The mechanism of drag reduction in turbulent flows due to polymers has been investigated with help of a direct numerical simulation. In particular, we consider the interaction between turbulent velocity fluctuations and polymers in terms of elastic energy that can be stored in the polymer. To this end all the terms of the elastic energy budget have been computed. The most interesting term is the production of elastic energy due to turbulent fluctuations, because it describes the interaction between polymers and turbulence. Although this term appears to be small in the average, it turns out that it can reach very large values instantaneously and intermittently, and the energy transfer from polymer to turbulence is located in very well defined areas inside the channel. This implies that locally there is a strong interaction between the polymer and the turbulent flow structure, and this strong interaction is mostly seen in areas of high velocity fluctuations.  相似文献

In this paper we report on (two-component) LDV experiments in a fully developed turbulent pipe flow with a drag-reducing polymer (partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide) dissolved in water. The Reynolds number based on the mean velocity, the pipe diameter and the local viscosity at the wall is approximately 10000. We have used polymer solutions with three different concentrations which have been chosen such that maximum drag reduction occurs. The amount of drag reduction found is 60–70%. Our experimental results are compared with results obtained with water and with a very dilute solution which exhibits only a small amount of drag reduction. We have focused on the observation of turbulence statistics (mean velocities and turbulence intensities) and on the various contributions to the total shear stress. The latter consists of a turbulent, a solvent (viscous) and a polymeric part. The polymers are found to contribute significantly to the total stress. With respect to the mean velocity profile we find a thickening of the buffer layer and an increase in the slope of the logarithmic profile. With respect to the turbulence statistics we find for the streamwise velocity fluctuations an increase of the root mean square at low polymer concentration but a return to values comparable to those for water at higher concentrations. The root mean square of the normal velocity fluctuations shows a strong decrease. Also the Reynolds (turbulent) shear stress and the correlation coefficient between the stream wise and the normal components are drastically reduced over the entire pipe diameter. In all cases the Reynolds stress stays definitely non-zero at maximum drag reduction. The consequence of the drop of the Reynolds stress is a large polymer stress, which can be 60% of the total stress. The kinetic-energy balance of the mean flow shows a large transfer of energy directly to the polymers instead of the route by turbulence. The kinetic energy of the turbulence suggests a possibly negative polymeric dissipation of turbulent energy. In this article a parametric study based on a balance between viscous drag and restoring Brownian forces is used in order to construct a nonlinear dumbbell model with a finite spring and a drag correction for a dilute polymer solution. The constitutive equations used are reasonable approximation for describing flows of very dilute polymer solutions such as those used in turbulent drag reduction. We investigate the response of an elastic liquid under extensional flows in order to explore the roles of a stress anisotropy and of elasticity in strong flows. It is found that for low Reynolds numbers, the extensional viscosity of a dilute polymer solution is governed by two parameters: a Deborah number representing the importance of the elasticity on the flow and the macromolecule extensibility that accounts for the viscous anisotropic effects caused by the macromolecule orientation. Two different asymptotic regimes are described.The first corresponds to an elastic limit in which the extensional viscosity is a function of the Deborah number and the particle volume fraction. The second is an anisotropic regime with the extensional viscosity independent of Deborah number but strongly dependent on macromolecule aspect ratio. The analysis may explain from a phenomenological point of view why few ppms of macromolecules of high molecule weight or a small volume fraction of long fibres produce important attenuation of the pressure drop in turbulent flows. On the basis of our analysis it is seen that the anisotropic limit of the extensional viscosity caused by extended polymers under strong flows should play a key role in the attenuation of flow instability and in the mechanism of drag reduction by polymer additives.  相似文献

A novel eddy viscosity model for predicting friction drag reduction induced by polymers in turbulent wall-bounded flows is presented. The approach is based on the elliptic relaxation model modified to account for the modified Reynolds-stress equilibrium established by the presence of elastic polymer chains in the fluid. The increased wall damping of the turbulent fluctuations is obtained by modifying the pressure–strain redistribution term. Polymer solutions are represented using the Finite Extensibility Non-linear elastic FENE-P dumbbell model; only one transport equation for the elongation of the polymer chains is considered. The model reproduces the level of drag reduction observed over a wide range of rheological parameters. In addition, both the mean velocity and the turbulent fluctuations are predicted with good accuracy. The approach is computationally attractive because of its limited increase in computational cost in comparison with its Newtonian counterpart.  相似文献

添加剂湍流减阻是指在液体的管道湍流中添加少量的高分子聚合物或某种表面活性剂从而使湍流阻力大大降低的现象.从其被发现至今,经过近半个世纪的研究(实验研究、理论分析、数值模拟和实际系统的应用研究),尽管对这一现象及其实际应用价值已有了较为深入的认识,但仍有许多方面尚有欠缺,例如对湍流减阻的机理仍然在探索中.本文归纳评述了高分子聚合物或表面活性剂添加剂湍流减阻流动与换热现象的研究现状,从湍流减阻剂的特性、减阻剂的湍流减阻机理、湍流减阻发生时的换热机理、减阻流动速度场分布和换热控制等几个方面综述了添加剂湍流减阻流动与换热特性,并综述了湍流减阻剂在实际工业系统中的应用情况,在对添加剂湍流减阻机理、有湍流减阻发生时的对流换热机理等的理解方面进行了新的总结.   相似文献

This experimental study compares the mean and turbulence characteristics of turbulent channel flows with polymer injection at the wall and at the centerline to assess the impact of the injection location on drag reduction. It also contrasts the drag reduction performance of a hydrolyzed polymer versus a non-ionic polymer under the same conditions. Wall injection of non-ionic and hydrolized polymers resulted in 23% and 9% larger drag reduction than corresponding centerline injection, respectively. In all cases, the polymer was structured and the presence of macromolecular polymer structures, even when concentrated mostly away from the wall, seemed to be able to affect the turbulence structure in the flow.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the performance of flush mounted hot-film sensors for mean wall shear stress measurement in turbulent flows of dilute drag reducing polymer solution. A series of pipe flow expriments were conducted over a range of Reynolds numbers and polymer solution concentrations to compare the level of skin friction drag reduction measured by hot-film sensors with values calculated from pipe pressure drop. It is shown that water calibrated hot-film sensors consistently underestimate the wall shear stress suggesting that Reynolds analogy is not valid in dilute polymer solutions. The Newtonian form of the relationship between the wall shear stress and the heat transfer remains valid in dilute polymer solutions. However, multiplicative and additive factors in the relationship are shown to increase linearly with the logarithm of the polymer concentration.  相似文献

Direct numerical simulations of turbulent viscoelastic-fluid flow in a channel with a rectangular orifice were performed to investigate the influence of viscoelasticity on turbulence statistics and turbulent structures downstream of the orifice. The geometry considered is periodic rectangular orifices with 1:2 expansion. The constitutive equation follows the Giesekus model, valid for polymer (or surfactant) solutions, which are generally capable of reducing the turbulent frictional drag in a smooth channel. The friction Reynolds number and the Weissenberg number were set to 100 and 20-30, respectively. A drag reduction of about 20% was achieved in the viscoelastic flows. The onset Reynolds number for the transition from a symmetric to an asymmetric state was found to be shifted to higher values than that for the Newtonian flow. In the viscoelastic flow, the turbulent kinetic energy was decreased and fewer turbulent eddies were observed, as the Kelvin-Helmholtz vortices were quickly damped. Away from the orifice, quasi-streamwise vortices in the viscoelastic flow were sustained for a longer period, accompanied by energy exchange from elastic energy of the viscoelastic fluid to kinetic energy.  相似文献

A new low-Reynolds-number kε turbulence model is developed for flows of viscoelastic fluids described by the finitely extensible nonlinear elastic rheological constitutive equation with Peterlin approximation (FENE-P model). The model is validated against direct numerical simulations in the low and intermediate drag reduction (DR) regimes (DR up to 50%). The results obtained represent an improvement over the low DR model of Pinho et al. (2008) [A low Reynolds number kε turbulence model for FENE-P viscoelastic fluids, Journal of Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics, 154, 89–108]. In extending the range of application to higher values of drag reduction, three main improvements were incorporated: a modified eddy viscosity closure, the inclusion of direct viscoelastic contributions into the transport equations for turbulent kinetic energy (k) and its dissipation rate, and a new closure for the cross-correlations between the fluctuating components of the polymer conformation and rate of strain tensors (NLTij). The NLTij appears in the Reynolds-averaged evolution equation for the conformation tensor (RACE), which is required to calculate the average polymer stress, and in the viscoelastic stress work in the transport equation of k. It is shown that the predictions of mean velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, its rate of dissipation by the Newtonian solvent, conformation tensor and polymer and Reynolds shear stresses are improved compared to those obtained from the earlier model.  相似文献

One very effective method of reducing the drag of a turbulent fluid flow is through the use of soluble, viscoelastic, long-chain, high-molecular-weight polymer additives. These additives have produced drag reduction of up to 80% in pipe flows. Polymers are typically added by injecting high concentration solutions into an established Newtonian flow.This study investigated the mechanism of drag reduction that occurs when a long-chain, high-molecular-weight polymer is injected along the centerline of a pipe with a concentration high enough to form a single, coherent, unbroken thread. In the present experiments, the unbroken threads existed for more than 200 pipe diameters downstream of the injector and produced drag reductions on the order of 40%. Previous authors have contended that this type of drag reduction is caused by the interaction of the thread with the outer flow. However, it has been proven in cases where the polymer is mixed throughout the flow that drag reduction requires the existence of polymer in the near-wall region. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that drag reduction from a polymer thread is caused by transport of polymer molecules from the thread into the near-wall region of the pipe. The objective was realized through the measurement of the drag reduction, the radial location of the thread, and the polymer concentration in the near-wall region. The concentration was measured by laser-induced fluorescence utilizing fluorescein dye as the tracer. This study provides strong evidence that the drag reduction from a polymer thread is caused by the transport of very low concentrations of polymer from the thread into the near-wall region.  相似文献

Riblet films are a passive method of turbulent boundary layer control that can reduce viscous drag. They have been studied with great detail for over 30 years. Although common riblet applications include flows with Adverse Pressure Gradients (APG), nearly all research thus far has been performed in channel flows. Recent research has provided motivation to study riblets in more complicated turbulent flows with claims that riblet drag reduction can double in mild APG common to airfoils at moderate angles of attack. Therefore, in this study, we compare drag reduction by scalloped riblet films between riblets in a zero pressure gradient and those in a mild APG using high-resolution large eddy simulations. In order to gain a fundamental understanding of the relationship between drag reduction and pressure gradient, we simulated several different riblet sizes that encompassed a broad range of s+ (riblet width in wall units), similarly to many previously published experimental studies. We found that there was only a slight improvement in drag reduction for riblets in the mild APG. We also observed that peak values of streamwise turbulence intensity, turbulent kinetic energy, and streamwise vorticity scale with riblet width. Primary Reynolds shear stresses and turbulence kinetic energy production however scale with the ability of the riblet to reduce skin-friction.  相似文献

The dynamic and thermal performance of particle-laden turbulent flow is investigated via direction numerical simulation combined with the Lagrangian point-particle tracking under the condition of two-way coupling, with a focus on the contributions of particle feedback effect to momentum and heat transfer of turbulence. We take into account the effects of particles on flow drag and Nusselt number and explore the possibility of drag reduction in con-junction with heat transfer enhancement in particle-laden turbulent flows.The effects of particles on momentum and heat transfer are analyzed,and the possibility of drag reduc-tion in conjunction with heat transfer enhancement for the prototypical case of particle-laden turbulent channel flows is addressed.We present results of turbulence modification and heat transfer in turbulent particle-laden channel flow,which shows the heat transfer reduction when large inertial parti-cles with low specific heat capacity are added to the flow. However,we also found an enhancement of the heat transfer and a small reduction of the flow drag when particles with high specific heat capacity are involved.The present results show that particles,which are active agents,interact not only with the velocity field,but also the temperature field and can cause a dissimilarity in momentum and heat transport.This demonstrates that the possibility to increase heat transfer and suppress friction drag can be achieved with addition of par-ticles with different thermal properties.  相似文献

A Laser-Doppler anemometer and a pressure transducer were used to carry out detailed measurements of the mean and root mean square of the velocity and wall-pressure in an axisymmetric sudden expansion flow, with 0.4 and 0.5% by weight shear-thinning aqueous solutions of a low molecular weight polymer (6,000), after appropriate rheological characterisation. In spite of their very low molecular weight, these solutions still exhibited elongational elastic effects through drag reduction of up to 35% relative to Newtonian turbulent pipe flow, as shown by Pereira and Pinho (1994). The results showed small variations of the recirculation bubble length with polymer concentration and Reynolds number and reductions of the normal Reynolds stresses of up to 30%, especially in the tangential and radial directions. The reduction in normal Reynolds stresses within the shear layer is an elongational elastic effect, but this elasticity needs to be considerably more intense, such as with high molecular weight polymers, in order to strongly affect the mean flow characteristics. The observed mean flow patterns with these low molecular weight polymer solutions were indeed similar to those exhibited by Newtonian and inelastic fluids.  相似文献

Prediction of drag reduction effect caused by pulsating pipe flows is examined using machine learning. First, a large set of flow field data is obtained experimentally by measuring turbulent pipe flows with various pulsation patterns. Consequently, more than 7000 waveforms are applied, obtaining a maximum drag reduction rate and maximum energy saving rate of 38.6% and 31.4%, respectively. The results indicate that the pulsating flow effect can be characterized by the pulsation period and pressure gradient during acceleration and deceleration. Subsequently, two machine learning models are tested to predict the drag reduction rate. The results confirm that the machine learning model developed for predicting the time variation of the flow velocity and differential pressure with respect to the pump voltage can accurately predict the nonlinearity of pressure gradients. Therefore, using this model, the drag reduction effect can be estimated with high accuracy.  相似文献

 We investigate the intermittent nature of turbulence and the phenomenon of turbulent drag reduction by linear, flexible high molecular weight polymers using Photon Correlation Spectroscopy. Our results support the existence of small scale coherent structures and inactive regions in turbulent flows. We further investigate turbulent drag reduction whereby polymer-eddy interaction result in the modification of the turbulent energy cascade. In the present work a technique is numerically investigated, which is aimed at reducing the friction drag in turbulent boundary layers and channel flows. A cyclic spanwise oscillation of the wall with a proper frequency and amplitude is imposed, allowing a reduction of the turbulent drag of up to 40%. The present work is based on the numerical simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations in the simple geometry of a plane channel flow. The frequency of the oscillations is kept fixed at the most efficient value determined in previous studies, while the choice of the best value for the amplitude of the oscillations is evaluated not only in terms of friction reduction, but also by taking into consideration the overall energy balance and the power spent for the motion of the wall. The analysis of turbulence statistics allows to shed some light on the way oscillations interact with wall turbulence, as illustrated by visual inspection of some instantaneous flow fields. Finally, a simple explanation is proposed for this interaction, which leads to a rough estimate of the most efficient value for the frequency of the oscillations.  相似文献

Drag reduction was studied for turbulent flow over a structured wall that contained 600 sinusoidal waves with a wavelength of 5 mm and an amplitude of 0.25 mm. A concentrated solution of a co-polymer of polyacrylamide and sodium acrylate was injected into the flow through wall slots. Laser Doppler velocimetry was used to measure turbulence. A fluorescence technique was developed that enabled us to demonstrate the existence, under certain circumstances, of large gelatinous structures in the injected polymer solution and in the flow channel.At maximum drag reduction, the Reynolds shear stress was zero and the velocity field was the same as found for a smooth surface. Larger drag reductions could be realized for a wavy wall because the initial drag was larger. The influences of polymers on the turbulent fields are similar for smooth and wavy boundaries. These results are of interest since the interaction with the wall can be quite different for water flow over smooth and wavy boundaries (which are characterized as being completely rough). An important effect of polymers is a decreasing relative importance of high frequency fluctuations with increasing drag reduction that is characterized by a cut-off frequency. This cut-off is the same for smooth and wavy walls at maximum drag reduction. The sensitivity of drag reduction to the method of preparing and delivering the polymer solution suggests that aggregation of polymers could be playing an important role for the system that was studied. For example, drag reduction was enhanced when large polymer structures are present.  相似文献

An experimental study has been performed to investigate the relationship between the extensional viscosity of polymers and the turbulent drag reduction. In order to obtain the flow which is mostly dominated by extensional flow, two-dimensional (2D) grid turbulence made by flowing soap films was used. Extensional rate added to the flow was controlled by changing the conformation of the grid. Polyethylene oxide, as a flexible polymer, and hydroxypropyl cellulose, as a rigid rod-like polymer were added to the flow. Several extensional rates affect polymer behaviors, which induce different effects. Drag reduction effects of polymers under several extensional rates were visualized and analyzed by image processing. Rheological properties of the polymer solutions were also measured by a rheometer. The results indicated that the mechanisms of energy transfer are different in the streamwise and normal directions. The critical concentration to observe drag reduction effects in 2D turbulence was changed by the extensional rate. When extensional rate is higher, the effects were started to observe from lower concentration. These results were confirmed to correspond to the drag reduction effects obtained by classical pressure drop experiments in a pipe flow.  相似文献

We present the results of a study of turbulent drag reduction in a small circulating loop using surfactant solutions with excess counterion. In addition, these solutions were used in measurements of heat transfer, both in pipe flow and in an impinging jet. Both frictional drag and heat transfer were reduced in the pipe flow experiments. Measurements of heat transfer in the impinging jet revealed a dependence on the molar concentration ratio of the counterion. When the counterion was added at a molar concentration 30 times higher than that of the surfactant, the resulting surfactant solution did not reduce the rate of heat transfer in the impinging jet. By using this surfactant system in an impinging jet, we show both a reduction in pipe friction and normal heat transfer potential in a circulating heat exchange system. In order to investigate this difference in heat transfer between pipe flows and impinging jet flows, a comparison was made of the wall shear stress between these two flow regimes. The estimated wall shear stress was of the same order in both flows, and thus was not considered to be the primary cause of the difference in heat transfer. It is instead suggested that the micellar structure of the surfactant is influenced by a compressive deformation of the impinging flow in a manner that is different from the shear deformation observed in pipe flow.  相似文献
