves of hexadecanethiol in the low bias regime were symmetric around 0 V and the current increased exponentially with V at high bias voltage. Different than hexadecanethiol, reversible peak-shaped i-V characteristics were obtained for most of the nitro-based oligo(phenylene ethynylene) SAMs studied here, indicating that part of the conduction mechanism of these junctions involved resonance tunneling. These reversible peaked i-V curves, often described as a negative differential resistance (NDR) effect of the junction, can be used to define a threshold tip bias, V(TH), for resonant conduction. We also found that for all of the SAMs studied here, the current decreased with increasing distance, d, between tip and substrate. The attenuation factor beta of hexadecanethiol was high, ranging from 1.3 to 1.4 A(-1), and was nearly independent of the tip bias. The beta-values for nitro-based molecules were low and depended strongly on the tip bias, ranging from 0.15 A(-1) for tetranitro oligo(phenylene ethynylene) thiol, VII, to 0.50 A(-1) for dinitro oligo(phenylene) thiol, VI, at a -3.0 V tip bias. Both the V(TH) and beta values of these nitro-based SAMs were also strongly dependent on the structures of the molecules, e.g. the number of electroactive substituent groups on the central benzene, the molecular wire backbone, the anchoring linkage, and the headgroup. We also observed charge storage on nitro-based molecules. For a SAM of the dintro compound, V, approximately 25% of charge collected in the negative scan is stored in the molecules and can be collected at positive voltages. A possible mechanism involving lateral electron hopping is proposed to explain this phenomenon.  相似文献

Whereas thiols and thioethers are frequently used as binding units of oligodentate precursor molecules to fabricate self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on coinage metal and semiconductor surfaces, their use for tridentate bonding configuration is still questionable. Against this background, novel tridentate thiol ligands, PhSi(CH(2)SH)(3) (PTT) and p-Ph-C(6)H(4)Si(CH(2)SH)(3) (BPTT), were synthesized and used as tripodal adsorbate molecules for the fabrication of SAMs on Au(111). These SAMs were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. The PTT and BPTT films were compared with the analogous systems comprised of same tripodal ligands with thioether instead of thiol binding units (anchors). XPS and NEXAFS data suggest that the binding uniformity, packing density, and molecular alignment of the thiol-based ligands in the respective SAMs is superior to their thioether counterparts. In addition, the thiol-based films showed significantly lower levels of contamination. Significantly, the quality of the PTT SAMs on Au(111) was found to be even higher than that of the films formed from the respective monodentate counterpart, benzenethiol. The results obtained allow for making some general conclusions on the specific character of molecular self-assembly in the case of tridentate ligands.  相似文献

The reversible desorption and adsorption of ethanethiol (ET) and hexadecane thiol (HDT) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold substrates are addressed with potential-dependent AFM force measurements where both tip and substrate potentials are controlled independently. For HDT-modified tip and substrate, the potential dependence of the force curve corresponds to the observed voltammetric features. The adhesion interaction between HDT-modified tip and substrate exhibits a large adhesion, whereas the adhesion is reduced to one-quarter of its original value after HDT on the substrate is removed. The presence of both attractive features on the approach curve and large adhesion on retraction after thiol desorption are ascribed to micelle formation from the desorbed, insoluble, thiols above the Au surface. For the ET-modified tip and substrate, the force curve evinces time-dependent recovery after the thiol adsorption peak which arises from the finite time of diffusion of the desorbed thiol back to the substrate. However, the force curves exhibit little potential dependence when the ET-desorbed tip is interacted with ET-modified substrate.  相似文献
