We develop a convergence theory for two level and multilevel additive Schwarz domain decomposition methods for elliptic and parabolic problems on general unstructured meshes in two and three dimensions. The coarse and fine grids are assumed only to be shape regular, and the domains formed by the coarse and fine grids need not be identical. In this general setting, our convergence theory leads to completely local bounds for the condition numbers of two level additive Schwarz methods, which imply that these condition numbers are optimal, or independent of fine and coarse mesh sizes and subdomain sizes if the overlap amount of a subdomain with its neighbors varies proportionally to the subdomain size. In particular, we will show that additive Schwarz algorithms are still very efficient for nonselfadjoint parabolic problems with only symmetric, positive definite solvers both for local subproblems and for the global coarse problem. These conclusions for elliptic and parabolic problems improve our earlier results in [12, 15, 16]. Finally, the convergence theory is applied to multilevel additive Schwarz algorithms. Under some very weak assumptions on the fine mesh and coarser meshes, e.g., no requirements on the relation between neighboring coarse level meshes, we are able to derive a condition number bound of the orderO(2 L 2), where = max1lL(h l +l– 1)/ l,h l is the element size of thelth level mesh, l the overlap of subdomains on thelth level mesh, andL the number of mesh levels.The work was partially supported by the NSF under contract ASC 92-01266, and ONR under contract ONR-N00014-92-J-1890. New local and global error bounds are given for both nonmonotone and monotone linear complementarity problems. Comparisons of various residuals used in these error bounds are given. Preconditioned iterative methods for numerical solution of large matrix eigenvalue problems are increasingly gaining importance in various application areas, ranging from material sciences to data mining. Some of them, e.g., those using multilevel preconditioning for elliptic differential operators or graph Laplacian eigenvalue problems, exhibit almost optimal complexity in practice; i.e., their computational costs to calculate a fixed number of eigenvalues and eigenvectors grow linearly with the matrix problem size. Theoretical justification of their optimality requires convergence rate bounds that do not deteriorate with the increase of the problem size. Such bounds were pioneered by E. D’yakonov over three decades ago, but to date only a handful have been derived, mostly for symmetric eigenvalue problems. Just a few of known bounds are sharp. One of them is proved in doi: 10.1016/S0024-3795(01)00461-X for the simplest preconditioned eigensolver with a fixed step size. The original proof has been greatly simplified and shortened in doi: 10.1137/080727567 by using a gradient flow integration approach. In the present work, we give an even more succinct proof, using novel ideas based on Karush–Kuhn–Tucker theory and nonlinear programming.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider a non-overlapping domain decomposition method combined with the characteristic method for solving optimal control problems governed by linear convection–diffusion equations. The whole domain is divided into non-overlapping subdomains, and the global optimal control problem is decomposed into the local problems in these subdomains. The integral mean method is utilized for the diffusion term to present an explicit flux calculation on the inter-domain boundary in order to communicate the local problems on the interfaces between subdomains. The convection term is discretized along the characteristic direction. We establish the fully parallel and discrete schemes for solving these local problems. A priori error estimates in \(L^2\)-norm are derived for the state, co-state and control variables. Finally, we present numerical experiments to show the validity of the schemes and verify the derived theoretical results.  相似文献

Optimization problems involving a finite number of decision variables and an infinite number of constraints are referred to as semi-infinite programs (SIPs). Existing numerical methods for solving nonlinear SIPs make strong assumptions on the properties of the feasible set, e.g., convexity and/or regularity, or solve a discretized approximation which only guarantees a lower bound to the true solution value of the SIP. Here, a general, deterministic algorithm for solving semi-infinite programs to guaranteed global optimality is presented. A branch-and-bound (B&B) framework is used to generate convergent sequences of upper and lower bounds on the SIP solution value. The upper-bounding problem is generated by replacing the infinite number of real-valued constraints with a finite number of constrained inclusion bounds; the lower-bounding problem is formulated as a convex relaxation of a discretized approximation to the SIP. The SIP B&B algorithm is shown to converge finitely to –optimality when the subdivision and discretization procedures used to formulate the node subproblems are known to retain certain convergence characteristics. Other than the properties assumed by globally-convergent B&B methods (for finitely-constrained NLPs), this SIP algorithm makes only one additional assumption: For every minimizer x* of the SIP there exists a sequence of Slater points xn for which (cf. Section 5.4). Numerical results for test problems in the SIP literature are presented. The exclusion test and a modified upper-bounding problem are also investigated as heuristic approaches for alleviating the computational cost of solving a nonlinear SIP to guaranteed global optimality.  相似文献

The simplicial homology global optimisation (SHGO) algorithm is a general purpose global optimisation algorithm based on applications of simplicial integral homology and combinatorial topology. SHGO approximates the homology groups of a complex built on a hypersurface homeomorphic to a complex on the objective function. This provides both approximations of locally convex subdomains in the search space through Sperner’s lemma and a useful visual tool for characterising and efficiently solving higher dimensional black and grey box optimisation problems. This complex is built up using sampling points within the feasible search space as vertices. The algorithm is specialised in finding all the local minima of an objective function with expensive function evaluations efficiently which is especially suitable to applications such as energy landscape exploration. SHGO was initially developed as an improvement on the topographical global optimisation (TGO) method. It is proven that the SHGO algorithm will always outperform TGO on function evaluations if the objective function is Lipschitz smooth. In this paper SHGO is applied to non-convex problems with linear and box constraints with bounds placed on the variables. Numerical experiments on linearly constrained test problems show that SHGO gives competitive results compared to TGO and the recently developed Lc-DISIMPL algorithm as well as the PSwarm, LGO and DIRECT-L1 algorithms. Furthermore SHGO is compared with the TGO, basinhopping (BH) and differential evolution (DE) global optimisation algorithms over a large selection of black-box problems with bounds placed on the variables from the SciPy benchmarking test suite. Summary. The - spectral element discretization of the Stokes equation gives rise to an ill-conditioned, indefinite, symmetric linear system for the velocity and pressure degrees of freedom. We propose a domain decomposition method which involves the solution of a low-order global, and several local problems, related to the vertices, edges, and interiors of the subdomains. The original system is reduced to a symmetric equation for the velocity, which can be solved with the conjugate gradient method. We prove that the condition number of the iteration operator is bounded from above by , where C is a positive constant independent of the degree N and the number of subdomains, and is the inf-sup condition of the pair -. We also consider the stationary Navier-Stokes equations; in each Newton step, a non-symmetric indefinite problem is solved using a Schwarz preconditioner. By using an especially designed low-order global space, and the solution of local problems analogous to those decribed above for the Stokes equation, we are able to present a complete theory for the method. We prove that the number of iterations of the GMRES method, at each Newton step, is bounded from above by . The constant C does not depend on the number of subdomains or N, and it does not deteriorate as the Newton iteration proceeds. This paper is concerned with the stability of rational one-step approximations of semigroups. Particular emphasis is laid on long-term stability bounds. The analysis is based on a general Banach space framework and allows variable stepsize sequences. Under reasonable assumptions on the stepsize sequence, asymptotic stability bounds for general semigroups are derived. The bounds are typical in the sense that they contain, in general, a factor that grows with the number of steps. Under additional hypotheses on the approximation, more favorable stability bounds are obtained for the subclass of holomorphic semigroups.

This paper presents a family of projected descent direction algorithms with inexact line search for solving large-scale minimization problems subject to simple bounds on the decision variables. The global convergence of algorithms in this family is ensured by conditions on the descent directions and line search. Whenever a sequence constructed by an algorithm in this family enters a sufficiently small neighborhood of a local minimizer satisfying standard second-order sufficiency conditions, it gets trapped and converges to this local minimizer. Furthermore, in this case, the active constraint set at is identified in a finite number of iterations. This fact is used to ensure that the rate of convergence to a local minimizer, satisfying standard second-order sufficiency conditions, depends only on the behavior of the algorithm in the unconstrained subspace. As a particular example, we present projected versions of the modified Polak–Ribière conjugate gradient method and the limited-memory BFGS quasi-Newton method that retain the convergence properties associated with those algorithms applied to unconstrained problems.  相似文献

This work is concerned with the development of inverse-type inequalities for piecewise polynomial functions and, in particular, functions belonging to -finite element spaces. The cases of positive and negative Sobolev norms are considered for both continuous and discontinuous finite element functions.The inequalities are explicit both in the local polynomial degree and the local mesh size.The assumptions on the -finite element spaces are very weak, allowing anisotropic (shape-irregular) elements and varying polynomial degree across elements. Finally, the new inverse-type inequalities are used to derive bounds for the condition number of symmetric stiffness matrices of -boundary element method discretisations of integral equations, with element-wise discontinuous basis functions constructed via scaled tensor products of Legendre polynomials.

In this paper, we provide tight estimates for the divisor class number of hyperelliptic function fields. We extend the existing methods to any hyperelliptic function field and improve the previous bounds by a factor proportional to with the help of new results. We thus obtain a faster method of computing regulators and class numbers. Furthermore, we provide experimental data and heuristics on the distribution of the class number within the bounds on the class number. These heuristics are based on recent results by Katz and Sarnak. Our numerical results and the heuristics imply that our approximation is in general far better than the bounds suggest.

This paper provides a rigorous asymptotic analysis and justification of upper and lower confidence bounds proposed by Dantzig and Infanger (A probabilistic lower bound for two-stage stochastic programs, Stanford University, CA, 1995) for an iterative sampling-based decomposition algorithm, introduced by Dantzig and Glynn (Ann. Oper. Res. 22:1–21, 1990) and Infanger (Ann. Oper. Res. 39:41–67, 1992), for solving two-stage stochastic programs. The paper provides confidence bounds in the presence of both independent sampling across iterations, and when common samples are used across different iterations. Confidence bounds for sample-average approximation then follow as a special case. Extensions of the theory to cover use of variance reduction and the dropping of cuts are also presented. An extensive empirical investigation of the performance of these bounds establishes that the bounds perform reasonably on realistic problems.

Stochastic local search is a successful technique in diverse areas of combinatorial optimisation and is predominantly applied to hard problems. When dealing with individual instances of hard problems, gathering information about specific properties of instances in a pre-processing phase is helpful for an appropriate parameter adjustment of local search-based procedures. In the present paper, we address parameter estimations in the context of landscapes induced by k-SAT instances: at first, we utilise a sampling method devised by Garnier and Kallel in 2002 for approximations of the number of local maxima in landscapes generated by individual k-SAT instances and a simple neighbourhood relation. The objective function is given by the number of satisfied clauses. The procedure provides good approximations of the actual number of local maxima, with a deviation typically around 10%. Secondly, we provide a method for obtaining upper bounds for the average number of local maxima in k-SAT instances. The method allows us to obtain the upper bound \(2^{n-O(\sqrt{n/k})}\) for the average number of local maxima, if m is in the region of 2 k · n/k.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a theory for bounding the minimum eigenvalues, maximum eigenvalues, and condition numbers of stiffness matrices arising from the -version of finite element analysis. Bounds are derived for the eigenvalues and the condition numbers, which are valid for stiffness matrices based on a set of general basis functions that can be used in the -version. For a set of hierarchical basis functions satisfying the usual local support condition that has been popularly used in the -version, explicit bounds are derived for the minimum eigenvalues, maximum eigenvalues, and condition numbers of stiffness matrices. We prove that the condition numbers of the stiffness matrices grow like , where is the number of dimensions. Our results disprove a conjecture of Olsen and Douglas in which the authors assert that ``regardless of the choice of basis, the condition numbers grow like or faster". Numerical results are also presented which verify that our theoretical bounds are correct.

Global Interval Methods for Local Nonsmooth Optimization   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
An interval method for determining local solutions of nonsmooth unconstrained optimization problems is discussed. The objective function is assumed to be locally Lipschitz and to have appropriate interval inclusions. The method consists of two parts, a local search and a global continuation and termination. The local search consists of a globally convergent descent algorithm showing similarities to -bundle methods. While -bundle methods use polytopes as inner approximations of the -subdifferentials, which are the main tools of almost all bundle concepts, our method uses axes parallel boxes as outer approximations of the -subdifferentials. The boxes are determined almost automatically with inclusion techniques of interval arithmetic. The dimension of the boxes is equal to the dimension of the problem and remains constant during the whole computation. The application of boxes does not suffer from the necessity to invest methodical and computational efforts to adapt the polytopes to the latest state of the computation as well as to simplify them when the number of vertices becomes too large, as is the case with the polytopes. The second part of the method applies interval techniques of global optimization to the approximative local solution obtained from the search of the first part in order to determine guaranteed error bounds or to improve the solution if necessary. We present prototype algorithms for both parts of the method as well as a complete convergence theory for them and demonstrate how outer approximations can be obtained.  相似文献

We give new bounds for the number of integral points on elliptic curves. The method may be said to interpolate between approaches via diophantine techniques and methods based on quasi-orthogonality in the Mordell-Weil lattice. We apply our results to break previous bounds on the number of elliptic curves of given conductor and the size of the -torsion part of the class group of a quadratic field. The same ideas can be used to count rational points on curves of higher genus.

This paper concerns singular value decomposition (SVD)-based computable formulas and bounds for the condition number of the total least squares (TLS) problem. For the TLS problem with the coefficient matrix $A$ and the right-hand side $b$ , a new closed formula is presented for the condition number. Unlike an important result in the literature that uses the SVDs of both $A$ and $[A,\ b]$ , our formula only requires the SVD of $[A,\ b]$ . Based on the closed formula, both lower and upper bounds for the condition number are derived. It is proved that they are always sharp and estimate the condition number accurately. A few lower and upper bounds are further established that involve at most the smallest two singular values of $A$ and of $[A,\ b]$ . Tightness of these bounds is discussed, and numerical experiments are presented to confirm our theory and to demonstrate the improvement of our upper bounds over the two upper bounds due to Golub and Van Loan as well as Baboulin and Gratton. Such lower and upper bounds are particularly useful for large scale TLS problems since they require the computation of only a few singular values of $A$ and $[A, \ b]$ other than all the singular values of them.  相似文献

We obtain some effective lower and upper bounds for the number of (n,k)-MDS linear codes over q. As a consequence, one obtains an asymptotic formula for this number. These results also apply for the number of inequivalent representations over q of the uniform matroid or, alternately, the number of q-rational points of certain open strata of Grassmannians. The techniques used in the determination of bounds for the number of MDS codes are applied to deduce several geometric properties of certain sections of Grassmannians by coordinate hyperplanes.  相似文献

In order to generate valid convex lower bounding problems for nonconvex twice-differentiable optimization problems, a method that is based on second-order information of general twice-differentiable functions is presented. Using interval Hessian matrices, valid lower bounds on the eigenvalues of such functions are obtained and used in constructing convex underestimators. By solving several nonlinear example problems, it is shown that the lower bounds are sufficiently tight to ensure satisfactory convergence of the BB, a branch and bound algorithm which relies on this underestimation procedure [3].  相似文献
