We present results of an investigation into the reactivity of molecularly chemisorbed oxygen with CO on a Au/TiO2 model catalyst at 77 K. We previously discovered that exposing the model catalyst sample to a radio-frequency-generated plasma jet of oxygen results in co-population of both atomically and molecularly chemisorbed oxygen species on the sample. We tested the reactivity of the molecularly chemisorbed oxygen by comparing the CO2 produced from a sample populated with both species to the CO2 produced from a sample that has been cleared of molecularly chemisorbed oxygen employing collision-induced desorption. Samples that are populated with both species consistently result in greater CO2 produced than samples with only atomic oxygen. We interpret this result to indicate that molecularly chemisorbed oxygen on the sample can directly participate in the CO oxidation reaction. The reactivity of molecularly chemisorbed oxygen has been investigated for five different gold coverages (0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.25, and 2 ML), and we observe that there is a greater fractional difference in the CO2 produced (difference between sample populated with both molecularly and atomically adsorbed oxygen and sample populated solely with atomically adsorbed oxygen) for the 1 ML Au coverage than for the other coverages for equivalent oxygen plasma-jet exposures. However, it is not possible to unambiguously conclude that this observation is directly related to a particle size effect on the chemistry since the absolute O(2,a) and O(a) content on the various surfaces is different for all the coverages studied because of the plasma-jet technique that we employed for populating the surfaces with oxygen. Unfortunately, this precludes a direct comparison of the reactivity of molecular oxygen in the carbon monoxide oxidation reaction as a function of gold coverage and hence particle size.  相似文献

We report results on the catalytic oxidation of carbon monoxide (CO) over clean Ir surfaces that are prepared reversibly from the same crystal in situ with different surface morphologies, from planar to nanometer-scale facets of specific crystal orientations and various sizes. Our temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) data show that both planar Ir(210) and faceted Ir(210) are very active for CO oxidation to form CO2. Preadsorbed oxygen promotes the oxidation of CO, whereas high coverages of preadsorbed CO poison the reaction by blocking the surface sites for oxygen adsorption. At low coverages of preadsorbed oxygen (< or = 0.3 ML of O), the temperature Ti for the onset of CO2 desorption decreases with increasing CO coverage. At high coverages of preadsorbed oxygen (> 0.5 ML of O), T(i) is < 330 K and is independent of CO coverage. Moreover, we find clear evidence for structure sensitivity in CO oxidation over clean planar Ir(210) versus that over clean faceted Ir(210): the CO2 desorption rate is sensitive to the surface morphological differences. However, no evidence has been found for size effects in CO oxidation over faceted Ir(210) for average facet size ranging from 5 to 14 nm. Energetically favorable binding sites for O/Ir(210) are characterized using density functional theory (DFT) calculations.  相似文献

Temperature-programmed reaction spectroscopy (TPRS) and direct, isothermal reaction-rate measurements were employed to investigate the oxidation of CO on Pt(111) covered with high concentrations of atomic oxygen. The TPRS results show that oxygen atoms chemisorbed on Pt(111) at coverages just above 0.25 ML (monolayers) are reactive toward coadsorbed CO, producing CO(2) at about 295 K. The uptake of CO on Pt(111) is found to decrease with increasing oxygen coverage beyond 0.25 ML and becomes immeasurable at a surface temperature of 100 K when Pt(111) is partially covered with Pt oxide domains at oxygen coverages above 1.5 ML. The rate of CO oxidation measured as a function of CO beam exposure to the surface exhibits a nearly linear increase toward a maximum for initial oxygen coverages between 0.25 and 0.50 ML and constant surface temperatures between 300 and 500 K. At a fixed CO incident flux, the time required to reach the maximum reaction rate increases as the initial oxygen coverage is increased to 0.50 ML. A time lag prior to the reaction-rate maximum is also observed when Pt oxide domains are present on the surface, but the reaction rate increases more slowly with CO exposure and much longer time lags are observed, indicating that the oxide phase is less reactive toward CO than are chemisorbed oxygen atoms on Pt(111). On the partially oxidized surface, the CO exposure needed to reach the rate maximum increases significantly with increases in both the initial oxygen coverage and the surface temperature. A kinetic model is developed that reproduces the qualitative dependence of the CO oxidation rate on the atomic oxygen coverage and the surface temperature. The model assumes that CO chemisorption and reaction occur only on regions of the surface covered by chemisorbed oxygen atoms and describes the CO chemisorption probability as a decreasing function of the atomic oxygen coverage in the chemisorbed phase. The model also takes into account the migration of oxygen atoms from oxide domains to domains with chemisorbed oxygen atoms. According to the model, the reaction rate initially increases with the CO exposure because the rate of CO chemisorption is enhanced as the coverage of chemisorbed oxygen atoms decreases during reaction. Longer rate delays are predicted for the partially oxidized surface because oxygen migration from the oxide phase maintains high oxygen coverages in the coexisting chemisorbed oxygen phase that hinder CO chemisorption. It is shown that the time evolution of the CO oxidation rate is determined by the relative rates of CO chemisorption and oxygen migration, R(ad) and R(m), respectively, with an increase in the relative rate of oxygen migration acting to inhibit the reaction. We find that the time lag in the reaction rate increases nearly exponentially with the initial oxygen coverage [O](i) (tot) when [O](i) (tot) exceeds a critical value, which is defined as the coverage above which R(ad)R(m) is less than unity at fixed CO incident flux and surface temperature. These results demonstrate that the kinetics for CO oxidation on oxidized Pt(111) is governed by the sensitivity of CO binding and chemisorption on the atomic oxygen coverage and the distribution of surface oxygen phases.

Density functional theory was used to study the CO oxidation catalytic activity of CeO(2)-supported Au nanoparticles (NPs). Experimental observations on CeO(2) show that the surface of CeO(2) is enriched with oxygen vacancies. We compare CO oxidation by a Au(13) NP supported on stoichiometric CeO(2) (Au(13)@CeO(2)-STO) and partially reduced CeO(2) with three vacancies (Au(13)@CeO(2)-3VAC). The structure of the Au(13) NP was chosen to minimize structural rearrangement during CO oxidation. We suggest three CO oxidation mechanisms by Au(13)@CeO(2): CO oxidation by coadsorbed O(2), CO oxidation by a lattice oxygen in CeO(2), and CO oxidation by O(2) bound to a Au-Ce(3+) anchoring site. Oxygen vacancies are shown to open a new CO oxidation pathway by O(2) bound to a Au-Ce(3+) anchoring site. Our results provide a design strategy for CO oxidation on supported Au catalysts. We suggest lowering the vacancy formation energy of the supporting oxide, and using an easily reducible oxide to increase the concentration of reduced metal ions, which act as anchoring sites for O(2) molecules.  相似文献

In the present work, ethanol electrooxidation on a Pt(100) electrode modified by different coverage degrees of osmium nanoislands obtained by spontaneous depositions, was extensively studied employing in situ FTIR spectroscopy. A collection of spectra of the ethanol adsorption and oxidation processes was acquired during the first series of a positive potential step, to determine the intermediate species, as well as the main products formed. The spectroscopic results obtained were correlated with conventional electrochemical results obtained by cyclic voltammetry. It was shown that the catalytic activity of Pt(100) for ethanol oxidation increases significantly after osmium deposition and that the mechanistic pathway for this reaction depends directly on the osmium coverage degree. Thus, for low osmium coverage (theta;( Os) up to 0.15) the formation of CO as an intermediate was favored and hence the full oxidation of adsorbed ethanol to CO(2) was increased. For higher osmium coverages (theta;(Os) up to 0.33), the higher the coverage is, the more the direct ethanol oxidation to acetaldehyde and acetic acid is favored. For osmium coverage degree of 0.40, the catalytic activity of the electrode for ethanol oxidation decreased. On an almost complete osmium layer (theta;(Os) = 0.92) obtained by electrodeposition at 50 mV vs reversible hydrogen electrode, the catalytic activity for ethanol oxidation shows a much lower value.  相似文献

The influence of oxygen precoverage on the bonding geometry of methoxide on Ru(001) was studied using the isotopically labeled molecule CHD2OH by reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS). This molecule is an excellent model because the vibrational spectra of CHD2O- may be unambiguously correlated with the adsorption configuration. For Ru(001)--O layers with an effective oxygen coverage (theta0) between 0.25 and 0.6 ML (ML=monolayer), the influence of the oxygen precoverage was shown to vary with the initial methanol exposure. For an extremely low dose of [D2]methanol (0.01 L; L=Langmuir, 1 L=10(-6) torr s), at 90 K, no oxygen-coverage effects were detected on the geometry of [D2]methoxide: it adsorbs in an upright orientation (pseudo-C(3v) local symmetry), just as on clean Ru(001). An increase in the methanol exposure to 0.1 L, at the same temperature, results in the formation of a disordered layer of tilted methoxide: for theta(O)=0.25 ML, C(s)/C1 and intrinsic C1 configurations are present on the surface, whereas for theta(O)> or =0.5 ML, only the former species were identified. The thermal activation of these tilted layers to 105 K results in a lower coverage of upright methoxide for any oxygen precoverage, coadsorbed with decomposition products, as confirmed by the detection of adsorbed formaldehyde and, on the denser oxygen layer (theta(O)=0.6 ML), formate. The influence of the oxygen precoverage becomes determinant when annealing a [D2]methanol multilayer to 105 K: for theta(O)=0.25 ML, the RAIR spectrum correlates with a disordered layer of tilted methoxide and formaldehyde, whereas for theta(O)=0.6 ML upright methoxide, formate, and carbon monoxide were identified. On clean Ru(001), for methanol exposures > or =0.1 L, the C(3v) methoxide configuration was never attained upon thermal activation.  相似文献

The palladium-catalyzed liquid-phase reaction of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde was investigated in the presence and absence of oxygen by attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy. The 5 wt % Pd/Al2O3 catalyst was fixed in a flow-through ATR-IR cell serving as a continuous-flow reactor. The reaction conditions (cyclohexane solvent, 323 K, 1 bar) were set in the range commonly applied in the heterogeneous catalytic aerobic oxidation of alcohols. The in situ ATR-IR study of the solid-liquid interface revealed a complex reaction network, including dehydrogenation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde, decarbonylation of benzaldehyde, oxidation of hydrogen and CO on Pd, and formation of benzoic acid catalyzed by both Pd and Al2O3. Continuous formation of CO and its oxidative removal by air resulted in significant steady-state CO coverage of Pd during oxidation of benzyl alcohol. Unexpectedly, benzoic acid formed already in the early stage of the reaction and adsorbed strongly (irreversibly) on the basic sites of Al2O3 and thus remained undetectable in the effluent. This observation questions the reliability of product distributions conventionally determined from the liquid phase. The occurrence of the hydrogenolysis of the C-O bond of benzyl alcohol and formation of toluene indicates that Pd was present in a reduced state (Pd0) even in the presence of oxygen, in agreement with the dehydrogenation mechanism of alcohol oxidation.  相似文献

The catalytic oxidation of CO was performed over Au/TiO(2) under UV irradiation in the presence of H(2) in different reaction systems. It was found that the introduction of H(2) enhanced the CO thermocatalytic oxidation in a CO pre-introduced system (CO/O(2)vs. CO/H(2)/O(2)), but suppressed that in an O(2) pre-introduced (O(2)/CO vs. O(2)/H(2)/CO) system. Although the CO oxidation in both CO/H(2)/O(2) and O(2)/H(2)/CO systems could be remarkably enhanced under UV irradiation, the oxidation of H(2) was suppressed under UV irradiation. It was proposed that the dissociative chemisorption H ([triple bond]Ti-H) at surface oxygen vacancy sites of TiO(2) could act as both the electron-acceptors for the photogeneration electrons and the electron-donors for the chemisorbed O(2) at TiO(2), and thus enhance the CO oxidation during the coinstantaneous process of thermocatalysis and photocatalysis. The suppression of H(2) thermocatalytic oxidation under UV irradiation might be ascribed to the electron transfer effect, i.e., the dissociative chemisorption H on Au (Au-H) could be desorbed at the H(2) molecule via accepting the photogenerated electrons from TiO(2).

Bulk gold has long been regarded as a noble metal, having very low chemical and catalytic activity. However, metal oxide-supported gold particles, particularly those that are less than 5 nm in diameter, have been found to have remarkable catalytic properties. In this study we show that impinging gas-phase CO molecules react readily with oxygen adatoms preadsorbed on Au/TiO(2)(110) to produce CO(2) even under conditions in which the sample is cryogenically cooled. Gold particle size seems to have little effect on the CO oxidation reaction when oxygen adatoms are preadsorbed. We also show that as the oxygen adatom coverage increases, the rate of CO oxidation decreases on Au/TiO(2) at cryogenic temperatures.  相似文献

Catalytic CO oxidation on the RuO(2)(110) surface was studied at 300 K by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), high-resolution electron-energy-loss spectroscopy (HREELS), and thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS). Upon repeatedly exposing the surface to several 10 L of CO and O(2) at 300 K, STM shows that unreactive features accumulate with each CO and O(2) titration run. HREELS and TDS show formation of increasing amounts of H(2)O, retarded formation of O-cus atoms and incomplete removal of CO-bridge molecules during O(2) dosing, and a changing ratio of single- and double-bonded CO-bridge molecules. It is concluded that H(2)O (presumably from the residual gas) is accumulating at the Ru-cus sites thus blocking them, so that the dissociative adsorption of oxygen is prevented and the CO oxidation reaction is suppressed. Some 10% CO- bridge remains on the surface even during oxygen exposure. Consistent with this interpretation, deactivation of the surface is suppressed at 350 K, at the onset of H(2)O desorption.  相似文献

Transient state kinetics of the catalytic oxidation of CO with O2 on Pd‐surfaces has been measured under isothermal conditions by using a molecular beam approach. Systematic studies were carried out as a function of reaction temperature and CO+O2 composition. With sufficient kinetic evidence, we have demonstrated the positive influence of subsurface oxygen towards CO‐adsorption and oxidation to CO2 at high temperatures (600–900 K) on Pd‐surfaces, and the likely electronic nature of the surface changes with oxygen in the subsurface. These studies also provide a direct proof for CO‐adsorption with a significantly reactive sticking coefficient at high temperatures on Pd‐surfaces exhibiting a significant subsurface O‐coverage.  相似文献

The reactivities of the stoichiometric and partially reduced rutile TiO2(110) surfaces towards oxygen adsorption and carbon monoxide oxidation have been studied by means of periodic density functional theory calculations within the Car-Parrinello approach. O2 adsorption as well as CO oxidation are found to take place only in the presence of surface oxygen vacancies (partially reduced surface). The oxidation of CO by molecularly adsorbed O2 at the O-vacancy site is found to have an activation energy of about 0.4 eV. When the adsorbed O2 is dissociated, the resulting adatoms can oxidize incoming gas-phase CO molecules with no barrier. In all studied cases, once CO is oxidized to form CO2, the resulting surface is defect-free and no catalytic cycle can be established.  相似文献

High-resolution x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to study the kinetics of the CO oxidation reaction on a Pt(111) surface in situ. The study focuses on the interaction of a preadsorbed p(2x2) layer of atomic oxygen with CO dosed using a supersonic molecular beam. Measurements of O 1s and C 1s spectra at 120 K show that CO adsorbs on the oxygen precovered substrate, but no reaction occurs. A maximum CO coverage of 0.23 ML (monolayer) is observed, with CO exclusively bound on on-top sites. In accordance with the literature, bridge sites are blocked by the presence of atomic oxygen. The reaction of CO with preadsorbed O to CO(2) is studied isothermally in a temperature range between 275 and 305 K. The reaction rate initially increases with CO pressure, but saturates at 9x10(-7) mbar. The data indicate that a certain amount of disordered oxygen within the p(2x2) layer acts as a starting point of the reaction and for a given temperature reacts with a higher rate than O in the well-ordered oxygen p(2x2) phase. For the reaction of CO with this ordered phase, the results confirm the assumption of a reaction mechanism, which is restricted to the edges of compact oxygen islands. The activation energy of the reaction is determined to (0.53+/-0.04) eV, with a prefactor of 4.7x10(6+/-0.7) s(-1).  相似文献
