The influence of inorganic filler TiO2 nanoparticles on the morphology and properties of polysulfone (PS) ultrafiltration membranes was investigated. PS/TiO2 composite membranes were prepared by a phase‐inversion method. TiO2 nanoparticles modified by sodium dodecyl sulfate were uniformly dispersed in an 18 wt % PS casting solution. The addition of TiO2 resulted in an increase in the pore density and porosity of the membrane skin layer. The pore size distribution changed from the log‐normal distribution to the bimodal distribution because of the presence of TiO2 nanoparticles, and some large pores were observed when the concentration of the filler was over 3 wt %. The skin layer was gradually thickened; meanwhile, the morphology sublayer changed from macrovoids to spongelike pores, in comparison with PS membranes without the filler. The addition of TiO2 also induced increases in the hydrophilicity, mechanical strength, and thermal stability. The ultrafiltration experiments showed when the concentration of TiO2 was less than 2 wt %, the permeability and rejection of the membrane was enhanced and then decreased drastically with a higher filler concentration (>3%). © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Metallocene catalyst based polyethylene‐co‐7‐octenyldimethyl phenyl silane (PE/Si? Ph ) and its post‐treated functional forms PE/Si? X ( X = Cl , F , OCH3 , OCH2CH3 ) were used as additives in PE/ATH composites. The impact strength of the composites was significantly increased after a small addition (0.5–3.0 wt %) of the functionalized form of the copolymer (PE/Si? X ). The thermal study of the composites gave us more information about the additive's behavior at the filler/matrix interphase and correlation to the mechanical properties was found. According to this thermal data, the original untreated form of PE/Si? Ph also seemed to interact weakly with the ATH‐filler particles, which was seen in an altered interphase at the filler/matrix boundary layer. The interaction was not strong enough to improve the impact strength of composites but an increase was observed in some other mechanical properties (tensile stress, yield strain). © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An acid urethane oligodimethacrylate based on poly(ethylene glycol) was synthesized and used in the preparation of hybrid composites containing silsesquioxane sequences and titania domains formed through sol‐gel reactions along with silver/gold nanoparticles (Ag/Au NPs) in situ photogenerated during the UV‐curing process. The photopolymerization kinetics studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and photoDSC showed that the photoreactivity of the investigated formulations depends on the amount of titanium butoxide (5–20 wt %) added in the system subjected to UV irradiation. The introduction of 1 wt % AgNO3/AuBr3 in formulations slightly improved the degree of conversion but diminished the polymerization rates. The formation of hybrid materials comprising predominantly amorphous TiO2/SiO2 NPs, with or without Ag/Au NPs, was confirmed through specific analyses. The evaluation of photocatalytic activity demonstrated that the synthesized hybrid films are suitable for the complete removal of organic pollutants (phenolic compounds) from water under UV irradiation (200–350 min) at low intensity (found in the solar radiation). © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Alumina/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanocomposites were synthesized by an in situ free‐radical polymerization process with 38 and 17 nm diameter γ‐alumina nanoparticles. At extremely low filler weight fractions (<1.0 wt % of 38 nm fillers or < 0.5 wt % of 17 nm fillers) the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of the nanocomposites drops by 25 °C when compared to the neat polymer. Further additions of filler (up to 10 wt %) do not lead to additional Tg reductions. The thermal behavior is shown to vary with particle size, but this dependence can be normalized with respect to a specific surface area. The nanocomposite Tg phenomenon is hypothesized to be because of nonadhering nanoparticles that serve as templates for a porous system with many internal interfaces that break up the percolating structure of dynamically heterogeneous domains recently suggested by Long, D.; and Lequeux, F. Eur Phys J E 2001, 4, 371 to be responsible for the Tg reductions in polymer ultrathin films. The results also point to a far field effect of the nanoparticle surface on the bulk matrix. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 42: 4371–4383, 2004  相似文献

Polyethylene nanocomposites containing silver nanoparticles with antimicrobial properties were produced via in situ polymerization. The silver nanoparticles were added together with the catalytic system (metallocene catalyst and methylaluminoxane, MAO, as cocatalyst) directly to the reactor. The polymerization activity did not present significant changes with the incorporation of the silver nanoparticles in comparison to the homopolymerization without filler. The effect of various silver nanoparticle contents on silver ion release and antimicrobial efficacy against Escherichia Coli were studied. Nanocomposites containing higher nanosilver concentrations (5 wt.%) showed the highest silver ion release, and after 24 h reached 99.99% of efficacy against the bacteria compared with the neat PE. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed that the nanospheres were well dispersed throughout the polyethylene matrix.  相似文献

Titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) in their two forms, anatase and rutile, were synthesized and deposited onto the surface of cotton fabrics by using ultrasonic irradiation. The structure and morphology of the nanoparticles were analyzed by using characterization methods such as XRD, TEM, STEM, and EDS. The antimicrobial activities of the TiO2–cotton composites were tested against Escherichia coli (Gram‐negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram‐positive) strains, as well as against Candida albicans. Significant antimicrobial effect was observed, mainly against Staphylococcus aureus. In addition, the combination of visible light and TiO2 NPs showed enhanced antimicrobial activity.  相似文献

In this present study, biodegradable PBAT nanocomposites containing different weight percentages (1, 3, 5, 7, and 10% w/w) of TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by using solvent casting technique, chloroform as a solvent. The microstructure and morphology of the as‐synthesized poly(butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) (PBAT)/TiO2 nanocomposite films were characterized by Fourier‐transform infrared, X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscope. The thermal degradation of PBAT composites was studied by using thermogravimetric analysis. The mechanical strength of the films was improved by increasing TiO2 concentration. Tensile strength increased from 32.60 to 63.26 MPa, respectively. Barrier properties of the PBAT/TiO2 nanocomposites were investigated by using an oxygen permeability tester. The oxygen permeability (oxygen transmission rate) decreased with increasing the TiO2 nanoparticle concentrations. The PBAT/TiO2 nanocomposite films showed profound antimicrobial activity against both Gram‐positive and Gram‐negative foodborne pathogenic bacteria, namely, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, to understand to the zone of inhibition. These results indicated that filler–polymer interaction is important and the role of the TiO2 as a reinforcement in the nanocomposites was evident. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A series of linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE) nanocomposites containing different types of nanofiller (TiO2, MWCNT, expanded graphite, and boehmite) were prepared by in situ polymerization using a tandem catalyst system composed of {TpMs}NiCl ( 1 ) and Cp2ZrCl2 ( 2 ), and analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Based on these analyses, the filler content varied from 1.30 to 1.80 wt %. The melting temperatures and degree of crystallinity of the LLDPE nanocomposites were comparable to those of neat LLDPE. The presence of MWCNT as well as boehmite nucleated the LLDPE crystallization, as indicated by the increased crystallization temperature. The DMA results showed that the presence of TiO2, EG, and CAM 9080 in the LLDPE matrix yielded nanocomposites with relatively inferior mechanical properties compared to neat LLDPE, suggesting heterogeneous distribution of these nanofillers into the polymer matrix and/or the formation of nanoparticle aggregates, which was confirmed by TEM. However, substantial improvement in the storage modulus was achieved by increasing the sonication time. The highest storage modulus was obtained using MWCNT (1.30 wt %). © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2014 , 52, 3506–3512  相似文献

A series of waterborne polyurethane (WBPU)/multiwalled carbon nanotube (CNT) and WBPU/nitric acid treated multiwalled carbon nanotube (A‐CNT) composites were prepared by in situ polymerization in an aqueous medium. The optimum nitric acid treatment time was about 0.5 h. The effects of the CNT and A‐CNT contents on the dynamic mechanical thermal properties, mechanical properties, hardness, electrical conductivity, and antistatic properties of the two kinds of composites were compared. The tensile strength and modulus, the glass‐transition temperatures of the soft and hard segments (Tgs and Tgh, respectively), and ΔTg (TghTgs) of WBPU for both composites increased with increasing CNT and A‐CNT contents. However, these properties of the WBPU/A‐CNT composites were higher than those of the WBPU/CNT composites with the same CNT content. The electrical conductivities of the WBPU/CNT1.5 and WBPU/A‐CNT1.5 composites containing 1.5 wt % CNTs (8.0 × 10−4 and 1.1 × 10−3 S/cm) were nearly 8 and 9 orders of magnitude higher than that of WBPU (2.5 × 10−12 S/cm), respectively. The half‐life of the electrostatic charge (τ1/2) values of the WBPU/CNT0.1 and WBPU/A‐CNT0.1 composites containing 0.1 wt % CNTs were below 10 s, and the composites had good antistatic properties. From these results, A‐CNT was found to be a better reinforcer than CNT. These results suggest that WBPU/A‐CNT composites prepared by in situ polymerization have high potential as new materials for waterborne coatings with good physical, antistatic, and conductive properties. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The confinement effects introduced by nanoparticles have been reported to influence the phase behaviors thus the properties of polymer nanocomposites. In this study, molecular dynamics and crystallization behaviors of polyethylene (PE) composited with three types of silica (SiO2) nanoparticles, namely unmodified SiO2, hydrophobically modified SiO2, SiO2‐APTES (3‐aminopropyltriethoxysilane) and SiO2‐PTES (n‐propyltriethoxysilane), were systematically investigated via a combination of DSC, XRD and 1H solid‐state NMR measurements. The suppressions in crystallization and chain mobilities of PE rank in the order of unmodified SiO2 < SiO2‐APTES < SiO2‐PTES due to the increasing interfacial interactions between PE and SiO2 nanoparticles. Additionally, independent of polymer–nanoparticle interactions, a silica network forms for all three kinds of nanocomposites when SiO2 content reaches 83 wt %. The mobilities of polymer chains are severely restricted by such a percolated network structure, leading to a turning point in the crystallization ability of nanocomposites and a new crystallization peak at 45 °C lower than that of pure PE. The synergetic effects of interfacial interactions and filler network on polymer crystallization have been thoroughly studied in this work, which will provide guidance on modifying and designing nanocomposites with controlled properties. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work describes the preparation and characterization of polypyrrole (PPy)/iron oxide nanocomposites fabricated from monodispersed iron oxide nanoparticles in the crystalline form of magnetite (Fe3O4) and PPy by in situ chemical oxidative polymerization. Two spherical nanoparticles of magnetite, such as 4 and 8 nm, served as cores were first dispersed in an aqueous solution with anionic surfactant sodium bis(2‐ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate to form micelle/magnetite spherical templates that avoid the aggregation of magnetite nanoparticles during the further preparation of nanocomposites. The PPy/magnetite nanocomposites were then synthesized on the surface of the spherical templates. Structural and morphological analysis showed that the fabricated PPy/magnetite nanocomposites are core (magnetite)‐shell (PPy) structures. Morphology of the PPy/magnetite nanocomposites containing monodispersed 4‐nm magnetite nanoparticles shows a remarkable change from spherical to tube‐like structures as the content of nanoparticles increases from 12 to 24 wt %. Conductivities of these PPy/magnetite nanocomposites show significant enhancements when compared with those of PPy without magnetite nanoparticles, in particular the conductivities of 36 wt % PPy/magnetite nanocomposites with 4‐nm magnetite nanoparticles are about six times in magnitude higher than those of PPy without magnetite nanocomposites. These results suggest that the tube‐like structures of 36 wt % PPy/magnetite nanocomposites may be served as conducting network to enhance the conductivity of nanocomposites. The magnetic properties of 24 and 36 wt % PPy/magnetitenanocomposites show ferromagnetic behavior and supermagnetism, respectively. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Eco-friendly all cellulose composites were developed using cellulose as matrix and nanocomposite (in situ generated copper nanoparticles modified Napier Grass Fibers (NGFs)) as fillers for the antibacterial applications. The content of the nanocomposite filler was increased from 1?wt.% to 5?wt.% in the cellulose matrix. All these composites were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Tensile, Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), and antibacterial tests. SEM-EDX analysis revealed the in situ generation of copper nanoparticles on the surface of the films. Further, all cellulose composites showed good thermal stability. A minimum of 30% increase in char residue was observed in all cellulose nanocomposites compared to matrix. Antibacterial analysis indicated an excellent clear zone formation against both Gram Negative (Escherichia coli) and Gram Positive (Staphylococcus) bacteria. Hence, all these cellulose nanocomposite films can be considered as antibacterial packaging and dressing materials in medical field.  相似文献

Polymer chains of PMMA were grown from nano titania (n‐TiO2) by the reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization process. The mechanism and kinetics of MMA polymerization from both solution and “grafted from” n‐TiO2 were studied. The RAFT agent, 4‐cyano‐4‐(dodecylsulfanylthiocarbonyl) sulfanyl pentanoic acid, with an available carboxyl group was used to anchor onto the n‐TiO2 surface, with the S?C(SC12H25) moiety used for subsequent RAFT polymerization of MMA to form n‐TiO2/PMMA nanocomposites. The functionalization of n‐TiO2 was determined by FTIR, XPS, partitioning studies, and thermal analysis. The livingness of the polymerization was verified using NMR and GPC, while the dispersion of the inorganic filler in the polymer was studied using electron microscopy, FTIR, and thermal analysis. The monomer conversion and molecular weight kinetics were explored for the living RAFT polymerization, both in solution and grafted from n‐TiO2, with first‐order kinetics being observed in both cases. Increased graft density on n‐TiO2 led to a lower rate of polymerization. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 3926–3937, 2008  相似文献

In order to enhance dielectric properties and energy storage density of poly(vinylidene fluoride‐hexafluoro propylene) (PVDF‐HFP), surface charged gas‐phase Al2O3 nanoparticles (GP‐Al2O3, with positive surface charges, ε’ ≈ 10) are selected as fillers to fabricate PVDF‐HFP‐based composites via simple physical blending and hot‐molding techniques. The results show that GP‐Al2O3 are dispersed homogeneously in the PVDF‐HFP matrix and the existence of nanoscale interface layer (matrix‐filler) is investigated by SAXS. The dielectric constant of the composites filled with 10 wt % GP‐Al2O3 is 100.5 at 1 Hz, which is 5.6 times higher than that of pure PVDF‐HFP. The maximum energy storage density of the composite is 4.06 J cm?3 at an electrical field of 900 kV mm?1 with GP‐Al2O3 content of 1 wt %. Experimental results show that GP‐Al2O3 could induce uniform fillers’ distribution and increase the concentration of electroactive β‐phase as well as enhance interfacial polarization in the matrix, which resulted in enhancements of dielectric constant and energy storage density of the PVDF‐HFP composites. This work demonstrates that surface charged inorganic‐oxide nanoparticles exhibit promising potential in fabricating ferroelectric polymer composites with relatively high dielectric constant and energy storage. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polyethylene‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (PE‐b‐PMMA) was successfully synthesized through the combination of metallocene catalysis with living radical polymerization. Terminally hydroxylated polyethylene, prepared by ethylene/allyl alcohol copolymerization with a specific zirconium metallocene/methylaluminoxane/triethylaluminum catalyst system, was treated with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide to produce terminally esterified polyethylene (PE‐Br). With the resulting PE‐Br as an initiator for transition‐metal‐mediated living radical polymerization, methyl methacrylate polymerization was subsequently performed with CuBr or RuCl2(PPh3)3 as a catalyst. Then, PE‐b‐PMMA block copolymers of different poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) contents were prepared. Transmission electron microscopy of the obtained block copolymers revealed unique morphological features that depended on the content of the PMMA segment. The block copolymer possessing 75 wt % PMMA contained 50–100‐nm spherical polyethylene lamellae uniformly dispersed in the PMMA matrix. Moreover, the PE‐b‐PMMA block copolymers effectively compatibilized homopolyethylene and homo‐PMMA at a nanometer level. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(dimethylsiloxane) networks were prepared by tetrafunctionally end‐linking hydroxyl‐terminated chains with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). Molecular composites were then prepared by in situ sol–gel reactions on additional TEOS swelled into the networks, resulting in the formation of reinforcing silica fillers within the host elastomers. The amount of filler generated generally increased linearly with an increase in the TEOS swelling ratio, as expected. The silica particles formed were examined by small‐angle X‐ray scattering. Of particular interest were the relationships between particle size and molecular weight Mc of the network chains (mesh sizes), amount of filler introduced, and catalyst concentration. Particle sizes were smallest for the smallest values of Mc, possibly demonstrating constraining effects from the very short network chains. At fixed Mc and filler concentrations, higher catalyst concentrations gave larger particles. Increase in filler concentration generally had little effect on particle size at low and high loadings, but markedly increased sizes at intermediate levels (10–20 wt %), presumably caused by coalescence of the scattering entities into considerably larger aggregates. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this study, poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐chlorotrifluoroethylene)‐graft‐poly(oxyethylene methacrylate), P(VDF‐co‐CTFE)‐g‐POEM, an amphiphilic comb copolymer with hydrophobic P(VDF‐co‐CTFE) backbone and hydrophilic POEM side chains at 73:27 wt % was synthesized. The POEM side chains were grafted from the P(VDF‐co‐CTFE) mainchain backbone via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using direct initiation of the chlorine atoms in CTFE units. Synthesis of microphase‐separated P(VDF‐co‐CTFE)‐g‐POEM comb copolymer was successful, as confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), FTIR spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Nanocomposite films were prepared using the comb copolymer as a template film and the in situ reduction of AgCF3SO3 precursor to silver nanoparticles under UV irradiation. Silver nanoparticles with 4–8 nm in average size were in situ created in the solid state template film, as revealed by TEM, UV–visible spectroscopy, and wide angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) presented the selective incorporation and the in situ growth of silver nanoparticles within the hydrophilic POEM domains of microphase‐separated comb copolymer film. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nanocomposites based on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and expanded graphite (EG) have been prepared by in situ polymerization. Morphology of the nanocomposites has been examined by electronic microscopy. The relationship between the preparation method, morphology, and electrical conductivity was studied. Electronic microscopy images reveal that the nanocomposites exhibit well dispersed graphene platelets. The incorporation of EG to the PET results in a sharp insulator‐to‐conductor transition with a percolation threshold (?c) as low as 0.05 wt %. An electrical conductivity of 10?3 S/cm was achieved for 0.4 wt % of EG. The low percolation threshold and relatively high electrical conductivity are attributed to the high aspect ratio, large surface area, and uniform dispersion of the EG sheets in PET matrix. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study was focused on the photocatalytic activity of polyaniline (Pani)/iron doped titanium dioxide (Fe–TiO2) composites for the degradation of methylene blue as a model dye. TiO2 nanoparticles were doped with iron ions (Fe) using the wet impregnation method and the doped nanoparticles were further combined with Pani via an in situ polymerization method. For comparison purposes, Pani composites were also synthesized in the presence undoped TiO2. The photocatalyst and the composites were characterized by standard analytical techniques such as FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDX and UV–Vis spectroscopies. Fe–TiO2 and its composites exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity under ultraviolet light irradiation. Improved photocatalytic activity of Fe–TiO2 was attributed to the dopant Fe ions hindering the recombination of the photoinduced charge carriers. Pani/Fe–TiO2 composite with 30?wt.% of TiO2 nanoparticles achieved 28% dye removal and the discoloration rate of methylene blue for the sample was 0.0025?min?1. FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDX and UV–Vis spectroscopies supported the idea that Fe ions integrated into TiO2 crystal structure and Pani composites were successfully synthesized in the presence of the photocatalyst nanoparticles. The novelty of this study was to investigate the photocatalytic activity of Pani composites, containing iron doped TiO2 and to compare their results with that of Pani/TiO2.  相似文献

To control the interfacial interaction in magnetic metal nanoparticles‐filled polymer composites, surfaces of iron, cobalt, and nickel nanoparticles were grafted by irradiation‐induced polymerization. On the basis of the study of dynamical mechanical behavior, thermal stability, and magnetic performance of the composites prepared by either solution mixing or in situ polymerization, the structure–property relationships of the composites are a function of interfacial interaction and the dispersion state of the nanoparticles. In addition, grafting of polymers onto the surface of the metal nanoparticles changed the surface magnetic state, leading to the possibility of purposely tailoring the magnetic behavior of the composites. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
