We show that the real-valued function on the moduli space of pointed rational curves, defined as the critical value of the Liouville action functional on a hyperbolic -sphere with conical singularities of arbitrary orders , generates accessory parameters of the associated Fuchsian differential equation as their common antiderivative. We introduce a family of Kähler metrics on parameterized by the set of orders , explicitly relate accessory parameters to these metrics, and prove that the functions are their Kähler potentials.

Given distinct real numbers and a positive approximation of the identity , which converges weakly to the Dirac delta measure as goes to zero, we investigate the polynomials which solve the interpolation problem


with prescribed data . More specifically, we are interested in the behavior of when the data is of the form for some prescribed function . One of our results asserts that if is sufficiently nice and has sufficiently well-behaved moments, then converges to a limit which can be completely characterized. As an application we identify the limits of certain fundamental interpolatory splines whose knot set is , where is an arbitrary finite subset of the integer lattice , as their degree goes to infinity.

Let be a homogeneous Riemannian manifold with , where denotes the universal complexification of . Under certain extensibility assumptions on the geodesic flow of , we give a characterization of the maximal domain of definition in for the adapted complex structure and show that it is unique. For instance, this can be done for generalized Heisenberg groups and naturally reductive homogeneous Riemannian spaces. As an application it is shown that the case of generalized Heisenberg groups yields examples of maximal domains of definition for the adapted complex structure which are neither holomorphically separable nor holomorphically convex.

We show that large rectangular semigroups can be found in certain Stone-Cech compactifications. In particular, there are copies of the rectangular semigroup in the smallest ideal of , and so, a semigroup consisting of idempotents can be embedded in the smallest ideal of if and only if it is a subsemigroup of the rectangular semigroup. In fact, we show that for any ordinal with cardinality at most , contains a semigroup of idempotents whose rectangular components are all copies of the rectangular semigroup and form a decreasing chain indexed by , with the minimum component contained in the smallest ideal of .

As a fortuitous corollary we obtain the fact that there are -chains of idempotents of length in . We show also that there are copies of the direct product of the rectangular semigroup with the free group on generators contained in the smallest ideal of .

We associate a -structure to a family of objects in , the derived category of a Grothendieck category . Using general results on -structures, we give a new proof of Rickard's theorem on equivalence of bounded derived categories of modules. Also, we extend this result to bounded derived categories of quasi-coherent sheaves on separated divisorial schemes obtaining, in particular, Belinson's equivalences.

We present a new inversion formula for the classical, finite, and asymptotic Laplace transform of continuous or generalized functions . The inversion is given as a limit of a sequence of finite linear combinations of exponential functions whose construction requires only the values of evaluated on a Müntz set of real numbers. The inversion sequence converges in the strongest possible sense. The limit is uniform if is continuous, it is in if , and converges in an appropriate norm or Fréchet topology for generalized functions . As a corollary we obtain a new constructive inversion procedure for the convolution transform ; i.e., for given and we construct a sequence of continuous functions such that .

We consider the hyperbolic Hardy class , . It consists of holomorphic in the unit complex ball for which and

We consider a metric measure space and a heat kernel on satisfying certain upper and lower estimates, which depend on two parameters and . We show that under additional mild assumptions, these parameters are determined by the intrinsic properties of the space . Namely, is the Hausdorff dimension of this space, whereas , called the walk dimension, is determined via the properties of the family of Besov spaces on . Moreover, the parameters and are related by the inequalities .

We prove also the embedding theorems for the space , and use them to obtain the existence results for weak solutions to semilinear elliptic equations on of the form

A chain order of a skew field is a subring of so that implies Such a ring has rank one if , the Jacobson radical of is its only nonzero completely prime ideal. We show that a rank one chain order of is either invariant, in which case corresponds to a real-valued valuation of or is nearly simple, in which case and are the only ideals of or is exceptional in which case contains a prime ideal that is not completely prime. We use the group of divisorial of with the subgroup of principal to characterize these cases. The exceptional case subdivides further into infinitely many cases depending on the index of in Using the covering group of and the result that the group ring is embeddable into a skew field for a skew field, examples of rank one chain orders are constructed for each possible exceptional case.

Say that a separable, unital -algebra is strongly self-absorbing if there exists an isomorphism such that and are approximately unitarily equivalent -homomorphisms. We study this class of algebras, which includes the Cuntz algebras , , the UHF algebras of infinite type, the Jiang-Su algebra and tensor products of with UHF algebras of infinite type. Given a strongly self-absorbing -algebra we characterise when a separable -algebra absorbs tensorially (i.e., is -stable), and prove closure properties for the class of separable -stable -algebras. Finally, we compute the possible -groups and prove a number of classification results which suggest that the examples listed above are the only strongly self-absorbing -algebras.

For a domain in and a Hilbert space of analytic functions on which satisfies certain conditions, we characterize the commuting -tuples of operators on a separable Hilbert space  such that is unitarily equivalent to the restriction of to an invariant subspace, where is the operator -tuple on the Hilbert space tensor product  . For the unit disc and the Hardy space , this reduces to a well-known theorem of Sz.-Nagy and Foias; for a reproducing kernel Hilbert space on such that the reciprocal of its reproducing kernel is a polynomial in and  , this is a recent result of Ambrozie, Müller and the second author. In this paper, we extend the latter result by treating spaces for which ceases to be a polynomial, or even has a pole: namely, the standard weighted Bergman spaces (or, rather, their analytic continuation) on a Cartan domain corresponding to the parameter in the continuous Wallach set, and reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces for which is a rational function. Further, we treat also the more general problem when the operator is replaced by ,  being a certain generalization of a unitary operator tuple. For the case of the spaces on Cartan domains, our results are based on an analysis of the homogeneous multiplication operators on , which seems to be of an independent interest.

Harris proved the following result: any formal power series such that is analytic is itself analytic. If the Jacobian determinant of is identically zero, they proved that the previous conclusion is no more true.

The authors get similar results in the case of formal power series satifying growth conditions, of Gevrey type for instance. Moreover, the proofs here give, in the analytic case, a control of the radius of convergence of by the radius of convergence of .

A computably enumerable Boolean algebra is effectively dense if for each we can effectively determine an such that implies . We give an interpretation of true arithmetic in the theory of the lattice of computably enumerable ideals of such a Boolean algebra. As an application, we also obtain an interpretation of true arithmetic in all theories of intervals of (the lattice of computably enumerable sets under inclusion) which are not Boolean algebras. We derive a similar result for theories of certain initial intervals of subrecursive degree structures, where is the degree of a set of relatively small complexity, for instance a set in exponential time.

Let be a unital Banach algebra and let be a closed two-sided ideal of . We prove that if any invertible element of has an invertible lifting in , then the quotient homomorphism is a spectral interpolant. This result is used to obtain a noncommutative multivariable analogue of the spectral commutant lifting theorem of Bercovici, Foias, and Tannenbaum. This yields spectral versions of Sarason, Nevanlinna-Pick, and Carathéodory type interpolation for , the WOT-closed algebra generated by the spatial tensor product of the noncommutative analytic Toeplitz algebra and , the algebra of bounded operators on a finite dimensional Hilbert space . A spectral tangential commutant lifting theorem in several variables is considered and used to obtain a spectral tangential version of the Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation for .

In particular, we obtain interpolation theorems for matrix-valued bounded analytic functions on the open unit ball of , in which one bounds the spectral radius of the interpolant and not the norm.

A celebrated theorem of Kemer (1978) states that any algebra satisfying a polynomial identity over a field of characteristic zero is PI-equivalent to the Grassmann envelope of a finite dimensional superalgebra . In this paper, by exploiting the basic properties of the exponent of a PI-algebra proved by Giambruno and Zaicev (1999), we define and classify the minimal superalgebras of a given exponent over a field of characteristic zero. In particular we prove that these algebras can be realized as block-triangular matrix algebras over the base field.

The importance of such algebras is readily proved: is a minimal superalgebra if and only if the ideal of identities of is a product of verbally prime T-ideals. Also, such superalgebras allow us to classify all minimal varieties of a given exponent i.e., varieties such that and for all proper subvarieties of . This proves in the positive a conjecture of Drensky (1988). As a corollary we obtain that there is only a finite number of minimal varieties for any given exponent. A classification of minimal varieties of finite basic rank was proved by the authors (2003).

As an application we give an effective way for computing the exponent of a T-ideal given by generators and we discuss the problem of what functions can appear as growth functions of varieties of algebras.

Theorem: If is a simply-connected -step nilpotent Lie group, is non-integrable, is a cocompact subgroup, and is a left-invariant Riemannian metric, then the geodesic flow of on is neither Liouville nor non-commutatively integrable with first integrals. The proof uses a generalization of the rotation vector pioneered by Benardete and Mitchell.

Let be an integer base, a digit set and the set of radix expansions. It is well known that if has nonvoid interior, then can tile with some translation set ( is called a tile and a tile digit set). There are two fundamental questions studied in the literature: (i) describe the structure of ; (ii) for a given , characterize so that is a tile.

We show that for a given pair , there is a unique self-replicating translation set , and it has period for some . This completes some earlier work of Kenyon. Our main result for (ii) is to characterize the tile digit sets for when are distinct primes. The only other known characterization is for , due to Lagarias and Wang. The proof for the case depends on the techniques of Kenyon and De Bruijn on the cyclotomic polynomials, and also on an extension of the product-form digit set of Odlyzko.
