Topology and brush thickness of turbulent premixed V-shaped flames were investigated using Mie scattering and Particle Image Velocimetry techniques. Mean bulk flow velocities of 4.0, 6.2, and 8.3 m/s along with two fuel-air equivalence ratios of 0.6 and 0.7 were tested in the experiments. Using a novel experimental turbulence generating apparatus, three turbulence intensities of approximately 2 %, 6 %, and 17 % were tested in the experiments. The results show that topology of the flame front is significantly altered by changing the turbulence intensity. Specifically, at relatively small turbulence intensities, the flame fronts feature wrinkles which are symmetric with respect to the vertical axis. At moderate values of turbulence intensities, the flame fronts form cusps. The formation of cusps is more pronounced at large mean bulk flow velocities. The results associated with relatively large turbulence intensity show that flame surfaces feature: mushroom-shaped structures, freely propagating sub-flames, pocket formation, localized extinction, and horn-shaped structures. Analysis of the results show that the flame brush thickness follows a linear correlation with the root-mean-square of the flame front position. The correlation is in agreement with the results of past experimental investigations associated with moderately turbulent premixed V-shaped flames, and holds for the range of turbulence conditions tested. This suggests that the underlying mechanism associated with the dynamics of moderately turbulent premixed V-shaped flames proposed in past studies can potentially be valid for the the wide range of turbulence conditions examined in the present investigation.  相似文献

The variation of main turbulent quantities in an isotropic turbulent flow, such as the decay of turbulent energy and the variation of Taylor microscale of turbulence with time are obtained, by employing a hot-wire anemometer and a nearly isotropic turbulent flow which is produced by a gridscreen located at the entrance of the test section in a low-level turbulence and low-speed wind tunnel in Peking University. The experimental results of the decay of turbulent energy and the variation of Taylor microscale of turbulence with time at the whole period from initial to final stage, normalized in an non-dimensional form, are consistent quite well with the computational results by the theory of the statistical vorticity structure[1]. The experimental results presented in this paper also agree with Townsend's results obtained in earlier years[2] as well as with Bennett's in the seventy's[3].  相似文献

This paper presents an attempt to realize experimental isotropicturbulence at low Reynolds number. For this aim an experimentalapparatus, a turbulence chamber “Box”, was designed and built togenerate a turbulent flow field in the center of the chamber. Theturbulent airflow field was generated by eight electrical fans placedsymmetrically at the eight internal corners of the externally cubicchamber. The turbulence intensity was controlled by the fans speed.Laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) in single and two-point velocitymeasurements was used to fully characterize the turbulent field insidethe chamber. The main results indicate that the turbulence ishomogeneous and isotropic with a quasi-zero mean velocity within aspherical region of 20 mm radius from the center of the chamber. Themeasured turbulent integral length scale was found to be constant andindependent of the turbulence intensity (or fans speed). Furthermore, anoticeable spectral inertial subrange as prescribed by the Kolmogorovtheory has not been observed at the range of Reynolds number exploredhere, where Reλ < 100. But rather a scaling region characterized by anexponent that is lower than the Kolmogorov value, ?5/3, has beenidentified. Moreover, the value of this exponent showed no definedtrend, while the width of the inertial scaling region expands as themicroscale Reynolds number increases.  相似文献

Measurements of mean velocity components, turbulent intensity, and Reynolds shear stress are presented in a turbulent lifted H2/N2 jet flame as well as non-reacting air jet issuing into a vitiated co-flow by laser doppler velocimetry (LDV) technique. The objectives of this paper are to obtain a velocity data base missing in the previous experiment data of the Dibble burner and so provide initial and flow field data for evaluating the validity of various numerical codes describing the turbulent partially premixed flames on this burner. It is found that the potential core is shortened due to the high ratio of jet density to co-flow density in the non-reacting cases. However, the existence of flame suppressed turbulence in the upstream region of the jet dominates the length of potential core in the reacting cases. At the centreline, the normalized axial velocities in the reacting cases are higher than the non-reacting cases, and the relative turbulent intensities of the reacting flow are smaller than in the non-reacting flow, where a self-preserving behaviour for the relative turbulent intensities exists at the downstream region. The profiles of mean axial velocity in the lifted flame distribute between the non-reacting jet and non-premixed flame both in the axial and radial distributions. The radial distributions of turbulent kinetic energy in the lifted flames exhibit a change in distributions indicating the difference of stabilisation mechanisms of the two lifted flame. The experimental results presented will guide the development of an improved modelling for such flames.  相似文献

Turbulent opposed jet (TOJ) burners are an interesting test case for fundamental combustion research and a good benchmark for the available modelling approaches. However, these opposed jet flames strongly depend on the turbulence generation inside the nozzle, which is usually achieved through a perforated plate upstream of the nozzle exit. The present work investigates the flow from these perforated plates and the subsequent turbulence generation in great detail. We present results from highly-resolved large eddy simulations (LES) of the in-nozzle flow in turbulent opposed jets alongside state-of-the-art particle image velocimetry (PIV) at standard and high repetition rates taken inside a glass nozzle. The in-nozzle PIV data provides the LES inflow conditions with unprecedented detail, which are used to follow the initial jet development behaviour known from PIV, before jet coalescence, turbulence production and decay further downstream in the nozzles are successfully predicted. In regions where the PIV experiment suffers from inherent limitations like reflections and the velocity bias, the LES data is available to still obtain a detailed picture of the flow. The sensitivity of the simulations to various physical and numerical parameters is discussed in detail. Results from LES and PIV are compared qualitatively and quantitatively in terms of first and second moments of velocity, temporal autocorrelations, and energy density spectra. Significant deviations are found in the frequency (20%) and strength of vortex shedding from the inlet plane only, whereas the qualitative and quantitative agreement between simulation and experiment is otherwise excellent throughout, implying that a successful large eddy simulation of a turbulent opposed jet can be performed in a domain that includes the perforated plates.  相似文献

Turbulence-intensity measurements were made in a Taylor-Couette flow reactor consisting of two counter-rotating concentric cylinders designed for the purpose of studying turbulent premixed-flame propagation. In the annulus separating the two cylinders, a nearly homogeneous turbulent flow is generated. The intensities of turbulent velocity fluctuations in the annulus in both axial and circumferential directions were measured by using laser-Doppler velocimetry for a wide range of cylinder rotation rates, corresponding to low through high (120 cm/s) intensities relative to typical laminar flame speeds for lean methane-air mixtures. The experimental measurements indicate a linear relation between turbulence intensities and average cylinder surface speed and demonstrate the usefulness of the Taylor-Couette apparatus for studies of premixed-flame propagation in high-intensity turbulent flow.  相似文献

We studied experimentally the effect of turbulent thermal diffusion in a multi-fan turbulence generator which produces a nearly homogeneous and isotropic flow with a small mean velocity. Using particle image velocimetry and image processing techniques, we showed that in a turbulent flow with an imposed mean vertical temperature gradient (stably stratified flow) particles accumulate in the regions with the mean temperature minimum. These experiments detected the effect of turbulent thermal diffusion in a multi-fan turbulence generator for relatively high Reynolds numbers. The experimental results are in compliance with the results of the previous experimental studies of turbulent thermal diffusion in oscillating grid turbulence (Buchholz et al. 2004; Eidelman et al. 2004). We demonstrated that the turbulent thermal diffusion is an universal phenomenon. It occurs independently of the method of turbulence generation, and the qualitative behavior of particle spatial distribution in these very different turbulent flows is similar. Competition between turbulent fluxes caused by turbulent thermal diffusion and turbulent diffusion determines the formation of particle inhomogeneities.  相似文献

An experimental study was conducted to develop and characterize systematically a new turbulence generator system to yield large turbulent Reynolds numbers in a compact configuration. The effect of the geometric parameters of two families of high-blockage plates on the resulting turbulent flow field was systematically studied: one series of plates was characterized by the number and distribution of circular openings; a second series had non-circular opening(s) with different shapes, distribution and position of the opening(s). The plates were placed upstream of a contoured contraction and the near field at the centerline of the resulting turbulent free jet was characterized by hot-wire anemometry in terms of mean axial velocity, turbulence intensity, turbulence length scales and corresponding Reynolds numbers. The plate with a central, non-circular opening produced the best compromise of highest turbulence levels along with excellent uniformity in average velocity and turbulence intensity, as evidenced by scan in the transverse direction. It appears to be the most promising one. By comparison with more traditional approaches to turbulence generation, we increased the turbulent Reynolds numbers based on the integral length scale to values on the order of 1000, which was one of the design objectives. Other plate geometries also yielded intense turbulence, but, in some cases, exhibited spurious frequency peaks in their power spectrum. The turbulent generation approach is to be adapted to combustion studies to reproduce conditions typical of practical system in relatively small experimental set-ups that are well-suited for bench-top experiments.  相似文献

A compact active grid is developed with which a pipe flow can be stirred in order to enhance the turbulence. The active grid is composed of a stationary and a rotating disk with characteristic hole patterns. This active grid is placed inside the pipe, allowing flow to pass through it. With only one moving part, the design is much less complicated than current active grids. Several combinations of perforated disks are investigated, and the resulting control over the turbulent intensity and spectral energy distribution is quantified over a wide range of rotation frequencies. We find that significant turbulent fluctuations are introduced mainly in the energy-containing range and partially also in the inertial subrange. These additional fluctuations represent up to 25 % of the total energy and are not caused by pulsations of the mean flow. The compact active grid will be of use where efficient mixing in limited space is required and in applications when the introduction of specific lengthscales is desirable, such as in premixed burners.  相似文献

Gas-particle two-phase turbulent flow in a vertical duct   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Two-phase gas-phase turbulent flows at various loadings between the two vertical parallel plates are analyzed. A thermodynamically consistent turbulent two-phase flow model that accounts for the phase fluctuation energy transport and interaction is used. The governing equation of the gas-phase is upgraded to a two-equation low Reynolds number turbulence closure model that can be integrated directly to the wall. A no-slip boundary condition for the gas-phase and slip-boundary condition for the particulate phase are used. The computational model is first applied to dilute gas-particle turbulent flow between two parallel vertical walls. The predicted mean velocity and turbulence intensity profiles are compared with the experimental data of Tsuji et al. (1984) for vertical pipe flows, and good agreement is observed. Examples of additional flow properties such as the phasic fluctuation energy, phasic fluctuation energy production and dissipation, as well as interaction momentum and energy supply terms are also presented and discussed.

Applications to the relatively dense gas-particle turbulent flows in a vertical channel are also studied. The model predictions are compared with the experimental data of Miller & Gidaspow and reasonable agreement is observed. It is shown that flow behavior is strongly affected by the phasic fluctuation energy, and the momentum and energy transfer between the particulate and the fluid constituents.  相似文献

A collection of radiative emissions by several flames is analyzed. Such flames have been obtained in a number of burners, either premixed or not, fed with different fuels, while radiative emission is collected by means of a photo-diode, whose sampled signal is able to carry a large quantity of information about chemistry of flames and its interaction with turbulence. All the spectra computed show a decaying trend towards high frequencies with a slope of −5/3, that is known to be the inertial scaling of kinetic energy for homogeneous, isotropic, nonreacting turbulent flows. The aim of this work is to propose a physical model for the interpretation of the radiant energy scaling law coming from this simple instrument. To this purpose radiative emission of the flame has been splitted into two contributions, and its dynamics analyzed. The first contribution is the chemiluminescence effect, whereas the other is to be accounted for thermal emission of a gray/black body, ruled by Planck radiative equation. The time fluctuation of radiative emission is proposed to be linked to a thin reacting surface fluctuating in time and space under the constraint of turbulent fluid dynamic field. The thin reacting surface should be considered as the local flame front in premixed combustion, and as the local stoichiometric mixture fraction front in nonpremixed case. Taking into account such emission mechanisms, a physical interpretation of the −5/3 slope is proposed.  相似文献

The flame curvature statistics of turbulent premixed Bunsen flames have been analysed in this paper using a Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) database of turbulent Bunsen flames at ambient and elevated pressures. In order to be able to perform a large parametric study in terms of pressure, heat release parameter, turbulence conditions and nozzle diameter, a single step Arrhenius type irreversible chemistry has been used for the purpose of computational economy, where thermo-chemical parameters are adjusted to match the behavior of stoichiometric methane-air flames. This analysis focuses on the characterization of the local flame geometry in response to turbulence and hydro-dynamic instability. The shape of the flame front is found to be consistent with existing experimental data. Although the Darrieus Landau instability promotes cusp formation, a qualitatively similar flame morphology can be observed for hydro-dynamically stable flames. A criterion has been suggested for the curvature PDF to become negatively skewed.  相似文献

Despite significant advances in the understanding and modelling of turbulent combustion, no general model has been proposed for simulating flames in industrial combustion devices. Recently, the increase in computational possibilities has raised the hope of directly solving the large turbulent scales using large eddy simulation (LES) and capturing the important time-dependant phenomena. However, the chemical reactions involved in combustion occur at very small scales and the modelling of turbulent combustion processes is still required within the LES framework. In the present paper, a recently presented model for the LES of turbulent premixed flames is presented, analysed and discussed. The flamelet hypothesis is used to derive a filtered source term for the filtered progress variable equation. The model ensures proper flame propagation. The effect of subgrid scale (SGS) turbulence on the flame is modelled through the flame-wrinkling factor. The present modelling of the source term is successfully tested against filtered direct numerical simulation (DNS) data of a V-shape flame. Further, a premixed turbulent flame, stabilised behind an expansion, is simulated. The predictions agree well with the available experimental data, showing the capabilities of the model for performing accurate simulations of unsteady premixed flames.  相似文献

For homogeneous isotropic turbulence study, the acquisition of band-pass filtered velocity increments (FVI) in a non-forced turbulent box is still a challenge both experimentally and numerically. Turbulence and associated physical processes, at a given instant, are permanently contaminated by a forcing process which can seldom be universal. The situation tends to be the origin of intermittency and the non-Gaussian probability density distribution for acceleration and velocity gradients. To reveal implied mechanism, grid turbulence is adapted to observe non-perturbed homogeneous isotropic turbulence. The velocity increments (VI) can be obtained following Comte-Bellot and Corrsin (GCBC) by means of two point-two time shifted velocity measurements. It is difficult to obtain decaying turbulence (DT) at large turbulent Reynolds number without pollution coming from walls. Nevertheless it is also significant to investigate DT in low Reynolds number regimes to determine non-polluted tendencies. The similarity of DT between particle image velocimetry (PIV) and hot wire anemometry measurements by GCBC are presented. Here we focus our tendency on VI and FVI probability density function (PDF) shapes in this letter. In conclusion, the tendency to Gaussian shape in inertial zone wavenumbers, demonstrates that there will be no intermittency if turbulent cascade is not perturbed.  相似文献

The process of auto-ignition in a non-premixed, homogeneous and isotropic turbulent medium is considered. The governing pdf transport equation is simulated via a Monte Carlo method. It is found that the pdf evolution depends on the relative magnitudes of two time scales, namely, that of turbulent mixing and of chemical reaction. Calculations made for a wide range of these time scales show that at least four different regimes of auto-ignition may be identified. These are classified into premixed and non-premixed type, and are located on a Damköhler number diagram.  相似文献

In the present study, Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) simulations are applied to a series of turbulent V-shaped flames. Two formulations of Conditional Source-term Estimation (CSE) are developed using singly and doubly conditioned averages for turbulent premixed and partially premixed flames, respectively. Detailed chemistry is included. Conditionally averaged chemical source terms are closed by conditional averaged scalars which are obtained by inverting an integral equation. The objectives are to study a turbulent premixed V-shaped flame using the premixed CSE approach and apply the Doubly Conditional CSE (DCSE) combustion model to a case of stratified combustion. The partially premixed implementation involves double conditioning on two variables, mixture fraction and progress variable. The present study represents the first application of DCSE for a series of turbulent stratified flames. First, CSE is analysed for fully premixed conditions. A sensitivity analysis on the number of CSE ensembles and different scalar dissipation model closures is performed. Good results are obtained in terms of velocity and progress variable profiles. Finally, the partially premixed formulation is applied to the stratified case at three different conditions, corresponding to two different turbulence grids and three different profiles of the equivalence ratio, providing promising results.  相似文献

Laminar flamelet decomposition (LFD) is a dynamic approach for modelling sub-filter scale turbulence-chemistry interactions in Large-Eddy Simulations using a stretched flamelet library. In this work, the performance of the LFD model – that was previously used only in non-premixed combustion—is investigated a priori for premixed combustion using positively-strained flamelets in the reactant-to-product configuration. For this purpose, a DNS database of methane-air premixed flames is utilized. The flames are propagating in a rectangular box under homogeneous isotropic turbulence conditions over a wide range of Karlovitz numbers. The results show that the LFD model can correctly account for the sub-filter scale turbulence-chemistry interactions to predict the filtered reaction rates and the filtered scalar field, provided that turbulent and laminar mixing are well predicted. The deviations from the DNS results are attributed to the shortcomings of the strained flamelet library and the non-flamelet effects. Finally, the LFD results are compared with a different sub-filter scale model using the same strained flamlelet library, and the relative performances of the two models are discussed.—

Influences of acoustic instabilities on premixed turbulent-flames have been studied experimentally in a Taylor–Couette (TC) combustor for downward flame propagation in a turbulent flow-field generated in the annulus between two cylinders. Flow-field velocities were measured at a fixed location upstream of the propagating flame using laser-doppler velocimetry, while flame speeds were determined from video-recorded images. It is found that the existence of pre-ignition turbulence in the combustor (generated by rotation of the combustor-cylinder walls) does not eliminate acoustic instabilities, however as the level of pre-ignition turbulence is increased the influence of the secondary acoustic instability on the turbulent-flame speed becomes insignificant. For low intensities of pre-ignition turbulence the flame is found to accelerate during the latter stages of flame propagation, while for high levels of pre-ignition turbulence the flame propagates at a statistically constant speed, even though velocity fluctuations have been substantially amplified by the time the flame reaches the bottom end of the combustor as a result of acoustic instability.  相似文献

This contribution is aimed at drawing the attention of the computational fluid dynamics community on the availability of an experimental database regarding turbulent lean premixed prevaporised (LPP) reacting flows stabilised behind a double symmetric, plane sudden expansion fed by two fully developed turbulent channel flows of air plus propane. This flow configuration can be thought of as a relevant benchmark for testing turbulence and/or combustion models aimed at helping for the design of reliable LPP combustion chambers. This database contains a large amount of raw and processed data regarding essentially the velocity field for one inert and three different reacting flows configurations. Additional pieces of information are available and concern the lean extinction properties and the wall static pressure evolution in the feeding channels. For the reacting flows, the presence of a large scale coherent motion is clearly visible in the velocity spectra and it is shown how a data processing based on the semi-deterministic approach that decomposes the velocity signal into the sum of its steady time average, its coherent fluctuations and its stochastic fluctuations can permit to evaluate their respective contribution to the total velocity fluctuations.  相似文献
