A non-complete graph G is called an (n,k)-graph if it is n-connected but GX is not (n−|X|+1)-connected for any X V (G) with |X|≤k. Mader conjectured that for k≥3 the graph K2k+2−(1−factor) is the unique (2k,k)-graph(up to isomorphism). Here we prove this conjecture.  相似文献

We prove that the out-distance sequence {f+(k)} of a vertex-transitive digraph of finite or infinite degree satisfies f+(k+1)≤f+(k)2 for k≥1, where f+(k) denotes the number of vertices at directed distance k from a given vertex. As a corollary, we prove that for a connected vertex-transitive undirected graph of infinite degree d, we have f(k)=d for all k, 1≤k<diam(G). This answers a question by L. Babai.  相似文献

Dedicated to the memory of Paul Erdős A graph G is k-linked if G has at least 2k vertices, and, for any vertices , , ..., , , , ..., , G contains k pairwise disjoint paths such that joins for i = 1, 2, ..., k. We say that G is k-parity-linked if G is k-linked and, in addition, the paths can be chosen such that the parities of their lengths are prescribed. We prove the existence of a function g(k) such that every g(k)-connected graph is k-parity-linked if the deletion of any set of less than 4k-3 vertices leaves a nonbipartite graph. As a consequence, we obtain a result of Erdős–Pósa type for odd cycles in graphs of large connectivity. Also, every -connected graph contains a totally odd -subdivision, that is, a subdivision of in which each edge of corresponds to an odd path, if and only if the deletion of any vertex leaves a nonbipartite graph. It is proved that for every positive integer k, every n-connected graph G of sufficiently large order contains a set W of k vertices such that GW is (n-2)-connected. It is shown that this does not remain true if we add the condition that G(W) is connected.  相似文献

Letf(n) denote the minimal number of edges of a 3-uniform hypergraphG=(V, E) onn vertices such that for every quadrupleYV there existsYeE. Turán conjectured thatf(3k)=k(k−1)(2k−1). We prove that if Turán’s conjecture is correct then there exist at least 2 k−2 non-isomorphic extremal hypergraphs on 3k vertices.  相似文献

A tree is called a k-tree if the maximum degree is at most k. We prove the following theorem, by which a closure concept for spanning k-trees of n-connected graphs can be defined. Let k ≥ 2 and n ≥ 1 be integers, and let u and v be a pair of nonadjacent vertices of an n-connected graph G such that deg G (u) + deg G (v) ≥ |G| − 1 − (k − 2)n, where |G| denotes the order of G. Then G has a spanning k-tree if and only if G + uv has a spanning k-tree.  相似文献

A pathP in a graphG is said to beextendable if there exists a pathP’ inG with the same endvertices asP such thatV(P)⊆V (P’) and |V(P’)|=|V(P)|+1. A graphG ispath extendable if every nonhamiltonian path inG is extendable. We investigate the extent to which known sufficient conditions for a graph to be hamiltonian-connected imply the extendability of paths in the graph. Several theorems are proved: for example, it is shown that ifG is a graph of orderp in which the degree sum of each pair of non-adjacent vertices is at leastp+1 andP is a nonextendable path of orderk inG thenk≤(p+1)/2 and 〈V (P)〉≅K k orK k e. As corollaries of this we deduce that if δ(G)≥(p+2)/2 or if the degree sum of each pair of nonadjacent vertices inG is at least (3p−3)/2 thenG is path extendable, which strengthen results of Williamson [13].  相似文献

Non-Separating Paths in 4-Connected Graphs   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In 1975, Lovász conjectured that for any positive integer k, there exists a minimum positive integer f(k) such that, for any two vertices x, y in any f(k)-connected graph G, there is a path P from x to y in G such that GV(P) is k-connected. A result of Tutte implies f(1) = 3. Recently, f(2) = 5 was shown by Chen et al. and, independently, by Kriesell. In this paper, we show that f(2) = 4 except for double wheels.Received October 17, 2003  相似文献

A tree T is called a k-tree, if the maximum degree of T is at most k. In this paper, we prove that if G is an n-connected graph with independence number at most n + m + 1 (n≥1,nm≥0), then G has a spanning 3-tree T with at most m vertices of degree 3.  相似文献

(3,k)-Factor-Critical Graphs and Toughness   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A graph is (r,k)-factor-critical if the removal of any set of k vertices results in a graph with an r-factor (i.e. an r-regular spanning subgraph). Let t(G) denote the toughness of graph G. In this paper, we show that if t(G)≥4, then G is (3,k)-factor-critical for every non-negative integer k such that n+k even, k<2 t(G)−2 and kn−7. Revised: September 21, 1998  相似文献

A graph G is k-linked if G has at least 2k vertices, and for any 2k vertices x 1,x 2, …, x k ,y 1,y 2, …, y k , G contains k pairwise disjoint paths P 1, …, P k such that P i joins x i and y i for i = 1,2, …, k. We say that G is parity-k-linked if G is k-linked and, in addition, the paths P 1, …, P k can be chosen such that the parities of their length are prescribed. Thomassen [22] was the first to prove the existence of a function f(k) such that every f(k)-connected graph is parity-k-linked if the deletion of any 4k-3 vertices leaves a nonbipartite graph. In this paper, we will show that the above statement is still valid for 50k-connected graphs. This is the first result that connectivity which is a linear function of k guarantees the Erdős-Pósa type result for parity-k-linked graphs. We show that for any k-connected graph having cocircumference c*, there is a cycle which intersects every cocycle of size c*-k + 2 or greater. We use this to show that in a 2-connected graph, there is a family of at most c* cycles for which each edge of the graph belongs to at least two cycles in the family. This settles a question raised by Oxley. A certain result known for cycles and cocycles in graphs is extended to matroids. It is shown that for a k-connected regular matroid having circumference c ≥ 2k if C1 and C2 are disjoint circuits satisfying r(C1)+r(C2)=r(C1C2), then |C1|+|C2|≤2(c-k + 1).  相似文献

For a graphG let ℒ(G)=Σ{1/k contains a cycle of lengthk}. Erdős and Hajnal [1] introduced the real functionf(α)=inf {ℒ (G)|E(G)|/|V(G)|≧α} and suggested to study its properties. Obviouslyf(1)=0. We provef (k+1/k)≧(300k logk)−1 for all sufficiently largek, showing that sparse graphs of large girth must contain many cycles of different lengths.  相似文献

A k-uniform hypergraph is hamiltonian if for some cyclic ordering of its vertex set, every k consecutive vertices form an edge. In 1952 Dirac proved that if the minimum degree in an n-vertex graph is at least n/2 then the graph is hamiltonian. We prove an approximate version of an analogous result for uniform hypergraphs: For every K ≥ 3 and γ > 0, and for all n large enough, a sufficient condition for an n-vertex k-uniform hypergraph to be hamiltonian is that each (k − 1)-element set of vertices is contained in at least (1/2 + γ)n edges. A weighted graph is one in which every edge e is assigned a nonnegative number w(e), called the weight of e. The weight of a cycle is defined as the sum of the weights of its edges. The weighted degree of a vertex is the sum of the weights of the edges incident with it. In this paper, we prove that: Let G be a k-connected weighted graph with k?2. Then G contains either a Hamilton cycle or a cycle of weight at least 2m/(k+1), if G satisfies the following conditions: (1) The weighted degree sum of any k+1 pairwise nonadjacent vertices is at least m; (2) In each induced claw and each induced modified claw of G, all edges have the same weight. This generalizes an early result of Enomoto et al. on the existence of heavy cycles in k-connected weighted graphs.  相似文献

C. Thomassen and M. Szegedy proved the existence of a functionf(s, t) such that the points of anyf(s, t)-connected graph have a decomposition into two non-empty sets such that the subgraphs induced by them ares-connected andt-connected, respectively. We prove, thatf(s, t) ≦ 4s+4t − 13 and examine a similar problem for the minimum degree.  相似文献

Some known results on claw-free graphs are generalized to the larger class of almost claw-free graphs. In this paper, we prove several properties on longest cycles in almost claw-free graphs. In particular, we show the following two results.? (1) Every 2-connected almost claw-free graph on n vertices contains a cycle of length at least min {n, 2δ+4} and the bound 2δ+ 4 is best possible, thereby fully generalizing a result of Matthews and Sumner.? (2) Every 3-connected almost claw-free graph on n vertices contains a cycle of length at least min {n, 4δ}, thereby fully generalizing a result of MingChu Li. Let G = (V (G),E(G)) be a graph with vertex set V (G) and edge set E(G), and g and f two positive integral functions from V (G) to Z+-{1} such that g(v) ≤ f(v) ≤ dG(v) for all vV (G), where dG(v) is the degree of the vertex v. It is shown that every graph G, including both a [g,f]-factor and a hamiltonian path, contains a connected [g,f +1]-factor. This result also extends Kano’s conjecture concerning the existence of connected [k,k+1]-factors in graphs. * The work of this author was supported by NSFC of China under Grant No. 10271065, No. 60373025. † The work of these authors was also supported in part by the US Department of Energy’s Genomes to Life program (http://doegenomestolife.org/) under project, “Carbon Sequestration in Synechococcus sp.: From Molecular Machines to Hierarchical Modeling” (www.genomes2life.org) and by National Science Foundation (NSF/DBI-0354771,NSF/ITR-IIS-0407204).  相似文献

Some problems and results on the distribution of subgraphs in colour-critical graphs are discussed. In section 3 arbitrarily largek-critical graphs withn vertices are constructed such that, in order to reduce the chromatic number tok−2, at leastc k n 2 edges must be removed. In section 4 it is proved that a 4-critical graph withn vertices contains at mostn triangles. Further it is proved that ak-critical graph which is not a complete graph contains a (k−1)-critical graph which is not a complete graph.  相似文献

In this paper, we prove that an m-connected graph G on n vertices has a spanning tree with at most k leaves (for k ≥ 2 and m ≥ 1) if every independent set of G with cardinality m + k contains at least one pair of vertices with degree sum at least nk + 1. This is a common generalization of results due to Broersma and Tuinstra and to Win.  相似文献
