We use conformal mapping techniques and analytic continuation to prove that the stress field inside a non-parabolic open inhomogeneity embedded in a matrix subjected to uniform remote anti-plane stresses can nevertheless remain uniform despite the presence of a screw dislocation in its vicinity. Furthermore, the internal uniform stresses inside the inhomogeneity are found to be independent of both the shape of the inhomogeneity and the presence of the screw dislocation. On the other hand, we find that the existence of the nearby screw dislocation exerts a significant influence on the non-parabolic shape of the inhomogeneity.

We prove that the interior stresses within both a non-parabolic open inhomogeneity and another interacting non-elliptical closed inhomogeneity can still remain constant when the matrix is simultaneously under the action of a screw dislocation and uniform remote anti-plane stresses. The constancy of interior stresses is realized through the construction of a conformal mapping function for the doubly connected domain occupied by the surrounding matrix. The mapping function is endowed with the information describing the screw dislocation via the incorporation of two specifically defined logarithmic terms. The constant interior stress fields are observed to be independent of the specific open and closed shapes of the two inhomogeneities and the existence of the screw dislocation. In contrast, the existence of the neighboring screw dislocation significantly affects the open and closed shapes of the two inhomogeneities.

This paper deals with the electro-elastic coupling interaction between a piezoelectric screw dislocation which is located inside the elliptical inhomogeneity and an electrically conductive confocal rigid line under remote anti-plane shear stresses and in-plane electrical loads in piezoelectric composite material. The analytical-functions of the complex potentials, stress fields and the image force acting on the piezoelectric screw dislocation are obtained based on the principle of conformal mapping, the method of series expansion, the technical of analytic continuation and the analysis of singularity of complex potentials. The rigid line and the piezoelectric material property combinations upon the image force and the equilibrium position of the dislocation are discussed in detail by the numerical computation.

Conformal mapping and analytic continuation are employed to prove the existence of an internal uniform electroelastic field inside a non-elliptical piezoelectric inhomogeneity interacting with a screw dislocation. We focus specifically on the case when the piezoelectric matrix surrounding the inhomogeneity is subjected to uniform remote anti-plane mechanical and in-plane electrical loading and a constraint is imposed between the remote loading and the screw dislocation. The constraint can be expressed in a relatively simple decoupled form by utilizing orthogonality relationships between two corresponding eigenvectors. The internal uniform electroelastic field is found to be independent of the presence of the screw dislocation; moreover, it can be expressed in decoupled form.

An analytical solution is derived for the problem of a nonuniformly coated circular inclusion in an unbounded matrix under anti-plane deformations. The inclusion/interphase/matrix system is subject to (1) remote uniform shear and uniform eigenstrain imposed on the circular inclusion, and (2) a screw dislocation or a point force in the matrix. It is found that the varying interphase thickness will exert a significant influence on the nonuniform stress field within the circular inclusion, and on the direction and magnitude of the image force acting on a screw dislocation. In the course of development, it is found that the presence of certain coated inclusions, which are termed stealth, will not cause change of elastic energy in the body. The derived analytical solution for a screw dislocation is then employed as Green’s function to investigate a radial matrix crack interacting with the nonuniformly coated inclusion. The numerical results show that the varying interphase thickness will also affect the stress intensity factors.

The interaction between a screw dislocation and an elastic semi-cylindrical inhomogeneity abutting on a rigid half-plane is investigated. Utilizing the image dislocations method, the closed form solutions of the stress fields in the matrix and the inhomogeneity region are derived. The image force acting on the dislocation is also calculated. The results were used to study the interaction between a screw dislocation and a rigid wedge inhomogeneity with an elastic circular inhomogeneity at the tip by means of conformal mapping. The results show that an unstable equilibrium point of the dislocation near the semi-cylindrical inhomogeneity is found when the inhomogeneity is softer than the matrix. Moreover, the force on the dislocation is strongly affected by the position of the dislocation and the shear modulus of the semi-circular inhomogeneity. Positive screw dislocations can reduce the SIF of the rigid wedge inhomogeneity (shielding effect) only when it located in the lower half-plane. The shielding effect increases with the increase of the shear modulu of both the matrix and the inhomogeneity and increases with the increase of the wedge angle. The shielding effect (or anti-shielding effect) reaches the maximum when the dislocation tends to the wedge inhomogeneity interface.

Anti-plane interaction of a crack with a coated elliptical hole embedded in an infinite matrix under a remote uniform shear load is considered in this paper. Analytical treatment of the present problem is laborious due to the presence of material inhomogeneities and geometric discontinuities. Nevertheless, based on the technique of conformal mapping and the method of analytical continuation in conjunction with the alternating technique, general expressions for displacements and stresses in the coated layer and the matrix are derived explicitly in closed form. By applying the existing complex function solutions for a dislocation, the integral equations for a line crack are formulated and mode-III stress intensity factors are obtained numerically. Some numerical examples are given to demonstrate the effects of material inhomogeneity and geometric discontinuities on mode-III stress intensity factors.

The elastic field of an elliptic nano inhomogeneity embedded in an infinite matrix under anti-plane shear is studied with the complex variable method. The interface stress effects of the nano inhomogeneity are accounted for with the Gurtin–Murdoch model. The conformal mapping method is then applied to solve the formulated boundary value problem. The obtained numerical results are compared with the existing closed form solutions for a circular nano inhomogeneity and a traditional elliptic inhomogeneity under anti-plane. It shows that the proposed semi-analytic method is effective and accurate. The stress fields inside the inhomogeneity and matrix are then systematically studied for different interfacial and geometrical parameters. It is found that the stress field inside the elliptic nano inhomogeneity is no longer uniform due to the interface effects. The shear stress distributions inside the inhomogeneity and matrix are size dependent when the size of the inhomogeneity is on the order of nanometers. The numerical results also show that the interface effects are highly influenced by the local curvature of the interface. The elastic field around an elliptic nano hole is also investigated in this paper. It is found that the traction free boundary condition breaks down at the elliptic nano hole surface. As the aspect ratio of the elliptic hole increases, it can be seen as a Mode-III blunt crack. Even for long blunt cracks, the surface effects can still be significant around the blunt crack tip. Finally, the equivalence between the uniform eigenstrain inside the inhomogeneity and the remote loading is discussed.

This paper formulates and examines the electro-elastic coupling effects resulting from the presence of a screw dislocation inside an elliptical piezoelectric inhomogeneity embedded in an infinite piezoelectric matrix. The general solution to this problem is obtained by conformal mapping and Laurent series expansion of the corresponding complex potentials. The appropriate expressions of the field potentials and the field components are given explicitly in both the inhomogeneity and the surrounding matrix using a perturbation technique. The internal energy and the force on the dislocation are computed and several specific examples are provided to illustrate the validity and versatility of the developed formulations.

We investigate a semi-infinite crack penetrating a piezoelectric circular inhomogeneity bonded to an infinite piezoelectric matrix through a linear viscous interface. The tip of the crack is at the center of the circular inhomogeneity. By means of the complex variable and conformal mapping methods, exact closed-form solutions in terms of elementary functions are derived for the following three loading cases: (i) nominal Mode-III stress and electric displacement intensity factors at infinity; (ii) a piezoelectric screw dislocation located in the unbounded matrix; and (iii) a piezoelectric screw dislocation located in the inhomogeneity. The time-dependent electroelastic field in the cracked composite system is obtained. Particularly the time-dependent stress and electric displacement intensity factors at the crack tip, jumps in the displacement and electric potential across the crack surfaces, displacement jump across the viscous interface, and image force acting on the piezoelectric screw dislocation are all derived. It is found that the value of the relaxation (or characteristic) time for this cracked composite system is just twice as that for the same fibrous composite system without crack. Finally, we extend the methods to the more general scenario where a semi-infinite wedge crack is within the inhomogeneity/matrix composite system with a viscous interface.

The solution for a circular inclusion with a prescribed anti-plane eigenstrain is derived. It is shown that the components of the Eshelby tensor within the inclusion, corresponding to a uniform eigenstrain, can be either uniform or non-uniform, depending on the imposed interface conditions. The stress amplification factors due to circular void or rigid inclusion in an infinite medium under remote anti-plane shear stress are calculated. The failure of the couple stress elasticity to reproduce the classical elasticity solution in the limit of vanishingly small characteristic length is indicated for a particular type of boundary conditions. The solution for a circular inhomogeneity in an infinitely extended matrix subjected to remote shear stress is then derived. The effects of the imposed interface conditions, the shear stress and couple stress discontinuities, and the relationship between the inhomogeneity and its equivalent eigenstrain inclusion problem are discussed.

The interaction of a screw dislocation with a circular inhomogeneity near the free surface is discussed in this paper. By using the complex potential and conformal mapping technique, an explicit series solution is obtained. Then, the solution is cast into a new expression to separate the interaction effects between the dislocation, inhomogeneity, and free surface. The new expression is not only convenient to reveal the coupling interaction effects, but also helpful to improve the convergence of the solution. As an application of the new expression, a simple approximate formula is presented with high accuracy. Finally, the full-field interaction energy and image force are evaluated and studied graphically. It is found that when the screw dislocation, inhomogeneity, and free surface are close to each other, their interaction effects strongly and intricately couple in the near field. In the case of a soft inhomogeneity or a hole, there is an unstable equilibrium point of the screw dislocation between the inhomogeneity and free surface, whereas in the case of a hard or rigid inhomogeneity, there is an unstable equilibrium point on the opposite side of the inhomogeneity.

The electroelastic interaction between a piezoelectric screw dislocation and an elliptical inhomogeneity containing a confocal blunt crack under infinite longitudinal shear and in-plane electric field is investigated. Using the sectionally holomorphic function theory, Cauchy singular integral, singularity analysis of complex functions and theory of Rieman boundary problem, the explicit series solution of stress field is obtained when the screw dislocation is located in inhomogeneity. The intervention law of the interaction between blunt crack and screw dislocation in inhomogeneity is discussed. The analytical expressions of generalized stress and strain field of inhomogeneity are calculated, while the image force, field intensity factors of blunt crack are also presented. Moreover, a new matrix expression of the energy release rate and generalized strain energy density (SED) are deduced. With the size variation of blunt crack, the results can be reduced to the case of the interaction between a piezoelectric screw dislocation and a line crack in inhomogeneity. Numerical analysis are then conducted to reveal the effects of the dislocation location, the size of inhomogeneity and blunt crack and the applied load on the image force, energy release rate and strain energy density. The influence of dislocation on energy release rate and strain energy density is also revealed.

The elastic behavior of a screw dislocation which is positioned inside the shell domain of an eccentric core–shell nanowire is addressed with taking into account the surface/interface stress effect. The complex potential function method in combination with the conformal mapping function is applied to solve the governing non-classical equations. The dislocation stress field and the image force acting on the dislocation are studied in detail and compared with those obtained within the classical theory of elasticity. It is shown that near the free outer surface and the inner core–shell interface, the non-classical solution for the stress field considerably differs from the classical one, while this difference practically vanishes in the bulk regions of the nanowire. It is also demonstrated that the surface with positive (negative) shear modulus applies an extra non-classical repelling (attracting) image force to the dislocation, which can change the nature of the equilibrium positions depending on the system parameters. At the same time, the non-classical solution fails when the dislocation approaches very close to the surface/interface with negative shear modulus. The effects of the core–shell eccentricity and nanowire diameter on dislocation behavior are discussed. It is shown that the non-classical surface/interface effect has a short-range character and becomes more pronounced when the nanowire diameter is smaller than 20 nm.

The electro-elastic interaction between a piezoelectric screw dislocation located either outside or inside inhomogeneity and circular interfacial rigid lines under anti-plane mechanical and in-plane electrical loads in linear piezoelectric materials is dealt with in the framework of linear elastic theory. Using Riemann–Schwarz’s symmetry principle integrated with the analysis of singularity of complex functions, the general solution of this problem is presented in this paper. For a special example, the closed form solutions for electro-elastic fields in matrix and inhomogeneity regions are derived explicitly when interface containing single rigid line. Applying perturbation technique, perturbation stress and electric displacement fields are obtained. The image force acting on piezoelectric screw dislocation is calculated by using the generalized Peach–Koehler formula. As a result, numerical analysis and discussion show that soft inhomogeneity can repel screw dislocation in piezoelectric material due to their intrinsic electro-mechanical coupling behavior and the influence of interfacial rigid line upon the image force is profound. When the radian of circular rigid line reaches extensive magnitude, the presence of interfacial rigid line can change the interaction mechanism.

This paper deals with an elastic orthotropic inhomogeneity problem due to non-uniform eigenstrains. The specific form of the distribution of eigenstrains is assumed to be a linear function in Cartesian coordinates of the points of the inhomogeneity. Based on the polynomial conservation theorem, the induced stress field inside the inhomogeneity which is also linear, is determined by the evaluation of 10 unknown real coefficients. These coefficients are derived analytically based on the principle of minimum potential energy of the elastic inhomogeneity/matrix system together with the complex function method and conformal transformation. The resulting stress field in the inhomogeneity is verified using the continuity conditions for the normal and shear stresses on the boundary. In addition, the present analytic solution can be reduced to known results for the case of uniform eigenstrain.
