. In this work we consider finite undirected simple graphs. If G=(V,E) is a graph we denote by α(G) the stability number of G. For any vertex x let N[x] be the union of x and the neighborhood N(x). For each pair of vertices ab of G we associate the set J(a,b) as follows. J(a,b)={uN[a]∩N[b]∣N(u)⊆N[a]∪N[b]}. Given a graph G, its partially squareG * is the graph obtained by adding an edge uv for each pair u,v of vertices of G at distance 2 whenever J(u,v) is not empty. In the case G is a claw-free graph, G * is equal to G 2. If G is k-connected, we cover the vertices of G by at most ⌈α(G *)/k⌉ cycles, where α(G *) is the stability number of the partially square graph of G. On the other hand we consider in G * conditions on the sum of the degrees. Let G be any 2-connected graph and t be any integer (t≥2). If ∑ x S deg G (x)≥|G|, for every t-stable set SV(G) of G * then the vertex set of G can be covered with t−1 cycles. Different corollaries on covering by paths are given.  Some known results on claw-free graphs are generalized to the larger class of almost claw-free graphs. In this paper, we prove the following two results and conjecture that every 5-connected almost claw-free graph is hamiltonian. (1). Every 2-connected almost claw-free graph GJ on n≤ 4 δ vertices is hamiltonian, where J is the set of all graphs defined as follows: any graph G in J can be decomposed into three disjoint connected subgraphs G 1, G 2 and G 3 such that E G (G i , G j ) = {u i , u j , v i v j } for ij and i,j = 1, 2, 3 (where u i v i V(G i ) for i = 1, 2, 3). Moreover the bound 4δ is best possible, thereby fully generalizing several previous results. (2). Every 3-connected almost claw-free graph on at most 5δ−5 vertices is hamiltonian, hereby fully generalizing the corresponding result on claw-free graphs. A graph G is called quasi-claw-free if for any two vertices x and y with distance two there exists a vertex uN(x)∩N(y) such that N[u]⊆N[x]∪N[y]. This concept is a natural extension of the classical claw-free graphs. In this paper, we present two sufficient conditions for vertex pancyclicity in quasi-claw-free graphs, namely, quasilocally connected and almost locally connected graphs. Our results include some well-known results on claw-free graphs as special cases. We also give an affirmative answer to a problem proposed by Ainouche.  相似文献

We say that G is almost claw-free if the vertices that are centers of induced claws (K1,3) in G are independent and their neighborhoods are 2-dominated. Clearly, every claw-free graph is almost claw-free. It is shown that (i) every even connected almost claw-free graph has a perfect matching and (ii) every nontrivial locally connected K1,4-free almost claw-free graph is fully cycle extendable.  相似文献

Hamiltonism and Partially Square Graphs   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
Given a graph G, we define its partially square graph G * as the graph obtained by adding edges uv whenever the vertices u and v have a common neighbor x satisfying the condition N G[x]⊆N G[u]∪N G [v], where N G[x]=N G(x)∪{x}. In particular, this condition is satisfied if x does not center a claw (an induced K 1,3). Obviously GG *G 2, where G 2 is the square of G. We prove that a k-connected graph (k≥2) G is hamiltonian if the independence number α(G *) of G * does not exceed k. If we replace G * by G we get a well known result of Chvátal and Erdo?s. If G is claw-free and G * is replaced by G 2 then we obtain a result of Ainouche, Broersma and Veldman. Relationships between connectivity of G and independence number of G * for other hamiltonian properties are also given in this paper. Received: June 17, 1996 Revised: October 30, 1998  相似文献

A set AV of the vertices of a graph G=(V,E) is an asteroidal set if for each vertex aA, the set A\{a} is contained in one component of GN[a]. The maximum cardinality of an asteroidal set of G, denoted by an (G), is said to be the asteroidal number of G. We investigate structural properties of graphs of bounded asteroidal number. For every k≥1, an (G)≤k if and only if an (H)≤k for every minimal triangulation H of G. A dominating target is a set D of vertices such that DS is a dominating set of G for every set S such that G[DS] is connected. We show that every graph G has a dominating target with at most an (G) vertices. Finally, a connected graph G has a spanning tree T such that d T (x,y)−d G (x,y)≤3·|D|−1 for every pair x,y of vertices and every dominating target D of G. Let G be a graph. For u,vV(G) with distG(u,v)=2, denote JG(u,v)={wNG(u)∩NG(v)|NG(w)NG(u)NG(v){u,v}}. A graph G is called quasi claw-free if JG(u,v)≠ for any u,vV(G) with distG(u,v)=2. In 1986, Thomassen conjectured that every 4-connected line graph is hamiltonian. In this paper we show that every 4-connected line graph of a quasi claw-free graph is hamiltonian connected.  相似文献

Let G be a simple graph with n vertices. For any v ? V(G){v \in V(G)} , let N(v)={u ? V(G): uv ? E(G)}{N(v)=\{u \in V(G): uv \in E(G)\}} , NC(G) = min{|N(u) èN(v)|: u, v ? V(G){NC(G)= \min \{|N(u) \cup N(v)|: u, v \in V(G)} and uv \not ? E(G)}{uv \not \in E(G)\}} , and NC2(G) = min{|N(u) èN(v)|: u, v ? V(G){NC_2(G)= \min\{|N(u) \cup N(v)|: u, v \in V(G)} and u and v has distance 2 in E(G)}. Let l ≥ 1 be an integer. A graph G on nl vertices is [l, n]-pan-connected if for any u, v ? V(G){u, v \in V(G)} , and any integer m with lmn, G has a (u, v)-path of length m. In 1998, Wei and Zhu (Graphs Combinatorics 14:263–274, 1998) proved that for a three-connected graph on n ≥ 7 vertices, if NC(G) ≥ n − δ(G) + 1, then G is [6, n]-pan-connected. They conjectured that such graphs should be [5, n]-pan-connected. In this paper, we prove that for a three-connected graph on n ≥ 7 vertices, if NC 2(G) ≥ n − δ(G) + 1, then G is [5, n]-pan-connected. Consequently, the conjecture of Wei and Zhu is proved as NC 2(G) ≥ NC(G). Furthermore, we show that the lower bound is best possible and characterize all 2-connected graphs with NC 2(G) ≥ n − δ(G) + 1 which are not [4, n]-pan-connected.  相似文献

For a nontrivial connected graph G, let ${c: V(G)\to {{\mathbb N}}}For a nontrivial connected graph G, let c: V(G)? \mathbb N{c: V(G)\to {{\mathbb N}}} be a vertex coloring of G, where adjacent vertices may be colored the same. For a vertex v of G, let N(v) denote the set of vertices adjacent to v. The color sum σ(v) of v is the sum of the colors of the vertices in N(v). If σ(u) ≠ σ(v) for every two adjacent vertices u and v of G, then c is called a sigma coloring of G. The minimum number of colors required in a sigma coloring of a graph G is called its sigma chromatic number σ(G). The sigma chromatic number of a graph G never exceeds its chromatic number χ(G) and for every pair a, b of positive integers with ab, there exists a connected graph G with σ(G) = a and χ(G) = b. There is a connected graph G of order n with σ(G) = k for every pair k, n of positive integers with kn if and only if kn − 1. Several other results concerning sigma chromatic numbers are presented.  相似文献

For two vertices u and v of a connected graph G, the set I[u,v] consists of all those vertices lying on a uv shortest path in G, while for a set S of vertices of G, the set I[S] is the union of all sets I[u,v] for u,vS. A set S is convex if I[S]=S. The convexity number con(G) of G is the maximum cardinality of a proper convex set of G. The clique number ω(G) is the maximum cardinality of a clique in G. If G is a connected graph of order n that is not complete, then n≥3 and 2≤ω(G)≤con(G)≤n−1. It is shown that for every triple l,k,n of integers with n≥3 and 2≤lkn−1, there exists a noncomplete connected graph G of order n with ω(G)=l and con(G)=k. Other results on convex numbers are also presented. Received: August 19, 1998 Final version received: May 17, 2000  相似文献

A graph G is (2, 1)-colorable if its vertices can be partitioned into subsets V 1 and V 2 such that each component in G[V 1] contains at most two vertices while G[V 2] is edgeless. We prove that every graph with maximum average degree mad(G) < 7/3 is (2, 1)-colorable. It follows that every planar graph with girth at least 14 is (2, 1)-colorable. We also construct a planar graph G n with mad (G n ) = (18n − 2)/(7n − 1) that is not (2, 1)-colorable.  相似文献

The signed distance-k-domination number of a graph is a certain variant of the signed domination number. If v is a vertex of a graph G, the open k-neighborhood of v, denoted by N k (v), is the set N k (v) = {u: uv and d(u, v) ⩽ k}. N k [v] = N k (v) ⋃ {v} is the closed k-neighborhood of v. A function f: V → {−1, 1} is a signed distance-k-dominating function of G, if for every vertex . The signed distance-k-domination number, denoted by γ k,s (G), is the minimum weight of a signed distance-k-dominating function on G. The values of γ 2,s (G) are found for graphs with small diameter, paths, circuits. At the end it is proved that γ 2,s (T) is not bounded from below in general for any tree T.  相似文献

The supereulerian graph problem, raised by Boesch et al. (J Graph Theory 1:79–84, 1977), asks when a graph has a spanning eulerian subgraph. Pulleyblank showed that such a decision problem, even when restricted to planar graphs, is NP-complete. Jaeger and Catlin independently showed that every 4-edge-connected graph has a spanning eulerian subgraph. In 1992, Zhan showed that every 3-edge-connected, essentially 7-edge-connected graph has a spanning eulerian subgraph. It was conjectured in 1995 that every 3-edge-connected, essentially 5-edge-connected graph has a spanning eulerian subgraph. In this paper, we show that if G is a 3-edge-connected, essentially 4-edge-connected graph and if for every pair of adjacent vertices u and v, d G (u) + d G (v) ≥ 9, then G has a spanning eulerian subgraph.  相似文献

Let G = (V, E) be a connected graph. X belong to V(G) is a vertex set. X is a 3-restricted cut of G, if G- X is not connected and every component of G- X has at least three vertices. The 3-restricted connectivity κ3(G) (in short κ3) of G is the cardinality of a minimum 3-restricted cut of G. X is called κ3-cut, if |X| = κ3. A graph G is κ3-connected, if a 3-restricted cut exists. Let G be a graph girth g ≥ 4, κ3(G) is min{d(x) + d(y) + d(z) - 4 : xyz is a 2-path of G}. It will be shown that κ3(G) = ξ3(G) under the condition of girth.  相似文献

Mycielski introduced a new graph transformation μ(G) for graph G, which is called the Mycielskian of G. A graph G is super connected or simply super-κ (resp. super edge connected or super-λ), if every minimum vertex cut (resp. minimum edge cut) isolates a vertex of G. In this paper, we show that for a connected graph G with |V(G)| ≥ 2, μ(G) is super-κ if and only if δ(G) < 2κ(G), and μ(G) is super-λ if and only if G\ncong K2{G\ncong K_2}.  相似文献

A new sufficient condition for Hamiltonian graphs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The study of Hamiltonian graphs began with Dirac’s classic result in 1952. This was followed by that of Ore in 1960. In 1984 Fan generalized both these results with the following result: If G is a 2-connected graph of order n and max{d(u),d(v)}≥n/2 for each pair of vertices u and v with distance d(u,v)=2, then G is Hamiltonian. In 1991 Faudree–Gould–Jacobson–Lesnick proved that if G is a 2-connected graph and |N(u)∪N(v)|+δ(G)≥n for each pair of nonadjacent vertices u,vV(G), then G is Hamiltonian. This paper generalizes the above results when G is 3-connected. We show that if G is a 3-connected graph of order n and max{|N(x)∪N(y)|+d(u),|N(w)∪N(z)|+d(v)}≥n for every choice of vertices x,y,u,w,z,v such that d(x,y)=d(y,u)=d(w,z)=d(z,v)=d(u,v)=2 and where x,y and u are three distinct vertices and w,z and v are also three distinct vertices (and possibly |{x,y}∩{w,z}| is 1 or 2), then G is Hamiltonian.  相似文献

Let G be a κ-connected graph on n vertices. The partially square graphG* of G is obtained by adding edges uv whenever the vertices u,v have a common neighbor x satisfying the condition NG(x)⊂NG[u]∪NG[v]. Clearly GG*G2, where G2 is the square of G. In particular G*=G2 if G is quasi-claw-free (and claw-free). In this paper we prove that a κ-connected, (κ?3) graph G is either hamiltonian-connected or the independence number of G* is at least κ. As a consequence we answer positively two open questions. The first one by Ainouche and Kouider and the second one by Wu et al. As a by-product we prove that a quasi-claw-free (and hence a claw-free) graph satisfying the condition α(G2)<κ is hamiltonian-connected.  相似文献

Untangling is a process in which some vertices in a drawing of a planar graph are moved to obtain a straight-line plane drawing. The aim is to move as few vertices as possible. We present an algorithm that untangles the cycle graph C n while keeping Ω(n 2/3) vertices fixed. For any connected graph G, we also present an upper bound on the number of fixed vertices in the worst case. The bound is a function of the number of vertices, maximum degree, and diameter of G. One consequence is that every 3-connected planar graph has a drawing δ such that at most O((nlog n)2/3) vertices are fixed in every untangling of δ.  相似文献

Let G be a simple graph of order n and girth g. For any two adjacent vertices u and v of G, if d G (u) + d G (v) ⩾ n − 2g + 5 then G is up-embeddable. In the case of 2-edge-connected (resp. 3-edge-connected) graph, G is up-embeddable if d G (u) + d G (v) ⩾ n − 2g + 3 (resp. d G (u) + d G (v) ⩾ n − 2g −5) for any two adjacent vertices u and v of G. Furthermore, the above three lower bounds are all shown to be tight. This work was supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant No. 10571013)  相似文献

Let G be a graph, for any u∈V(G),let N(u) denote the neighborhood of u and d(u)=|N(u)| be the degree of u. For any U V(G) ,let N(U)=Uu,∈UN(u), and d(U)=|N(U)|.A graph G is called claw-free if it has no induced subgraph isomorphic to K1.3. One of the fundamental results concerning cycles in claw-free graphs is due to Tian Feng,et al. : Let G be a 2-connected claw-free graph of order n,and d(u) d(v) d(w)≥n-2 for every independent vertex set {u,v,w} of G, then G is Hamiltonian. It is proved that, for any three positive integers s ,t and w,such that if G is a (s t w-1)connected claw-free graph of order n,and d(S) d(T) d(W)>n-(s t w) for every three disjoint independent vertex sets S,T,W with |S |=s, |T|=t, |W|=w,and S∪T∪W is also independent ,then G is Hamiltonian. Other related results are obtained too.  相似文献
