Nuclear emulsions were used to study the energy spectrum and forward-backward asymmetry of neutrons from the Co59(p,n) reaction forE p 6·5 MeV. It was found that the decay of the compound nucleus makes a maximum contribution of 50% to the reaction yield. Energies of some excited states of the Ni59 nucleus were also determined.

The change in frequency of quartz piezoelectric resonators in a d-c electric polarizing field cannot be explained merely by a change in the dimensions of the resonator due to the polarizing field caused by the inverse piezoelectric effect and electrostriction. We are forced to admit that the elastic constants also change in a polarizing field. A phenomenological interpretation of the influence of a d-c electric polarizing field on the frequency of quartz resonators is proposed here, based on newly introduced quantities characterizing such a change. In conclusion it is shown in what way the quantities, on which the phenomenological theory is based, can be determined experimentally.

The paper derives a general formula for the scattering of electromagnetic (or sound) waves from a periodic, perfectly conducting (or perfectly rigid) surface. No restrictions are imposed on the angle of incidence, the size of the surface or the degree of roughness. Except for the basic Kirchhoff approximation, the method is exact. The results confirm, generalise or correct special cases obtained by more complicated methods.

Radiative corrections to the electron polarization in the beta decay of a free neutron
An expression for the electromagnetic radiative corrections of the order (=1/137) to the longitudinal polarization degree of the electron in the beta decay of a free neutron is derived in the approximation /M1 ( is the neutron-proton mass difference,M — mass of the neutron). The corrections are not larger than 0·2% and it seems that they cannot explain the deviation of the experimental value for the electron polarization from the value –v/c (measured in the beta decay of nuclei).

The influence of a small electric perturbation of variable phase on the brightness wave of alternating electroluminescence of ZnS-Cu is investigated. The results are compared with the model described in [1]. The increase in the number of ionized activators after switching on the electric field is studied and is found to reach equilibrium. after about 50 to 150 sec.

The magnetostriction constant of nickel was measured as a function of plastic deformation up to an elongation of 30%. The values of the magnetostriction constant in deformed samples deviate considerably, a fact which cannot be explained by errors of measurement. The absolute value of the magnetostriction constant decreases with increasing plastic deformation (by around 5%).

The interaction of foils lying in a plane during their activation by thermal neutrons has been calculated. Numerical values of functions are listed, which can be used in calculations, especially for graphite. The interaction was measured in the graphite column of the VVR-S reactor.

The paper deals with the basic properties of the simplest equations, corresponding to representation of the Lorentz group with maximum spin 3/2. It gives the representations of matrices which appear in these equations, the subsidiary conditions and solutions in the forceless case. The consistency of the equations after the introduction of electromagnetic interaction is proved and the magnetic moments of the particles are calculated. The equations describing particles with two mass states are dealt with in greater detail. The distinguishability of the two mass states is investigated and the lifetimes of the excited mass states at electromagnetic interaction are calculated.

The basic equations of the dynamics of the continuous distribution of dislocations analogical to Maxwell's equations are derived in a series of papers I, II, III. The analogy of the elastic and electromagnetic fields is analyzed. In part I the basic equations of the continuous distribution of dislocations are derived for the dynamic case (especially for small deformations and for the Poisson ratio equal to zero in a continuum, infinite with respect to space and time, from the variational problem by means of the formal apparatus of the special theory of relativity.

The first theoretical solution is given of the spinning impact of an imperfectly elastic sphere on a rigid, imperfectly rough plane. The method of solution is based on the general static theory of the impact of rough bodies, elaborated by one of the authors in 1952 [5]. The problem leads to a non-linear differential equation, which can be solved only by an approximate numerical method. The results of the theory are in good agreement with the experiments carried out in 1947 [4].

The process of the propagation of excitation energy in perturbed dielectric crystals with a weak bond between the atoms having zero permanent dipole moment is studied. It is shown that on certain assumptions this process of propagation can be regarded as the motion of a Frenkel exciton in the electrostatic field of the defect. Frenkel's exciton can be characterized in this case as a neutral polarizable particle having induced dipole moment equal to the change in the induced dipole moment of the crystal during the excitation of one of its atoms.
