A highly active FeSe2 electrocatalyst for durable overall water splitting was prepared from a molecular 2Fe‐2Se precursor. The as‐synthesized FeSe2 was electrophoretically deposited on nickel foam and applied to the oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER and HER, respectively) in alkaline media. When used as an oxygen‐evolution electrode, a low 245 mV overpotential was achieved at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, representing outstanding catalytic activity and stability because of Fe(OH)2/FeOOH active sites formed at the surface of FeSe2. Remarkably, the system is also favorable for the HER. Moreover, an overall water‐splitting setup was fabricated using a two‐electrode cell, which displayed a low cell voltage and high stability. In summary, the first iron selenide material is reported that can be used as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for the OER and HER, as well as overall water splitting.  相似文献

Bifunctional electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline electrolyte may improve the efficiency of overall water splitting. Nickel cobaltite (NiCo2O4) has been considered a promising electrode material for the OER. However, NiCo2O4 that can be used as an electrocatalyst in HER has not been studied yet. Herein, we report self‐assembled hierarchical NiCo2O4 hollow microcuboids for overall water splitting including both the HER and OER reactions. The NiCo2O4 electrode shows excellent activity toward overall water splitting, with 10 mA cm?2 water‐splitting current reached by applying just 1.65 V and 20 mA cm?2 by applying just 1.74 V across the two electrodes. The synthesis of NiCo2O4 microflowers confirms the importance of structural features for high‐performance overall water splitting.  相似文献

Earth-abundant transition metal-based catalysts have been extensively investigated for their applicability in water electrolysers to enable overall water splitting to produce clean hydrogen and oxygen. In this study a Fe−Co based catalyst is electrodeposited in 30 seconds under vigorous hydrogen evolution conditions to produce a high surface area material that is active for both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This catalyst can achieve high current densities of 600 mAcm−2 at an applied potential of 1.6 V (vs RHE) in 1 M NaOH with a Tafel slope value of 48 mV dec−1 for the OER. In addition, the HER can be facilitated at current densities as high as 400 mA cm−2 due to the large surface area of the material. The materials were found to be predominantly amorphous but did contain crystalline regions of CoFe2O4 which became more evident after the OER indicating interesting compositional and structural changes that occur to the catalyst after an electrocatalytic reaction. This rapid method of creating a bimetallic oxide electrode for both the HER and OER could possibly be adopted to other bimetallic oxide systems suitable for electrochemical water splitting.  相似文献

Besides their use in fuel cells for energy conversion through the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), carbon‐based metal‐free catalysts have also been demonstrated to be promising alternatives to noble‐metal/metal oxide catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in metal–air batteries for energy storage and for the splitting of water to produce hydrogen fuels through the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This Review focuses on recent progress in the development of carbon‐based metal‐free catalysts for the OER and HER, along with challenges and perspectives in the emerging field of metal‐free electrocatalysis.  相似文献

A core‐shell structure with CuO core and carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and carbon hollow nanospheres (CHNS) shell was prepared through facile in‐situ hydrothermal process. The composite was used for non‐enzymatic hydrogen peroxide sensing and electrochemical overall water splitting. The core‐shell structure was established from the transmission electron microscopy image analysis. Raman and UV‐Vis spectroscopy analysis confirmed the interaction between CuO and CQDs. The electrochemical studies showed the limit of detection and sensitivity of the prepared composite as 2.4 nM and 56.72 μA μM?1 cm?2, respectively. The core‐shell structure facilitated better charge transportation which in turn exhibited elevated electro‐catalysis towards hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and overall water splitting. The overpotential of 159 mV was required to achieve 10 mA cm?2 current density for HER and an overpotential of 322 mV was required to achieve 10 mA cm?2 current density for OER in 1.0 M KOH. A two‐electrode system was constructed for overall water splitting reaction, which showed 10 and 50 mA cm?2 current density at 1.83 and 1.96 V, respectively. The prepared CuO@CQDs@CHNS catalyst demonstrated excellent robustness in HER and OER catalyzing condition along with overall water splitting reaction. Therefore, the CuO@CQDs@CHNS could be considered as promising electro‐catalyst for H2O2 sensing, HER, OER and overall water splitting.  相似文献

The development of highly efficient non-precious metal catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is key for large-scale hydrogen evolution through water splitting technology. Here, we report an air-stable Cu-based nanostructure consisting of Mn doped CuCl and CuO (CuCl/CuO(Mn)-NF) as a dual functional electrocatalyst for water splitting. CuCl is identified as the main active component, together with Mn doping and the synergistic effect between CuCl and CuO are found to make responsibility for the excellent OER and HER catalytic activity and stability. The assembled electrolyzes also exhibit decent water splitting performance. This work not only provides a simple method for preparing Cu-based composite catalyst, but also demonstrates the great potential of Cu-based non-noble metal electrocatalysts for water splitting and other renewable energy conversion technologies.  相似文献

The development of active,low-cost and durable bifunctional electrocatalysts toward both oxygen evolution reaction(OER) and hydro gen evolution react ion(HER) a re important for overall water splitting.Here,well-defined arrays of vanadium-iron bimetal organic frameworks(VFe-MOF) with controllable stoichiometry have been successfully prepared on nickel foam(NF).The as-fabricated VFe-MOF@NF electrode exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity and durability for OER and HER in alkaline medium. The material's overpotentials of 10 mA/cm~2 are 246 mV for OER and 147 mV for HER,respectively. The electrolyzer made from the VFe-MOF@NF electrodes as both the cathode and anode in 1 mol/L KOH needs only a voltage of 1.61 V to reach a current density of 10 mA/cm~2.The superior performance of VFeMOF@NF can be attributed to the morphological control and electronic regulation of the bimetals, that is,1) the exposure of the active sites at electrocatalyst/electrolyte interfaces due to the array structure;2)the synergistic effect of vanadium and iron metals on electro-catalyzing the overall water splitting.  相似文献

Electrocatalysts are required for clean energy technologies (for example, water‐splitting and metal‐air batteries). The development of a multifunctional electrocatalyst composed of nitrogen, phosphorus, and fluorine tri‐doped graphene is reported, which was obtained by thermal activation of a mixture of polyaniline‐coated graphene oxide and ammonium hexafluorophosphate (AHF). It was found that thermal decomposition of AHF provides nitrogen, phosphorus, and fluorine sources for tri‐doping with N, P, and F, and simultaneously facilitates template‐free formation of porous structures as a result of thermal gas evolution. The resultant N, P, and F tri‐doped graphene exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activities for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The trifunctional metal‐free catalyst was further used as an OER–HER bifunctional catalyst for oxygen and hydrogen gas production in an electrochemical water‐splitting unit, which was powered by an integrated Zn–air battery based on an air electrode made from the same electrocatalyst for ORR. The integrated unit, fabricated from the newly developed N, P, and F tri‐doped graphene multifunctional metal‐free catalyst, can operate in ambient air with a high gas production rate of 0.496 and 0.254 μL s−1 for hydrogen and oxygen gas, respectively, showing great potential for practical applications.  相似文献

Typically, rational interfacial engineering can effectively modify the adsorption energy of active hydrogen molecules to improve water splitting efficiency. NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) composite, an efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst, suffers from slow hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) kinetics, restricting its application for overall water splitting. Herein, we construct the hierarchical MoS2/NiFe LDH nanosheets with a heterogeneous interface used for HER and OER. Benefiting the hierarchical heterogeneous interface optimized hydrogen Gibbs free energy, tens of exposed active sites, rapid mass- and charge-transfer processes, the MoS2/NiFe LDH displays a highly efficient synergistic electrocatalytic effect. The MoS2/NiFe LDH electrode in 1 mol/L KOH exhibits excellent HER activity, only 98 mV overpotential at 10 mA/cm2. Significantly, when it assembled as anode and cathode for overall water splitting, only 1.61 V cell voltage was required to achieve 10 mA/cm2 with excellent durability (50 h).  相似文献

Designing cost‐effective and efficient electrocatalysts plays a pivotal role in advancing the development of electrochemical water splitting for hydrogen generation. Herein, multifunctional active‐center‐transferable heterostructured electrocatalysts, platinum/lithium cobalt oxide (Pt/LiCoO2) composites with Pt nanoparticles (Pt NPs) anchored on LiCoO2 nanosheets, are designed towards highly efficient water splitting. In this electrocatalyst system, the active center can be alternatively switched between Pt species and LiCoO2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively. Specifically, Pt species are the active centers and LiCoO2 acts as the co‐catalyst for HER, whereas the active center transfers to LiCoO2 and Pt turns into the co‐catalyst for OER. The unique architecture of Pt/LiCoO2 heterostructure provides abundant interfaces with favorable electronic structure and coordination environment towards optimal adsorption behavior of reaction intermediates. The 30 % Pt/LiCoO2 heterostructured electrocatalyst delivers low overpotentials of 61 and 285 mV to achieve 10 mA cm?2 for HER and OER in alkaline medium, respectively.

For electrocatalytic water splitting, the sluggish anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) restricts the cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Therefore, developing an alternative anodic reaction with accelerating kinetics to produce value‐added chemicals, especially coupled with HER, is of great importance. Now, a thermodynamically more favorable primary amine (?CH2?NH2) electrooxidation catalyzed by NiSe nanorod arrays in water is reported to replace OER for enhancing HER. The increased H2 production can be obtained at cathode; meanwhile, a variety of aromatic and aliphatic primary amines are selectively electrooxidized to nitriles with good yields at the anode. Mechanistic investigations suggest that NiII/NiIII may serve as the redox active species for the primary amines transformation. Hydrophobic nitrile products can readily escape from aqueous electrolyte/electrode interface, avoiding the deactivation of the catalyst and thus contributing to continuous gram‐scale synthesis.  相似文献

Both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are crucial to water splitting, but require alternative active sites. Now, a general π‐electron‐assisted strategy to anchor single‐atom sites (M=Ir, Pt, Ru, Pd, Fe, Ni) on a heterogeneous support is reported. The M atoms can simultaneously anchor on two distinct domains of the hybrid support, four‐fold N/C atoms (M@NC), and centers of Co octahedra (M@Co), which are expected to serve as bifunctional electrocatalysts towards the HER and the OER. The Ir catalyst exhibits the best water‐splitting performance, showing a low applied potential of 1.603 V to achieve 10 mA cm?2 in 1.0 m KOH solution with cycling over 5 h. DFT calculations indicate that the Ir@Co (Ir) sites can accelerate the OER, while the Ir@NC3 sites are responsible for the enhanced HER, clarifying the unprecedented performance of this bifunctional catalyst towards full water splitting.  相似文献

The rational construction of electrocatalysts with desired features is significant but challenging for superior water splitting at high current density. Herein, amorphous CoNiS nanosheets are synthesized on nickel foam (NF) through a facile structure evolution strategy and present advanced performance at high current densities in water splitting. The high catalytic activity can be attributed to the sufficient active sites exposed by the flexible amorphous configuration. Moreover, the hydrophilicity and aerophobicity of a-CoNiS/NF promote surface wettability of the self-supporting electrode and avoid the aggregation of bubbles, which expedites the diffusion of electrolyte and facilitates the mass transfer. As a result, the optimized electrode demonstrates low overpotentials of 289 and 434 mV at 500 mA/cm2 under alkaline conditions for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively. Impressively, an electrolytic water splitting cell assembled by bifunctional a-CoNiS/NF operates with a low cell voltage of 1.46 V@10 mA/cm2 and reaches 1.79 V at 500 mA/cm2. The strategy sheds light on a competitive platform for the reasonable design of non-precious-metal electrocatalysts under high current density.  相似文献

Water electrolysis is a promising method for hydrogen production, so the preparation of low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts with a quick and simple procedure is crucial. Herein, iron phosphate (Fe7(PO4)6) was prepared via microwave radiation using ionic liquid (IL) as iron and phosphorus dual-source. This method is simple and rapid, and the product can be directly used as electrocatalysts without further treatment. The experimental results show that the IL can influence the morphology and electrocatalytic performance. Moreover, the addition of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is favorable for formation of iron phosphate nanoparticles to improve the catalytic activities. As hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst, this iron phosphate/CNTs exhibits an onset overpotential of 120 mV, Tafel slope of 32.9 mV dec-1, and current densities of 10 mA cm−2 at overpotential of 185 mV. Then, it obtains a good activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with a low onset potential of 1.48 V, Tafel slope of 73.3 mV dec-1, and it only needs an overpotential of 300 mV to drive the 10 mA cm−2. This bifunctional catalyst also shows good durability for HER and OER. This microwave-assisted method provides an outstanding strategy to prepare iron phosphate in a simple and fast process with good catalytic performance for water splitting.  相似文献

Electrochemical water splitting is a facile and effective route to generate pure hydrogen and oxygen. However, the sluggish kinetics of hydrogen evolution reaction(HER) and especially oxygen evolution reaction(OER) hinder the water splitting efficiency.Meanwhile, the high-cost of noble-metal catalysts limit their actual application. It is thus highly urgent to exploit an economical and earthabundant bifunctional HER and OER electrocatalyst to simplify procedure and reduce cost.Herein,we synthesize the three-dimensionally ordered macro-/mesoporous(3 DOM/m) Ni_xCo_(100-x) alloys with distinctive structure and large surface area via a dual-templating technique.Among them,the3 DOM/m Ni_(61)Co_(39) shows the lowest overpotentials of 121 mV and 241 mV at 10 mA/cm~2 for HER and OER,respectively.Furthermore, when employed for water splitting, the Ni_(61)Co_(39) only requires 1.60 V to approach 10 mA/cm2 and presents excellent stability. These encouraging performances of the Ni_(61)Co_(39)render it a promising bifunctional catalyst for overall water splitting.  相似文献

A bifunctional electrocatalyst interface requires a superior charge transfer and good electric conductivity to produce an efficient and stable water splitting reaction. In the context of controlling the electrochemical activity of bifunctional catalytic materials, we demonstrate a novel approach to bridge conductive C-Qd-Mn interfaces with precise control. The excellent performance for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) can be dominantly attributed to the unique structure of C-Qds-Mn, which provides abundant active sites and facilitates electron transfer between electrode and electrolyte. Eco-friendly C-Qds were synthesized using a large-scale thermal assisted technique and utilized as electrocatalysts with Mn3O4 in alkaline splitting ToF (Turn over Frequency) calculation to make an effective combination. Due to their increased ECSA, conductivity, and electron-hole transfer, the prepared C-Qds-Mn delivered excellent HER/OER (0.494 V/1.6671V) activity, lower Standard deviation 0.006 V and 0.009V, surpassing the 10 mA limit comparable to commercially.  相似文献
