We call a subspace Y of a Banach space X a DBR subspace if its unit ball By admits farthest points from a dense set of points of X. In this paper, we study DBR subspaces of C(K). In the process, we study boundaries, in particular, the Choquet boundary of any general subspace of C(K). An infinite compact Hausdorff space K has no isolated point if and only if any finite co-dimensional subspace, in particular, any hyperplane is DBR in C(K). As a consequence, we show that a Banach space X is reflexive if and only if X is a DBR subspace of any superspace. As applications, we prove that any M-ideal or any closed *-subalgebra of C(K) is a DBR subspace of C(K). It follows that C(K) is ball remotal in C(K)**.  相似文献

We show that every nonempty compact and convex space M of probability Radon measures either contains a measure which has ‘small’ local character in M or else M contains a measure of ‘large’ Maharam type. Such a dichotomy is related to several results on Radon measures on compact spaces and to some properties of Banach spaces of continuous functions.  相似文献

Let X be a completely regular Hausdorff space and Cb(X) be the space of all real-valued bounded continuous functions on X, endowed with the strict topology βσ. We study topological properties of continuous and weakly compact operators from Cb(X) to a locally convex Hausdorff space in terms of their representing vector measures. In particular, Alexandrov representation type theorems are derived. Moreover, a Yosida-Hewitt type decomposition for weakly compact operators on Cb(X) is given.  相似文献

Let (X,τ) be a topological space and let ρ be a metric defined on X. We shall say that (X,τ) is fragmented by ρ if whenever ε>0 and A is a nonempty subset of X there is a τ-open set U such that UA≠∅ and ρ−diam(UA)<ε. In this paper we consider the notion of fragmentability, and its generalisation σ-fragmentability, in the setting of topological groups and metric-valued function spaces. We show that in the presence of Baireness fragmentability of a topological group is very close to metrizability of that group. We also show that for a compact Hausdorff space X, σ-fragmentability of (C(X),‖⋅) implies that the space Cp(X;M) of all continuous functions from X into a metric space M, endowed with the topology of pointwise convergence on X, is fragmented by a metric whose topology is at least as strong as the uniform topology on C(X;M). The primary tool used is that of topological games.  相似文献

LetX be any compact convex subset of a locally convex Hausdorff space andE be a complex Banach space. We denote byA(X, E) the space of all continuous and affineE-valued functions defined onX. In this paper we prove thatX is a Choquet simplex if and only if the dual ofA(X, E) is isometrically isomorphic by a selection map toM m (X, E*), the space ofE*-valued,w*-regular boundary measures onX. This extends and strengthens a result of G. M. Ustinov. To do this we show that for any compact convex setX, each element of the dual ofA(X, E) can be represented by a measure inM m (X, E*) with the same norm, and this representation is unique if and only ifX is a Choquet simplex. We also prove that ifX is metrizable andE is separable then there exists a selection map from the unit ball of the dual ofA(X, E) into the unit ball ofM m (X, E*) which is weak* to weak*-Borel measurable. This work will constitute a portion of the author's Ph.D. Thesis at the University of Illinois.  相似文献

In this article, we study the preservation properties of(ilov) boundary of multiplicative subgroups in C(X) spaces for non-surjective norm-preserving multiplicative maps.We also show a sufficient condition for surjective maps between groups of positive continuous functions to be a composition operator.  相似文献

We show that any Banach space contains a continuum of non-isomorphic subspaces or a minimal subspace. We define an ergodic Banach space X as a space such that E0 Borel reduces to isomorphism on the set of subspaces of X, and show that every Banach space is either ergodic or contains a subspace with an unconditional basis which is complementably universal for the family of its block-subspaces. We also use our methods to get uniformity results. We show that an unconditional basis of a Banach space, of which every block-subspace is complemented, must be asymptotically c0 or ?p, and we deduce some new characterisations of the classical spaces c0 and ?p.  相似文献

A metric space X is straight if for each finite cover of X by closed sets, and for each real valued function f on X, if f is uniformly continuous on each set of the cover, then f is uniformly continuous on the whole of X. The straight spaces have been studied in [A. Berarducci, D. Dikranjan, J. Pelant, An additivity theorem for uniformly continuous functions, Topology and its Applications 146-147 (2005) 339-352], which contains characterization of the straight spaces within the class of the locally connected spaces (they are the uniformly locally connected ones) and the class of the totally disconnected spaces (they coincide with the totally disconnected Atsuji spaces). We show that the completion of a straight space is straight and we characterize the dense straight subspaces of a straight space. In order to clarify further the relation between straightness and the level of local connectedness of the space we introduce two more intermediate properties between straightness and uniform local connectedness and we give various examples to distinguish them. One of these properties coincides with straightness for complete spaces and provides in this way a useful characterization of complete straight spaces in terms of the behaviour of the quasi-components of the space.  相似文献

Abstract

Let C (X) denote the lattice-ordered algebra of all real-valued continuous functions on a topological space X. This paper discusses in Zermelo-Fraenkel Set Theory the equivalence on C (X) between algebra homomorphisms, lattice homo- morphisms, and point evaluations.  相似文献

A metric space (X,d) is called an Atsuji space if every real-valued continuous function on (X,d) is uniformly continuous. It is well known that an Atsuji space must be complete. A metric space (X,d) is said to have an Atsuji completion if its completion is an Atsuji space. In this paper, we study twenty-nine equivalent characterisations for a metric space to have an Atsuji completion.  相似文献

Let X be a rearrangement invariant (r.i.) function space on [0,1]. We consider the Rademacher multiplicator space Λ(R,X) of measurable functions x such that xhX for every a.e. converging series h=∑anrnX, where (rn) are the Rademacher functions. We show that for a broad class of r.i. spaces X, the space Λ(R,X) is not r.i. In this case, we identify the symmetric kernel of the Rademacher multiplicator space and study when reduces to L. In the opposite direction, we find new examples of r.i. spaces for which Λ(R,X) is r.i. We consider in detail the case when X is a Marcinkiewicz or an exponential Orlicz space.  相似文献

If X is a compact-covering image of a closed subspace of product of a σ-compact Polish space and a compact space, then Ck(X,M), the space of continuous maps of X into M with the compact-open topology, is stratifiable for any metric space M.If X is σ-compact Polish, K is compact and M metric then every point of Ck(X×K,M) has a closure-preserving local base, and hence this function space is M1.  相似文献

In this paper we show that the closure of the space BMOA of analytic functions of bounded mean oscillation in the Bloch spaceB is the image P(U) of space of all continuous functions on the maximal ideal space ofH under the Bergman projection P. It is proved that the radial growth of functions in P(U) is slower than the iterated logarithm studied by Makarov. So some geometric conditions are given for functions in P(U), which we can easily use to construct many Bloch functions not in P(U).  相似文献

We construct a family (Xγ) of reflexive Banach spaces with long (countable as well as uncountable) transfinite bases but with no unconditional basic sequences. The method we introduce to achieve this allows us to considerably control the structure of subspaces of the resulting spaces as well as to precisely describe the corresponding spaces on non-strictly singular operators. For example, for every pair of countable ordinals γ,β, we are able to decompose every bounded linear operator from Xγ to Xβ as the sum of a diagonal operator and an strictly singular operator. We also show that every finite-dimensional subspace of any member Xγ of our class can be moved by and (4+?)-isomorphism to essentially any region of any other member Xδ or our class. Finally, we find subspaces X of Xγ such that the operator space L(X,Xγ) is quite rich but any bounded operator T from X into X is a strictly singular pertubation of a scalar multiple of the identity.  相似文献

LetC(X,E) andC(Y,F) denote the spaces of continuous functions on the Tihonov spacesX andY, taking values in the Banach spacesE andF, respectively. A linear mapH:C(X,E)C(Y,F) isseparating iff(x)g(x)=0 for allx inX impliesHf(y)Hg(y)=0 for ally inY. Some automatic continuity properties and Banach-Stone type theorems (i.e., asserting that isometries must be of a certain form) for separating mapsH between spaces of real- and complex-valued functions have already been developed. The extension of such results to spaces of vector-valued functions is the general subject of this paper. We prove in Theorem 4.1, for example, for compactX andY, that a linear isometryH betweenC(X,E) andC(Y,F) is a “Banach-Stone” map if and only ifH is “biseparating (i.e,H andH −1 are separating). The Banach-Stone theorems of Jerison and Lau for vector-valued functions are then deduced in Corollaries 4.3 and 4.4 for the cases whenE andF or their topological duals, respectively, are strictly convex. The present paper considers the existence of continuous roots of algebraic equations with coefficients being continuous functions defined on compact Hausdorff spaces. For a compact Hausdorff space X, C(X) denotes the Banach algebra of all continuous complex-valued functions on X with the sup norm ∥⋅. The algebra C(X) is said to be algebraically closed if each monic algebraic equation with C(X) coefficients has a root in C(X). First we study a topological characterization of a first-countable compact (connected) Hausdorff space X such that C(X) is algebraically closed. The result has been obtained by Countryman Jr, Hatori-Miura and Miura-Niijima and we provide a simple proof for metrizable spaces. Also we consider continuous approximate roots of the equation znf=0 with respect to z, where fC(X), and provide a topological characterization of compact Hausdorff space X with dimX?1 such that the above equation has an approximate root in C(X) for each fC(X), in terms of the first ?ech cohomology of X.  相似文献

Given two Banach function spaces X and Y related to a measure μ, the Y-dual space XY of X is defined as the space of the multipliers from X to Y. The space XY is a generalization of the classical Köthe dual space of X, which is obtained by taking Y = Lt(μ). Under minimal conditions, we can consider the Y-bidual space XYY of X (i.e. the Y-dual of XY). As in the classical case, the containment X ⊂ XYY always holds. We give conditions guaranteeing that X coincides with XYY, in which case X is said to be Y-perfect. We also study when X is isometrically embedded in XYY. Properties involving p-convexity, p-concavity and the order of X and Y, will have a special relevance.  相似文献

Abstract

Using a lifting of £ (μ, X) ([5],[6]), we construct a lifting ρ x of the seminormed vector space £ (μ, X) of measurable, essentially bounded X-valued functions. We show that in a certain sense such a lifting always exists. If μ is Lebesgue measure on (0, 1) we show that ρ x exists as map from £ ((O, 1), X) → £,((0, l), X) if and only if X is reflexive. In general the lifted function takes its values in X **. Therefore we investigate the question, when f ε £ (μ, X) is strictly liftable in the sense that the lifted function is a map with values even in X.

As an application we introduce the space £ strong (μ, L (X, Y**)), a subspace of the space of strongly measurable, essentially bounded L (X, Y, **)-valued functions, and the associated quotient space £ strong (μ, L (X,Y**)). We show that this space is a Banach space because there is a kind of a Dunford-Pettis Theorem for a subspace of L (X, £(μ Y**)). Finally we investigate the measurability property of functions in £(μ Y**)) und see that there exists a connection to the Radon-Nikodym property of the space L (X, Y).  相似文献
