Purpose

To compare the image quality of three techniques and diagnostic performance in detecting implant rupture.

Materials and Methods

The study included 161 implants for the evaluation of image quality, composed of water-saturated short TI inversion recovery (herein called “water-sat STIR”), three-point Dixon techniques (herein called “Dixon”), and short TI inversion recovery fast spin-echo with iterative decomposition of silicone and water using least-squares approximation (herein called “STIR IDEAL”) and included 41 implants for the evaluation of diagnostic performance in detecting rupture, composed of water-sat STIR and STIR IDEAL.Six image quality categories were evaluated and three classifications were used: normal implant, possible rupture, and definite rupture.

Results

Statistically significant differences were noted for the image quality categories (p < 0.001). STIR IDEAL was superior or equal to water-sat STIR in all image quality categories except artifact effects and superior to Dixon in all categories. Water-sat STIR performed the poorest for water suppression uniformity. The sensitivity and specificity in detecting implant rupture of STIR-IDEAL were 81.8 % and 77.8 % and the difference between two techniques was not statistically significant.

Conclusion

STIR-IDEAL is a useful silicone-specific imaging technique demonstrating more robust water suppression and equivalent diagnostic accuracy for detecting implant rupture, than water-sat STIR, at the cost of longer scan time and an increase in minor motion artifacts.  相似文献

Purpose

To investigate the influence of dual-source parallel radiofrequency (RF) excitation on clinical breast MR images.

Methods

A 3 T MR system with both dual-source and conventional single-source RF excitations was used to examine 22 patients. Axial TSE-T2WI with fat suppression, TSE-T1WI without fat suppression, THRIVE (3D field echo) and DWI (SE-EPI) were obtained by using both excitation techniques. Image homogeneity, image contrast and lesion conspicuity were measured or independently scored by two radiologists and were compared by paired-sample t test or Wilcoxon test.

Results

Both excitations revealed 24 lesions. For SE sequences using dual-source mode, image homogeneity was improved (P = 0.00), scan time was reduced, and ghost artifacts on DWI were significantly reduced (P = 0.00). However, image contrast was not increased and lesion conspicuity had no significant difference between two modes, except DWI on which lesion conspicuity was significantly improved (P = 0.00), due to less ghost artifacts. For field-echo sequence, image homogeneity, acquisition time, image contrast and lesion conspicuity had no significant difference between the two modes.

Conclusions

Dual-source parallel RF transmission has some added value for improving breast image quality. However, its value is limited in terms of improving lesion detection and characterization.  相似文献

Purpose

Evaluate feasibility of using time-resolved and high-resolution, contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) at 7 T for characterization of an animal model of pulmonary embolism.

Methods

MRAs were performed in five rabbits using a 7-T MR scanner. Preceding the MR studies, each rabbit underwent a pulmonary artery catheterization with balloon placement. Two doses of gadodiamide were injected: first during a time-resolved MRA, immediately followed by a high-resolution acquisition. Balloon was then deflated, permitting reperfusion for 5 min. A second dose was then injected and another high-resolution MRA acquired. Measurements of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and vessel cross-sections down to fourth-order branches were made, among other parameters.

Results

Occlusion was detected in all rabbits. Despite a TE of 0.58 ms for the time-resolved MRA, regions of nonuniform enhancement attributed to susceptibility effects at the 7-T field were observed in perfused lung. Mean SNR=7.5±3.3 and 134.2±46.5 for the lung and aorta, respectively, and mean CNR=126.7±46.4 for aorta versus lung were obtained. Diameters of vessels in lung that was never occluded were not statistically different from those in reperfused lung.

Conclusion

Results show that time-resolved and high-resolution MRA of the lung are feasible at 7 T and provide high SNR, CNR and resolution, but TEs smaller than 0.58 ms are required to avoid susceptibility artifacts in time-resolved MRAs.  相似文献

Objectives

To investigate and optimize diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) acquisitions for pancreatic cancer at 3.0 T.

Methods

Forty-five patients with pancreatic cancer were examined by four DWI acquisitions with b values = 0 and 600 s/mm2 at 3.0 T, including breath-holding DWI (BH-DWI), respiratory-triggered DWI (TRIG-DWI), respiratory-triggered DWI with inversion–recovery technique (TRIGIR-DWI), and free-breathing DWI with inversion–recovery technique (FBIR-DWI). Artifacts, contrast ratio (CR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) of pancreatic cancer were statistically compared among DWI acquisitions.

Results

TRIGIR-DWI displayed the lowest artifacts and highest CR compared to other DWI acquisitions. CNRs of pancreatic cancer in TRIG-DWI and TRIGIR-DWI were statistically higher than that in FBIR-DWI and BH-DWI. Different ADCs between pancreatic cancer and noncancerous pancreatic tissues were noticed by a paired-samples T test in TRIG-DWI (p = 0.017), TRIGIR-DWI (p = 0.00001) and FBIR-DWI (p = 0.000041).

Conclusions

TRIGIR-DWI may be the optimal acquisition of DWI for pancreatic cancer at 3.0 T.  相似文献

Purpose

We evaluated the ability of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) to detect bone metastasis by comparing the results obtained using this modality with those obtained using 11C-methionine (MET) positron emission tomography (PET) and bone scintigraphy.

Materials and methods

This retrospective study involved 29 patients with bone metastasis. DWI was obtained using a single-shot echo planar imaging (EPI) sequence with fat suppression using a short inversion time inversion recovery sequence. The detection capabilities of DWI for bone metastases were compared with those of whole body MET PET (in 19 patients) and 99mTc-methylene diphosphonate bone scintigraphy (in 15 patients).

Results

Among the 19 patients who were diagnosed using DWI and PET, the PET identified 39 bone metastases, while the DWI identified 60 metastases out of 69 metastases revealed with conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Among the 15 patients who were diagnosed using DWI and bone scintigraphy, the bone scintigraphy identified 18 bone metastases, while the DWI identified 72 metastases out of 78 metastases revealed with conventional MRI. The overall bone metastasis detection rates were 56.5% for PET, 23.1% for bone scintigraphy and 92.3% for DWI.

Conclusion

DWI is a very sensitive method for detecting bone metastasis and is superior to MET PET and bone scintigraphy in terms of its detection capabilities.  相似文献

Objective

In general, low-field MRI scanners such as the 0.5- and 1-T ones produce images that are poor in quality. The motivation of this study was to lessen the noise and enhance the signal such that the image quality is improved. Here, we propose a new approach using stochastic resonance (SR)-based transform in Fourier space for the enhancement of magnetic resonance images of brain lesions, by utilizing an optimized level of Gaussian fluctuation that maximizes signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

Materials and Methods

We acquired the T1-weighted MR image of the brain in DICOM format. We processed the original MR image using the proposed SR procedure. We then tested our approach on about 60 patients of different age groups with different lesions, such as arteriovenous malformation, benign lesion and malignant tumor, and illustrated the image enhancement by using just-noticeable difference visually as well as by utilizing the relative enhancement factor quantitatively.

Results

Our method can restore the original image from noisy image and optimally enhance the edges or boundaries of the tissues, clarify indistinct structural brain lesions without producing ringing artifacts, as well as delineate the edematous area, active tumor zone, lesion heterogeneity or morphology, and vascular abnormality. The proposed technique improves the enhancement factor better than the conventional techniques like the Wiener- and wavelet-based procedures.

Conclusions

The proposed method can readily enhance the image fusing a unique constructive interaction of noise and signal, and enables improved diagnosis over conventional methods. The approach well illustrates the novel potential of using a small amount of Gaussian noise to improve the image quality.  相似文献

Purpose

To compare diffusion weighted imaging with background suppression (DWIBS) sequence with classic spectral diffusion sequence (DWI) with and without respiratory gating in mediastinal lymph node analysis at 3 T.

Materials and methods

26 patients scheduled for mediastinoscopic lymph node analysis, prospectively undergone a thoracic 3 T MRI with DWIBS (FatSat = STIR; TR/TE = 6674.1/44.7 ms; IR = 260 ms) and DWI sequences (FatSat = SPIR; TR/TE = 1291/59.6 ms) (b = 0-400-800 s/mm2) with and without (free breathing) respiratory gating.Images at b = 800 were analyzed by two radiologists. They performed qualitative analysis of fat-sat homogeneity and motion artifacts, rated from 0 to 4, and quantitative evaluation by studying signal to background (STB) of lymph nodes.

Results

Quality of fat suppression was significantly higher for DWIBS than for DWI both for free-breathing (score 3.48 ± 0.65 vs. 1.76 ± 0.96, p < 0.0001) and respiratory-gated scans (3.17 ± 0.77 vs. 1.72 ± 0.73, p = 0.0001). Similarly, artifacts were reduced with DWIBS (3.16 ± 0.47 vs. 1.76 ± 0.59, p < 0.0001; 3.0 ± 0.73 vs. 2.04 ± 0.53, p = 0.0001). Quantitative analysis showed higher STB with DWIBS (3.26 ± 1.83 vs. 0.98 ± 0.44, p < 0.0001; 3.56 ±, 2.09 vs. 0.92 ± 0.59, p < 0.0001). Gating did not improve image quality and STB on DWIBS (p > 0.05).

Conclusion

In thoracic MRI, ungated DWIBS sequence improves fat-sat homogeneity, reduces motion artifacts and increases STB of lymph nodes. Respiratory gating does not improve DWIBS image quality.  相似文献

Purpose

Most objective image quality metrics average over a wide range of image degradations. However, human clinicians demonstrate bias toward different types of artifacts. Here, we aim to create a perceptual difference model based on Case-PDM that mimics the preference of human observers toward different artifacts.

Method

We measured artifact disturbance to observers and calibrated the novel perceptual difference model (PDM). To tune the new model, which we call Artifact-PDM, degradations were synthetically added to three healthy brain MR data sets. Four types of artifacts (noise, blur, aliasing or “oil painting” which shows up as flattened, over-smoothened regions) of standard compressed sensing (CS) reconstruction, within a reasonable range of artifact severity, as measured by both PDM and visual inspection, were considered. After the model parameters were tuned by each synthetic image, we used a functional measurement theory pair-comparison experiment to measure the disturbance of each artifact to human observers and determine the weights of each artifact's PDM score. To validate Artifact-PDM, human ratings obtained from a Double Stimulus Continuous Quality Scale experiment were compared to the model for noise, blur, aliasing, oil painting and overall qualities using a large set of CS-reconstructed MR images of varying quality. Finally, we used this new approach to compare CS to GRAPPA, a parallel MRI reconstruction algorithm.

Results

We found that, for the same Artifact-PDM score, the human observer found incoherent aliasing to be the most disturbing and noise the least. Artifact-PDM results were highly correlated to human observers in both experiments. Optimized CS reconstruction quality compared favorably to GRAPPA's for the same sampling ratio.

Conclusions

We conclude our novel metric can faithfully represent human observer artifact evaluation and can be useful in evaluating CS and GRAPPA reconstruction algorithms, especially in studying artifact trade-offs.  相似文献

Purpose

To optimize the navigator-gating technique for the acquisition of high-quality three-dimensional spoiled gradient-recalled echo (3D SPGR) images of the liver during free breathing.

Materials and methods

Ten healthy volunteers underwent 3D SPGR magnetic resonance imaging of the liver using a conventional navigator-gated 3D SPGR (cNAV-3D-SPGR) sequence or an enhanced navigator-gated 3D SPGR (eNAV-3D-SPGR) sequence. No exogenous contrast agent was used. A 20-ms wait period was inserted between the 3D SPGR acquisition component and navigator component of the eNAV-3D-SPGR sequence to allow T1 recovery. Visual evaluation and calculation of the signal-to-noise ratio were performed to compare image quality between the imaging techniques.

Result

The eNAV-3D-SPGR sequence provided better noise properties than the cNAV-3D-SPGR sequence visually and quantitatively. Navigator gating with an acceptance window of 2 mm effectively inhibited respiratory motion artifacts. The widening of the window to 6 mm shortened the acquisition time but increased motion artifacts, resulting in degradation of overall image quality. Neither slice tracking nor incorporation of short breath holding successfully compensated for the widening of the window.

Conclusion

The eNAV-3D-SPGR sequence with an acceptance window of 2 mm provides high-quality 3D SPGR images of the liver.  相似文献

Purpose

To investigate the feasibility of combining GESFIDE with PROPELLER sampling approaches for simultaneous abdominal R2 and R2* mapping.

Materials and Methods

R2 and R2* measurements were performed in 9 healthy volunteers and phantoms using the GESFIDE-PROPELLER and the conventional Cartesian-sampling GESFIDE approaches.

Results

Images acquired with the GESFIDE-PROPELLER sequence effectively mitigated the respiratory motion artifacts, which were clearly evident in the images acquired using the conventional GESFIDE approach. There was no significant difference between GESFIDE-PROPELLER and reference MGRE R2* measurements (p = 0.162) whereas the Cartesian-sampling based GESFIDE methods significantly overestimated R2* values compared to MGRE measurements (p < 0.001).

Conclusion

The GESFIDE-PROPELLER sequence provided high quality images and accurate abdominal R2 and R2* maps while avoiding the motion artifacts common to the conventional Cartesian-sampling GESFIDE approaches.  相似文献

Objective

To evaluate the image findings of focal fat deposition (FFD) in the liver on gadobenate dimeglumine (Gd-BOPTA)- and gadoxetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA)-enhanced MRI, particularly during the hepatobiliary phase (HBP), and the relationship between relative enhancement (RE) and fat signal fraction (FSF) of FFD.

Subjects and Methods

Twenty-one patients with 27 FFDs (mean diameter, 21.9 mm), which showed low signal intensity on opposed-phase compared with in-phase MRI, were retrospectively evaluated. RE of the liver (REliver) and FFD (REFFD) and liver-to-lesion contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of FFD were measured on dynamic phases and HBP images with fat-saturated in-phase gradient-echo sequence. The FSF of each FFD was measured on in- and opposed-phase dual gradient-echo images. We qualitatively analyzed imaging findings of FFDs, including signal intensity, shape, margin, and homogeneity on HBP images, and enhancement pattern during dynamic phases. The correlations between REFFD and FSF and between CNR and FSF on HBP images were evaluated using Pearson’s correlation tests and a simple linear regression model.

Results

There were no significant differences between REFFD and REliver in dynamic phases and HBP, regardless of contrast agents (p ≥ 0.075). On HBP images, CNR (p = 0.008) but not REFFD (p = 0.122) was significantly correlated with FSF of FFDs (mean FSF, 19%). On HBP images, 21 of the 27 (77.8%) FFDs were hypointense, and 17 (63%) were homogeneous. Of the 21 hypointense FFDs, 12 (57.1%) had an ovoid shape and 11 (52.4%) were well margined. Although the 27 FFDs showed various enhancement patterns, 17 (63%) showed no enhancement.

Conclusion

Most FFDs appeared as hypointense lesions on Gd-BOPTA- and Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI during HBP, with various enhancement patterns during dynamic contrast-enhanced phases. REFFD on HBP images was not significantly correlated with FSF of low grade FFDs.  相似文献

Purpose

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the conspicuity of bone metastases on each of the numerous sequences produced by fast Dixon-based multisequence whole-body (WB) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning in order to determine the most clinically useful sequences overall and per anatomic region.

Materials and Methods

Twenty-seven breast cancer patients with bone metastases were prospectively studied with fast Dixon-based WB MRI including head/neck, chest, abdominal, pelvic, thigh, calf/feet and either cervical, thoracic and lumbar or cervical/thoracic and thoracic/lumbar regions. Sequences included coronal T2, axial T1 without and with intravenous gadolinium (+ C), sagittal T1 spine + C, each associated fat-only (FO) and fat-saturated (FS) sequence, axial diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and short tau inversion recovery (STIR). Blinded reviewers evaluated lesion conspicuity, a surrogate of clinical utility, on a five-point scale per anatomic region. Sequences were compared using analysis of variance, differences were detected with Tukey's honestly significant difference test, and the four sequences with highest mean conspicuity were compared to the remainder overall and per anatomic region.

Results

Overall, a significant lesion conspicuity difference was found (P < .0001), and lesion conspicuity was significantly higher on FS T1 + C, FO T1 + C, T1 + C sagittal and FS T1 + C axial sequences (P < .0001). Per-region results were the same in the head/neck. Other sequences overlapped with these and included the following: chest/abdomen — FO T2, DWI; pelvis — DWI, FO T2; thigh — FS T2, FO T2, FO T1 + C; calf/feet — FS T2, DWI, FO T2, STIR.

Conclusion

Overall, bone lesions were most conspicuous on FS T1 + C sagittal, FO T1 + C sagittal, T1 + C sagittal and FS T1 + C axial fast Dixon WB MRI sequences.  相似文献

Purpose

To test a magnetic resonance image (MRI) technique that uses an additional pulse in multi-echo T2* sequence that works to suppress the fat signal, in subjects with liver iron overload and concomitant presence of fat in the liver, which have been revealed as a major drawback that compromises the correct iron quantification by MRI.

Materials and Methods

Fifty magnetic resonance images of the liver (1.5 T scanner) of individuals with blood ferritin increases were retrospectively reviewed for the presence of steatosis, using the sequence in and out of phase, and iron overloading, using two sequences T2 * multi-echo: one standard and other with additional fat suppression pulse. T2 * values and their standard deviations were analyzed statistically.

Results

Our results showed that a significantly lower standard deviation of T2* values is obtained when the fat saturation pulse is applied in patients with steatosis. We found that modulation of fat signal on liver iron overload resulted in a different categorization of some patients. In one case, the patient was re-classified within normal levels of liver iron.

Conclusion

Our findings may contribute to a better measure of liver iron overload with relevant implications for patient treatment and care.  相似文献

Purpose

Greater spatial resolution in intracranial three-dimensional time-of-flight (TOF) magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is possible at higher field strengths, due to the increased contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) from the higher signal-to-noise ratio and the improved background suppression. However, at very high fields, spatial resolution is limited in practice by the acquisition time required for sequential phase encoding. In this study, we applied parallel imaging to 7T TOF MRA studies of normal volunteers and patients with vascular disease, in order to obtain very high resolution (0.12 mm3) images within a reasonable scan time.

Materials and Methods

Custom parallel imaging acquisition and reconstruction methods were developed for 7T MRA, based on generalized autocalibrating partially parallel acquisition (GRAPPA). The techniques were compared and applied to studies of seven normal volunteers and three patients with cerebrovascular disease.

Results

The technique produced high resolution studies free from discernible reconstruction artifacts in all subjects and provided excellent depiction of vascular pathology in patients.

Conclusions

7T TOF MRA with parallel imaging is a valuable noninvasive angiographic technique that can attain very high spatial resolution.  相似文献

Purpose

To investigate the image quality and detection rate of focal liver lesions by comparing a T2-weighted breath-hold single-shot sequence and a T2-weighted high spatial resolution fast spin-echo sequence with respiratory triggering via unenhanced and superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO)-enhanced liver imaging.

Materials and Methods

The study was approved by the local ethical review board; informed consent was waived. Liver-lesion contrast was measured and a qualitative consensus evaluation of image quality and lesion detection was performed in 42 consecutive patients using a 1.5-T MR system.

Results

The liver-lesion contrast was significantly higher (P<.05) for the respiratory-triggered sequence compared to the breath-hold sequence regarding unenhanced and SPIO-enhanced imaging. The respiratory-triggered sequences revealed significantly higher image quality scores as well as higher numbers of detected liver lesions compared to the breath-hold sequence on unenhanced and SPIO-enhanced imaging. The SPIO contrast did not significantly improve the number of detected lesions on the respective sequences (P>.05).

Conclusion

We find that respiratory-triggered fast spin-echo sequences produce a higher image quality and a more precise liver-lesion detection rate thereby justifying the increased acquisition time necessary for this method.  相似文献

Purpose

This study was done to test a series of MR sequences for evaluating the sciatic nerve after total hip arthroplasty (THA).

Material and Methods

The study protocol was approved by the institutional review board. Informed consent was obtained from all patients. Twenty-five patients (11 men and 14 women mean age: 62.3±5.7 years) with THA were included in this prospective study. MRI protocol included sequences that were preliminarily tailored for nerve imaging in patients with THA: proton density (PD)-weighted turbo SE, T1-weighted turbo SE (TSE) 3 mm thickness, T1-weighted turbo SE (TSE) 6 mm thickness, T1-weighted turbo SE with high bandwidth (TSE hBW), T2- weighted TSE, T2-weighted with fat saturation and short-tau inversion recovery (STIR). For each sequence, we evaluated the visibility of the sciatic nerve using a semiquantitative score (0=total masking; 1=insufficient visibility; 2=sufficient visibility; 3=optimal visibility). The sum of the scores given to each sequence was divided by the maximal sum, obtaining a percentage visibility index. Friedman and sign tests were used for statistical analysis.

Results

MR examination time was approximately 40 min. No patients reported pain, heat or symptoms related to nerve stimulation. The visibility index ranged between 88% and 70% for the first four sequences. The T1-weighted TSE hBW sequence had the best visibility index (P<.05). The visibility indexes of the first four sequences were significantly higher (P<.004, sign test) than those of the remaining three sequences.

Conclusion

The sciatic nerve could be studied at 1.5 T in patients following THA. The nerve is better visualized with T1-weighted TSE hBW sequences. On T2-weighted sequences and STIR, the visibility of the nerve is low.  相似文献

Objectives

The purpose of this study was to (a) investigate the image quality of phase-sensitive dual-inversion recovery (PS-DIR) coronary wall imaging in healthy subjects and in subjects with known coronary artery disease (CAD) and to (b) investigate the utilization of PS-DIR at 3 T in the assessment of coronary artery thickening in subjects with asymptomatic but variable degrees of CAD.

Materials and Methods

A total of 37 subjects participated in this institutional review board-approved and HIPAA-compliant study. These included 21 subjects with known CAD as identified on multidetector computed tomography angiography (MDCT). Sixteen healthy subjects without known history of CAD were included. All subjects were scanned using free-breathing PS-DIR magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the assessment of coronary wall thickness at 3 T. Lumen–tissue contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and quantitative vessel parameters including lumen area and wall thickness were measured. Statistical analyses were performed.

Results

PS-DIR was successfully completed in 76% of patients and in 88% of the healthy subjects. Phase-sensitive signed-magnitude reconstruction, compared to modulus-magnitude images, significantly improved lumen–tissue CNR in healthy subjects (26.73 ± 11.95 vs. 14.65 ± 9.57, P < .001) and in patients (21.45 ± 7.61 vs. 16.65 ± 5.85, P < .001). There was no difference in image CNR and SNR between groups. In arterial segments free of plaques, coronary wall was thicker in patients in comparison to healthy subjects (1.74 ± 0.27 mm vs. 1.17 ± 0.14 mm, P < .001), without a change in lumen area (4.51 ± 2.42 mm2 vs. 5.71 ± 3.11 mm2, P = .25).

Conclusions

This is the first study to demonstrate the feasibility of successfully obtaining vessel wall images at 3 T using PS-DIR in asymptomatic patients with known variable degrees of CAD as detected by MDCT. This was achieved with a fixed subject-invariant planning of blood signal nulling. With that limitation alleviated, PS-DIR coronary wall MRI is capable of detecting arterial thickening and positive arterial remodeling at 3 T in asymptomatic CAD.  相似文献

Purpose

To evaluate MRI artifacts at 3-Tesla for 38 commonly used cosmetics.

Materials and Methods

Thirty-eight cosmetics (16, nail polishes; 5, eyeliners; 3, mascaras; 10, eye shadows; 1, lip gloss; 1, body lotion; 1, body glitter, and 1, hair loss concealer) underwent evaluation for MRI artifacts at 3-Tesla. The cosmetics were applied a copper-sulfate-filled, phantom and initially assessed using a “screening” gradient echo (GRE) pulse sequence. Of the 38 different cosmetics, 14 (37%) exhibited artifacts. For these 14 cosmetics, additional characterization of artifacts was performed using a GRE pulse sequence. A qualitative scale was applied to characterize the artifact size.

Results

Artifacts were observed, as follows: 2, nail polishes; 5, eyeliners; 3, mascaras; 3, eye shadows; 1, hair loss concealer. Artifact size ranged from small (eye shadow) to very large (hair loss concealer) and tended to be associated with the presence of iron oxide or other metal-based ingredient.

Conclusions

Commonly used cosmetics caused artifacts that may create issues if the area of interest is the same as where the cosmetic was applied or if its presence was unknown, thus, potentially causing it to be construed as pathology. Therefore, these findings have important implications for patients referred for MRI examinations.  相似文献

Purposes

To evaluate the diagnostic value of diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) and combination of conventional MRI and DWI to predict metastatic axillary lymph nodes in breast cancer.

Materials and methods

Two hundred fifty-two breast cancer patients with 253 axillae were included. The morphological parameters on axial T2-weighted images without fat saturation and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values were retrospectively analyzed. An independent t-test/chi-square test and receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis were used.

Results

On conventional MRI, short and long axis length, maximal cortical thickness, relative T2 value, loss of fatty hilum (p < 0.001 for each), and eccentric cortical thickening (p < 0.003) were statistically significantly different between the metastatic and nonmetastatic groups. The short axis to long axis ratio was not a statistically significant parameter. The ADC value was significantly different between the 2 groups, with an AUC that was higher than that of conventional MR parameters (AUC, 0.815; threshold, ≤ 0.986 × 10–3 mm2/sec; sensitivity, 75.8%; specificity, 83.9%). Using the adopted thresholds for each parameter, a total number of findings suggesting malignancy of 4 or higher was determined as the threshold, with high specificity (90.1%).

Conclusion

Using conventional MRI and DWI, we can evaluate the axilla in breast cancer with high specificity.  相似文献

Objective

The objective was to evaluate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) issues (magnetic field interactions, heating, artifacts and functional alterations) at 1.5 T and 3 T for the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis (Second Sight Medical Products, Sylmar, CA, USA).

Materials and Methods

Standardized protocols were used to assess magnetic field interactions (translational attraction and torque; 3 T, worst case), MRI-related heating (1.5 and 3 T), artifacts (3 T; worst case) and functional changes (1.5 and 3 T) associated with MRI.

Results

The magnetic field interactions were acceptable. MRI-related heating, which was studied at a relatively high, MR system-reported whole body averaged specific absorption rates, will not pose a hazard to the patient under the conditions used for testing. While artifacts were “moderate” in relation to the dimensions of the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis, optimization of MRI parameters can reduce the size of the artifacts. Exposures to MRI conditions at 1.5 and 3 T did not damage or alter the functional aspects of the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis.

Conclusions

In consideration of the test results, a patient with the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis may undergo MRI at 1.5 T or 3 T when specific guidelines and MRI conditions are followed, including those advised by the manufacturer.  相似文献
