The effect of homogeneous electric fields on the adsorption energies of atomic and molecular oxygen and the dissociation activation energy of molecular oxygen on Pt(111) were studied by density functional theory (DFT). Positive electric fields, corresponding to positively charged surfaces, reduce the adsorption energies of the oxygen species on Pt(111), whereas negative fields increase the adsorption energies. The magnitude of the energy change for a given field is primarily determined by the static surface dipole moment induced by adsorption. On 10-atom Pt(111) clusters, the adsorption energy of atomic oxygen decreased by ca. 0.25 eV in the presence of a 0.51 V/A (0.01 au) electric field. This energy change, however, is heavily dependent on the number of atoms in the Pt(111) cluster, as the static dipole moment decreases with cluster size. Similar calculations with periodic slab models revealed a change in energy smaller by roughly an order of magnitude relative to the 10-atom cluster results. Calculations with adsorbed molecular oxygen and its transition state for dissociation showed similar behavior. Additionally, substrate relaxation in periodic slab models lowers the static dipole moment and, therefore, the effect of electric field on binding energy. The results presented in this paper indicate that the electrostatic effect of electric fields at fuel cell cathodes may be sufficiently large to influence the oxygen reduction reaction kinetics by increasing the activation energy for dissociation.

We report a first-principles, periodic supercell analysis of oxygen adsorption, diffusion, and dissociation at the kinked Pt(321) surface. Binding energies and binding site preferences of isolated oxygen atoms and molecules have been determined, and we show that both atomic and molecular oxygen prefer binding in bridge sites involving coordinatively unsaturated kink Pt atoms. Binding energies of atomic and molecular oxygen in different sites correlate well with the average metallic Pt coordination number of Pt atoms forming each site, although differences exist between adsorbates in symmetrically similar sites due to the inherent chirality of the surface. Atomic O in the strongest binding bridge sites experiences relatively small energy barriers for diffusion to neighboring sites compared to O on Pt(111). However, due to the structure of the surface, O diffusion is only rapid between different sites around the kink Pt atom, whereas the effective long-range tracer diffusion, as determined from a simple course-grain model, is shown to be anisotropic and slower than on the Pt(111) surface. Four dissociation pathways for O(2) at low coverage are also reported and found to be in agreement with experimental observations of facile dissociation, even at low temperature.

The dynamics and kinetics of the dissociation of hydrogen over the hexagonal close packed platinum (Pt(111)) surface are investigated using Car–Parrinello molecular dynamics and static density functional theory calculations of the potential energy surfaces. The calculations model the reference energy‐resolved molecular beam experiments, considering the degrees of freedom of the catalytic surface. Two‐dimensional potential energy surfaces above the main sites on Pt(111) are determined. Combined with Car–Parrinello trajectories, they confirm the dissociative adsorption of H2 as the only adsorption pathway on this surface at H2 incindence energies above 5 kJ/mol. A direct determination of energy‐resolved sticking coefficients from molecular dynamics is also performed, showing an excellent agreement with the experimental data at incidence energies in the 5–30 kJ/mol range. Application of dispersion corrections does not lead to an improvement in the prediction of the H2 sticking coefficient. The adsorption reaction rate obtained from the calculated sticking coefficients is consistent with experimentally derived literature values.

We used the B3LYP flavor of density functional theory (DFT) to study the chemisorption of all CH(x) and C(2)H(y) intermediates on the Pt(111) surface. The surface was modeled with the 35 atom Pt(14.13.8) cluster, which was found to be reliable for describing all adsorption sites. We find that these hydrocarbons all bind covalently (sigma-bonds) to the surface, in agreement with the studies by Kua and Goddard on small Pt clusters. In nearly every case the structure of the adsorbed hydrocarbon achieves a saturated configuration in which each C is almost tetrahedral with the missing H atoms replaced by covalent bonds to the surface Pt atoms. Thus, (Pt(3))CH prefers a mu(3) hollow site (fcc), (Pt(2))CH(2) prefers a mu(2) bridge site, and PtCH(3) prefers mu(1) on-top sites. Vinyl leads to (Pt(2))CH-CH(2)(Pt), which prefers a mu(3) hollow site (fcc). The only exceptions to this model are ethynyl (CCH), which binds as (Pt(2))C=CH(Pt), retaining a CC pi-bond while binding at a mu(3) hollow site (fcc), and HCCH, which binds as (Pt)HC=CH(Pt), retaining a pi bond that coordinates to a third atom of a mu(3) hollow site (fcc) to form an off center structure. These structures are in good agreement with available experimental data. For all species we calculated heats of formation (DeltaH(f)) to be used for considering various reaction pathways on Pt(111). For conditions of low coverage, the most strongly bound CH(x) species is methylidyne (CH, BE = 146.61 kcal/mol), and ethylidyne (CCH(3), BE = 134.83 kcal/mol) among the C(2)H(y) molecules. We find that the net bond energy is nearly proportional to the number of C-Pt bonds (48.80 kcal/mol per bond) with the average bond energy decreasing slightly with the number of C ligands.

The adsorption energetics of NO and CO on Pt(111) are studied using an ab initio embedding theory. The Pt(111) surface is modeled as a three-layer, 28-atom cluster with the Pt atoms fixed at bulk lattice sites. Molecular NO is adsorbed at high symmetry sites on Pt(111), with the fcc threefold site energetically more favorable than the hcp threefold and bridge sites. The calculated adsorption energy at the fcc threefold site is 1.90 eV, with an N-surface distance of 1.23 Å. The NO molecular axis is perpendicular to the Pt(111) surface. Tilting the O atom away from the surface normal destablizes adsorbed NO at all adsorption sites considered. On-top Pt adsorption has been ruled out. The Pt(111) potential surface is very flat for CO adsorption, and the diffusion barriers from hcp to fcc sites are 0.03 eV and less than 0.06 eV across the bridge and the atop sites, respectively. Calculated adsorption energies are 1.67, 1.54, 1.51, and 1.60 eV at the fcc threefold, hcp threefold, bridge, and atop sites, respectively. Calculated C-surface distances are 1.24 Å at the fcc threefold site and 1.83 Å at the atop site. It is concluded that NO and CO adsorption energetics and geometries are different on Pt(111).

The excited states of CO adsorbed on the Pt(111) surface are studied using a time-dependent density functional theory formalism. To reduce the computational cost, electronic excitations are computed within a reduced single excitation space. Using cluster models of the surface, excitation energies are computed for CO in the on-top, threefold, and bridge binding sites. On adsorption, there is a lowering of the 5sigma orbital energy. This leads to a large blueshift in the 5sigma- -> pi(CO*) excitation energy for all adsorption sites. The 1pi and 4sigma orbital energies are lowered to a lesser extent, and smaller shifts in the corresponding excitation energies are predicted. For the larger clusters, pi* excitations at lower energies are observed. These transitions correspond to excitations to virtual orbitals of pi* character which lie below the pi* orbitals of gas phase CO. These orbitals are associated predominantly with the metal atoms of the cluster. The excitation energies are also found to be sensitive to changes in the adsorption geometry. The electronic spectrum of CO on Pt(111) is simulated and the assignment of the bands observed in experimental electron energy loss spectroscopy discussed.

Detailed formaldehyde adsorption and dissociation reactions on Fe(100) surface were studied using first principle calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and results were compared with available experimental data. The study includes formaldehyde, formyl radical (HCO), and CO adsorption and dissociation energy calculations on the surface, adsorbate vibrational frequency calculations, density of states analysis of clean and adsorbed surfaces, complete potential energy diagram construction from formaldehyde to atomic carbon (C), hydrogen (H), and oxygen (O), simulation of formaldehyde adsorption and dissociation reaction on the surface using reactive force field, ReaxFF MD, and reaction rate calculations of adsorbates using transition state theory (TST). Formaldehyde and HCO were adsorbed most strongly at the hollow (fourfold) site. Adsorption energies ranged from ?22.9 to ?33.9 kcal/mol for formaldehyde, and from ?44.3 to ?66.3 kcal/mol for HCO, depending on adsorption sites and molecular direction. The dissociation energies were investigated for the dissociation paths: formaldehyde → HCO + H, HCO → H + CO, and CO → C + O, and the calculated energies were 11.0, 4.1, and 26.3 kcal/mol, respectively. ReaxFF MD simulation results were compared with experimental surface analysis using high resolution electron energy loss spectrometry (HREELS) and TST based reaction rates. ReaxFF simulation showed less reactivity than HREELS observation at 310 and 523 K. ReaxFF simulation showed more reactivity than the TST based rate for formaldehyde dissociation and less reactivity than TST based rate for HCO dissociation at 523 K. TST‐based rates are consistent with HREELS observation.

The stability of subsurface 3d transition metals (3d represents Ni, Co, Fe, Mn, Cr, V, and Ti) in Pt(111) and Pt(100) was examined in vacuum and with 0.5 ML atomic oxygen by a combined experimental and density functional theory (DFT) approach. DFT was used to predict the trends in the binding energy of oxygen and in the stability of 3d metals to remain in the subsurface layer. DFT calculations predicted that for both (111) and (100) crystal planes the subsurface Pt-3d-Pt configurations were thermodynamically preferred in vacuum and that the surface 3d-Pt-Pt configurations were preferred with the adsorption of 0.5 ML atomic oxygen. Experimentally, the DFT predictions were verified by using Auger electron spectroscopy to monitor the segregation of Ni and Co in Pt-3d-Pt structures on polycrystalline Pt foil, composed of mainly (111) and (100) facets. The activation barrier for the oxygen-induced segregation of Ni was found to be 17+/-1 kcal/mol attributed to the Pt(111) areas and 27+/-1 kcal/mol attributed to the Pt(100) areas of the Pt foil. For Pt-Co-Pt, the activation barrier was found to be 10+/-1 kcal/mol and was attributed to the Pt(111) areas of the Pt foil. The Bronsted-Evans-Polanyi relationship was utilized to predict the activation barriers for segregation of the other Pt-3d-Pt(111) and Pt-3d-Pt(100) systems. These results are further discussed in connection to the activity and stability for cathode bimetallic electrocatalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells.

In the present article, we report adsorption energies, structures, and vibrational frequencies of CO on Fe(100) for several adsorption states and at three surface coverages. We have performed a full analysis of the vibrational frequencies of CO, thus determining what structures are stable adsorption states and characterizing the transition-state structure for CO dissociation. We have calculated the activation energy of dissociation of CO at 0.25 ML (ML = monolayers) as well as at 0.5 ML; we have studied the dissociation at 0.5 ML to quantify the destabilization effect on the CO(alpha3) molecules when a neighboring CO molecule dissociates. In addition, it is shown that the number and nature of likely adsorption states is coverage dependent. Evidence is presented that shows that the CO molecule adsorbs on Fe(100) at fourfold hollow sites with the molecular axis tilted away from the surface normal by 51.0 degrees. The asorprton energy of the CO molecule is -2.54 eV and the C-O stretching frequency is 1156 cm(-1). This adsorption state corresponds to the alpha3 molecular desorption state reported in temperature programmed desorption (TPD) experiments. However, the activation energy of dissociation of CO(alpha3) molecules at 0.25 ML is only 1.11 eV (approximately 25.60 kcal mol(-1)) and the gain in energy is -1.17 eV; thus, the dissociation of CO is largely favored at low coverages. The activation energy of dissociation of CO at 0.5 ML is 1.18 eV (approximately 27.21 kcal mol(-1)), very similar to that calculated at 0.25 ML. However, the dissociation reaction at 0.5 ML is slightly endothermic, with a total change in energy of 0.10 eV Consequently, molecular adsorption is stabilized with respect to CO dissociation when the CO coverage is increased from 0.25 to 0.5 ML.

The adsorption of 1,1‐diamino‐2,2‐dinitroethylene (FOX‐7) molecule on the Al(111) surface was investigated by the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) of density functional theory (DFT). The calculations employ a supercell (4×4×2) slab model and three‐dimensional periodic boundary conditions. The strong attractive forces between oxygen and aluminum atoms induce the N? O bond breaking of the FOX‐7. Subsequently, the dissociated oxygen atoms and radical fragment of FOX‐7 oxidize the Al surface. The largest adsorption energy is ?940.5 kJ/mol. Most of charge transfer is 3.31e from the Al surface to the fragment of FOX‐7 molecule. We also investigated the adsorption and decomposition mechanism of FOX‐7 molecule on the Al(111) surface. The activation energy for the dissociation steps of P2 con?guration is as large as 428.8 kJ/mol, while activation energies of other con?gurations are much smaller, in range of 2.4 to 147.7 kJ/mol.

The adsorption of H(2)O and its dissociation products, O, H, and OH, on Ag(100) has been studied using an ab initio embedding method. Results at different sites (atop, bridge, and hollow) are presented. The four-fold hollow site is found to be the most stable adsorption site for O, H, and OH, and the calculated adsorption energies are 87.1, 42.7, and 76.2 kcal mol(-1), respectively. The adsorption energy of water at the atop and bridge sites is almost identical with values of 11.1 and 12.0 kcal mol(-1), respectively. The formation of adsorbed OH species by adsorption of water on oxygen-precovered Ag(100) is predicted to be exothermic by 36 kcal mol(-1).

Reaction mechanisms for the interactions between CeO(2)(111) and (110) surfaces are investigated using periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Both standard DFT and DFT+U calculations to examine the effect of the localization of Ce 4f states on the redox chemistry of H(2)-CeO(2) interactions are described. For mechanistic studies, molecular and dissociative local minima are initially located by placing an H(2) molecule at various active sites of the CeO(2) surfaces. The binding energies of physisorbed species optimized using the DFT and DFT+U methods are very weak. The dissociative adsorption reactions producing hydroxylated surfaces are all exothermic; exothermicities at the DFT level range from 4.1 kcal mol(-1) for the (111) to 26.5 kcal mol(-1) for the (110) surface, while those at the DFT+U level are between 65.0 kcal mol(-1) for the (111) and 81.8 kcal mol(-1) for the (110) surface. Predicted vibrational frequencies of adsorbed OH and H(2)O species on the surfaces are in line with available experimental and theoretical results. Potential energy profiles are constructed by connecting molecularly adsorbed and dissociatively adsorbed intermediates on each CeO(2) surface with tight transition states using the nudged elastic band (NEB) method. It is found that the U correction method plays a significant role in energetics, especially for the intermediates of the exit channels and products that are partially reduced. The surface reduction reaction on CeO(2)(110) is energetically much more favorable. Accordingly, oxygen vacancies are more easily formed on the (110) surface than on the (111) surface.

The heat of adsorption of naphthalene on Pt(111) at 300 K was measured with single-crystal adsorption calorimetry. The heat of adsorption on the ideal, defect-free surface is estimated to be (300 - 34 - 199(2)) kJ/mol. From this, a C-Pt bond energy for aromatic hydrocarbons on Pt(111) of approximately 30 kJ/mol is estimated, consistent with earlier results for benzene on Pt(111). There is higher heat of adsorption at very low coverage, attributed to step sites where the adsorption heat is >/=330 kJ/mol. Saturation coverage, = 1 ML, corresponds to 1.55 x 10(14) molecules/cm(2). Sticking probability measurements of naphthalene on Pt(111) give a high initial value of 1.0 and a Kisliuk-type coverage dependence that implies precursor-mediated sticking. The ratio of the hopping rate to the desorption rate of this precursor is approximately 51. Naphthalene adsorbs transiently on top of chemisorbed naphthalene molecules with a heat of adsorption of 83-87 kJ/mol.

Substituent effects have been used to probe the characteristics of the transition state to hydrogenation of alkyl groups on the Pt(111) surface. Eight different alkyl and fluoroalkyl groups have been formed on the Pt(111) surface by dissociative adsorption of their respective alkyl and fluoroalkyl iodides. Coadsorption of hydrogen and alkyl groups, followed by heating of the surface, results in hydrogenation of the alkyl groups to form alkanes, which then desorb into the gas phase. Temperature-programmed reaction spectroscopy was used to measure the barriers to hydrogenation, DeltaE(H)(double dagger), which are dependent on the size of the alkyl group (polarizability) and the degree of fluorination (field effect). This example is one of only two surface reactions for which the influence of the substituents on DeltaE(H)(double dagger) has been correlated with both the field and the polarizability substituent constants of the alkyl groups in the form of a linear free energy relationship. Increasing both the field and the polarizability constants of the alkyl groups increases the value of DeltaE(H)(double dagger). The substituent effects are quantified by a field reaction constant of rho(F) = 27 +/- 4 kJ/mol and a polarizability reaction constant of rho(alpha) = 19 +/- 3 kJ/mol. These suggest that the transition state for hydrogenation is slightly cationic with respect to the alkyl group on the Pt(111) surface, RC + H <--> {RC(delta+)...H}(double dagger).

The interactions of Na(+) and Ag(+) cations with an Ag(111) surface in the presence and absence of water molecules were investigated with cluster models and ab initio methods. The Ag surface was described with two-layered Ag(10) and Ag(18) cluster models, and MP2/RECP/6-31+G(d) was used as the computational method. The effect of the basis set superposition error (BSSE) was taken into account with counterpoise (CP) correction. The interactions between Na(+) and Ag(111) surface were found to be primarily electrostatic, and the interaction energies and equilibrium distances at the different adsorption sites were closely similar. The largest CP-corrected MP2 adsorption energy for Na(+) was -190.2 kJ/mol. Owing to the electrostatic nature of the Na(+)-Ag(111) interaction, Na(+) prefers to be completely surrounded by water molecules rather than directly adsorbed to the surface. Ag(+)-Ag(111) interactions were much stronger than Na(+)-Ag(111) interactions because they were dominated by orbital contributions. The largest CP-corrected MP2 adsorption energy for Ag(+) was -358.9 kJ/mol. Ag(+) prefers to adsorb on sites where it can bind to several surface atoms, and in the presence of water molecules, it remains adsorbed to the surface while the water molecules form hydrogen bonds with one another. The CP correction had an effect on the interaction energies but did not change the relative trends.
