A well-known result on spectral variation of a Hermitian matrix due to Mirsky is the following: Let and be two Hermitian matrices, and let and be their eigenvalues arranged in ascending order. Then for any unitarily invariant norm . In this paper, we generalize this to the perturbation theory for diagonalizable matrix pencils with real spectra. The much studied case of definite pencils is included in this.

An everyday example of a nonholonomic mechanical system is a pencil rolling on an inclined plane. A question of Mazur asks whether for any non-constant elliptic fibration {Er}rQ, the set {rQ:rank(Er(Q))>0}, if infinite, is dense in R (with respect to the Euclidean topology). This has been proved to be true for the family of quadratic twists of a fixed elliptic curve by a quadratic or a cubic polynomial. Here we settle Mazur's question affirmatively for the general quadratic and cubic fibrations. Moreover we show that our method works when Q is replaced by any real number field.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to solve the inverse problem for a quadratic pencil of Sturm-Liouville operator on a finite interval. By using the Hochstadt's method, it is shown that the potential function can be given from two spectras as uniquely. Later, by generalizing this result, the Hochstadt's theorem which is related to the structure of difference for the potential functions is obtained.  相似文献

We propose a generalization of the structured doubling algorithm to compute invariant subspaces of structured matrix pencils that arise in the context of solving linear quadratic optimal control problems. The new algorithm is designed to attain better accuracy when the classical Riccati equation approach for the solution of the optimal control problem is not well suited because the stable and unstable invariant subspaces are not well separated (because of eigenvalues near or on the imaginary axis) or in the case when the Riccati solution does not exist at all. We analyze the convergence of the method and compare the new method with the classical structured doubling algorithm as well as some structured QR methods. This paper gives normwise and componentwise perturbation analyses for the Q‐factor of the QR factorization of the matrix A with full column rank when A suffers from an additive perturbation. Rigorous perturbation bounds are derived on the projections of the perturbation of the Q‐factor in the range of A and its orthogonal complement. These bounds overcome a serious shortcoming of the first‐order perturbation bounds in the literature and can be used safely. From these bounds, identical or equivalent first‐order perturbation bounds in the literature can easily be derived. When A is square and nonsingular, tighter and simpler rigorous perturbation bounds on the perturbation of the Q‐factor are presented. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A generalization of the concept of eigenvalue is introduced for a matrix pencil and it is called eigenpencil; an eigenpencil is a pencil itself and it contains part of the spectral information of the matrix pencil. A Wielandt type deflation procedure for regular matrix pencils is developed, using eigenpencils and supposing that they can have both finite and infinite eigenvalues. In this paper we present an algorithm, parallel in nature, for finding eigenvalues of a symmetric definite tridiagonal matrix pencil. Our algorithm employs the determinant evaluation, split-and-merge strategy and Laguerre's iteration. Numerical results on both single and multiprocessor computers are presented which show that our algorithm is reliable, efficient and accurate. In this paper, we investigate the perturbation problem for the Moore–Penrose bounded quasi-linear projection generalized inverses of a closed linear operaters in Banach space. By the method of the perturbation analysis of bounded quasi-linear operators, we obtain an explicit perturbation theorem and error estimates for the Moore–Penrose bounded quasi-linear generalized inverse of closed linear operator under the T-bounded perturbation, which not only extend some known results on the perturbation of the oblique projection generalized inverse of closed linear operators, but also extend some known results on the perturbation of the Moore–Penrose metric generalized inverse of bounded linear operators in Banach spaces.  相似文献

The perturbation sensitivity and its influence on the limit loads of shells are widely discussed phenomena. Both phenomena may be classified with respect to the type of perturbation. As perturbations influence the stability of shells, the identification of unfavourable perturbations is essential. The perturbation energy concept enables to identify unfavourable non–initial perturbation loads and to evaluate the perturbation sensitivity of fundamental states by the perturbation energy. This measure is also the basis for a load–level–specific optimisation of the perturbation sensitivity. In this paper, inverse spectra problems for a differential pencil are studied. By using the approach similar to those in Hochstadt and Lieberman (1978) [14] and Ramm (2000) [26], we prove that (1) if p(x) (or q(x)) is full given on the interval [0,π], then a set of values of eigenfunctions at the mid-point of the interval [0,π] and one spectrum suffice to determine q(x) (or p(x)) on the interval [0,π] and all parameters in the boundary conditions; (2) if p(x) (or q(x)) is full given on the interval [0,π], then some information on eigenfunctions at some internal point and parts of two spectra suffice to determine q(x) (or p(x)) on the interval [0,π] and all parameters in the boundary conditions.  相似文献

udy the perturbation theory of structured matrices under structured rank one perturbations, and then focus on several classes of complex matrices. Generic Jordan structures of perturbed matrices are identified. It is shown that the perturbation behavior of the Jordan structures in the case of singular J-Hamiltonian matrices is substantially different from the corresponding theory for unstructured generic rank one perturbation as it has been studied in [18, 28, 30, 31]. Thus a generic structured perturbation would not be generic if considered as an unstructured perturbation. In other settings of structured matrices, the generic perturbation behavior of the Jordan structures, within the confines imposed by the structure, follows the pattern of that of unstructured perturbations.  相似文献

Given a cubic pencil, an addition of lines can be defined in order to construct generalized principal lattices. In this paper we show the converse: the lines defining a generalized principal lattice belong to the same cubic pencil, which is unique for degrees ≥ 4. In this paper, the authors study partial inverse nodal problems for differential pencils on a star-shaped graph. We firstly show that the potential on each edge can be uniquely determined by twin-dense nodal subsets on some interior intervals under certain conditions. Without any nodal information on some potential on the fixed edge, we may add some spectral information to guarantee these uniqueness theorems. We still consider the case of arbitrary intervals having the internal vertex. In particular, we pose and solve a new partial inverse nodal problem for differential pencils on the star-shaped graph from the Weyl m-function and the theory concerning densities of zeros of entire functions.  相似文献

Bolyai Soc Math Stud 19 (2008) 205–218) provide a strong answer to the finite field analog of the classical Kakeya problem, which asks for the minimum size of a point set in an affine plane π that contains a line in every direction.
