Silica-metal nanostructures consisting of silica cores and metal nanoshells attract a lot of attention because of their unique properties and potential applications ranging from catalysis and biosensing to optical devices and medicine. The important feature of these nanostructures is the possibility of controlling their properties by the variation of their geometry, shell morphology and shell material. This review is devoted to silica-noble metal core-shell nanostructures; specifically, it outlines the main methods used for the preparation and surface modification of silica particles and presents the major strategies for the formation of metal nanoshells on the modified silica particles. A special emphasis is given to the St?ber method, which is relatively simple, effective and well verified for the synthesis of large and highly uniform silica particles (with diameters from 100 nm to a few microns). Next, the surface chemistry of these particles is discussed with a special focus on the attachment of specific organic groups such as aminopropyl or mercaptopropyl groups, which interact strongly with metal species. Finally, the synthesis, characterization and application of various silica-metal core-shell nanostructures are reviewed, especially in relation to the siliceous cores with gold or silver nanoshells. Nowadays, gold is most often used metal for the formation of nanoshells due to its beneficial properties for many applications. However, other metals such as silver, platinum, palladium, nickel and copper were also used for fabrication of core-shell nanostructures. Silica-metal nanostructures can be prepared using various methods, for instance, (i) growth of metal nanoshells on the siliceous cores with deposited metal nanoparticles, (ii) reduction of metal species accompanied by precipitation of metal nanoparticles on the modified silica cores, and (iii) formation of metal nanoshells under ultrasonic conditions. A special emphasis is given to the seed-mediated growth, where metal nanoshells are formed on the modified silica cores with deposited metal nanoparticles. This strategy assures a good control of the nanoshell thickness as well as its surface properties.  相似文献

In this article, we demonstrated the synthesis of metallodielectric composite particles comprising a metal shell on a dielectric core and an outer coating of an insulating dielectric layer by depositing silver on silica supporting cores followed by coating of titania. A combination of surface reaction and surface seeding techniques is exploited for the formation of a complete silver shell on silica spheres. The additional outer coating of titania on silver shell particles is then performed by hydrolyzing tetra-n-butyl titanate in ethanol at room temperature. The morphologies of silver shells and titania coating are studied with electron microscopy, and their existences are confirmed with X-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray measurement.  相似文献

Synthesis of bi-functional silica particles by a simple wet chemical method is described where the mixture of ultra fine nanoparticles (1-3 nm) of titania and silver were attached on the silica particle surface in a controlled way to form a core-shell structure. The silica surface showed efficient bi-functional activity of photo-catalytically self cleaning and antibacterial activity due to nanotitania and nanosilver mutually benefiting each other's function. The optimum silver concentration was found where extremely small silver nanoparticles are formed and the total composite particle remains white in color. This is an important property in view of certain applications such as antibacterial textiles where the original fabric color has to be retained even after applying the nanosilver on it. The particles were characterized at each step of the synthesis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy. Bi-functional silica particles showed accelerated photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue as well as enhanced antibacterial property when tested as such particles and textiles coated with these bi-functional silica particles even at lower silver concentration.  相似文献

This report describes the structural and optical properties of a series of spherical shell/core nanoparticles in which the shell is comprised of a thin layer of gold, silver, or gold-silver alloy, and the core is comprised of a monodispersed silica nanoparticle. The silica core particles were prepared using the St?ber method, functionalized with terminal amine groups, and then seeded with small gold nanoparticles (approximately 2 nm in diameter). The gold-seeded silica particles were coated with a layer of gold, silver, or gold-silver alloy via solution-phase reduction of an appropriate metal ion or mixture of metal ions. The size, morphology, and elemental composition of the composite nanoparticles were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The optical properties of the nanoparticles were analyzed by UV-vis spectroscopy, which showed strong absorptions ranging from 400 nm into the near-IR region, where the position of the plasmon band reflected not only the thickness of the metal shell, but also the nature of the metal comprising the shell. Importantly, the results demonstrate a new strategy for tuning the position of the plasmon resonance without having to vary the core diameter or the shell thickness.

A novel method is proposed to create asymmetrically nanoparticle-supported, monodisperse composite dumbbells. The method consists of the three steps of double soap-free emulsion polymerizations before and after a heterocoagulation. In the first step, soap-free emulsion polymerization was conducted to cover silica cores with cross-linked poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) shells. Then, positively or negatively charged silica nanoparticles were heterocoagulated with the silica-PMMA core-shell particles. In the heterocoagulations, the nanoparticles surface-modified with a cationic silane coupling agent, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, were used as the positively charged ones, and silica nanoparticles without any treatment were used as the negatively charged ones. In the third step, soap-free polymerizations at different pH values were performed to protrude a polystyrene (PSt) bulge from the core-shell particles supporting the charged silica nanoparticles. In the polymerization, the core-shell particles heterocoagulated with the positively charged silica nanoparticles were aggregated in an acidic condition whereas the silica nanoparticles supported on the core-shell particles were dissolved in a basic condition. For the negatively charged silica nanoparticle, a PSt bulge was successfully protruded from the core-shell particle in acidic and neutral conditions without aggregation of the core-shell particles. The protrusion of the PSt bulge became distinctive when the number of heterocoagulated silica nanoparticles per core-shell particle was increased. Additional heterocoagulation experiments, in which positively or negatively charged magnetite nanoparticles were mixed with the asymmetrically nanoparticle-supported composite dumbbells, confirmed direct exposure of silica nanoparticles to the outer solvent phase.  相似文献

Silica-metal core–shell particles, as for instance those having siliceous core and nanostructured gold shell, attracted a lot of attention because of their unique properties resulting from combination of mechanical and thermal stability of silica and magnetic, electric, optical and catalytic properties of metal nanocrystals such as gold, silver, platinum and palladium. Often, the shell of the core–shell particles consists of a large number of metal nanoparticles deposited on the surface of relatively large silica particles, which is the case considered in this work. Namely, silica particles having size of about 600 nm were subjected to surface modification with 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane. This modification altered the surface properties of silica particles, which was demonstrated by low pressure nitrogen adsorption at ?196 °C. Next, gold nanoparticles were deposited on the surface of aminopropyl-modified silica particles using two strategies: (i) direct deposition of gold nanoparticles having size of about 10 nm, and (ii) formation of gold nanoparticles by adsorption of tetrachloroauric acid on aminopropyl groups followed by its reduction with formaldehyde. The overall morphology of silica–gold particles and the distribution of gold nanoparticles on the surface of modified silica colloids were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. It was shown that direct deposition of colloidal gold on the surface of large silica particles gives more regular distribution of gold nanopartciles than that obtained by reduction of tetrachloroauric acid. In the latter case the gold layer consists of larger nanoparticles (size of about 50 nm) and is less regular. Note that both deposition strategies afforded silica–gold particles having siliceous cores covered with shells consisting of gold nanoparticles of tunable concentration.  相似文献

We report the synthesis of well-dispersed core-shell Au@SiO(2) nanoparticles with minimal extraneous silica particle growth. Agglomeration was suppressed through consecutive exchange of the stabilizing ligands on the gold cores from citrate to L-arginine and finally (3-mercaptopropyl)triethoxysilane. The result was a vitreophilic, stable gold suspension that could be coated with silica in a biphasic mixture through controlled hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane under L-arginine catalysis. Unwanted condensation of silica particles without gold cores was limited by slowing the transfer across the liquid-liquid interface and reducing the concentration of the L-arginine catalyst. In-situ dynamic light scattering and optical transmission spectroscopy revealed the growth and dispersion states during synthesis. The resulting core-shell particles were characterized via dynamic light scattering, optical spectroscopy, and electron microscopy. Their cores were typically 19 nm in diameter, with a narrow size distribution, and could be coated with a silica shell in multiple steps to yield core-shell particles with diameters up to 40 nm. The approach was sufficiently controllable to allow us to target a shell thickness by choosing appropriate precursor concentrations.  相似文献

The composite particles with core/shell structure resulting from the combination of silica seed and hydrophobic copolymer (dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate (DFMA), gamma-methacryloxypropyltriisopropoxidesilane (MAPTIPS), methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate) were synthesized by emulsion polymerization. The amount of the silica seeds, concentration of reactive surfactant, as well as the addition of DFMA and MAPTIPS, have strong influences on the morphology of composite particles. It has been shown that it would be possible to produce stable organic/inorganic composite particles with inhomogeneous core/shell structure encapsulated by hydrophobic fluorinated acrylate even though using unmodified silica particles and admixture of anionic and nonionic surfactants. However, there was an obvious difference on the morphologies of core-shell structure whether the DFMA and MAPTIPS were added or not. It was concluded that two kinds of polymerization approaches might coexist in the presence of DFMA and MAPTIPS for raw silica. One clear advantage of this process is that there is only one silica bead for each composite particle. This kind of stable core-shell structural hybrid latex is useful for preparing high performance hydrophobic coating.  相似文献

A novel simplified method for synthesis of surface-enhanced Raman scattering tags has been reported. This synthesis method is based on reverse micelle technique using Igepal CO-520 as a surfactant and the mixed solution of silver nitrate and rhodamine dyes with isothiocyanate group as water pool followed by hydrazine hydrate reduction and TEOS polymerization leading to the formation of silica layer surrounding the silver core. Compared to the method reported in literature, the proposed methodology eliminates the necessity of vitrophilic pretreatment and makes it possible to complete all different processes including the preparation of silver nanoparticles, the conjugation of dye molecules and the formation of silica shell in the microreactor. The nanoparticle-based surface-enhanced Raman tags obtained are composed of silver core conjugated with rhodamine dyes and an encasing silica shell. Both the dyes themselves and the Ag/SiO2 core-shell nanoparticles without the encapsulation of dyes exhibit no Raman signals. However, the Ag/SiO2 core-shell nanoparticles exhibit strong Raman signals when encapsulated with these dyes. This is due to the appearance of fluorescence quenching and surface-enhanced Raman scattering effect resulting from the conjugation of dyes and silver core. The Raman tags were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-visible absorption spectrometry, and Raman spectrometry.  相似文献

Three-layer composite magnetic nanoparticle probes for DNA   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
A method for synthesizing composite nanoparticles with a gold shell, an Fe3O4 inner shell, and a silica core has been developed. The approach utilizes positively charged amino-modified SiO2 particles as templates for the assembly of negatively charged 15 nm superparamagnetic water-soluble Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The SiO2-Fe3O4 particles electrostatically attract 1-3 nm Au nanoparticle seeds that act in a subsequent step as nucleation sites for the formation of a continuous gold shell around the SiO2-Fe3O4 particles upon HAuCl4 reduction. The three-layer magnetic nanoparticles, when functionalized with oligonucleotides, exhibit the surface chemistry, optical properties, and cooperative DNA binding properties of gold nanoparticle probes, but the magnetic properties of the Fe3O4 inner shell.  相似文献

Gold nanoparticles prepared through a conventional citrate-reduction method were directly coated with silica by means of a seeded polymerization technique based on the St?ber method. The method required no surface modification. The addition of tetraethylorthosilicate and water prior to ammonia was found to be critical to obtain a proper coating. The silica shell thickness was varied from 30 to 90 nm for TEOS concentrations of 0.0005-0.02 M at 10.9 M of water and 0.4 M of ammonia. The optical spectra of the core-shell gold-silica composite particles agreed with predictions of Mie theory.  相似文献

The silica–silver core–shell particles were synthesized by simple one pot chemical method and were employed on the cotton fabric as an antibacterial agent. Extremely small (1–2 nm) silver nanoparticles were attached on silica core particles of average 270 nm size. The optimum density of the nano silver particles was found which was sufficient to show good antibacterial activity as well as the suppression in their surface plasmon resonance responsible for the colour of the core–shell particle for antibacterial textile application. The change in the density and size of the particles in the shell were monitored and confirmed by direct evidence of their transmission electron micrographs and by studying surface plasmon resonance characteristics. The colony counting method of antibacterial activity testing showed excellent results and even the least silver containing core–shell particles showed 100% activity against bacterial concentration of 104 colony counting units (cfu). The bonding between core–shell particles and cotton fabric was examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The antibacterial activity test confirmed the firm attachment of core–shell particles to the cotton fabric as a result 10 times washed sample was as good antibacterial as that of unwashed sample. The bacterial growth was inhibited on and beneath the coated fabric, at the same time no zone of inhibition which occurs due to the migration of silver ions into the medium was observed indicating immobilization of silver nanoparticles on silica and core–shell particles on fabric by strong bonding.  相似文献

Magnetite nanoparticles with tunable gold or silver shell   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Fe3O4 nanoparticles with size approximately 13 nm have been prepared successfully in aqueous micellar medium at approximately 80 degrees C. To make Fe3O4 nanoparticles resistant to surface poisoning a new route is developed for coating Fe3O4 nanoparticles with noble metals such as gold or silver as shell. The shell thickness of the core-shell particles becomes tunable through the adjustment of the ratio of the constituents. Thus, the route yields well-defined core-shell structures of size from 18 to 30 nm with varying proportion of Fe3O4 to the noble metal precursor salts. These magnetic nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), FTIR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Raman and temperature-dependent magnetic studies.  相似文献

A two-population model based on standard small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) equations is verified for the analysis of core-shell structures comprising spherical colloidal particles with particulate shells. First, Monte Carlo simulations of core-shell structures are performed to demonstrate the applicability of the model. Three possible shell packings are considered: ordered silica shells due to either charge-dependent repulsive or size-dependent Lennard-Jones interactions or randomly arranged silica particles. In most cases, the two-population model produces an excellent fit to calculated SAXS patterns for the simulated core-shell structures, together with a good correlation between the fitting parameters and structural parameters used for the simulation. The limits of application are discussed, and then, this two-population model is applied to the analysis of well-defined core-shell vinyl polymer/silica nanocomposite particles, where the shell comprises a monolayer of spherical silica nanoparticles. Comprehensive SAXS analysis of a series of poly(styrene-co-n-butyl acrylate)/silica colloidal nanocomposite particles (prepared by the in situ emulsion copolymerization of styrene and n-butyl acrylate in the presence of a glycerol-functionalized silica sol) allows the overall core-shell particle diameter, the copolymer latex core diameter and polydispersity, the mean silica shell thickness, the mean silica diameter and polydispersity, the volume fractions of the two components, the silica packing density, and the silica shell structure to be obtained. These experimental SAXS results are consistent with electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, thermogravimetry, helium pycnometry, and BET surface area studies. The high electron density contrast between the (co)polymer and the silica components, together with the relatively low polydispersity of these core-shell nanocomposite particles, makes SAXS ideally suited for the characterization of this system. Moreover, these results can be generalized for other types of core-shell colloidal particles.  相似文献

Silica-silver core-shell composite particles with uniform thin silver layers were successfully synthesized by a facile and one-step ultrasonic electrodeposition method. By electrolysis of the slurry consisting of preformed silica spheres and silver perchlorate without any additives, the homogenous composite particles can be prepared. The average size of single silver crystals in the composite is about 12 nm and the thickness of silver layer is 14±2 nm. Moreover, the continuity of Ag distribution, the surface roughness and the thickness of silver layer are controllable by adjusting the current density (I), the concentration of electrolyte (C) and the reaction time (t). Optical properties of the composite particles with different silver content were also investigated.  相似文献

We report on the use of Neem (Azadirachta indica) leaf broth in the extracellular synthesis of pure metallic silver and gold nanoparticles and bimetallic Au/Ag nanoparticles. On treatment of aqueous solutions of silver nitrate and chloroauric acid with Neem leaf extract, the rapid formation of stable silver and gold nanoparticles at high concentrations is observed to occur. The silver and gold nanoparticles are polydisperse, with a large percentage of gold particles exhibiting an interesting flat, platelike morphology. Competitive reduction of Au3+ and Ag+ ions present simultaneously in solution during exposure to Neem leaf extract leads to the synthesis of bimetallic Au core-Ag shell nanoparticles in solution. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the silver nanoparticles are adsorbed onto the gold nanoparticles, forming a core-shell structure. The rates of reduction of the metal ions by Neem leaf extract are much faster than those observed by us in our earlier studies using microorganisms such as fungi, highlighting the possibility that nanoparticle biological synthesis methodologies will achieve rates of synthesis comparable to those of chemical methods.  相似文献
