The bulk etch rate for two types of CR-39 detector was measured as a function of temperature and the activation energies of bulk etching was determined. Experimental values of track etch rate were derived directly from the function of the succesive measured track length vrs. etching time for 209Bi, 129Xe and 20Ne ions.

The maximum etchable length of 13 MeV/u 209Bi and 13.04 MeV/u 129Xe ions have been measured at and below these energies. A comparison of the measured and calculated track length data is presented.  相似文献

It has been well established that different ionising radiations modify the track registration properties of dielectric solids. In an effort to study the response of Polyallyl diglycol carbonate (PADC Homalite) detector towards fission fragment, PADC detectors were exposed to 104 Gy dose of 62 MeV protons and then one set of samples were exposed to fission fragments from a 252Cf source. Two of these detectors were containing a thin layer of Buckminsterfullerene (C60). The study of the etched tracks by Leitz Optical Microscope reveals that the track diameters are enhanced by more than 70% in the proton irradiated zone as compared to that in the unirradiated zone. Scanning Electron Microscopy was performed after etching the sample in 6 N NaOH at 55°C for different etching times, to study the details of the surface modifications due to proton irradiation of PADC detectors with and without C60 layer. Our observations revealed that the diameters and density of proton tracks have increased with etching time on the surface facing the fullerene layer as well as the other surface. However, a relatively more open structure of the etched surface containing C60 as compared to the bare one may be an indication of the extra damage caused by the energy released upon the destruction of C60 molecules by energetic protons.  相似文献

The quartz glass open chromatographic columns with thermal gradient, which usually were used for the investigation of chemical properties of short-lived Z104 nuclides, were first used as the track detectors of spontaneously fissioning isotopes of elements 104, 105 and 106. The recoil nuclei of these elements were captured by the flow of gaseous chlorides then go to the quartz tube with reducing thermal gradient 400°C-100°C. The quartz tube was etched in 40% HF. The tracks due to spontaneous fission of isotopes 259104, 262105 and 263106 which were etched at the internal wall of quartz tubes were counted under optical microscope.  相似文献

Experimental studies of the slowing down of 1H, 4He, 7Li, 11B, 12C, 14N, 16O, 23Na, 27Al and 28Si ions in CR-39 nuclear track etch material in the ion energy range 0.25–2.8 MeV/u are presented. The ion stopping powers obtained are compared to the predictions of two recent semiempirical models for calculating ion stopping powers. The predictions are found to clearly underestimate the observed stopping powers for 7Li, 11B, 12C, 23Na, 27Al and 28Si ions.  相似文献

There is considerable current interest in the detection of high energy nucleons around accelerators, spallation sources, and in cosmic rays. A detector that has its principal response at nucleon-energy above 50 MeV is provided by the fission of Bi-209. The problem of limited sensitivity has been solved by: a) spark counting large detector areas, b) reducing the detector background by special counting procedures, c) using many replicates of a thin track detector between two 209Bi-radiators. Finally, the registration efficiency has been evaluated and determined experimentally using proton beams with energies of 100, 150, and 250 MeV.  相似文献

Irradiating polymer films with heavy ions and subsequent electrolytically controlled etching (ECE) produces nuclear track filters with desired pore dimensions and pore density. During ECE, an electric field with low field strength and a frequency in the audio range is applied across the irradiated polymer film, which is immersed in the etching solution. An ECE cell for the simultaneous etching of three irradiated samples has been designed and developed. The average pore diameter and break-through time for tracks due to 238U(11.4 and 14 MeV/u) and 209Bi(13 MeV/u) ions in polycarbonate and polyethylene terepthalate have been measured.  相似文献

The cross-sections for fission of 209Bi induced by secondary beams of 6He by 4He and 7Li were measured. For the registration of fission fragments polyterephtalate plastic and muscovite mica detectors were used. In the case of the reaction of helium ions with bismuth the cross-section of the fission of 209Bi induced by 6He are significantly higher than the corresponding -particle-induced fission cross-section.  相似文献

Tracks of 49 MeV 35Cl ions in muscovite mica were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy up to 10 Å resolution applying the track replica method. The enlargement of the track diameter is measured as a function of etching time. The track shape evolution shows circular tracks for very short etching times. By increasing the etching time the tracks gradually become ovals. For longer etching times, tracks show the characteristic rhombic shape of the bulk region. A non monotonous decrease of the track velocity vs. radius is reported. Formation of a low velocity shell in the intermediate region between the central amorphous zone and the non-perturbed crystalline lattice is suggested.  相似文献

By the method of electrolytical etching track etching rates Vt and corresponding transversal track etching rates Vtrans of single heavy ion tracks in thin Makrofol KG foils have been measured at ion energies from 10–480 MeV/u. Makrofol KG foils of 8 μm thickness were irradiated perpendicular to the surface with 79Au and 54Xe ions at specific energies with energy loss values of REL=(10–90) *103 MeVcm2/g at GSI Darmstadt, Germany, and Lawrence Berkeley Lab., Cal., USA. Using the electrolytical etching method by measuring the resistance of the foil during the etching process (etching conditions: 6n NaOH, room temperature and controlled 50° C) the breakthrough time and track etching rates Vt, Vtrans and Vm (bulk etching rate) were analysed. Response curves (Vt/Vm)-1 as a function of Restricted Energy Loss (REL), the maximum extension of the ion induced damage perpendicular to the ion path and the dimension of the ion track core depending on the deposited energy can be estimated.  相似文献

The automatic image analysis system for scanning solid state nuclear track detectors is designed by utilizing a microdensitometer. The control of the entire system as well as the data analysis are accomplished with the IBM PC computer equipped with a FrameGrabber. The system counts the number of tracks and measures their geometrical parameters. The usage of the system is illustrated by counting rhombic tracks in mica detectors which were used for the investigation of the fusion–fission reaction 12C+ 208Pb.  相似文献

Computation of etched track profiles needs the knowledge of the variable track etch rates along the ion trajectories. Using the depth-dependent track etch rates experimentally determined for perpendicularly incident protons, deuterons and alpha particles as well as 7Li, 11B, 12C, 14N and 16O ions of different energies simulations of the track development were performed. Two models of track etching were applied for that purpose recently published in literature. Although the models are based on the same physical fundamentals the results are slightly different. The reasons of the discrepancies were found by analysing the algorithms in detail. Comparison of the calculated track profiles with those determined experimentally from longitudinal sections of the etch pits showed good agreement for non-overetched as well as overetched tracks. The consistency of the whole experimental data set was checked by analysing the correlation of the track etch rates with geometric track parameters for all kinds of ions and etching times covered by the experiments.  相似文献

The olivine crystals from lunar regolith samples taken by the Soviet unmanned spacecrafts Luna-16 and Luna-24 were investigated. Eleven 0.5 –1.0 mm size olivine crystals were mounted in epoxy, polished and then etched in modified WO4 solution. The Fe-group track densities up to 108 tracks.cm−2 (Fe-group) were measured under optical microscope. The tracks of length greater than 30 microns due to Z ≥ 36 cosmic ray nuclei are counted for VVH tracks density for all the crystals. The VVH / VH track densities ratio for these lunar olivine crystals varies from 1.25×10−4 to 2×10−3. It corresponds to the averaged depth of these crystals in lunar soil of 2–8 cm during galactic cosmic ray exposure. Lunar crystals are well suited for VVH track studies due to a very high track density. Two crystals were annealed at 430°C for 32 hrs. This procedure eliminates iron group tracks completely and leaves etchable tracks of nuclei with Z 50 even in the olivine crystals with Fe-group tracks up to 1–2×108 tracks cm−2. We were able to measure two tracks with the length 195 and 210μm which were produced by Th---U group of Galactic cosmic ray nuclei.  相似文献

As a frame work of the study for the latent track size measurement using atomic force microscope, we have measured the minute etch pits and the extremely small amount of bulk etch of CR-39 at the beginning of chemical etching, and obtained its growth curves in nanometer dimensions. The pieces of CR-39 were exposed to 6 MeV/nC and Fe ions with normal incidence angle and were etched in 70°C 7 N NaOH solution for 0.5,1,2,3,5 min. The diameters of latent track were estimated to be 17 nm for Fe ions and 8 nm for C ions, respectively. These values are comparable to the experimental data on the average ‘track core diameters’ that have been obtained by various experimental techniques.  相似文献

Samples of CR-39, PM-355, and PM-500 plastic detectors were irradiated with carbon ions of energy ranging from 0.9 MeV to 14.7 MeV. After the irradiation the detector samples were etched for a period from 2 hrs to 10 hrs. Dependence of track diameters on the ion energy values for different etching times, and dependence of VT/VB as a function of incident carbon-ion energy, are presented.  相似文献

Magnesium aluminum spinel (MgAl2O4) is a material selected as a possible matrix for transmutation of minor actinides by neutron capture or fission in nuclear reactors. To study the radiation stability of this inert matrix, especially against fission product impact, irradiations with heavy energetic ions or clusters have been performed. The high electronic energy losses of the heavy ions in this material led to the formation of visible tracks as evidenced by transmission electron microscopy for 30 MeV C60-Buckminster fullerenes and for ions of energy close to or higher than fission energy (209Bi with 120 MeV and 2.38 GeV energy). The irradiations at high energies showed a pronounced degradation of the spinel. Additionally, MgAl2O4 exhibited a large swelling for irradiation at high fluences with fission products of fission energy (here I-ions of 72 MeV) and at temperatures ≤ 500 °C. These observations are discussed from the technological point of view in the frame of using MgAl2O4 as an inert matrix for the transmutation of minor actinides.  相似文献

Using CR-39 plastic track detectors the range values of 16O ions at two different energies (initially in the beam line, 39.97 MeV/n and 69.98 MeV/n) were measured after escaping the beam pipe and found to be (3050 ± 40) μm and (8210 ± 90) μm, respectively. The longitudinal and projected angular spread of oxygen ions of an initial energy of 69.98 MeV/n in the region of the Bragg peak was derived from the measured geometrical parameters of tracks. Based on a calibration curve (etch rate ratio vs total linear energy transfer in CR-39) and the measured track length distribution at the range end of oxygen ions, the complete depth dose profile of a 67.7 MeV/n 16O beam in CR-39 (plateau, extended Bragg peak and residual ionization caused by projectile like fragments) was obtained.  相似文献

The features of the latent track in polycarbonate can be analysed by measuring the diffusion constant under ultra high vacuum conditions. Stacks of 30 μm Makrofol KG foils were irradiated with uranium ions of 11.4 MeV/u at the GSI Darmstadt, Germany. We used different fluences from 3·1010 to 5·1011 ions/cm2. The diffusion constant was determined by the time-lag-method [1]. A quadrupole mass filter was used to observe the diffusion of the gas. We measured the diffusion of argon through different foils of each stack at room temperature. In all cases also unirradiated foils were measured. The dependence of the permeability and the diffusion constant on the ion fluence and the energy loss of the ions will be given and indications on the size of latent ion tracks concerning gas diffusion will be discussed.  相似文献

In the present work a comparative study of track registration response of 40Ar ions in different types of Makrofol polycarbonates viz. Makrofol-KG, KL & N have been done. The etched track parameters viz. bulk etch rate, track etch rate, etch rate ratio, cone angle and etching efficiency were calculated. The variation of etching rates with temperature were found to be exponential and follow the Arrhenius equation. The values of activation energy for bulk and track etching were also calculated. Maximum etchable track length/range were also obtained and compared with the theoretical values obtained from computer program RANGE. From the results it is found that the polycarbonates having same chemical composition manufactured by different chemical processes have slightly different behavior.  相似文献

Samples made of the CR-39 and PM-355 plastic nuclear track detectors (NTDs) as well as of the CN films were irradiated with quasi-monoenergetic beams of protons, alphas, N+-, and O+-ions produced by various accelerators. For different samples an energy value of the particle beams was changed from several hundreds keV to 3 or 4.5 MeV. After irradiation the detector samples were etched chemically under controlled conditions during periods lasting from 2 hrs to 20 hrs. Every 2 hrs track diameters were measured by means of an optical microscope. Differences in the crater diameters in the detectors etched in steps, and those etched continously, have been found to be smaller than 10 percent. The paper results detailed calibration diagrams showing a dependence of track diameters on the ion energy value for different etching times.  相似文献

The investigation of the track etching velocity dependence for nuclei with Z50 on pH of the etching solution in the olivine crystals from Marjalahti and Eagle Station meteorites, containing galactic cosmic-ray nuclear tracks and also the crystals from Marjalahti meteorite, calibrated at the UNILAC (GSI, Darmstadt) with 14.17 MeV/N 208Pb nuclei, were performed.

The pH of the etching solution were changed from 7.8 to 9.4. It is shown that the optimal track etch condition were realised at pH of etching solution in the interval from 8.4 to 8.8.

The results of the Galactic cosmic-ray nuclei tracks with Z83 revealed in olivine crystals are presented. They were additionally irradiated at 90% to the surface with accelerated 14 MeV/N 132Xe nuclei.  相似文献
