Polycaprolactone (PCL) is widely used in biomedical applications as electrospun fibers or porous foams. As PCL is synthetic polymer, many researchers have explored blends of PCL–gelatin to combine mechanical and bioactive properties of individual components. High pressure carbon dioxide (CO2) has been studied to foam and impregnate many biocompatible polymers. In case of PCL–gelatin blends, certain compositions can be swelled reversibly under high pressure CO2 without permanent deformation. This allows successful impregnation of PCL–gelatin blends under CO2. This study summarizes effect of different treatments adopted during impregnation process including high pressure CO2 on several blend compositions of PCL–gelatin blends. Stress relaxation, polymer melting and dissolution were observed during several treatments which affects porosity and scaffold structure significantly. Results summarized in this study will aid in optimum selection of PCL–gelatin blend composition for biomedical applications. Furthermore, CO2 solubility in polymers is restricted due to thermodynamic limitations but can be altered in the presence of a co-solvent to produce better foams. PCL can be foamed using supercritical CO2. However, CO2 foaming of PCL–gelatin blend becomes challenging to simultaneous swelling of PCL and compression of gelatin providing blend structural stability. This study has demonstrated ability of supercritical CO2 to foam PCL–gelatin blends in presence of water to create porous structure. These foams were subjected post-fabrication crosslinking and supercritical CO2 without losing porosity of foams. Thus, creating a strategy to use environmentally benign processes to fabricate, crosslink and impregnate porous scaffolds for biomedical applications.  相似文献

Poly(ϵ-caprolactone) was chemically modified by using dicumyl peroxide from 0.25 to 2 % (w/w) and the effects of molecular architecture on the density and morphology of PCL foams were examined. The polymer was first blended with dicumyl peroxide at a low temperature (80°C), to prevent premature peroxide decomposition. The peroxide modification was then performed at different temperatures, from 110°C to 150°C. The reaction kinetic was followed by measuring the dynamical rheological properties of the melt in isothermal experiments by using a parallel plate rheometer. The evolution of the macromolecular structure during the chemical reaction was followed by analyzing the time evolution of the complex viscosity. Foams were prepared from the peroxide modified PCL with a batch foaming process using nitrogen as the foaming agent under different process conditions. As expected, the increase of the molecular modification led to a shift towards higher temperatures of the foaming window and, moreover, influenced the viscoelastic behavior of the expanding polymeric matrix so that the final foam properties are affected.  相似文献

In this work, hydrophobic polyurethane foam was prepared using hy-drosilicone oil-grafted polybutadiene as soft segment via foaming technology. It was found that the hydrophobic polyurethane foams exhibited good hydrophobic capability and were regenerated easily. Of great interest, the hydrophobic polyurethane foams expand in contact with the oils. This indicates that the process of sorption by the hydrophobic polyurethane foams involves both the filling of the pores with oils and the absorption of oils by the polymer regions (polyurethane elastomer skeleton), and the adsorption capacity of the hydrophobic polyurethane foams can be enhanced by the swelling of the polyurethane elastomer skeleton. We can use this finding to improve the adsorption capacity of the hydrophobic polyurethane foams without merely changing the porosity. The effect of the swelling property of the hydrophobic polyurethane foams on the sorption capacity was further investigated. The results suggest that the hydrophobic polyurethane foams are promising in the application of oil spill recovery.  相似文献

The most important mechanical feature of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) foams applied in bone tissue engineering as a scaffold, has been investigated as a function of irradiation dose. Radiation is proposed for the sterilization of the polymer before the implantation. Polycaprolactone scaffold foams were obtained by combination of compression molding and particulate leaching techniques. The porogen was changed in the range 74–96 w% and the irradiation dose was varied from 25 to 150 kGy. Our results show that yield strength is not a function of radiation dose, but is rather influenced by the porosity, while the critical strain is mainly dependent on the dose. All these together mean that the modulus of the elasticity of PCL foams is dependent on both the porosity and the dose.  相似文献

The open-cell structure foams of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE)/multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) composites are prepared by using supercritical carbon dioxide (sc-CO2) as a foaming agent. The effects of processing parameters (foaming temperature, saturation pressure, and depressurization rate) and the addition of MWCNTs on the evolution of cell opening are studied systematically. For LLDPE foaming, the foaming temperature and saturation pressure are two key factors for preparing open-cell foams. An increase in temperature and pressure promotes both the cell wall thinning and cell rupture, because a high temperature results in a decrease in the viscosity of the polymer, and a high pressure leads to a larger amount of cell nucleation. Moreover, for the given temperature and pressure, the high pressurization rate results in a high pressure gradient, favoring cell rupture. For LLDPE/MWCNTs foaming, the addition of MWCNTs not only promotes the cell heterogeneous nucleation, but also prevents the cell collapse during cell opening, which is critical to achieve the open-cell structures with small cell size and high cell density.  相似文献

We study the effect of two cationic polymers, with trade names Jaguar C13s and Merquat 100, on the rheological properties of foams stabilized with a mixture of anionic and zwitterionic surfactants (sodium lauryloxyethylene sulfate and cocoamidopropyl betaine). A series of five cosurfactants are used to compare the effect of these polymers on foaming systems with high and low surface dilatational moduli. The experiments revealed that the addition of Jaguar to the foaming solutions leads to (1) a significant increase of the foam yield stress for all systems studied, (2) the presence of consecutive maximum and minimum in the stress vs shear rate rheological curve for foams stabilized by cosurfactants with a high surface modulus (these systems cannot be described by the Herschel-Bulkley model anymore), and (3) the presence of significant foam-wall yield stress for all foaming solutions. These effects are explained with the formation of polymer bridges between the neighboring bubbles in slowly sheared foams (for inside foam friction) and between the bubbles and the confining solid wall (for foam-wall friction). Upon addition of 150 mM NaCl, the effect of Jaguar disappears. The addition of Merquat does not noticeably affect any of the foam rheological properties studied. Optical observations of foam films, formed from all these systems, show a very good correlation between the polymer bridging of the foam film surfaces and the strong polymer effect on the foam rheological properties. The obtained results demonstrate that the bubble-bubble attraction can be used for efficient control of the foam yield stress and foam-wall yield stress, without significantly affecting the viscous friction in sheared foams.  相似文献

Supercritical carbon dioxide (ScCO2) was used as a physical foaming agent to prepare poly(vinylidene f luoride)/poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVDF/PVP) microstructure material. The effects of foaming conditions including saturation pressure, foaming temperature and foaming time on PVDF/PVP foams morphology, thermal and electrical behavior were systematically investigated by scanning electron microscope, differential scanning calorimeter and broadband dielectric spectrometer. Small cell and low cell density were achieved at low pressure of 12 MPa, as increasing saturation pressure, the average cell size increased first, and then decreased. The competition between the cell growth and cell nucleation played an important role in average cell size, which was directly related to ScCO2 processing conditions. With increasing foaming temperature, cell size was increased and cell density was decreased, in a nearly linear manner. The variation of foaming time was considered to be closely related to the time for cells to grow. Thus, the results revealed that the average cell size enhanced with extending foaming time. The thermal properties of PVDF/PVP composites are slightly inf luenced by foaming parameters, and the dielectric constant of PVDF/PVP composite foams decreased with increasing volume expansion ratio.  相似文献

Glass foams are building materials that now compete with classic insulating polymeric and fiber materials for thermal enveloping. The low flammability, high chemical durability and thermal stability are distinct advantages over polymeric materials. The present paper proposes the possibility of producing glass foam using two types of recycled glass wastes (window panes and bottle glass) together with plaster wastes from used ceramic casting molds as foaming agent. Optical microscopy, measurements of apparent porosity and density, hydrolytic and chemical stability, as well as thermal conductivity were used in order to characterize the obtained glass foams as insulator materials for the building industry. The apparent porosity of glass foams ranges between 20.19–54.54% when using window glass wastes, and 18.77–51.75% with bottle glass wastes. Thermal conductivity was less than 0.25 W mK-1 for all the studied glasses. The obtained results confirm that there exists an alternative method for producing glass foams, for example, from glass wastes and used ceramic plaster molds, which are utilized as foaming agents with good chemical stability and insulating properties.  相似文献

Nitrile butadiene rubber, NBR, structural foam of different apparent densities was obtained by using different concentrations of foaming agent, azodicarbonamide, ADC/K. The true stress-strain characteristics, in case of compression, of foamed samples after the application of cyclic stress-strain were measured. The effect of the cyclic stress-strain on strain energy density of ADC/K foaming agent-filled NBR rubber composites was studied. The mechanical parameters were found to depend on the foaming agent concentration and on the pre-cyclic fatigue number. Results also indicated that the strain energy decreased with filler concentration. The effects of the cyclic stress-strain on the conductivity of ADC/K foaming agent-filled NBR rubber composites were studied. The electrical properties were found to depend on the foaming agent concentration, the strain amplitude and the number of stress-strain cycles of pre-strain. This study was assisted by the current-voltage characteristics which were measured under the effect of different compression ratios: 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30%. The free current carrier mobility and the equilibrium concentration of charge carriers in the conduction band were produced as functions of compressive strain. Results also indicate that there is a linear variation between pressure and conductivity for all samples, which means that these samples can be used as a pressure sensor.  相似文献

Protein foam was explored as a foaming agent for enhanced oil recovery application in this study. The influence of salinity and oil presence on bulk stability and foamability of the egg white protein (EWP) foam was investigated. The results were compared with those of the classical surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) foam. The results showed that the EWP foam is more stable than the SDS foam in the presence of oil and different salts. Although, the SDS foam has more foamability than the EWP foam, however, at low to moderate salinities (1–3 wt% NaCl), both foam systems showed improvement in foamability. At a NaCl concentration of 4.0 wt% and above, foamability of the SDS foam started to decrease drastically while the foamability of the EWP foam remained the same. The presence of oil has a destabilizing effect on both foams but the EWP foam was less affected in comparison to the SDS foam. Moreover, increasing the aromatic hydrocarbon compound percentage in the added oil decreased the foamability and stability of the SDS foam more than EWP foams. This study suggests that the protein foam could be used as an alternative foaming agent for enhanced oil recovery application due to its high stability compared to the conventional foams.  相似文献

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy, and X‐ray diffraction methods were used to investigate the isothermal crystallization behavior and crystalline structure of poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL)/multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT) composites. PCL/MWNT composites were prepared via the mixing of a PCL polymer solution with carboxylic groups containing multiwalled carbon nanotubes (c‐MWNTs). Both Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectra indicated that carboxylic acid groups formed at both ends and on the sidewalls of the MWNTs. A transmission electron microscopy micrograph showed that c‐MWNTs were well separated and uniformly distributed in the PCL matrix. DSC isothermal results revealed that introducing c‐MWNTs into the PCL structure caused strongly heterogeneous nucleation induced by a change in the crystal growth process. The activation energy of PCL drastically decreased with the presence of 0.25 wt % c‐MWNT in PCL/c‐MWNT composites and then increased with increasing MWNT content. The result indicated that the addition of c‐MWNT to PCL induced heterogeneous nucleation (lower total activation energy) at a lower c‐MWNT content and then reduced the transportation ability of polymer chains during crystallization processes at a higher MWNT content (higher total activation energy). A correlation between the crystallization kinetics, melting behavior, and crystalline structure of PCL/c‐MWNT composites was also discussed. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: Biodegradable polymer/clay nanocomposites and/or composites based on poly(ε-polycaprolactone) (PCL) were prepared by conventional melt mixing. Three kinds of clays, organomodified Cloisite 15A and Cloisite 10A with different ammonium cations located in the silicate gallery and unmodified Cloisite with Na cations were used for composites preparation. The degree of dispersion of silicate layers in the matrix was determined by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Oscillatory rheological measurements were used for characterization of the physical network formed by the filler. The presence of intercalated and exfoliated structures were observed for the composites PCL/Cloisite 15A and PCL/Cloisite 10A, indicating that nanocomposite structure was formed. Changes of viscoelastic properties to more solid-like behavior, especially in the low frequency range were explained by formation of silicate network structure, which can be detected by modified Cole-Cole plots.  相似文献

Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) composites filled by multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) which was non-covalently modified by the combined surfactants of poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) and cetyltrimethyl-ammonium bromide (PSS-CTAB) were fabricated via simple solution precipitation method. PCL/MWCNTs composites provided with the low procolation threshold (0.4?wt%) and high electrical conductivity due to good dispersion of MWCNTs. And the excellent mechanical properties and enhanced thermal stability were also obtained with the addition of modified MWCNTs. In addition, all PCL composites showed significantly enhanced crystallization with increasing the MWCNTs contents, which demonstrated that the MWCNT-induced crystallization of PCL could effectively regulate the properties of composites. In a word, introducing non-covalent functionalized MWCNTs in the polymer system was a promising way for developing excellent conductive composites.  相似文献

Several new foaming agent formulations (surfactants and polymers) in the presence of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) were developed in 3% salinity (NaCl, 2.4?wt%, CaCl2, 0.6?wt%). The dispersion stability of the MWCNT and the viscosity of the solutions were examined as a prerequisite for reservoir applications. Foam was generated in situ and one-dimensional flow-through tests were performed by co-injecting air and foaming solution either in the presence of MWCNT or at particle-free condition. The pressure drop (Δp) across the sand-pack and the nanoparticles breakthrough were closely monitored. The fluid injection rate, gas fraction, and the effect of MWCNT on foams in porous media were investigated.

Our results reveal that foams stabilized by the selected nanoparticles are capable of generating stronger foams leading to higher apparent Δp. The Δp profile varies with gas fraction, which largely affects the foam texture and quality. Also, the viscosity of foaming agent solutions influences Δp values. Adding MWCNT to the foaming agent solutions appears beneficial to the flooding as surfactants adsorption onto nanoparticle surfaces, which facilitates surfactants partitioning to the G/L interface.

Addition of nanoparticles in the developed foam formulations leads to the formation of high-quality stronger foams in porous media, which could potentially improve the sweep efficiency and increase the oil recovery.  相似文献

Methylsilicone resin as a polymer precursor for a SiOC ceramic material was cured and foamed by electron beam (EB) irradiation in air prior to the pyrolysis under an inert atmosphere. Methylsilicone foams were obtained without additional foaming agent when exposed to accelerated electrons with radiation doses up to 9 MGy and dose rate of 2.8 kGy/s. During irradiation the polymer was melted and simultaneously gaseous products were formed by the methyl group oxidation and by the poly-condensation crosslinking reactions. The formed gases could not escape from the molten polymer and began to aggregate into bubbles. The effect of the radiation dose on the polymer foam molecular structure, the gel fraction and the ceramic yield was analyzed. The results indicate that the maximum amount of crosslinking in methylsilicone, when EB radiation is used, occurred between 1.0 and 2.0 MGy radiation dose. Methylsilicone foams were pyrolysed in N2 atmosphere at temperatures of 1200 and 1500 °C, resulting in amorphous SiOC and partially crystalline ceramic foams, respectively. A porosity of ~84% was achieved in the pyrolyzed foams, with cell size ranging from 30 to 300 μm and density of about 0.31 g cm?3.  相似文献

Nonaqueous foams stabilized by lamellar liquid crystal (L alpha) dispersion in diglycerol monolaurate (designated as C12G2)/olive oil systems are presented. Foamability and foam stability depending on composition and the effects of added water on the nonaqueous foaming behavior were systematically studied. It was found that the foamability increases with increasing C12G2 concentration from 1 to 3 wt% and then decreases with further increasing concentration, but the foam stability increases continuously with concentration. Depending on compositions, foams are stable for a few minutes to several hours. Foams produced by 10 wt% C12G2/olive oil system are stable for more than 6 h. In the study of effects of added water on the foaming properties of 5 wt% C12G2/olive oil system, it was found that the foamability and foam stability of 5 wt% C12G2/olive oil decreases upon addition of 1 wt% water, but with further increasing water, both the foamability and foam stability increase. Foams with 10% water added system are stable for approximately 4 h. Phase behavior study of the C12G2 in olive oil has shown the dispersion of L alpha particles in the dilute regions at 25 degrees C. Thus, stable foams in the C12G2/olive oil system can be attributed to L alpha particle, which adsorb at the gas-liquid interface as confirmed by surface tension measurements and optical microscopy. Laser diffraction particle size analyzer has shown that the average particle diameter decreases with increasing the C12G2 concentration and, hence, the foams are more stable at higher surfactant concentration. Judging from foaming test, optical micrographs, and particle size, it can be concluded that stable nonaqueous foams in the studied systems are mainly caused by the dispersion of L alpha particles and depending on the particle size the foam stability largely differs.  相似文献

The foam performances of 3‐dodecoxy‐2‐hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride (C12TAC) have been determined in the existence of different relative amount of polymer. The experimental results show that the foaming ability of the mixture systems of the C12TAC/PEG and C12TAC/PVP is stronger than that of the surfactant solutions in the absence of polymer, and with the increase of relative amount of polymer both foaming efficiency and foam stability of the surfactant solutions are evidently enhanced. For the aqueous solution of the surfactant, effect of temperature on foaming properties has also been examined. The results show that both the foaming ability and stability of the foams of the surfactant solutions are highest (or strongest) at 30°C.  相似文献

Antimicrobial active films based on poly(lactic acid) (PLA) were prepared with poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) and thymol (0, 3, 6, 9, and 12 wt%) by solvent casting methods. The films were characterized by thermal, structural, mechanical, gas barrier, and antimicrobial properties. Scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed that the surface of film became rougher with certain porosity when thymol was incorporated into the PLA/PCL blends. Thymol acted as plasticizers, which reduce the intermolecular forces of polymer chains, thus improving the flexibility and extensibility of the films. The addition of PCL into the pure PLA film decreased the glass transition temperature of the films. The presence of thymol decreased the crystallinity of PLA phase, but did not affect the thermal stability of films. Water vapor barrier properties of films slightly decreased with the increase of thymol loading. The antimicrobial properties of thymol containing films showed a significant activity against Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes. The results indicated the potential of PLA/PCL/thymol composites for applications in antimicrobial packaging.
