The main focus of this work is to model macroscopically the effects of partial saturation upon the permeability of dual scale fibrous media made of fiber bundles when a Newtonian viscous fluid impregnates it. A new phenomenological model is proposed to explain the discrepancies between experimental pressure results and analytical predictions based on Darcy's law. This model incorporates the essential features of relative permeability but without the necessity of measuring saturation of the liquid for its prediction. The model is very relevant for the small scale industrial systems where a liquid is forced to flow through a fibrous porous medium. It requires four parameters. Two of them are the two permeability values based on the two length scales. One length scale is of the order of magnitude of the individual fiber radius and corresponds to the permeability of the completely staurated medium, the other is of the order of magnitude of the distance between the fiber bundles and corresponds to the permeability of the partially saturated medium. The other two parameters are the lengths of the two partially saturated regions of the flow domain. The two lengths of the partially saturated region and the permeability of the fully saturated flow domain can be directly measured from the experiments. The excellent agreement between the model and the experimental results of inlet pressure profile with respect to time suggests that this model may be used to describe the variation of the permeability behind a moving front in such porous media for correct pressure prediction. It may also be used to characterize the fibrous medium by determining the two different permeabilities and the relative importance of the unsaturated portion of the flow domain for a given architecture.  相似文献

The Carman–Kozeny correlation is applied to a medium which is consolidated, highly porous and anisotropic: the expanded then compressed natural graphite. The effective textural properties (i.e. the mean pore diameter, porosity and tortuosity) have been measured by a mercury porosimeter and a heterogeneous diffusion cell. The texture and the permeability (according to the Darcy's law) measured for the two main directions of these orthotropic porous media change over a very wide range depending on their apparent mass densities. Experimental data show that only a part of the total porosity participates in the gas flow in steady state conditions.  相似文献

This article reports an experimental study of the permeability of fibrous porous media based on air flow. Two glass wools have been analyzed in three different flow directions to evaluate their anisotropic structure. The usual flow theories such as Darcy’s law, valid for granular materials, have been shown to apply also to these fibrous media which is a more complex structure (fiber arrangement, high porous media,…). The intrinsic permeabilities and the anisotropic factors have been determined from an air permeability measurement based on a standard test for industrial fabrics. The experimental results have been compared to different models, showing the limits of some simplistic models when applied to our highly porous structures. One model, Kyan’s model based on the flow around submerged objects, was, however, found to agree with our experimental data. This study also demonstrates the interesting use of an experimental technique, which is air permeability measurement (water permeability is not adapted), in the investigation of flow phenomena in a fibrous medium.  相似文献

In the present paper, multiphase flow dynamics in a porous medium are analyzed by employing the lattice-Boltzmann modeling approach. A two-dimensional formulation of a lattice-Boltzmann model, using a D2Q9 scheme, is used. Results of the FlowLab code simulation for single phase flow in porous media and for two-phase flow in a channel are compared with analytical solutions. Excellent agreement is obtained. Additionally, fluid-fluid interaction and fluid-solid interaction (wettability) are modeled and examined. Calculations are performed to simulate two-fluid dynamics in porous media, in a wide range of physical parameters of porous media and flowing fluids. It is shown that the model is capable of determining the minimum body force needed for the nonwetting fluid to percolate through the porous medium. Dependence of the force on the pore size, and geometry, as well as on the saturation of the nonwetting fluid is predicted by the model. In these simulations, the results obtained for the relative permeability coefficients indicate the validity of the reciprocity for the two coupling terms in the modified Darcy's law equations. Implication of the simulation results on two-fluid flow hydrodynamics in a decay-heated particle debris bed is discussed. Received on 1 December 1999  相似文献

This paper gives an overview on nonlinear porous flow in low permeability porous media, reveals the microscopic mechanisms of flows, and clarifies properties of porous flow fluids. It shows that, deviating from Darcy's linear law, the porous flow characteristics obey a nonlinear law in a low-permeability porous medium, and the viscosity of the porous flow fluid and the permeability values of water and oil are not constants. Based on these characters, a new porous flow model, which can better describe low permeability reservoir, is established. This model can describe various patterns of porous flow, as Darcy's linear law does. All the parameters involved in the model, having definite physical meanings, can be obtained directly from the experiments.  相似文献

In this article an experimental setup designed to assist in the characterization of complex solute transport problems in porous media is described. Glass beads representing the medium are confined in a 2-D transparent Perspex box and a water flow transports a fluorescent dye. Under suitable illumination, the dye emits visible light which is collected by a CCD camera. The image acquired by this non-invasive optical technique is processed to estimate the 2-dimensional distribution of tracer concentrations by using an appropriate calibration curve that links fluorescent intensity and solute concentration. Details about the dye choice and discussion about photobleaching are reported. An analysis of the experimental error on the concentration profile is also presented. A few recent results of a study on contaminant plume within a homogenous porous matrix constituted by glass beads having mean diameter of 1 mm or 2 mm shows the performance of constructed model.  相似文献

Foam flow experiments were carried out to study the influence factors such as surfactant concentration, foam quality, injection rate of liquid and gas, permeability of porous media, temperature, and oil saturation on blocking ability and flowing characteristics of steady foams in porous media. Foam blocking mechanisms and flowing characteristics were summarized according to the experimental results and foam migration behavior. The results showed that the pressure distribution of flowing foams was linearly descending in porous media at steady state. The results further showed that the foam size and quality in pores along the sand pack were almost uniform, that is, foam generation and destruction gradually reached dynamic equilibrium at steady state. In porous media, the blocking ability of steady foams increased with the concentration of the foaming agent and the increase in the permeability of porous media, but the blocking ability decreased with the increase in the temperature, the shearing rate, and the oil saturation of the porous media. Foam resistance factor reached maximal value at the foam quality of 85% in porous media.  相似文献

Determination of Permeability Distributions Using NMR Velocity Imaging   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study develops a methodology for determining the absolute permeability distribution in a porous media sample using velocity data obtained from NMR imaging experiments. An objective function describing the discrepancy between observed and simulated data is reduced by iteratively updating the permeability. This parameter estimation scheme is based on an iterative method which uses optimal control theory to refine the estimates. Although this theory is developed for both isotropic and anisotropic porous media, the permeability reconstructions examined in this paper are restricted to the isotropic case. Synthetic data are used to investigate the impact of varying the noise in the experimental data, the degree of parameterization, the relative weighting of the regularization term in the objective function, and the amount and type of data required to obtain a satisfactory permeability reconstruction. These synthetic data are extracted from the solution of numerical experiments that have utilized an assumed permeability distribution. The methodology is also applied to data gathered in laboratory experiments for water flow in a sandstone sample.  相似文献

In this paper we analyze the flow of a Maxwell fluid in a rigid porous medium using the method of volume averaging. We first present the local volume averaged momentum equation which contains Darcy-scale elastic effects and undetermined integrals of the spatial deviations of the pressure and velocity. A closure problem is developed in order to determine the spatial deviations and thus obtain a closed form of the momentum equation that contains a time-dependent permeability tensor. To gain some insight into the effects of elasticity on the dynamics of flow in porous media, the entire problem is transformed to the frequency domain through a temporal Fourier transform. This leads to a dynamic generalization of Darcy's law. Analytical results are provided for the case in which the porous medium is modeled as a bundle of capillary tubes, and a scheme is presented to solve the transformed closure problem for a general microstructure.  相似文献

The problem of the creeping flow through a spherical droplet with a nonhomogenous porous layer in a spherical container has been studied analytically. Darcy's model for the flow inside the porous annular region and the Stokes equation for the flow inside the spherical cavity and container are used to analyze the flow. The drag force is exerted on the porous spherical particles enclosing a cavity, and the hydrodynamic permeability of the spherical droplet with a non-homogeneous porous layer is calculated. Emphasis is placed on the spatially varying permeability of a porous medium, which is not covered in all the previous works related to spherical containers. The variation of hydrodynamic permeability and the wall effect with respect to various flow parameters are presented and discussed graphically. The streamlines are presented to discuss the kinematics of the flow. Some previous results for hydrodynamic permeability and drag forces have been verified as special limiting cases.  相似文献

We investigate the filtration law of incompressible viscous Newtonian fluids in rigid non-inertial porous media, for example, rotating porous media. The filtration law is obtained by upscaling the flow at the pore scale. We use the method of multiple scale expansions which gives rigorously the macroscopic behaviour without any prerequisite on the form of the macroscopic equations. For finite Ekman numbers the filtration law is shown to resemble a Darcy's law, but with a non-symmetric permeability tensor which depends on the angular velocity of the porous matrix. We obtain the filtration analog of the Hall effect. For large Ekman numbers the filtration law is a small correction to the classical Darcy's law. The corrector is antisymmetric. In this case we recover a structure of law which is similar to phenomenological laws introduced in the literature, but with a dissimilar effective coefficient.  相似文献

The problem of finding the potential of a translational flow through a system of circular or spherical layers in a porous medium obeying Darcy's law is considered. The permeability coefficients change stepwise across the interface. The method is based on deriving special recurrence relations which give a rational dependence of the potentials on the permeability coefficients suitable for specific calculations.  相似文献

The analysis of two-phase flow in porous media begins with the Stokes equations and an appropriate set of boundary conditions. Local volume averaging can then be used to produce the well known extension of Darcy's law for two-phase flow. In addition, a method of closure exists that can be used to predict the individual permeability tensors for each phase. For a heterogeneous porous medium, the local volume average closure problem becomes exceedingly complex and an alternate theoretical resolution of the problem is necessary. This is provided by the method of large-scale averaging which is used to average the Darcy-scale equations over a region that is large compared to the length scale of the heterogeneities. In this paper we present the derivation of the large-scale averaged continuity and momentum equations, and we develop a method of closure that can be used to predict the large-scale permeability tensors and the large-scale capillary pressure. The closure problem is limited by the principle of local mechanical equilibrium. This means that the local fluid distribution is determined by capillary pressure-saturation relations and is not constrained by the solution of an evolutionary transport equation. Special attention is given to the fact that both fluids can be trapped in regions where the saturation is equal to the irreducible saturation, in addition to being trapped in regions where the saturation is greater than the irreducible saturation. Theoretical results are given for stratified porous media and a two-dimensional model for a heterogeneous porous medium.  相似文献

A thermodynamic automaton model of fluid flow in porous media is presented. The model is a nonrelativistic version of a Lorentz invariant lattice gas model constructed by Udey et al. (1998). In the previous model it was shown that the energy momentum tensor and the relativistic Boltzman equation can be rigorously derived from the collision and propagation rules. In the present paper we demonstrate that this nonrelativistic model can be used to accurately simulate well known results involving single phase flow and diffusion in porous media. The simulation results show that (1) one-phase flow simulations in porous media are consistent with Darcy's law; (2) the apparent diffusion coefficient decreases with a decrease in permeability; (3) small scale heterogeneity does not affect diffusion significantly in the cases considered.  相似文献

Various versions of representations of the percolation Reynolds number for porous media with isotropic and anisotropic flow properties are considered. The formulas are derived and the variants are analyzed with reference to model porous media with a periodic microstructure formed by systems of capillaries and packings consisting of spheres of constant diameter (ideal and fictitious porous media, respectively). A generalization of the Kozeny formula is given for determining the capillary diameter in an ideal porous medium equivalent to a fictitious medium with respect to permeability and porosity and it is shown that the capillary diameter is nonuniquely determined. Relations for recalculating values of the Reynolds number determined by means of formulas proposed earlier are given and it is shown that taking the microstructure of porous media into account, as proposed in [1, 2], makes it possible to explain the large scatter of the numerical values of the Reynolds number in processing the experimental data.  相似文献

Classical models for flow and transport processes in porous media employ the so-called extended Darcy’s Law. Originally, it was proposed empirically for one-dimensional isothermal flow of an incompressible fluid in a rigid, homogeneous, and isotropic porous medium. Nowadays, the extended Darcy’s Law is used for highly complex situations like non-isothermal, multi-phase and multi-component flow and transport, without introducing any additional driving forces. In this work, an alternative approach by Hassanizadeh and Gray identifying additional driving forces were tested in an experimental setup for horizontal redistribution of two fluid phases with an initial saturation discontinuity. Analytical and numerical solutions based on traditional models predict that the saturation discontinuity will persist, but a uniform saturation distribution will be established in each subdomain after an infinite amount of time. The pressure field, however, is predicted to be continuous throughout the domain at all times and is expected to become uniform when there is no flow. In our experiments, we also find that the saturation discontinuity persists. But, gradients in both saturation and pressure remain in both subdomains even when the flow of fluids stops. This indicates that the identified additional driving forces present in the truly extended Darcy’s Law are potentially significant.  相似文献

Free flow channel confined by porous walls is a feature of many of the natural and industrial settings. Viscous flows adjacent to saturated porous medium occur in cross-flow and dead-end filtrations employed primarily in pharmaceutical and chemical industries for solid–liquid or gas–solid separations. Various mathematical models have been put forward to describe the conjugate flow dynamics based on theoretical grounds and experimental evidence. Despite this fact, there still exists a wide scope for extensive research in numerical solutions of these coupled models when applied to problems with industrial relevance. The present work aims towards the numerical analysis of coupled free/porous flow dynamics in the context of industrial filtration systems. The free flow dynamics has been expressed by the Stokes equations for the creeping, laminar flow regime whereas the flow behaviour in very low permeability porous media has been represented by the conventional Darcy equation. The combined free/porous fluid dynamical behaviour has been simulated using a mixed finite element formulation based on the standard Galerkin technique. A nodal replacement technique has been developed for the direct linking of Stokes and Darcy flow regimes which alleviates specification of any additional constraint at the free/porous interface. The simulated flow and pressure fields have been found for flow domains with different geometries which represent prototypes of actual industrial filtration equipment. Results have been obtained for varying values of permeability of the porous medium for generalised Newtonian fluids obeying the power law model. A series of numerical experiments has been performed in order to validate the coupled flow model. The developed model has been examined for its flexibility in dealing with complex geometrical domains and found to be generic in delivering convergent, stable and theoretically consistent results. The validity and accuracy of the simulated results has been affirmed by comparing with available experimental data.  相似文献

The permeability of a porous medium is strongly affected by its local geometry and connectivity, the size distribution of the solid inclusions, and the pores available for flow. Since direct measurements of the permeability are time consuming and require experiments that are not always possible, the reliable theoretical assessment of the permeability based on the medium structural characteristics alone is of importance. When the porosity approaches unity, the permeability?Cporosity relationships represented by the Kozeny?CCarman equations and Archie??s law predict that permeability tends to infinity and thus they yield unrealistic results if specific area of the porous media does not tend to zero. The aim of this article is the evaluation of the relationships between porosity and permeability for a set of fractal models with porosity approaching unity and a finite permeability. It is shown that the tube bundles generated by finite iterations of the corresponding geometric fractals can be used to model porous media where the permeability?Cporosity relationships are derived analytically. Several examples of the tube bundles are constructed, and the relevance of the derived permeability?Cporosity relationships is discussed in connection with the permeability measurements of highly porous metal foams reported in the literature.  相似文献
