For X a metrizable space and (Y,ρ) a metric space, with Y pathwise connected, we compute the density of (C(X,(Y,ρ)),σ)—the space of all continuous functions from X to (Y,ρ), endowed with the supremum metric σ. Also, for (X,d) a metric space and (Y,‖⋅‖) a normed space, we compute the density of (UC((X,d),(Y,ρ)),σ) (the space of all uniformly continuous functions from (X,d) to (Y,ρ), where ρ is the metric induced on Y by ‖⋅‖). We also prove that the latter result extends only partially to the case where (Y,ρ) is an arbitrary pathwise connected metric space.To carry such an investigation out, the notions of generalized compact and generalized totally bounded metric space, introduced by the author and A. Barbati in a former paper, turn out to play a crucial rôle. Moreover, we show that the first-mentioned concept provides a precise characterization of those metrizable spaces which attain their extent.  相似文献

We extend earlier work [M.R. Burke, N.D. Macheras, K. Musia?, W. Strauss, Category product densities and liftings, Topology Appl. 153 (2006) 1164-1191] of the authors on the existence of category liftings in the product of two topological spaces X and Y such that X×Y is a Baire space. For given densities ρ, σ on X and Y, respectively, we introduce two ‘Fubini type’ products ρσ and ρ?σ on X×Y. We present a necessary and sufficient condition for ρσ to be a density. Provided (X,Y) and (Y,X) have the Kuratowski-Ulam property, we prove for given category liftings ρ, σ on the factors the existence of a category lifting π on the product, dominating the density ρ?σ and such that

For every space X let K(X) be the set of all compact subsets of X. Christensen [J.P.R. Christensen, Necessary and sufficient conditions for measurability of certain sets of closed subsets, Math. Ann. 200 (1973) 189-193] proved that if X,Y are separable metrizable spaces and F:K(X)→K(Y) is a monotone map such that any LK(Y) is covered by F(K) for some KK(X), then Y is complete provided X is complete. It is well known [J. Baars, J. de Groot, J. Pelant, Function spaces of completely metrizable space, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 340 (1993) 871-879] that this result is not true for non-separable spaces. In this paper we discuss some additional properties of F which guarantee the validity of Christensen's result for more general spaces.  相似文献

We generalize and refine results from the author's paper [18]. For a completely regular Hausdorff space X, υX denotes the Hewitt realcompactification of X. It is proved that if υ(X×Y)=υX×υY for any metacompact subparacompact (or m-paracompact) space Y, then X is locally compact. A P(n)-space is a space in which every intersection of less than n open sets is open. A characterization of those spaces X such that υ (X×Y = υX×υY for any (metacompact) P(n)-space Y is also obtained.  相似文献

Throughout this paper, we consider the following two problems: (A) When does a rectangular normal cover of a product X×Y (or an infinite product λΛXλ) have a σ-locally finite rectangular cozero refinement? (B) What kind of a refinement makes a rectangular open cover of a product X×Y (or an infinite product λΛXλ) be normal? We shall discuss these problems on various products listed below.  相似文献

A metric space X is straight if for each finite cover of X by closed sets, and for each real valued function f on X, if f is uniformly continuous on each set of the cover, then f is uniformly continuous on the whole of X. A locally connected space is straight iff it is uniformly locally connected (ULC). It is easily seen that ULC spaces are stable under finite products. On the other hand the product of two straight spaces is not necessarily straight. We prove that the product X×Y of two metric spaces is straight if and only if both X and Y are straight and one of the following conditions holds:
(a)
both X and Y are precompact;
(b)
both X and Y are locally connected;
(c)
one of the spaces is both precompact and locally connected.
In particular, when X satisfies (c), the product X×Z is straight for every straight space Z.Finally, we characterize when infinite products of metric spaces are ULC and we completely solve the problem of straightness of infinite products of ULC spaces.  相似文献

The construct M of metered spaces and contractions is known to be a superconstruct in which all metrically generated constructs can be fully embedded. We show that M has one point extensions and that quotients in M are productive. We construct a Cartesian closed topological extension of M and characterize the canonical function spaces with underlying sets Hom(X,Y) for metered spaces X and Y. Finally we obtain an internal characterization of the objects in the Cartesian closed topological hull of M.  相似文献

We construct metric spaces X and Y such that their clones cloX and cloY (i.e. the categories of all continuous maps on their respective finite powers) are not isomorphic while any initial segment of cloX is isomorphic to the corresponding segment of cloY.  相似文献

With each metric space (X,d) we can associate a bornological space (X,Bd) where Bd is the set of all subsets of X with finite diameter. Equivalently, Bd is the set of all subsets of X that are contained in a ball with finite radius. If the metric d can attain the value infinite, then the set of all subsets with finite diameter is no longer a bornology. Moreover, if d is no longer symmetric, then the set of subsets with finite diameter does not coincide with the set of subsets that are contained in a ball with finite radius. In this text we will introduce two structures that capture the concept of boundedness in both symmetric and non-symmetric extended metric spaces.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate two main problems. One of them is the question on the existence of category liftings in the product of two topological spaces. We prove, that if X×Y is a Baire space, then, given (strong) category liftings ρ and σ on X and Y, respectively, there exists a (strong) category lifting π on the product space such that π is a product of ρ and σ and satisfies the following section property:

Let X be a metric continuum and let Fn(X) be the nth symmetric product of X (Fn(X) is the hyperspace of nonempty subsets of X with at most n points). In this paper we prove that if Fn(X) is homeomorphic to Fn(Y), where X is a finite graph and Y is a continuum, then X is homeomorphic to Y.  相似文献

The connected Vietoris powerlocale is defined as a strong monad Vc on the category of locales. VcX is a sublocale of Johnstone's Vietoris powerlocale VX, a localic analogue of the Vietoris hyperspace, and its points correspond to the weakly semifitted sublocales of X that are “strongly connected”. A product map ×:VcX×VcYVc(X×Y) shows that the product of two strongly connected sublocales is strongly connected. If X is locally connected then VcX is overt. For the localic completion of a generalized metric space Y, the points of are certain Cauchy filters of formal balls for the finite power set FY with respect to a Vietoris metric.Application to the point-free real line R gives a choice-free constructive version of the Intermediate Value Theorem and Rolle's Theorem.The work is topos-valid (assuming natural numbers object). Vc is a geometric construction.  相似文献

In 2003 the author has associated with every cofinite inverse system of compact Hausdorff spaces X with limit X and every simplicial complex K (possibly infinite) with geometric realization P=|K| a resolution R(X,K) of X×P, which consists of paracompact spaces. If X consists of compact polyhedra, then R(X,K) consists of spaces having the homotopy type of polyhedra. In two subsequent papers the author proved that R(X,K) is a covariant functor in each of its variables X and K. In the present paper it is proved that R(X,K) is a bifunctor. Using this result, it is proved that the Cartesian product X×Z of a compact Hausdorff space X and a topological space Z is a bifunctor SSh(Cpt)×Sh(Top)→Sh(Top) from the product category of the strong shape category of compact Hausdorff spaces SSh(Cpt) and the shape category Sh(Top) of topological spaces to the category Sh(Top). This holds in spite of the fact that X×Z need not be a direct product in Sh(Top).  相似文献

In this paper we explore a family of strong completeness properties in GO-spaces defined on sets of real numbers with the usual linear ordering. We show that if τ is any GO-topology on the real line R, then (R,τ) is subcompact, and so is any Gδ-subspace of (R,τ). We also show that if (X,τ) is a subcompact GO-space constructed on a subset XR, then X is a Gδ-subset of any space (R,σ) where σ is any GO-topology on R with τ=σX|. It follows that, for GO-spaces constructed on sets of real numbers, subcompactness is hereditary to Gδ-subsets. In addition, it follows that if (X,τ) is a subcompact GO-space constructed on any set of real numbers and if τS is the topology obtained from τ by isolating all points of a set SX, then (X,τS) is also subcompact. Whether these two assertions hold for arbitrary subcompact spaces is not known.We use our results on subcompactness to begin the study of other strong completeness properties in GO-spaces constructed on subsets of R. For example, examples show that there are subcompact GO-spaces constructed on subsets XR where X is not a Gδ-subset of the usual real line. However, if (X,τ) is a dense-in-itself GO-space constructed on some XR and if (X,τ) is subcompact (or more generally domain-representable), then (X,τ) contains a dense subspace Y that is a Gδ-subspace of the usual real line. It follows that (Y,τY|) is a dense subcompact subspace of (X,τ). Furthermore, for a dense-in-itself GO-space constructed on a set of real numbers, the existence of such a dense subspace Y of X is equivalent to pseudo-completeness of (X,τ) (in the sense of Oxtoby). These results eliminate many pathological sets of real numbers as potential counterexamples to the still-open question: “Is there a domain-representable GO-space constructed on a subset of R that is not subcompact”? Finally, we use our subcompactness results to show that any co-compact GO-space constructed on a subset of R must be subcompact.  相似文献

We characterize those topological spaces Y for which the Isbell and finest splitting topologies on the set C(X,Y) of all continuous functions from X into Y coincide for all topological spaces X. We also consider the same question for the coincidence of the restriction of the finest splitting topology on the upper semicontinuous set-valued functions to C(X,Y) and the finest splitting topology on C(X,Y). In the first case, the spaces in question are, after identifying points that are in each others closures, subsets of the two point Sierpiński space, which gives a converse and generalization of a result of S. Dolecki, G.H. Greco, and A. Lechicki. In the second case, the spaces in question are, after identifying points that are in each others closures, order bases for bounded complete continuous DCPOs with the Scott topology.  相似文献

In a previous paper the author has associated with every inverse system of compact Hausdorff spaces X with limit X and every simplicial complex K (possibly infinite) with geometric realization P=|K| a resolution RK(X) of X×P, which consists of paracompact spaces. If X consists of compact polyhedra, then RK(X) consists of spaces having the homotopy type of polyhedra. In the present paper it is proved that this construction is functorial. One of the consequences is the existence of a functor from the strong shape category of compact Hausdorff spaces X to the shape category of spaces, which maps X to the Cartesian product X×P. Another consequence is the theorem which asserts that, for compact Hausdorff spaces X, X, such that X is strong shape dominated by X and the Cartesian product X×P is a direct product in Sh(Top), then also X×P is a direct product in the shape category Sh(Top).  相似文献

We consider the question: when is a dense subset of a space XC-embedded in X? We introduce the notion of o-tightness and prove that if each finite subproduct of a product X = Πα?AXα has a countable o-tightness and Y is a subset of X such that πB(Y) = Πα?BXα for every countable B ? A, then Y is C-embedded in X. This result generalizes some of Noble and Ulmer's results on C-embedding.  相似文献

Let Cp(X) be the space of all continuous real-valued functions on a space X, with the topology of pointwise convergence. In this paper we show that Cp(X) is not domain representable unless X is discrete for a class of spaces that includes all pseudo-radial spaces and all generalized ordered spaces. This is a first step toward our conjecture that if X is completely regular, then Cp(X) is domain representable if and only if X is discrete. In addition, we show that if X is completely regular and pseudonormal, then in the function space Cp(X), Oxtoby's pseudocompleteness, strong Choquet completeness, and weak Choquet completeness are all equivalent to the statement “every countable subset of X is closed”.  相似文献

No convenient internal characterization of spaces that are productively Lindelöf is known. Perhaps the best general result known is Alster?s internal characterization, under the Continuum Hypothesis, of productively Lindelöf spaces which have a basis of cardinality at most 11. It turns out that topological spaces having Alster?s property are also productively weakly Lindelöf. The weakly Lindelöf spaces form a much larger class of spaces than the Lindelöf spaces. In many instances spaces having Alster?s property satisfy a seemingly stronger version of Alster?s property and consequently are productively X, where X is a covering property stronger than the Lindelöf property. This paper examines the question: When is it the case that a space that is productively X is also productively Y, where X and Y are covering properties related to the Lindelöf property.  相似文献

In ZF, i.e., Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory without the axiom of choice, the category Top of topological spaces and continuous maps is well-behaved. In particular, Top has sums (=coproducts) and products. However, it may happen that for families (Xi)iI and (Yi)iI with the property that each Xi is homeomorphic to the corresponding Yi neither their sums iIXi and iIYi nor their products iIXi and iIYi are homeomorphic. It will be shown that the axiom of choice is not only sufficient but also necessary to rectify this defect.  相似文献
