Measurements of the spatial and time variation of two components of the velocity have been made over a sinusoidal solid wavy boundary with a height to length ratio of 2a/λ = 0.10 and with a dimensionless wave number of α+ = (2π/λ)(v/u ?) = 0.02. For these conditions, both intermittent and time-mean flow reversals are observed near the troughs of the waves. Statistical quantities that are determined are the mean streamwise and normal velocities, the root-meansquare of the fluctuations of the streamwise and normal velocities, and the Reynolds shear stresses. Turbulence production is calculated from these measurements. The flow is characterized by an outer flow and by an inner flow extending to a distance of about α?1 from the mean level of the surface. Turbulence production in the inner region is fundamentally different from flow over a flat surface in that it is mainly associated with a shear layer that separates from the back of the wave. Flow close to the surface is best described by an interaction between the shear layer and the wall, which produces a retarded zone and a boundary-layer with large wall shear stresses. Measurements of the outer flow compare favorably with measurements over a flat wall if velocities are made dimensionless by a friction velocity defined with a shear stress obtained by extrapolating measurements of the Reynolds stress to the mean levels of the surface (rather than from the drag on the wall).  相似文献

An experimental study has been carried out of the low speed Coanda wall jet with both streamwise and axisymmetric curvature. A single component laser Doppler technique was used, and by taking several orientations at a given point, values of the three mean velocities and five of the six Reynolds stresses were obtained. The lateral divergence and convex streamwise curvature both enhanced the turbulence in the outer part of the jet compared with a plane two-dimensional wall jet. The inner layer exhibited a large separation of the positions of maximum velocity and zero shear stress. It was found that the streamwise mean velocity profile became established very rapidly downstream of the slot exit. The profile appeared fairly similar at later downstream positions, but the mean radial velocity and turbulence parameters showed the expected nonself preservation of the flow. Removal of the streamwise curvature resulted in a general return of the jet conditions toward those expected of a plane wall jet. The range and accuracy of the data may be used for developing turbulence models and computational techniques for this type of flow.  相似文献

Extensive single point turbulence measurements made in the boundary layer on a mildly curved heated convex wall show that the turbulence heat fluxes and Stanton number are more sensitive to a change in wall curvature than the Reynolds stresses and skinfriction coefficient, and that downstream, as the flow adjusts to new curved conditions, the St/c f ratio of Reynolds analogy is appreciably lower than in plane wall flow for the same conditions. Details of the turbulence structure in unheated flow have been documented in an earlier paper; temperature field measurements now described comprise mean temperature distributions, the streamwise variation of wall heat flux, profiles of the temperature variance, transverse and streamwise heat fluxes, and triple correlations. Turbulent diffusion of heat flux is drastically reduced even by mild curvature; changes in the heat fluxes are of the same order as changes in the shear stress, that is, an order of magnitude greater than the ratio of boundary layer thickness to wall radius of curvature. The data include plane flow measurements taken in a developed boundary layer upstream of a change in wall curvature.  相似文献

Mean flow and turbulence measurements have been made in a boundary layer which grows first on a flat' wall and then on a convex wall of radius of curvature approximately 100 times the boundary layer thickness. The turbulence data include profiles of the four non-zero components of the Reynolds stress tensor and three triple velocity products obtained at five stream-wise positions. A number of measurements were also made for comparison in the boundary layer on a flat wall under the same conditions. The effects of convex curvature are to reduce turbulent intensities, shear stress and wall friction by approximately 10% of their plane flow values; the triple velocity products are halved in the curved layer. The measurements supplement the small quantity of previously published data available for testing mathematical models of turbulence. The results show the same general trends that have been observed in earlier investigations but there are significant differences in detail, notably in respect of levels of the normal stresses.  相似文献

An experimental study of a two-dimensional plane turbulent wall jet   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Laser-Doppler measurements were conducted in a plane turbulent wall jet at a Reynolds number based on inlet velocity, Re 0, of 9600. The initial development as well as the fully developed flow was studied. Special attention was given to the near-wall region, including the use of small measuring volumes and the application of specific near-wall data corrections, so that wall shear stresses were determined directly from the mean velocity gradient at the wall using only data below y +=4. It was possible to resolve the inner peak in the streamwise turbulence intensity as well as the inner (negative) peak in the shear stress. Limiting values of (u′)+ and uv + were determined. Turbulence data from the outer region of the flow were compared to earlier hot wire measurements and large differences in the normal turbulence intensity and the shear stress were found. These differences can be attributed to high turbulence intensity effects on the hot-wires. Received: 17 October 1996 / Accepted: 8 December 1997  相似文献

Axisymmetrically stable turbulent Taylor vortices between two concentric cylinders are studied with respect to the transition from vortex to wall driven turbulent production. The outer cylinder is stationary and the inner cylinder rotates. A low Reynolds number turbulence model using the kω formulation, facilitates an analysis of the velocity gradients in the Taylor–Couette flow. For a fixed inner radius, three radius ratios 0.734, 0.941 and 0.985 are employed to identify the Reynolds number range at which this transition occurs. At relatively low Reynolds numbers, turbulent production is shown to be dominated by the outflowing boundary of the Taylor vortex. As the Reynolds number increases, shear driven turbulence (due to the rotating cylinder) becomes the dominating factor. For relatively small gaps turbulent flow is shown to occur at Taylor numbers lower than previously reported. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Experimental measurements address the effects on a turbulent boundary layer of wall roughness on a flat plate and a ramp that produces a separation bubble over the ramp trailing edge. A fully rough flow condition is achieved on the upstream flat plate. The main effect of the wall roughness on the outer layer turbulence on a flat plate is to change the friction velocity. The separation region is substantially larger for the rough-wall case. The rough-wall boundary layer turbulence is less sensitive to the onset of an adverse pressure gradient over the ramp, producing substantially smaller Reynolds stress peaks in upstream flat-plate, wall-unit coordinates.  相似文献

The mean velocity field of a 30° inclined wall jet has been investigated using both hot-wire and laser Doppler anemometry (LDA). Provided that the nozzle aspect ratio is greater than 30 and the inclined wall angle (β) is less than 50°, LDA measurements for various β show that the reattachment length is independent of the nozzle aspect ratio and the nozzle exit Reynolds number (in the range 6670–13,340). There is general agreement between the reattachment lengths determined by LDA and those determined using wall surface oil film visualisation technique. The role of coherent structures arising from initial instabilities of a 30° wall jet has been explored by hot-wire spectra measurements. Results indicate that the fundamental vortex roll-up frequency in both the inner and outer shear layer corresponds to a Strouhal number (based on nozzle exit momentum thickness and velocity) of 0.012. The spatial development of instabilities in the jet has been studied by introducing acoustic excitation at a frequency corresponding to the shear layer mode. The formation of the fundamental and its first subharmonic has been identified in the outer shear layer. However, the development of the first subharmonic in the inner shear layer has been severely suppressed. Distributions of mean velocities, turbulence intensities and Reynolds shear stress indicate that controlled acoustic excitation enhances the development of instabilities and promotes jet reattachment to the wall, resulting in a substantially reduced recirculation flow region. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements and planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) visualizations have been made in a turbulent boundary layer over a rough wall. The wall roughness consisted of square bars placed transversely to the flow at a pitch to height ratio of λ/k = 11 for the PLIF experiments and λ/k = 8 and 16 for the PIV measurements. The ratio between the boundary layer thickness and the roughness height k/δ was about 20 for the PLIF and 38 for the PIV. Both the PLIF and PIV data showed that the near-wall region of the flow was populated by unstable quasi-coherent structures which could be associated to shear layers originating at the trailing edge of the roughness elements. The streamwise mean velocity profile presented a downward shift which varied marginally between the two cases of λ/k, in agreement with previous measurements and DNS results. The data indicated that the Reynolds stresses normalized by the wall units are higher for the case λ/k = 16 than those for λ/k = 8 in the outer region of the flow, suggesting that the roughness density effects could be felt well beyond the near-wall region of the flow. As expected the roughness disturbed dramatically the sublayer which in turn altered the turbulence production mechanism. The turbulence production is maximum at a distance of about 0.5k above the roughness elements. When normalized by the wall units, the turbulence production is found to be smaller than that of a smooth wall. It is argued that the production of turbulence is correlated with the form drag.  相似文献

In the present study, an axisymmetric turbulent boundary layer growing on a cylinder is investigated experimentally using hot wire anemometry. The combined effects of transverse curvature as well as low Reynolds number on the mean and turbulent flow quantities are studied. The measurements include the mean velocity, turbulence intensity, skewness and flatness factors in addition to wall shear stress. The results are presented separately for the near wall region and the outer region using dimensionless parameters suitable for each case. They are also compared with the results available in the open literature. The present investigation revealed that the mean velocity in near wall region is similar to other simple turbulent flows (flat plate boundary layer, pipe and channel flows); but it differs in the logarithmic and outer regions. Further, for dimensionless moments of higher orders, such as skewness and flatness factors, the main effects of the low Reynolds number and the transverse curvature are present in the near wall region as well as the outer region.  相似文献

Measurements of turbulence with laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) are compared for turbulent flows over a flat surface and a surface with sinusoidal waves of small wavelength. The wavy boundary was highly rough in that the flow separated. The Reynolds number based on the half-height of the channel and the bulk velocity was 46,000. The wavelength was 5 mm and the height to wavelength ratio was 0.1. The root-mean-squares of the velocity fluctuations are approximately equal if normalized with the friction velocity. This can be explained as a consequence of the approximate equality of the correlation coefficients of the Reynolds shear stress. Calculations with a direct numerical simulation (DNS) are used to show that the fluid interacts with the wall in quite different ways for flat and wavy surfaces. They show similarity in that large quadrant 2 events in the outer flow, for both cases, are associated with plumes that emerge from the wall region and extend over large distances. Measurements of skewness of the streamwise and wall-normal velocity fluctuations and quadrant analyses of the Reynolds shear stresses are qualitatively similar for flat and wavy surfaces. However, the skewness magnitudes and the ratio of the quadrant 2 to quadrant 4 contributions are larger for the wavy surface. Thus, there is evidence that turbulent structures are universal in the outer flow and for quantitative differences in the statistics that reflect differences in the way in which the fluid interacts with the wall.  相似文献

The flow in the boundary layer in the vicinity of the stagnation point of a flat plate is examined. The outer stream consists of turbulent flow of the jet type, directed normally to the plate. Assumptions concerning the connection between the pulsations in velocity and temperature in the boundary layer and the average parameters chosen on the basis of experimental data made it possible to obtain an isomorphic solution of the boundary layer equations. Equations are obtained for the friction and heat transfer at the wall in the region of gradient flow taking into account the effect of the turbulence of the impinging stream. It is shown that the friction at the wall is insensitive to the turbulence of the impinging stream, while the heat transfer is significantly increased with an increase in the pulsations of the outer flow. These properties are confirmed by the results of experimental studies [1–4].Translated from Zhurnal Prikladnoi Mekhaniki i Tekhnicheskoi Fiziki, No. 5, pp. 83–87, September–October, 1973.  相似文献

The application of an impinging sweeping jet, which oscillates periodically with a large angle, to convective heat transfer has received attention owing to its capability to provide a more spatially uniform and enhanced heat removal rate when compared to a steady jet. Herein, we study how the surface curvature affects the heat transfer performance of a sweeping jet and couple it with the representative flow characteristics. Heat transfer measurement and quantitative flow visualization are conducted experimentally for concave and convex surfaces as well as a flat surface. Whereas concave surfaces have a better heat transfer rate than a flat surface, the enhancement of the heat transfer is relatively small for a convex surface. For both concave and convex surfaces, the Nusselt number does not increase monotonically with the curvature magnitude but has a peak for a moderate curvature. The variation in heat transfer performance with the surface curvature is correlated with the phase-averaged velocity profile of the wall jet deflected after an impingement and the turbulence kinetic energy inside the jet. For both concave and convex surfaces, the wall jet becomes thinner than a flat surface in general, which contributes to improved heat transfer. However, whereas the turbulence kinetic energy is significantly larger for a concave surface of a moderate curvature than that of a flat surface, the turbulence kinetic energy for a convex surface is reduced from that of a flat surface, resulting in degradation of the heat transfer performance.  相似文献

In this paper we consider a fully developed turbulent flow in a round pipe with a small inner annulus. The diameter of the inner annulus is less than 10% of the diameter of the outer pipe. As a consequence, the surface area of the inner pipe compared to the outer pipe is small. The friction exerted by the wall on the flow is proportional to the surface area and the wall shear stress. Due to the small surface area of the inner annulus the additional stress on the flow due to the presence of the annulus may expected to be negligible. However, it will be shown that the inner annulus drastically changes the flow patterns and gives rise to unexpected scaling properties. In previous studies (Chung et al., Int J Heat Fluid Flow 23:426–440, 2002; Churchill and Chan, AIChE J 41:2513–2521, 1995) it was argued that radial position of the point of zero shear stress does not coincide with the radial location of the point of maximum axial velocity. In our direct numerical simulations we observe a coincidence of these points within the numerical accuracy of our model. It is shown that the velocity profile close to the inner annulus is logarithmic.  相似文献

The mean velocity field and skin friction characteristics of a plane turbulent wall jet on a smooth and a fully rough surface were studied using Particle Image Velocimetry. The Reynolds number based on the slot height and the exit velocity of the jet was Re = 13,400 and the nominal size of the roughness was k = 0.44 mm. For this Reynolds number and size of roughness element, the flow was in the fully rough regime. The surface roughness results in a distinct change in the shape of the mean velocity profile when scaled in outer coordinates, i.e. using the maximum velocity and outer half-width as the relevant velocity and length scales, respectively. Using inner coordinates, the mean velocity in the lower region of the inner layer was consistent with a logarithmic profile which characterizes the overlap region of a turbulent boundary layer; for the rough wall case, the velocity profile was shifted downward due to the enhanced wall shear stress. For the fully rough flow, the decay rate of the maximum velocity of the wall jet is increased, and the skin friction coefficient is much larger than for the smooth wall case. The inner layer is also thicker for the rough wall case. The effects of surface roughness were observed to penetrate into the outer layer and slightly enhance the spread rate for the outer half-width, which was not observed in most other studies of transitionally rough wall jet flows.  相似文献

With reference particularly to the work of Peter Bradshaw and his associates, some remarks are made about the recovery of previously distorted shear flows. It is emphasized that such recovery is usually extremely slow, and this is further illustrated by new measurements of the velocity field and turbulence structure in the relaxing flow downstream of a separated region. Data have been obtained for downstream distances (x) up to about 20 times the length of the separated region (xr), or about 75 times the flow thickness at reattachment. This is a significantly more extensive region than has been previously studied, and the data are more comprehensive than any previously available.

It is shown that the recovery is even slower than previously surmized. Furthermore, the measurements demonstrate that the turbulence stresses eventually fall below standard boundary-layer values (at the same Reynolds number), although around reattachment they are very much higher, having values more akin to those in plane mixing layers. This undershoot is apparently a new finding and is argued to be a result of the influence of the outer part of the flow on the growing inner region. The usual log-law only begins to appear beyond x/xr = 2.5. It effectively “sees” a turbulent outer region that recovers even more slowly than itself, and the response of the inner region therefore has similarities to the response of an ordinary boundary layer to free-stream turbulence.

It is concluded that even current second-order (i.e., Reynolds stress) models may not capture the exquisitely slow decay of the strong, large eddy motions in the outer part of the flow and the subtleties of their influence on the inner region.  相似文献

Pulsed Hot-Wire Anemometry (PHWA) measurements are performed in well defined two- and three-dimensional turbulent wall jets. For the two-dimensional wall jet the objective is to study reported differences between conventional Hot-Wire Anemometry (HWA) and Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) results. In the three dimensional wall jet, new improved data are provided, employing a measuring technique suitable for highly turbulent flows. This, since only hot-wire results previously have been published for this flow. The pulsed wire results show good agreement with existing Laser Doppler anemometer data in the two-dimensional wall jet, both reporting significantly higher turbulence levels in the outer region of the flow than hot-wires do. The hot-wire anemometer errors generally increase with increasing local turbulence intensity and since the three-dimensional wall jet has a higher turbulence level than its two-dimensional equivalent, the new pulsed hot-wire results improve the information available for the turbulence field in this flow significantly. Experimental and numerical investigations of turbulent flow and heat transfer have been performed in a concentric annulus between independently rotating tubes. Numerical predictions, applying a Reynolds stress turbulence model, are compared with experimental fluid flow and heat transfer results for the case of a heated outer tube and an adiabatic inner tube. Compared to the above mentioned boundary conditions for the conservation equation of energy, differences in heat transfer in case of a heated inner tube and an adiabatic outer one, are examined by analysis, applying a mixing length turbulence model. Numerical investigations with both kinds of models about the influence of annulus radius ratio make evident that due to different superimpositions of centrifugal force and additional shear stress there is a wide variation of effects on fluid flow and heat transfer caused by the rotation of the inner and the outer tube.  相似文献
