We study the emergence of a magnetic resonance in the superconducting state of the electron-doped cuprate superconductors. We show that the recently observed resonance peak in the electron-doped superconductor Pr0.88LaCe0.12CuO4-delta is consistent with an overdamped spin exciton located near the particle-hole continuum. We present predictions for the magnetic-field dependence of the resonance mode as well as its temperature evolution in those parts of the phase diagram where dx2-y2-wave superconductivity may coexist with an antiferromagnetic spin-density wave.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements have been made on two of the electron-doped high-temperature superconducting cuprates (HTSCs), Pr2−xCexCuO4 and Sr0.9La0.1CuO2 that represent the two known electron-doped structures. The results are compared with the more-studied hole-doped HTSCs. We show that the electron and hole-doped HTSCs probe a similar antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation spectrum in the normal state, which provides support for theories of superconductivity where the pairing is mediated by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and the superconducting order parameter has a dx2y2 symmetry. Contrary to results from underdoped and hole-doped HTSCs, there is no evidence for a normal-state pseudogap in the NMR data from measurements on the electron-doped HTSCs. Therefore, the electron-doped HTSCs can be better compared with overdoped and hole-doped HTSCs where the normal-state pseudogap is absent. The antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation spectrum as probed by the Cu spin–lattice relaxation rate, is independent of the doped electrons per Cu. A similar effect is observed in the overdoped and hole-doped HTSC, Y1−xCaxBa2Cu3O7−δ for a hole concentration range of 0.063. The anomalous Cu NMR linewidth anisotropy observed in the electron-doped HTSCs suggests a small and static spin variation for temperatures up to room temperature.

Superconducting metal dichalcogenides (MDCs) present several similarities to the other layered superconductors like cuprates. The superconductivity in atomically thin MDCs has been demonstrated by recent experiments, however, the investigation of the superconductivity intertwined with other orders are scarce. Investigating the pseudogap in atomic layers of MDCs may help to understand the superconducting mechanism for these true two-dimensional (2D) superconducting systems. Herein we report a pseudogap opening in the tunneling spectra of thin layers of SnSe2 epitaxially grown on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) with scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS). A significant V-shaped pseudogap was observed to open near the Fermi level (EF) in the STS. And at elevated temperatures, the gap gradually evolves to a shallow dip. Our experimental observations provide direct evidence of a pseudogap state in the electron-doped SnSe2 atomic layers on the HOPG surface, which may stimulate further exploration of the mechanism of superconductivity at 2D limit in MDCs.

We report on laser-excited angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in the electron-doped cuprate Sm1.85Ce0.15CuO(4-δ). The data show the existence of a nodal hole-pocket Fermi surface both in the normal and superconducting states. We prove that its origin is long-range antiferromagnetism by an analysis of the coherence factors in the main and folded bands. This coexistence of long-range antiferrmagnetism and superconductivity implies that electron-doped cuprates are two-Fermi-surface superconductors. The measured superconducting gap in the nodal hole pocket is compatible with a d-wave symmetry.

We performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on electron-doped high-Tc superconductor Pr0.89LaCe0.11CuO4 to study the anisotropy of the superconducting gap. The observed momentum dependence is basically consistent with the dx2-y2- wave symmetry, but obviously deviates from the monotonic dx2-y2- gap function. The maximum gap is observed not at the zone boundary, but at the hot spot where the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation strongly couples to the electrons on the Fermi surface. The present experimental results suggest the spin-mediated pairing mechanism in electron-doped high-Tc superconductors.

Neutron scattering is used to probe antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the d-wave heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 (T_(c)=2.3 K). Superconductivity develops from a state with slow (variant Planck's over 2piGamma=0.3+/-0.15 meV) commensurate [Q_(0)=(1/2,1/2,1/2)] antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and nearly isotropic spin correlations. The characteristic wave vector in CeCoIn5 is the same as CeIn3 but differs from the incommensurate wave vector measured in antiferromagnetically ordered CeRhIn5. A sharp spin resonance (variant Planck's over 2piGamma<0.07 meV) at variant Planck's over 2piomega=0.60+/-0.03 meV develops in the superconducting state removing spectral weight from low-energy transfers. The presence of a resonance peak is indicative of strong coupling between f-electron magnetism and superconductivity and consistent with a d-wave gap order parameter satisfying Delta(q+Q0)=-Delta(q).

We report nuclear magnetic resonance studies on the low-doped n-type copper-oxide Pr(0.91)LaCe(0.09)CuO(4-y) (T(c)=24 K) in the superconducting state and in the normal state uncovered by the application of a strong magnetic field. We find that when the superconductivity is removed the underlying ground state is the Fermi liquid state. This result is at variance with that inferred from previous thermal conductivity measurement and appears to contrast with that in p-type copper oxides with a similar doping level where high-T(c) superconductivity sets in within the pseudogap phase. The data in the superconducting state are consistent with the line-node gap model.

A phase diagram reflecting the main features of the typical phase diagram of cuprate superconductors has been studied within the framework of the Ginzburg-Landau phenomenology in the vicinity of a tetracritical point, which appears as a result of the competition of the superconducting and insulating pairing channels. The superconducting pairing under repulsive interaction corresponds to a two-component order parameter, whose relative phase is related to the orbital antiferromagnetic insulating ordering. Under weak doping, the insulating order coexists with the superconductivity at temperatures below the superconducting phase transition temperature and is manifested as a weak pseudogap above this temperature. A part of the pseudogap region adjacent to the superconducting state corresponds to developed fluctuations of the order parameter in the form of quasi-stationary states of noncoherent superconducting pairs and can be interpreted as a strong pseudogap. As the doping level is increased, the system exhibits a phase transition from the region of coexistence of the superconductivity and the orbital antiferromagnetism to the usual superconducting state. In this state, a region of developed fluctuations of the order parameter in the form of quasi-stationary states of uncorrelated orbital circular currents exists near the phase transition line.

We determine the magnetic-field dependence of the pseudogap closing temperature T* within a precursor superconductivity scenario. Detailed calculations with an anisotropic lattice model with d-wave superconductivity account for a recently determined experimental relation in BSCCO between the pseudogap closing field and the pseudogap temperature at zero field, as well as for the weak initial dependence of T* at low fields. Our results indicate that the available experimental data are fully compatible with a superconducting origin of the pseudogap in cuprate superconductors.

We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the energy gap(s) in (Bi,Pb)2(Sr,La)2CuO6+delta. We find that the spectral gap has two components in the superconducting state: a superconducting gap and pseudogap. Differences in their momentum and temperature dependence suggest that they represent two separate energy scales. Spectra near the node reveal a sharp peak with a small gap below T(c) that closes at T(c). Near the antinode, spectra are broad with a large energy gap of approximately 40 meV above and below T(c). The latter spectral shape and gap magnitude are almost constant across T(c), indicating that the pseudogap state coexists with the superconducting state below T(c), and it dominates spectra around the antinode. We speculate that the pseudogap state competes with the superconductivity by diminishing spectral weight in antinodal regions, where the superconducting gap is largest.

Quasiparticle tunneling spectra of the electron-doped ( n-type) infinite-layer cuprate Sr0.9La0.1CuO2 reveal characteristics that counter a number of common phenomena in the hole-doped ( p-type) cuprates. The optimally doped Sr0.9La0.1CuO2 with T(c) = 43 K exhibits a momentum-independent superconducting gap Delta = 13.0+/-1.0 meV that substantially exceeds the BCS value, and the spectral characteristics indicate insignificant quasiparticle damping by spin fluctuations and the absence of pseudogap. The response to quantum impurities in the Cu sites also differs fundamentally from that of the p-type cuprates with d(x(2)-y(2))-wave pairing symmetry.

Based on a four-layered self-doped t-J type model and the slave-boson mean-field approach, we study theoretically the superconductivity in the electron-doped and hole-doped layers. The neighbor layers are coupled through both the single electron interlayer hopping and pair tunneling effect. The superconducting gap magnitude for the electron-doped band is nearly twice that of the hole-doped one, which contrasts with our previous understanding of the electron-hole asymmetry in high-T(c) superconductors but is consistent with recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments in four-layered materials Ba2Ca3Cu4O8F2. Our results propose that the pair tunneling effect is important to examine the multilayered superconducting materials.

The magnetic and crystal structures of the alpha-NaMnO2 have been determined by high-resolution neutron powder diffraction. The system maps out a frustrated triangular spin lattice with anisotropic interactions that displays two-dimensional spin correlations below 200 K. Magnetic frustration is lifted through magneto-elastic coupling, evidenced by strong anisotropic broadening of the diffraction profiles at high temperature and ultimately by a structural phase transition at 45 K. In this low-temperature regime a three-dimensional antiferromagnetic state is observed with a propagation vector k=(1/2,1/2,0).

The interplay between the superconducting gap and normal-state pseudogap in the bilayer cuprate superconductors is studied based on the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism. It is shown that the charge carrier interaction directly from the interlayer coherent hopping in the kinetic energy by exchanging spin excitations does not provide the contribution to the normal-state pseudogap in the particle–hole channel and superconducting gap in the particle–particle channel, while only the charge carrier interaction directly from the intralayer hopping in the kinetic energy by exchanging spin excitations induces the normal-state pseudogap in the particle–hole channel and superconducting gap in the particle–particle channel, and then the two-gap behavior is a universal feature for the single layer and bilayer cuprate superconductors.

The nature of the pseudogap state and its relation to the d-wave superconductivity in high-T c superconductors is still an open issue. The vortex-like excitations detected by the Nernst effect measurements exist in a certain temperature range above superconducting transition temperature T c, which strongly support that the pseudogap phase is characterized by finite pairing amplitude with strong phase fluctuations and imply that the phase transition at T c is driven by the loss of long-range phase coherence. We first briefly introduce the electronic phase diagram and pseudogap state of high-T c superconductors, and then review the results of Nernst effect for different high-T c superconductors. Related theoretical models are also discussed.
