We present a study on the catalytic activity of platinum nanoparticles immobilized on spherical polyelectrolyte brushes that act as carriers. The spherical polyelectrolyte brushes consist of a solid core of poly(styrene) onto which long chains of poly(2-methylpropenoyloxyethyl) trimethylammonium chloride are grafted. These positively charged chains form a dense layer of polyelectrolytes on the surface of the core particles ("spherical polyelectrolyte brush") that tightly binds divalent PtCl6-(2) ions. The reduction of these ions within the brush layer leads to nearly monodisperse nanoparticles of metallic platinum. The average size of the particles is approximately 2 nm. The composite particles exhibit excellent colloidal stability. The catalytic activity is investigated by photometrically monitoring the reduction of p-nitrophenol by an excess of NaBH4 in the presence of the nanoparticles. The kinetic data could be explained by the assumption of a pseudo-first-order reaction with regard to p-nitrophenol. In all cases, a delay time t0 has been observed, after which the reactions start. This time is shorter when the catalyst has already been used. All data demonstrate that spherical polyelectrolyte brushes present an ideal carrier system for metallic nanoparticles.  相似文献

The effects of both anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS) and cationic (dodecylpyridine bromide, DPB) surfactants on the phase transition of narrowly distributed poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) microgel particles were investigated by laser light scattering. The addition of SDS swells the particles and increases the phase transition temperature, while DPB has a much smaller effect. This difference cannot be due to an association between the surfactant hydrophobic tail and PNIPAM because DPB and SDS have an identical hydrophobic tail. The amide groups in PNIPAM are slightly protonized in deionized water (pH ∼ 5.5). Our results contradict a previous prediction that oppositely charged surfactants will collapse a polyelectrolyte gel. After adding SDS, a two-step phase transition of the PNIPAM gel is observed. This suggests that SDS forms micelles inside the microgel with the help of the immobilized counter ions on the gel network. The SDS micelles are broken into individual SDS molecules in the first step of phase transition, while in the second step individual SDS molecules are gradually expelled. Surfactant effects on the microgel particles are compared with those of individual PNIPAM chains. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

We use Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectroscopy to study the thermal unfolding and refolding behavior of ribonuclease (RNase A) adsorbed to spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPB). The SPB consist of a solid poly(styrene) core of ca. 100 nm diameter onto which long chains of poly(styrene sulfonic acid), PSS have been densely attached. The particles bearing the adsorbed protein are dispersed in aqueous buffer solution at a pH close to the isoelectric point (9.6) of the protein. The secondary structure of the protein was analyzed by FT-IR spectroscopy and compared to the structure of the native protein before adsorption. The unfolding of the free RNase A in solution was found to be fully reversible with an unfolding temperature of 65 degrees C, in accordance to previous studies. However, after adsorption to the SPB, the unfolding temperature of the protein molecule is lowered by 10 degrees C and the Van't Hoff enthalpy of the unfolding process is significantly reduced. Moreover the unfolding of the adsorbed protein is irreversible. The phenomenon may be explained by an increase in binding sites due to unfolding of the globular structure. The layer by layer deposition process of polyelectrolytes is used to construct films equipped with several compartments containing "free polyelectrolytes". Each compartment corresponds to a stratum of an exponentially growing polyelectrolyte multilayer film, and two consecutive compartments are separated by a stratum composed of a linearly growing multilayer that acts as a barrier preventing polyelectrolyte diffusion from one compartment to another. We use hyaluronic acid/poly(L-lysine) as the system to build the compartments and the poly(styrene sulfonate)/poly(allylamine) system for the barrier. Using confocal microscopy, it is shown that poly(L-lysine) diffuses only within the compartment in which it was initially introduced during the film construction and is thus unable to cross the barriers. Using fluorescein isothiocyanate as a pH indicator, it is also shown that although poly(styrene sulfonate)/poly(allylamine) multilayers act as a barrier for polyelectrolytes, they do not prevent proton diffusion through the film. Such films open the route for multiple functionalization of biomaterial coatings.  相似文献

Summary Herein, we report that different core-shell particles could be successfully used as the carrier systems for the deposition of silver nanoparticles. Firstly, thermosensitive core-shell microgel particles have been used as the carrier system for the deposition of Ag nanoparticles, in which the core consists of poly (styrene) (PS) whereas the shell consists of poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) network cross-linked by N, N′-methylenebisacrylamide (BIS). Immersed in water the shell of these particles is swollen. Heating the suspension above 32 °C leads to a volume transition within the shell, which is followed by a marked shrinking of the network of the shell. Secondly, “nano-tree” type polymer brush can be used as “nanoreactor” for the generation of silver nanoparticles also. This kind of carrier particles consists of a solid core of PS onto which bottlebrush chains synthesized by the macromonomer poly (ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGMA) are affixed by “grafting from” technique. Thirdly, silver nanoparticles can be in-situ immobilized onto polystyrene (PS) core-polyacrylic acid (PAA) polyelectrolyte brush particles by UV irradiation. Monodisperse Ag nanoparticles with diameter of 8.5 nm, 7.5 nm and 3 nm can be deposited into thermosensitive microgels, “nano-tree” type polymer brushes and polyelectrolyte brush particles, respectively. Moreover, obtained silver nano-composites show different catalytic activity for the catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol depending on the carrier system used for preparation.  相似文献

The analysis of spherical polyelectrolyte brushes by anomalous small‐angle X‐ray scattering (ASAXS) is considered. The particles under consideration consist of a solid poly(styrene) core onto which chains of poly(acrylic acid) are grafted. If Rubidium ions are chosen as counterions, ASAXS can be applied to the study of these systems because the absorption edge of Rb (15199.6eV) can be reached by synchrotron radiation. Here we discuss the results to be obtained by the application of ASAXS to spherical polyelectrolyte brushes.  相似文献

Hollow polyelectrolyte microcapsules made of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) and sodium poly(styrene sulfonate), templated on various cores, manganese and calcium carbonate particles or polystyrene latexes, were investigated. The polyelectrolyte multilayers respond to a change of pH, leading to a swelling of the capsules in basic conditions and a further shrinking when the pH is reduced to acidic. The nature of the core and the subsequent dissolution process have an influence on this pH responsiveness, and the structuring effect of tetrahydrofuran on the multilayers has been demonstrated. Increasing the molecular weight of the polymers or the number of layers causes also a rigidification of the structure and modifies the pH response.  相似文献

A new approach to fabricate polyelectrolyte microcapsules is based on exploiting porous inorganic microparticles of calcium carbonate. Porous CaCO3 microparticles (4.5-5.0 microns) were synthesized and characterized by scanning electron microscopy and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method of nitrogen adsorption/desorption to get a surface area of 8.8 m2/g and an average pore size of 35 nm. These particles were used as templates for polyelectrolyte layer-by-layer assembly of two oppositely charged polyelectrolytes, poly(styrene sulfonate) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride). Calcium carbonate core dissolution resulted in formation ofpolyelectrolyte microcapsules with an internal matrix consisting of a polyelectrolyte complex. Microcapsules with an internal matrix were analyzed by confocal Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, force microscopy, and confocal laser-scanning fluorescence microscopy. The structure was found to be dependent on a number of polyelectrolyte adsorption treatments. Capsules have a very high loading capacity for macromolecules, which can be incorporated into the capsules by capturing them from the surrounding medium into the capsules. In this paper, we investigated the loading by dextran and bovine serum albumin as macromolecules. The amount of entrapped macromolecules was determined by two independent methods and found to be up to 15 pg per microcapsule.  相似文献

The formation of a complex between an anionic spherical polyelectrolyte brush (SPB) and the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) is investigated. The SPB consists of long chains of the strong polyelectrolyte poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS), which are bound chemically to a solid poly(styrene) core of 56 nm in radius. The SPB are dispersed in water, and the ionic strength is adjusted by addition of NaBr. The resulting complexes are investigated in dilute solution by dynamic light scattering, by electrophoretic light scattering, and by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). The formation of the complex between the SPB and the surfactant can be monitored by a strong shrinking of the surface layer when adding CTAB to dilute suspensions (0.01 wt %) and by a decrease of the effective charge of the complexes. Complex formation starts at CTAB concentrations lower than the critical micelle concentration of this surfactant. If the ratio r of the charges on the SPB to the charge of the added surfactant is exceeding unity, the particles start to flocculate. Cryo-TEM images of the complexes at r = 0.6 measured in salt-free solution show that the surface layer composed of the PSS chains and the adsorbed CTAB molecules is partially collapsed: A part of the chains form a dense surface layer while another part of the chains or aggregates thereof are still sticking out. This can be deduced from the cryo-TEM micrographs as well as from the hydrodynamic radius, which is still of appreciable magnitude. The 1:1 complex (r = 1.0) exhibits a fully collapsed layer formed by the PSS chains and CTAB. If the complex is formed in the presence of 0.05 M NaBr, r = 0.6 leads to globular structures directly attached to the surface of the core particles. All structures seen in the cryo-TEM images can be explained by a collapse transition of the surface layer brought about by the hydrophobic attraction between the polyelectrolyte chains that became partially hydrophobic through adsorption of CTAB.  相似文献

Interpolyelectrolyte complex (IPEC) formation between poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) has been studied over a range of ionic strengths by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), turbidity titration, and electrostatic layer-by-layer assembly (ELBL). The results indicate that IPEC formation of PSS/PAH in aqueous solution is predominantly entropy-driven. The thermodynamic parameters suggest the formation of different types of complexes and aggregates due to salt-induced conformational changes in the polyelectrolyte conformation. Differences in polyelectrolyte behavior in the different salt-concentration regimes are described in terms of changes in the Debye screening length of the polyelectrolytes. The relationship of the results to the effect of salt concentration on the assembly of polyelectrolyte multilayer films (PEMs) is discussed.  相似文献

The effect of ultrasonic treatments of different intensity and duration on the integrity and permeability of polyelectrolyte capsules was investigated both in poly(allylamine)/poly(styrene sulfonate) and Fe(3)O(4)/poly(allylamine)/poly(styrene sulfonate) polyelectrolyte capsules. Ultrasonic treatment of polyelectrolyte capsules induces the destruction of the polyelectrolyte shell and the release of the encapsulated material even at short (5 s) sonification times. The presence of magnetite nanoparticles significantly improves the efficiency of the ultrasonically stimulated release of the encapsulated compounds and enables magnetically controlled delivery to the desired site before ultrasonic treatment. Release of the encapsulated compound induced at ultrasonic power comparable to those of ultrasonic generators applied in medicine, demonstrating practical application of the ultrasonically triggered capsule opening in medicine.  相似文献

Different approaches for the synthesis of binary polyelectrolyte/inorganic layered composite capsules of micron size are described. As the polyelectrolyte part of the composite, a poly(styrene sulfonate)/poly(allylamine hydrochloride) complex was taken; the inorganic component was composed of magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4, CoFe2O4, MnFe2O4, ZnFe2O4), insulator nanoparticles (rare-earth fluorides) or metal nanoparticles (Ag). An inner inorganic layer was formed inside the hollow polyelectrolyte capsule via chemical or photochemical reaction in a spatially restricted capsule volume. The inorganic nanophase synthesized was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and wide angle X-ray scattering techniques and weakly crystallized particles 6–9 nm in diameter were detected, presumably attached to the inner side of the capsule shell. Polyelectrolyte capsules filled with ferrite (magnetite) particles possess substantial magnetic activity and are easily manipulated in water solution by an external magnetic field.  相似文献

Hydrodynamic size and charge of polyelectrolyte complexes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Polyelectrolyte complexes have a wide range of applications for surface modification and flocculation and sorption of organic molecules from solutions. As an example, complexes between poly(diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride) and poly(styrene sulfonate) have been investigated by diffusion and electrophoresis NMR. The formation of primary or soluble complexes is monitored. The hydrodynamic size is characterized by the hydrodynamic radius, calculated from the diffusion coefficient determined by pulsed field gradient NMR. In the combination with electrophoresis NMR, the effective charge of the molecules and complexes is determined. The hydrodynamic size of the primary complex is smaller than that of the pure polyelectrolyte of the larger molecular weight, in the present case poly(styrene sulfonate), in solution, since charges are compensated by the oppositely charged polyelectrolyte and hence the repelling forces diminish. The effective charge of the complexes is drastically reduced.  相似文献

The adsorption of poly(vinylamine) (PVA) on poly(styrene sulfate) latex particles is studied, and its consequences on the charging behavior and suspension stability are investigated. The adsorption process is assessed by batch depletion experiments and time-resolved electrophoretic mobility measurements. The adsorption of PVA appears to be basically irreversible. The rate of adsorption decreases with decreasing polymer dose. At low polymer dose, the polymer coverage corresponds to the amount of the polyelectrolyte added, while at high polymer dose, the polymer coverage saturates the surface. Stability ratios are determined by dynamic light scattering, and strongly depend on the polymer dose and salt level. The aggregation is rapid near the isoelectric point (IEP), and it slows down when moving away from it. The charge neutralization is highly nonstoichiometric with charging ratios (CR) larger than unity, meaning that several charges on an adsorbed polyelectrolyte chain are necessary to neutralize a single charge on the particle surface. By comparing the IEP for particles and polyelectrolytes of different charge densities, we find a strong dependence of the CR on the mismatch between the average distances between individual charges on the surface and on the polyelectrolyte. A simple model is proposed to explain this trend.  相似文献

The formation of polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) is investigated using a silicon-on-insulator based thin film resistor which is sensitive to variations of the surface potential. The buildup of the PEMs at the silicon oxide surface of the device can be observed in real time as defined potential shifts. The influence of polymer charge density is studied using the strong polyanion poly(styrene sulfonate), PSS, combined with the statistical copolymer poly(diallyl-dimethyl-ammoniumchloride-stat-N-methyl-N-vinylacetamide), P(DADMAC-stat-NMVA), at various degrees of charge (DC). The multilayer formation stops after a few deposition steps for a DC below 75%. We show that the threshold of surface charge compensation corresponds to the threshold of multilayer formation. However, no reversion of the preceding surface charge was observed. Screening of polyelectrolyte charges by mobile ions within the polymer film leads to a decrease of the potential shifts with the number of layers deposited. This decrease is much slower for PEMs consisting of P(DADMAC-stat-NMVA) and PSS as compared to PEMs consisting of poly(allylamine-hydrochloride), PAH, and PSS. From this, significant differences in the dielectric constants of the polyelectrolyte films and in the concentration of mobile ions within the films can be derived.  相似文献

The introduction of poly(ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT)/poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) polyelectrolyte into giant unilamellar phospholipid vesicles (GUVs) and cross-linking with Ca2+ ions to generate a hydrogel within the internal compartment are reported. The aqueous colloidal suspension of PEDOT with excess PSS was microinjected into the internal compartment of liposomes as well as networks of GUVs and lipid nanotubes. The subsequent introduction of calcium ions as cross-linking agent in order to induce hydrogel formation was achieved by three different methods: vesicle fusion, electroporation, and direct microinjection. Gel formation was probed by coinjection of fluorescent nanoparticles and tracking of Brownian motion. Particle mobility was shown to be distinctly reduced in the gel-filled vesicles. Diffusion constants for the particles were calculated from the projected movement of the particles and compared to particles in reference gels and solutions.  相似文献

The affinity of weak polyelectrolyte coated oxide particles to the oil-water interface can be controlled by the degree of dissociation and the thickness of the weak polyelectrolyte layer. Thereby the oil in water (o/w) emulsification ability of the particles can be enabled. We selected the weak polyacid poly(methacrylic acid sodium salt) and the weak polybase poly(allylamine hydrochloride) for the surface modification of oppositely charged alumina and silica colloids, respectively. The isoelectric point and the pH range of colloidal stability of both particle-polyelectrolyte composites depend on the thickness of the weak polyelectrolyte layer. The pH-dependent wettability of a weak polyelectrolyte-coated oxide surface is characterized by contact angle measurements. The o/w emulsification properties of both particles for the nonpolar oil dodecane and the more polar oil diethylphthalate are investigated by measurements of the droplet size distributions. Highly stable emulsions can be obtained when the degree of dissociation of the weak polyelectrolyte is below 80%. Here the average droplet size depends on the degree of dissociation, and a minimum can be found when 15 to 45% of the monomer units are dissociated. The thickness of the adsorbed polyelectrolyte layer strongly influences the droplet size of dodecane/water emulsion droplets but has a less pronounced impact on the diethylphthalate/water droplets. We explain the dependency of the droplet size on the emulsion pH value and the polyelectrolyte coating thickness with arguments based on the particle-wetting properties, the particle aggregation state, and the oil phase polarity. Cryo-SEM visualization shows that the regularity of the densely packed particles on the oil-water interface correlates with the degree of dissociation of the corresponding polyelectrolyte.  相似文献

A strategy to incorporate and release anti-cancer drugs of daunorubicin (DNR) and doxorubicin (DOX) in preformed microcapsules is introduced, which is based on charge interaction mechanism. Oppositely charged poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) were assembled onto PSS doped-CaCO3 colloidal particles in a layer-by-layer manner to yield core-shell particles. After removal of the carbonate cores, hollow microcapsules with entrapped PSS were fabricated, which showed spontaneous loading ability of positively charged DNR and DOX. The drug loading was confirmed quantitatively by observations under confocal laser scanning microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and scanning force microscopy. Quantification of the drug loading was performed under different conditions, revealing that a larger amount of drugs could be incorporated at higher drug feeding concentrations and higher salt concentrations. However, putting additional polyelectrolyte layers on the microcapsules after core removal resulted in weaker drug loading efficiency. The drug release behaviors from the microcapsules with different layer numbers were studied too, revealing a diffusion controlled release mechanism at the initial stage (4 h).  相似文献

Self-exchange of isotopically labeled polycarboxylic acid within a polyelectrolyte multilayer proceeds to completion and is reversible. Similar exchange with poly(styrene sulfonate), which forms nonlabile polyelectrolyte complexes, is slow and irreversible but is facilitated by polyvalent ion pairing interventions of a third polyelectrolyte. This is an example of accelerated kinetics in "sticky" synthetic systems associated by nonspecific polyvalent interactions.  相似文献
