Summary: Conjugated three‐ and four‐arm star polymers were successfully prepared by palladium catalyzed one‐pot Suzuki polycondensation of the multifunctional cores and an AB‐type monomer. The molecular weight of the star polymers could be controlled by the feed ratios of the monomers. The bromo end groups could be completely modified by fluorene mono boronic acid or triphenylamine mono boronic ester. The investigation of the optical, electrochemical, and thermal properties of the star polymers was also reported. All polymers exhibited good thermal stabilities and all the TPA‐capped polymers showed good hole‐transport abilities.

One‐dimensional methyl orange fibrils can be easily prepared. They are stable in acidic aqueous solutions and soluble in neutral water. When used to synthesize conducting polymer microtubules, the fibrils act as “hard templates” formally but as “soft templates” effectively. Microtubular structures of polypyrrole, polyaniline, and poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) have been achieved successfully via such water‐soluble versatile templates.

Summary: New polymer gelators consisting of poly(propylene glycol) or poly(ethylene glycol) and L ‐lysine‐based low‐molecular‐weight gelators have been developed. These polymer gelators were synthesized according to a simple procedure with high reaction yield, and formed organogels in many organic solvents. The organogelation mechanism was proposed from the transmission electron microscopy and FTIR spectroscopy studies.

The preparation of metal nanoparticles generally requires the use of mostly toxic reducing agents according to state‐of‐the‐art procedures. Here, we report that polysorbate 80, a polymeric nonionic surfactant, when reacted with a gold salt in water at room temperature, yields well‐dispersed gold nanoparticles. Furthermore, we could control the particle size by simply altering concentration or temperature. The synthetic procedure presented here is easy, inexpensive, straightforward, and user‐friendly.

Summary: Magnetic nanoparticles have been prepared by a co‐precipitation method and modified with methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane. Magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer particles have been prepared by suspension polymerization in silicone oil. The particles possess a high affinity to the template molecules and are rapidly separated under a magnetic field.

We describe an enzyme‐responsive polymeric vehicle, which is of great interest in controlled drug delivery, biosensing, and other related areas. The polymer synthesized using lipase as catalyst in DMSO has a favorable molecular structure that is quickly hydrolyzed by lipase in aqueous phase, and allows a fast release of encapsulated molecules.

Summary: Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was derivatized by polymer analogous reaction with thienyl acryloyl chloride and processed to submicrometer fibers by electrospinning from aqueous solution. Water solubility of otherwise water‐soluble PVA fibers was reduced considerably by UV crosslinking of thienyl acrylate modified PVA fibers in the solid state. Water stability of these crosslinked fibers was proven by water steam test at 95 °C.

One of the most important events in free‐radical emulsion polymerization is desorption of radicals from the polymer particles to the aqueous phase. Desorption takes place by diffusion of radicals inside the particle toward the surface and transfer to the aqueous phase. The rate of desorption can be determined theoretically for homogeneous spherical particles. For more complex cases, analytical solutions become difficult or impossible to obtain and a numerical approach is better suited for estimating desorption rate coefficients. In this paper, Brownian dynamics simulation is used for the estimation of desorption rate coefficients in emulsion polymerization systems of increased complexity, in particular for non‐homogeneous polymer particles.

Summary: The evolution of the photoinduced birefringence in thin films of narrow polymer fractions is studied and compared with the behavior of the non‐fractionated polymer. The Δnind value decreases by increasing the degree of polymerization ( ) within the oligomeric range but becomes independent of molecular weight starting from a of ≈70. Thermal pretreatment of the films results in higher photoinduced birefringence. The films show good stability of the photorecording.

Summary: We describe an interesting approach to the fabrication of wettability gradients from hydrophobicity to superhydrophobicity in low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) films by first forming high porosity surfaces and placing the specimens onto linear temperature gradients. While the polymer chosen for the study is non‐polar, its microporous layer provides sufficient superhydrophobicity. Lateral gradient heating of the layer results in partial melting of the polymer and correspondingly decreases porosity thus decreasing hydrophobicity.

In this work, we report the design of a new multi‐functional, water‐soluble conjugated polymer integrating both a DNA intercalator and a redox label. Based on this multi‐functional conjugated polymer, we develop a sequence‐specific electrochemical DNA sensor, where the acridine unit serves as the basis for sequence discrimination, and the ferrocene label provides the electrochemical signal. Moreover, the conjugated polythiophene helps transfer electrons from ferrocene to the electrode. This sensor provides a new way for rapid and convenient detection of DNA targets.

The synthesis of cationic mono‐(6‐O‐(1‐vinylimidazolium))‐ß‐cyclodextrin with toluenesulfonate as the corresponding anion is described. Free‐radical copolymerization of the resulting host–guest complex with N‐isopropylacrylamide or N,N‐diethylacrylamide yielded copolymers showing a temperature‐controlled solubility window in water. The impact of different anionic guests and salt concentrations on solubility behavior was investigated via turbidity measurements.

In this communication, β‐cyclodextrin modified quantum dots were used as a water‐soluble “supramolecular” cross‐linker (SCL) because of its surface's supramolecular activity. The guest monomer‐loaded SCL (mSCL) can be used to copolymerize with water‐soluble monomers leading to transparent hybrid supramolecular hydrogels. This simple and versatile method opens new venues for the preparation of hybrid supramolecular hydrogels and the host–guest chemistry of cyclodextrins.

Polymerized ionic liquid (PIL) nanoparticles are for the first time applied as sole stabilizers in aqueous emulsion polymerization and reveal an astonishing and unexpected behavior. In a well‐dispersed state, the PIL nanoparticles serve as an unexpectedly effective stabilizer for polystyrene dispersions, enabling solids content of greater than 40%. However, the same PIL as dry powder is hydrophobic and, in accordance with Bancroft's rule, unable to stabilize aqueous dispersions. This ambivalent behavior of PIL is extremely beneficial for the application of aqueous dispersions because, as desired for decades, the hydrophilic dispersed state during synthesis turns hydrophobic in the dried state during application of the polymer.
