We used real‐time Fourier transform infrared to monitor the conversion of both thiol and ene (vinyl) functional groups independently during photoinduced thiol–ene photopolymerizations. From these results, the stoichiometry of various thiol–ene and thiol–acrylate polymerizations was determined. For thiol–ene polymerizations, the conversion of ene functional groups was up to 15% greater than the conversion of thiol functional groups. For stoichiometric thiol–acrylate polymerizations, the conversion of the acrylate functional groups was roughly twice that of the thiol functional groups. With kinetic expressions for thiol–acrylate polymerizations, the acrylate propagation kinetic constant was found to be 1.5 times greater than the rate constant for hydrogen abstraction from the thiol. Conversions of thiol–acrylate systems of various initial stoichiometries were successfully predicted with this ratio of propagation and chain‐transfer kinetic constants. Thiol–acrylate systems with different initial stoichiometries exhibited diverse network properties. Thiol–ene systems were initiated with benzophenone and 2,2‐dimethoxy‐2‐phenylacetophenone as initiators and were also polymerized without a photoinitiator. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A novel hexafunctional discotic initiator, 2,3,6,7,11,12‐hexakis(2‐bromobutyryloxy)triphenylene (HBTP), was synthesized by the esterification of 2,3,6,7,11,12‐hexahydroxytriphenylene with 2‐bromobutyryl chloride. Atom transfer radical polymerizations of styrene, methyl acrylate, and n‐butyl acrylate were carried out in 50 vol % tetrahydrofuran with HBTP/copper(I) bromide/2,2′‐bipyridyl as an initiation system. The polymers produced had well‐controlled molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions (<1.2). On the basis of 1H NMR spectra of the star polymer and its hydrolyzed products, we can conclude that the initiator quantitatively initiated the polymerization of vinyl monomers and that a star polymer with a discotic core was obtained. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Commercial poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) contains allyl chloride and tertiary chloride groups as structural defects. This article reports the use of the active chloride groups from the structural defects of PVC as initiators for the metal‐catalyzed living radical graft copolymerization of PVC. The following monomers were investigated in graft copolymerization experiments: methyl methacrylate, butyl methacrylate, tert‐butyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, methacrylonitrile, acrylonitrile, styrene, 4‐chloro‐styrene, 4‐methyl‐styrene, and isobornylmethacrylate. Cu(0)/bpy, CuCl/bpy, CuBr/bpy, Cu2O/bpy, Cu2S/bpy, and Cu2Se/bpy (where bpy = 2,2′‐bipyridine) were used as catalysts. Living radical polymerizations initiated from 1‐chloro‐3‐methyl‐2‐butene, allyl bromide, and 1,4‐dichloro‐2‐butene as models for the allyl chloride structural defects and from 3‐chloro‐3‐methyl‐pentane and 1,3‐dichloro‐3‐methylbutane as models for the tertiary chloride defects were studied. Graft copolymerization experiments were accessible in solution, in a swollen state, and in bulk. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 39: 1120–1135, 2001  相似文献

A new trithiocarbonate 1 bearing two hydroxyl moieties was synthesized and employed as a RAFT agent for radical polymerization of vinyl monomers. 1 mediated RAFT polymerizations of styrene and ethyl acrylate to give the corresponding polymers with predictable molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions. Structural analyses of the polymers with NMR and MALDI‐TOF mass techniques revealed that they were telechelic ones, of which both chain ends were endowed with hydroxyl groups inherited from trithiocarbonate 1 . Usefulness of these telechelic polymers as polymeric diol‐type building blocks was demonstrated in their polyaddition with diisocyanates, which gave the corresponding polyurethanes. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report on the controlled free radical homopolymerization of 1‐ferrocenylethyl acrylate as well as of three new ferrocene bearing monomers, namely 4‐ferrocenylbutyl acrylate, 2‐ferrocenylamido‐2‐methylpropyl acrylate, and 4‐ferrocenylbutyl methacrylate, by the RAFT technique. For comparison, the latter monomer was polymerized using ATRP, too. The ferrocene containing monomers were found to be less reactive than their analogues free of ferrocene. The reasons for the low polymerizability are not entirely clear. As the addition of free ferrocene to the reaction mixture did not notably affect the polymerizations, sterical hindrance by the bulky ferrocene moiety fixed on the monomers seems to be the most probable explanation. Molar masses found for 1‐ferrocenylethyl acrylate did not exceed 10,000 g mol?1, while for 4‐ferrocenylbutyl (meth)acrylate molar masses of 15,000 g mol?1 could be obtained. With PDIs as low as 1.3 in RAFT polymerization of the monomers, good control over the polymerization was achieved. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

Butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, and vinyl acetate solution and emulsion terpolymerizations were conducted. Attenuated total relflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy equipped with conduit and diamond-composite sensor technology was used to monitor solution terpolymerizations off-line and emulsion terpolymerizations in-line. Monomer conversion and terpolymer composition changes as a function of time were calculated by monitoring the peak height of characteristic absorbances of each monomer. Results obtained from the ReactIR™ 1000 reaction-analysis system agreed well with those determined by traditional gravimetry and 1H NMR spectroscopy. For the solution terpolymerizations, improved models developed previously to incorporate solvent effects on solution polymerizations of butyl acrylate and vinyl acetate monomers were applied to predict monomer conversion, copolymer composition, and molecular weight averages. Comparisons between experimental data and model predictions are presented. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 39: 1860–1876, 2001  相似文献

A novel catalytic method for carrying out the cationic polymerizations has been developed based on a redox initiator system in which the reducing component is delivered to the reaction mixture in the vapor state. The redox couple consists of a diaryliodonium salt that is dissolved in the monomer and a noble metal catalyst is added. The silane reducing agent is introduced to the reaction mixture in the vapor state using air as the carrier gas. Reduction of the diaryliodonium salt by the silane results in the liberation of a Brønsted superacid that initiates cationic polymerizations. A study of the effects of variations in the structures of the diaryliodonium salt, the silane, and the type of noble metal catalyst was carried out. In principle, the initiator system is applicable to all types of cationically polymerizable monomers and oligomers including: the ring‐opening polymerizations of such heterocyclic monomers as epoxides and oxetanes and, in addition, the polymerization of vinyl ether monomers such as vinyl ethers. The use of this initiator system for carrying out commercially attractive cross‐linking polymerizations for coatings, composites, and encapsulations is discussed. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Bicyclobutanes and cyclobutenes substituted with electron‐attracting groups represent novel classes of reactive monomers. They readily undergo free‐radical and anionic polymerizations to give high polymers consisting of 1,3‐ and 1,2‐enchained cyclobutane rings, respectively. They also copolymerize readily with conventional vinyl monomers. These polymers display numerous attractive properties in comparison with their vinyl counterparts, including enhanced thermal stability, superior optical properties, and higher glass‐transition temperatures. The syntheses of these monomers are reviewed, and suggestions toward future larger scale production are made. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 41: 625–635, 2003  相似文献

Phosphorus‐containing vinyl ether monomers and 1‐propenyl ether monomers were prepared by the regioselective addition reaction of glycidyl vinyl ether (GVE) or 1‐propenyl glycidyl ether with diaryl phosphonates with quaternary onium salts as catalysts. The reaction of GVE with bis(4‐chlorophenyl) phenylphosphonate gave bis[1‐(4‐chlorophenoxy methyl)‐2‐(vinyloxy)ethyl]phenylphosphonate in a 68% yield. The structures of the resulting phosphorus‐containing vinyl ether monomers and 1‐propenyl ether monomers were confirmed by IR and 1H NMR spectra and elemental analysis. Photoinitiated cationic polymerizations of the resulting phosphorus‐containing vinyl ether monomers and 1‐propenyl ether monomers were investigated with photoacid generators. The polymerization of vinyl ether groups and 1‐propenyl ether groups of the obtained monomers proceeded very smoothly with a sulfonium‐type cationic photoinitiator, bis[4‐(diphenylsulfonio)phenyl]sulfide‐bis(hexafluorophosphate), upon UV irradiation. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 1H NMR chemical shifts of the protons in the vinyl groups of monomers are correlated with their reactivities in anionic, coordinated anionic, and cationic polymerizations. The relative reactivities of styrenes in anionic addition reactions with living polystyrene increase linearly with the chemical shift of the proton trans to the substituent (δH1). Only the plot for 2,4,6-trimethylstyrene deviates very much from the linear relation because of the large steric hindrance. The relative reactivities of methacrylates in anionic copolymerizations increase with increasing chemical shifts of protons attached to the β-carbon of methacrylates. In cationic polymerizations of styrenes, the relative reactivities decrease with increasing δH1. The relative reactivities in coordinated anionic polymerizations with Ti-containing Ziegler initiators show a typical feature of cationic polymerization, and those with V-containing initiators show a typical feature of anionic polymerization, indicating the importance of the coordination process in the propagation reaction with Ti-containing initiator systems. From the results, it can be concluded that the chemical shifts of the protons attached to the β-carbon of vinyl monomers can be used as a practical measure of the reactivity of vinyl monomers in ionic polymerizations and also as a tool for understanding the mechanism of polymerization. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Multifunctional alkyl glycidyl ether and oxetane monomers are usually deemed to be poorly reactive and are consequently of limited use for high speed photocuring applications. However, these monomers can be made to undergo exceedingly rapid exothermic photopolymerization when combined with a multifunctional acrylate monomer and a corresponding free radical photoinitiator. Under optimum UV irradiation conditions, these hybrid photopolymerizations take place rapidly and substantially without an induction period. A mechanism was proposed on the basis of thermal acceleration of the cationic ring‐opening polymerizations induced by the fast exothermic free radical acrylate photopolymerization. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Diaryliodonium salts undergo facile reduction by the dialkylborane, 9‐BBN. The combination of these two reagents constitutes a redox couple that can be employed as a convenient and versatile initiator system for the cationic polymerizations of styrenic monomers, vinyl ethers and the ring‐opening polymerizations of cyclic ethers and acetals including; epoxides, oxetanes, tetrahydrofuran, and 1,3,5‐trioxane. The polymerizations of these monomers can be carried out in either neat monomer or under solution conditions. Typically, the redox cationic polymerizations of the above monomers are rapid and exothermic. Optical pyrometry (infrared thermography) was employed as a convenient method with which to monitor and optimize the aforementioned redox initiated cationic polymerizations. Studies of the effects of variations in the structure and concentrations of the diaryliodonium salt and 9‐BBN on the polymerizations of various monomers were carried out. A mechanism for the redox cationic initiation of the polymerizations was proposed. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 47: 5639–5651, 2009  相似文献

A series of novel, cycloaliphatic, cationically photopolymerizable epoxide monomers bearing benzyl ether groups were prepared. These monomers display a considerable enhancement in the rate of their cationic ring‐opening polymerizations in comparison with monomers that do not contain such groups. In this article, a synergistic free‐radical mechanism is proposed that accounts for this effect, and supporting evidence is offered for its verification. During UV irradiation of an onium salt cationic photoinitiator, the aryl radicals that are generated abstract labile benzyl hydrogens present in such monomers to generate the corresponding carbon‐centered radicals. Subsequently, these radicals are oxidized to benzyl carbocations by the onium salt via a nonphotochemical chain process. The observed increase in the rate and extent of the cationic ring‐opening polymerization of the epoxide monomers is due to the aforementioned mechanism, which effectively increases the number of reactive cationic species present during polymerization. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The organometallic monomers styrenetricarbonylchromium and p‐methylstyrenetricarbonylchromium were copolymerized in ethyl acetate solutions with methyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate using azobisisobutyronitrile at 50 °C and a binary system including di‐tert‐butylperoxytriphenylantimony at 30 °C as the free‐radical initiators. Comonomers are proposed to form a molecular complex based on the results of ultraviolet and electron spin resonance spectroscopy. A kinetic study shows that chromium‐containing monomers at high concentrations in the mixture reduce the rate of copolymerization. The addition of styrenetricarbonylchromium to butyl acrylate significantly slows down the autoacceleration. The reactivity ratios of the comonomer pairs, namely, styrenetricarbonylchromium–methyl methacrylate, styrenetricarbonylchromium–butyl acrylate and p‐methylstyrenetricarbonylchromium–methyl methacrylate, were determined using the method of Kelen–Tudos for low conversion polymerizations.Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The free radical polymerization of four methylated cyclic allylic sulfides was examined with reference to their polymerization volume shrinkage and the effect of ring size on reactivity. The compounds examined were 2‐methyl‐5‐methylene‐1,3‐dithiane ( 5 ) (solid), 2‐methyl‐6‐methylene‐1,4‐dithiepane ( 6 ) (liquid), 6‐methyl‐3‐methylene‐1,5‐dithiacyclooctane ( 7 ) (liquid), and 6,8‐dimethyl‐3‐methylene‐1,5‐dithiacyclooctane ( 8 ) (liquid). The monomers were stable materials not requiring any special handling or storage conditions. They were polymerized in bulk using thermal azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN, VAZO88) and photochemical initiators (Ciba DAROCUR 1173) and in benzene solutions (AIBN, 70 °C). The six‐membered ring monomer 5 was unreactive whereas seven‐membered ring monomer 6 polymerized to high conversion in bulk. In addition, 6 did not polymerize in benzene solution at 70 °C at [ 6 ] = 1.25M. Eight‐membered ring monomers 7 and 8 polymerized in bulk to complete conversion with thermal and photochemical initiators to give lightly crosslinked materials. Near complete conversion to soluble polymers could be obtained in solution polymerizations in benzene. Soluble polymers were also obtained in photochemical initiated bulk polymerizations by lowering initiator concentrations or length of irradiation. The methyl substituent had no effect on which allylic carbon–sulfur bond fragmented in the ring‐opening step. The polymerization volume shrinkages of monomers 7 and 8 were 1.5 and 2.4% respectively and together with monomer 4 (1.5–2.0% shrinkage) are the best available liquid free radical ring‐opening monomers that can be polymerized in bulk at room temperature. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Novel water‐borne macrophotoinitiator containing thioxanthone (TX) end group was successfully synthesized by using Diels–Alder (DA) [4 + 2] click chemistry strategy. For this purpose, thioxanthone‐anthracene (TX‐A) and maleimide end‐functionalized poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG‐MI) were reacted in toluene at reflux temperature for 48 h. The final polymer (PEG‐TX) and the intermediates were characterized in detail by spectral analysis. PEG‐TX possesses absorption characteristics similar to the parent TX. The one‐component photoinitiating nature of the photointiator was demonstrated by photopolymeization of several hydrophilic vinyl monomers, such as acrylic acid, acrylamide, 2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate, and 1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two phosphorus‐containing acrylate monomers were synthesized from the reaction of ethyl α‐chloromethyl acrylate and t‐butyl α‐bromomethyl acrylate with triethyl phosphite. The selective hydrolysis of the ethyl ester monomer with trimethylsilyl bromide (TMSBr) gave a phosphonic acid monomer. The attempted bulk polymerizations of the monomers at 57–60 °C with 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) were unsuccessful; however, the monomers were copolymerized with methyl methacrylate (MMA) in bulk at 60 °C with AIBN. The resulting copolymers produced chars on burning, showing potential as flame‐retardant materials. Additionally, α‐(chloromethyl)acryloyl chloride (CMAC) was reacted with diethyl (hydroxymethyl)phosphonate to obtain a new monomer with identical ester and ether moieties. This monomer was hydrolyzed with TMSBr, homopolymerized, and copolymerized with MMA. The thermal stabilities of the copolymers increased with increasing amounts of the phosphonate monomer in the copolymers. A new route to highly reactive phosphorus‐containing acrylate monomers was developed. A new derivative of CMAC with mixed ester and ether groups was synthesized by substitution, first with diethyl (hydroxymethyl)phosphonate and then with sodium acetate. This monomer showed the highest reactivity and gave a crosslinked polymer. The incorporation of an ester group increased the rate of polymerization. The relative reactivities of the synthesized monomers in photopolymerizations were determined and compared with those of the other phosphorous‐containing acrylate monomers. Changing the monomer structure allowed control of the polymerization reactivity so that new phosphorus‐containing polymers with desirable properties could be obtained. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Four kinds of vinyl polymers containing N-substituted phenothiazinyl groups in side chains were obtained by syntheses of the respective monomers and subsequent polymerizations. Thus, N-acrylamidomethylphenothiazine, N-(N-acrylamidomethyl)carbamoylethyl phenothiazine, β-(N-phenothiazinyl)ethyl acrylate and methacrylate, and β-(N-phenothiazinyl)ethyl vinyl ether were synthesized. It was found that all monomers except the last monomer can be polymerized with typical free-radical initiators such as α,α′-azobisisobutyronitrile to afford stable soluble polymers with electron-donating characteristics, presumably due to the absence of a hydrogen atom at the site of the nitrogen atom of the phenothiazinyl group. The last monomer was found to be susceptible to typical cationic initiators such as boron trifluoride etherate to afford a stable soluble polymer also with the electron-donating characteristic.  相似文献

Polymerization of multifunctional acrylate monomers generates crosslinked polymers that are noted for their mechanical strength, thermal stability, and chemical resistance. A common reactive diluent to photopolymerizable formulations is N‐vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP), which is known to reduce the inhibition of free radical photopolymerization by atmospheric oxygen. In this work, the copolymerization behavior of NVP was examined in acrylate monomers with two to five functional groups. At concentrations as low as 2 wt %, NVP increases the polymerization rate in copolymerization with multifunctional acrylate monomer. The relative rate enhancement associated with adding NVP increases dramatically as the number of acrylate double bonds changes from two to five. The influence of NVP on polymerization kinetics is related to synergistic cross‐propagation between NVP and acrylate monomer, which becomes increasingly favorable with diffusion limitations. This synergy extends bimolecular termination into higher double bond conversion through reaction diffusion controlled termination. Copolymerizing concentrations of 5–30 DB% NVP with diacrylate or pentaacrylate monomer also increases Young's modulus and the glass transition temperature (Tg) in comparison to neat acrylate polymers. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We describe the synthesis of several different polycarbonate particles by miniemulsion polymerization. The monomers were allylmethyl carbonate (AlMeC), di(ethylene glycol) bisallylcarbonate (DBAC), and 4‐vinyl‐1,3‐dioxan‐2‐one [vinyl ethylene carbonate (VEC)]. For these polymerizations, higher monomer conversions were obtained with oil‐soluble initiators (azobisisobutyronitrile and benzoyl peroxide) than with a water‐soluble initiator (potassium persulfate). Benzoyl peroxide was particularly effective in yielding particles with a narrow size distribution. Although increasing amounts of a surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate) led to smaller particles, the choice of the monomer was the major determinant. For example, in polymerization reactions carried out at 85 °C with benzoyl peroxide as the initiator and with otherwise identical recipes, we obtained particle sizes of 181 nm with AlMeC, 296 nm with VEC, and 203 nm with DBAC. Fluorescent particles were synthesized with comonomers based on the benzothioxanthene nucleus. Because the dyes had poor solubility in the monomers, it was necessary to include typically 20 wt % bromobenzene or dichlorobenzene based on the monomer in the miniemulsion reaction mixture. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
