Equations are derived from the variational principle for a system subjected to an additional non-gravitational force effect, which may be represented by the technical forces imparting to the masses of the system a velocity comparable with the velocity of light and which may change the rest mass of the system, within the framework of the general theory of relativity.

Nuclear emulsions were used to study the energy spectrum and forward-backward asymmetry of neutrons from the Co59(p,n) reaction forE p 6·5 MeV. It was found that the decay of the compound nucleus makes a maximum contribution of 50% to the reaction yield. Energies of some excited states of the Ni59 nucleus were also determined.

The paper discusses the absorption of the energy of a high-frequency field by a magnetic sample from the point of view of the interaction of spin waves with photons and spin waves amongst themselves. A general expression for the form of the absorption curve is derived, using the method known from the quantum theory of radiation and assuming very weak fields.

The instability of spin waves at ferromagnetic resonance is discussed. An equation of the stationary state of spin wavesk0 is derived by means of the quantum theory of spin waves. It is shown when discussing this equation that the concept of the critical uniform precession angle may be obtained when using an approximation which neglects the action of spin wavesk0 backward on their own excitation. We believe we are justified in supposing that, due to this effect, a stable stationary state can exist even above the critical amplitude of uniform precession, given by theories up to now.

A theory is given of a new structure produced when demagnetizing uniaxial single crystals (e.g. magnetoplumbite) in a field normal to thec axis. The experimental results fully support the theory on the assumption that domain structures produced under normal conditions are metastable. Methods are given by which stable structures can be prepared from such metastable ones. On the basis of these results opinions are expressed as to the nucleation of plate and honeycomb structures, produced either by reducing the field from saturation or by cooling below the Curie point.

The Bardeen-Shockley formula for the mobility of an electron or hole in a homopolar semi-conductor is derived in a different way to that in which its authors obtained it. The interaction energy of the electron with the acoustic lattice oscillations is derived in an original way. A new possibility for determining the energy gap is given.

It is shown experimentally that after annealing samples of NaCl the thermoluminescence in the high-temperature maxima not only increases, which is in agreement with the results of other authors, but that simultaneously the thermoemission decreases. It follows from a discussion of the results that this effect is probably caused by the formation of a surface layer, which takes place during the evaporation of the sodium and both prevents the rise of the electrons from the crystal and the vacancies left in it by the sodium increase in the concentration of theV centres and thus the probability of luminescence.

Zusammenfassung Der Einflu\ von Mikrosegregations-Substrukturen auf das plastische Verhalten von Zinkeinkristallen entspricht den allgemeinen Erwartungen in der Weise, da\ die kritische Schubspannung mit wachsender Substrukturendichte zunimmt. Der Verfestigungskoeffizient A nimmt hingegen mit wachsender Substrukturendichte ab. Dabei wird der Verfestigungskoeffizient vom Charakter der Substruktur viel empfindlicher beeinflu\t als die kritische Schubspannung. Es wird angenommen, da\ dieser Einflu\ durch unterschiedlichen Fremdstoffgehalt zustande kommt.

The Gelfand-Levitan equation for the kernelP(r, r) (withrr) is formulated and then applied for determining the scattering potential in the scattering of slow neutrons on protons (for the case when the dependence of the nuclear forces on the spins can be neglected and onlys-scattering need be considered). The potentials obtained are the same as the Bargmann ones, found by a different method.

A thickness dependence of the permittivity ofc-domain barium titanate single crystals was found. The experimental results were explained by means of a model of a dielectric with surface layers. The thickness of the layer and the permittivity of the surface layer and bulk of the crystal were determined.

A new theory of rectangular coils without an iron core is described which amends the old one of Fabry and Bitter. It enables us to compute field intensities in coils having very small openings, which the old theory could not do.

The procedure for determining the accuracy when measuring the parameters of tetragonal and hexagonal lattices is described. The accuracy can easily be calculated for all common methods by means of graphically represented functions. The relations derived can be used as quantitative criteria for the suitability of the combination of lines from which the lattice parameters are to be determined.

The influence of weak ultra-violet irradiation on the brightness waves of electroluminescence is investigated for two types of ZnS-Cuphosphors. The observed effects (increase in brightness in the primary peak and its phase shift, the disappearance of the secondary peak) are explained on the basis of present-day conceptions on electroluminescence.
