This paper gives a review of methods where Green's theorem may be employed in solving numerically the Navier–Stokes equations for incompressible fluid motion. They are based on the concept of using the theorem to transform local boundary conditions given on the boundary of a closed region in the solution domain into global, or integral, conditions taken over it. Two formulations of the Navier–Stokes equations are considered: that in terms of the streamfunction and vorticity for two-dimensional motion and that in terms of the primitive variables of the velocity components and the pressure. In the first formulation overspecification of conditions for the streamfunction is utilized to obtain conditions of integral type for the vorticity and in the second formulation integral conditions for the pressure are found. Some illustrations of the principle of the method are given in one space dimension, including some derived from two-dimensional flows using the series truncation method. In particular, an illustration is given of the calculation of surface vorticity for two-dimensional flow normal to a flat plate. An account is also given of the implementation of these methods for general two-dimensional flows in both of the mentioned formulations and a numerical illustration is given.

In this paper we consider symmetric and antisymmetric periodic boundary conditions for flows governed by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Classical periodic boundary conditions are studied as well as symmetric and antisymmetric periodic boundary conditions in which there is a pressure difference between inlet and outlet. The implementation of this type of boundary conditions in a finite element code using the penalty function formulation is treated and also the implementation in a finite volume code based on pressure correction. The methods are demonstrated by computation of a flow through a staggered tube bundle.

This paper consists of three parts. The first deals with the separation conditions for three dimensional steady viscous separated flows, in which the behaviour of separated flow described by Navier-Stokes equations and boundary layer equations is studied. The second part involves an application of differential topology to qualitative analysis of flow fields. Here the distribution rule of singular points on the separation line is studied. The last part discusses the numerical method solving Navier-Stokes equations for separated flows. The obtained computational results are analysed by the above mentioned theories and methods.

We present a technique for calculating the temperature field in the vicinity of a cylinder in a viscous incompressible fluid flow under given conditions for the heat flux or the cylinder surface temperature. The Navier-Stokes equations and the energy equation for the steady heat transfer regime form the basis of the calculations. The numerical calculations are made for three flow regimes about the cylinder, corresponding to Reynolds numbers of 20, 40, and 80. The pressure distribution, voracity, and temperature distributions along the cylinder surface are found. It is known that for a Reynolds number R>1 the calculation of cylinder drag within the framework of the solution of the Oseen and Stokes equations yields a significant deviation from the experimental data. In 1933 Thom first solved this problem [1] on the basis of the Navier-Stokes equations. Subsequently several investigators [2, 3] studied the problem of viscous incompressible fluid flow past a cylinder. It has been established that a stable solution of the Navier-Stokes equations exists for R40 and that in this case the calculation results are in good agreement with the experimental data. According to [2], a stable solution also exists for R=44. The possibility of obtaining a steady solution for R>44 is suggested.Analysis of the results of [2] permits suggesting that the questions of constructing a difference scheme with a given order of approximation of the basic differential relations which will permit obtaining the sought solution over the entire range of variation of the problem parameters of interest are still worthy of attention.Calculation of the velocity field in the vicinity of a cylinder also makes possible the calculation of the cylinder temperature regime for given conditions for the heat flux or the temperature on its surface. However, we are familiar only with experience in the analytic solution of several questions of cylinder heat transfer with the surrounding fluid for large R within the framework of boundary layer theory [4].

In this paper, the nonreflecting boundary conditions based upon fundamental ideas of the linear analysis are developed for gas dynamic equations, and the modified boundary conditions for Navier-Stokes equations are proposed as a substitute of the nonreflecting boundary conditions inside boundary layers near rigid walls. These derived boundary conditions are then applied to calculations both for the Euler equations and the Navier-Stokes equations to determine if they can produce acceptable results for the subsonic flows in channels. The numerical results obtained by an implicit second-order upwind difference scheme show the effectiveness and generality of the boundary conditions. Furthermore, the formulae and the analysis performed here may be extended to three dimensional problems. recommended by Prof. Cui Erjie

An efficient discrete singular convolution (DSC) method is introduced to the numerical solutions of incompressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations with periodic boundary conditions. Two numerical tests of two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with periodic boundary conditions and Euler equations for doubly periodic shear layer flows are carried out by using the DSC method for spatial derivatives and fourth-order Runge-Kutta method for time advancement, respectively. The computational results show that the DSC method is efficient and robust for solving the problems of incompressible flows, and has the potential of being extended to numerically solve much broader problems in fluid dynamics. This paper treats the homogenization of the Stokes or Navier-Stokes equations with a Dirichlet boundary condition in a domain containing many tiny solid obstacles, periodically distributed in each direction of the axes. (For example, in the three-dimensional case, the obstacles have a size of 3 and are located at the nodes of a regular mesh of size .) A suitable extension of the pressure is used to prove the convergence of the homogenization process to a Brinkman-type law (in which a linear zero-order term for the velocity is added to a Stokes or Navier-Stokes equation).

The study of axisymmetric flows is of interest not only from an academic point of view, due to the existence of exact solutions of Navier–Stokes equations, but also from an industrial point of view, since these kind of flows are frequently found in several applications. In the present work the development and implementation of a finite element algorithm to solve Navier–Stokes equations with axisymmetric geometry and boundary conditions is presented. Such algorithm allows the simulation of flows with tangential velocity, including free surface flows, for both laminar and turbulent conditions. Pseudo‐concentration technique is used to model the free surface (or the interface between two fluids) and the k–ε model is employed to take into account turbulent effects. The finite element model is validated by comparisons with analytical solutions of Navier–Stokes equations and experimental measurements. Two different industrial applications are presented. The numerical method of lines (NUMOL) is a numerical technique used to solve efficiently partial differential equations. In this paper, the NUMOL is applied to the solution of the two‐dimensional unsteady Navier–Stokes equations for incompressible laminar flows in Cartesian coordinates. The Navier–Stokes equations are first discretized (in space) on a staggered grid as in the Marker and Cell scheme. The discretized Navier–Stokes equations form an index 2 system of differential algebraic equations, which are afterwards reduced to a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs), using the discretized form of the continuity equation. The pressure field is computed solving a discrete pressure Poisson equation. Finally, the resulting ODEs are solved using the backward differentiation formulas. The proposed method is illustrated with Dirichlet boundary conditions through applications to the driven cavity flow and to the backward facing step flow. Axisymmetric Couette-Taylor flow between two concentric rotating cylinders was simulated numerically by the spectral method. First, stream function form of the Navier-Stokes equations which homogeneous boundary condition was given by introducing Couette flow. Second, the analytical expressions of the eigenfunction of the Stokes operator in the cylindrical gap region were given and its orthogonality was proved. The estimates of growth rate of the eigenvalue were presented. Finally, spectral Galerkin approximation of Couette-Taylor flow was discussed by introducing eigenfunctions of Stokes operator as basis of finite dimensional approximate subspaces. The existence, uniquence and convergence of spectral Galerkin approximation of nonsingular solution for the steady-state Navier-Stokes equations are proved. Moreover, the error estimates are given. Numerical result is presented.

The problem of modeling a viscous fluid flow over the surface of a plate is considered when the pressure changes along the longitudinal coordinate according to a linear law. The corresponding boundary conditions are formulated for this problem. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved exactly in the problem of flow past the plate for the case of fluid outflow and a longitudinal pressure drop. Several formulas to determine the velocity profile are derived. The limiting cases are analyzed to study the consistency of various models. The corresponding pressure conditions are proposed for the case when the Navier-Stokes system has a known exact solution.

Some exact solutions of the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations are discussed for flows impulsively started from rest by the motion of a boundary or two boundaries or by sudden application of a pressure gradient. It is shown that the expressions of the quantities such as velocity, flux and skin friction obtained in a series form for large times can also be used to find their values for small times or vice versa. Furthermore, conditions for which the values of the quantities at large times are nearly the same with those at small times are derived.

Spectral methods for analyses of steady flows in annuli bounded by walls with either axi‐symmetric or longitudinal ribs are developed. The physical boundary conditions are enforced using the immersed boundary conditions concept. In the former case, the Stokes stream function is used to eliminate pressure and to reduce system of field equations to a single fourth‐order partial differential equation. The ribs are assumed to be periodic in the axial direction and this permits representation of the solution in terms of the Fourier expansion. In the latter case, the problem is reduced to the Laplace equations for the flow modifications that can be expressed in terms of the Fourier expansions. The modal functions, which are functions of the radial coordinate, are discretized using Chebyshev polynomials. The problem formulations are closed using either the fixed volume flow rate constraint or the fixed pressure gradient constraint. Various tests have been carried out in order to demonstrate the spectral accuracy of the discretizations, as well as the spectral accuracy of the enforcement of the flow boundary conditions at the ribbed walls using the immersed boundary conditions concept. Special linear solver that takes advantage of the matrix structure has been implemented in order to reduce computational time and memory requirements. It is shown that the algorithm has superior performance when one is interested in the analysis of a large number of geometries, as part of the coefficient matrix that corresponds to the field equation is always the same and one needs to change only the part of the matrix that corresponds to the boundary relations when changing geometry of the flow domain. On the basis of Stokes separated flows, examples of separated flows described by the Navier-Stokes equations of a viscous incompressible fluid are constructed. These flows are represented by series convergent in a certain non-zero neighborhood of a flat contour immersed in the flow. In this neighborhood, the series have the same structure as those for the basic Stokes flows. Examples of the regions in which the series segments chosen give only a slight deviation from the numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations are presented. The comparison between inviscid separated flows (without the no-slip condition on the contour) and viscous flows of the same structure (with the no-slip condition) shows that the viscosity does not play a decisive role in the formation of separation or the type of streamline approach to or departure from the contour.

The stagnation flow towards a shrinking sheet is studied. A similarity transform reduces the Navier-Stokes equations to a set of non-linear ordinary differential equations which are then integrated numerically. Both two-dimensional and axisymmetric stagnation flows are considered. It is found that solutions do not exist for larger shrinking rates and may be non-unique in the two-dimensional case. The non-alignment of the stagnation flow and the shrinking sheet complicates the flow structure. Convective heat transfer decreases with the shrinking rate due to an increase in boundary layer thickness.

An approximate method for the efficient calculation of stagnation-streamline quantities in hypersonic flows about spheres or cylinders is suggested. Based on the local similarity of the flow field the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are simplified to a one-dimensional approximation for the stagnation streamline. These equations are solved with an implicit finite-volume scheme. Comparisons with fully two–dimensional Euler and Navier–Stokes calculations for flows about spheres are presented, that include perfect gas flows and flows in chemical non-equilibrium. Comparisons with a number of experiments conclude this report. Received 8 May 1996 / Accepted 31 October 1996  相似文献
