Resistively shunted junction dynamics is applied to the three-dimensional uniformly frustrated XY model with randomly perturbed couplings, as a model for driven steady states in a type-II superconductor with quenched point pinning. For a disorder strength p strong enough to produce a vortex glass in equilibrium, we map the phase diagram as a function of temperature T and uniform driving current I. Using finite size analysis and averaging over many realizations of quenched randomness we find a first-order melting T(m)(I) from a vortex line smectic to an anisotropic liquid.  相似文献

Vortex-sheet growth is considered. Broken symmetry bifurcations are found in the growth process. The collective elasticity theory for a well-developed vortex sheet is presented, which is similar to that of smectic liquid crystals. The bifurcations in the limit of a much folded vortex sheet correspond to the Helfrich instability in smectics and cholesterics.  相似文献

In an isotropic type II superconductor in a moderate magnetic field, the transition to the normal state occurs by vortex lattice melting. In certain anisotropic cases, the vortices acquire elongated cross sections and interactions. Systems of anisotropic, interacting constituents generally exhibit liquid crystalline phases. We examine the possibility of a two step melting in homogeneous type II superconductors with anisotropic superfluid stiffness from a vortex lattice into first a vortex smectic and then a vortex nematic at high temperature and magnetic field. We find that fluctuations of the ordered phase favor an instability to an intermediate smectic-A in the absence of intrinsic pinning.  相似文献

The influence of the finite dimension of a chiral smectic C liquid crystal planar sample on the helical pitch length is discussed. The discussion is based on the properties of the disclination PH2 system described in Czech. J. Phys. B35 (1985) 655. It is concluded that the existence of the sample free surface can lead to pitch changes with respect to the pitch of a perfect infinite chiral smectic C liquid crystal.  相似文献

A discontinuity wall in smectic A liquid crystals was discussed in M. Kléman:Points, Lines and Walls in Liquid Crystals, Magnetic Systems and Various Ordered Media (J. Wiley, Chichester, 1983). Possible solutions describing a singularity — twist disclination which terminates the discontinuity wall in an infinite model smectic A liquid crystal are discussed. One of solutions proposed can be used to describe the so-called zigzag defect line in chiral smectic C liquid crystals on which opposite oriented chevrons are terminated. We present an ellipsometric study of the interface between a smectic liquid crystal and water in the presence of a nonionic surfactant. The surfactant concentration serves as a handle to tune the surface field. For sufficiently large surfactant concentrations, a smectic phase is present at the interface in the temperature range above the smectic-A-isotropic bulk transition; when the bulk transition is approached, the thickness of this surface phase grows via a series of layer-by-layer transitions at which single smectic layers are formed. At lower surfactant concentrations, transitions appear at which the thickness of the surface phase jumps by multiple smectic layers, thereby implying the existence of triple points at which surface phases with different smectic layer numbers coexist. This is the first experimental demonstration of such surface triple points which are predicted by theoretical models.  相似文献

Chiral liquid crystals, for which twist and smectic order strongly compete, can exhibit complex architectures. This is the case of the SmQ phase which shows a high degree of 3D order (tetragonal or hexagonal) as well as a liquid signature. We have combined X-ray scattering and optical observations on a new compound exhibiting a SmQ phase to discriminate between the two models proposed by A.M. Levelut et al. (J. Phys. 计算了二维无序钉扎系统中磁通运动的平均速度、微分电阻、纵向电压噪声和静态结构因子.通过在不同磁通密度下的磁通运动形式,给出了磁通运动的动力学相图.研究表明,磁通晶格存在钉扎相、塑性流相、近晶流相,和运动玻璃相.在运动玻璃相中,随着驱动力的进一步增加,横向玻璃态和运动Bragg玻璃态相继出现.磁通密度增大有利于有序相的出现.当磁通密度增大到一定程度时,近晶流动相会消失.磁通运动随着外加驱动电流增大发生从塑性流动相到运动玻璃相的转变 关键词: Ⅱ类超导体 磁通动力学 运动玻璃  相似文献

The dynamic transition between ordered flow and plastic flow is studied for a two-dimensional driven vortex lattice, in the presence of sharp and dense pinning centers, from numerical simulations. For this system, which does not show smectic ordering, the lattice exhibits a first order transition from a crystal to a liquid, shortly followed by the dynamical transition to plastic flow. The resistivity provides a critical order parameter for the latter, and critical exponents are determined in analogy with a percolation transition. At the boundary between a pinned region and an unpinned one, an anomalous layer is observed, where the vortices are more strongly pinned than in the bulk. Received 22 September 2001  相似文献

A method is described for determination of bulk values of a twist elastic coefficient for smectic c-director in chiral smectic liquid crystals with a helical structure. The method was applied to 4-methylbutyloxy phenyl-4-octyloxy-benzoate (C8) in the chiral smectic C* phase. The measurements were performed using optical detection in a small deformation limit. In contrast to the usual methods, initial deformation of the helix (caused by strong surface interactions) was avoided by using homeotropic aligned thick samples. The critical temperature dependence of the measured coefficient was observed. The relation between the measured parameter and the smectic C order parameter is presented.  相似文献

We report here on the first direct observations of the vortex lattice in the bulk of electron-doped Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4 single crystals. Using small-angle neutron scattering, we have observed a square vortex lattice with the nearest neighbors oriented at 45 degrees from the Cu-O bond direction, which is consistent with theories based on the d-wave superconducting gap. However, the square symmetry persists down to unusually low magnetic fields. Moreover, the diffracted intensity from the vortex lattice is found to decrease rapidly with increasing magnetic field.  相似文献

A Chen-Lubensky energy is used to investigate phase transitions from chiral nematic to smectic C* and smectic A* liquid crystal phases. We consider a liquid crystalline material Ω confined between two parallel plates, where the dimensions of Ω are assumed to be large relative both to the width of a smectic layer and the material’s chiral pitch. We take boundary conditions so that the smectic phase melts at the plates’ surfaces and prove the existence of energy minimizers in an admissible set consisting of order parameters and molecular directors . Then under the physically observed assumption that the Frank elasticity constants become large near a phase transition, we establish estimates for the transition region separating phases. In particular we derive analytic estimates proving that chirality lowers the transition temperature regime above which minimizers are nematic and below which minimizers are in a smectic phase.Research supported by NSF grants DMS-0306516 and DMS-0456286.  相似文献

We have studied doping evolution of the temperature dependent local Cu-O displacements in the La2-x Sr x CuO4 superconductor by polarized Cu K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements. While temperature dependent Debye-Waller factor of the Cu-O bonds, measuring the local Cu-O displacements, shows an anomalous increase at low temperature for the underdoped single crystals, we do not find such a dependence for the case of the overdoped system. We investigate thermodynamic properties and spontaneous polarization of ferroelectric liquid crystal (SmC*LC) systems: smectic C matrix + chiral adding (ChA). The fact of existence of an optimum concentration of ChA, for which the studied SmC*LC systems have the maximum value of spontaneous polarization, and a certain concentration, at which the phase transition of the chiral tilted smectic C phase to the smectic A phase occurs, is established. Temperature dependence curves for the free energy, configuration energy, specific heat, and the orientational order parameter are calculated in the temperature range of existence of liquid crystal mesophases. The curves are in good agreement with the experimentally observed trends of the SmC*LC properties.  相似文献

AbstractThe phase states and phase transitions in a system consisting of a two-dimensional vortex lattice with defects are studied by the Monte Carlo method. It is shown that a “rotating lattice” phase, which is an intermediate phase between the vortex crystal and vortex liquid phases, is present. The dependence of the temperature of the transition from the rotating lattice phase into a vortex liquid on the strength of the defect potential is determined. The current-voltage characteristics of the system are calculated at various temperatures for point, square, and linear defects. It is shown that the phase state of the system strongly affects its transport properties.  相似文献

Based on a thermodynamic model, we investigate how the density variation influences the smectic (Sm A)–isotropic (I) phase transition. We find that the density variation shifts the smectic A–isotropic transition temperature, however, first-order nature of the transition remains the same. Here, we also examine the effect of high pressure on the thermodynamic quantities. The present analysis shows that the pressure strongly influences the enthalpy and density step at the clearing transition. The pressure dependence of the thermodynamic properties is incorporated through the pressure dependent second Landau coefficient and the coefficients which couple the nematic and smectic order parameters to the density. We find a close agreement between theoretical and experimental results. Furthermore, we discuss the implications of the results for achiral liquid crystals.  相似文献

The tilted smectic C phase is a rather uncommon phase in ionic liquid crystals (ILCs), whereas the orthogonal smectic A phase is the most common phase in ILCs. We now present 2 new groups of mesogens with an azobenzene core that exhibit smectic C as well as smectic A phases. Their phase sequences and tilt angles were studied by polarizing microscopy, and their temperature‐dependent layer spacings and orientational order parameters were investigated by X‐ray diffraction. We present 1 new amidinium azobenzene mesogen that forms enantiotropic smectic C and A phases and another amidinium as well as 2 new guanidinium azobenzene mesogens that exhibit monotropic smectic C and enantiotropic smectic A phases. With this study, we show that azobenzene is indeed an SmC‐promoting group in ILCs. Comparing these results with our earlier results on azobenzenes with an N‐methylimidazolium head group (N Kapernaum et al, ChemPhysChem 2016, 17, 4116‐4123), we show that the aromaticity of the imidazolium head group plays an important role in the formation of smectic C phases.  相似文献

A generalized methodology, based on anisotropic angular dependent magnetoresistance measurements, is presented to deconvolute the contributions to the vortex activation energy (i.e., plastic and pinning energies) in the vortex liquid state of high temperature superconductors. Experimental evidence is given for the appearance of a partially entangled liquid vortex state in YBa 2Cu 3O (7) when random quenched and correlated disorders compete, as in twinned melt textured YBa 2Cu 3O (7) quasisingle crystals with Y 2BaCuO (5) precipitates. The hallmark of this new phase is a quench of the c-axis vortex correla-tion length.  相似文献
