The effects of atomic oxygen (AO) and vacuum UV radiation simulating low Earth orbit conditions on two commercially available piezoelectric polymer films, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and poly(vinylidene fluoride‐trifluoroethylene) P(VDF‐TrFE), have been studied. Surface erosion and pattern development are significant for both polymers. Erosion yields were determined as 2.8 × 10?24 cm3/atom for PVDF and 2.5 × 10?24 cm3/atom for P(VDF‐TrFE). The piezoelectric properties of the residual material of both polymers were largely unchanged after exposure, although a slight shift in the Curie transition of the P(VDF‐TrFE) was observed. A lightly cross‐linked network was formed in the copolymer presumably because of penetrating vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation, while the homopolymer remained uncross‐linked. These differences were attributed to varying degrees of crystallinity and potentially greater absorption, and hence damage, of VUV radiation in P(VDF‐TrFE) compared with PVDF. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Smart materials, such as thin‐film piezoelectric polymers, are interesting for potential applications on Gossamer spacecraft. This investigation aims to predict the performance and long‐term stability of the piezoelectric properties of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and its copolymers under conditions simulating the low‐Earth‐orbit environment. To examine the effects of temperature on the piezoelectric properties of PVDF, poly(vinylidenefluoride‐co‐trifluoroethylene), and poly(vinylidenefluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene), the d33 piezoelectric coefficients were measured up to 160 °C, and the electric displacement/electric field (D–E) hysteresis loops were measured from ?80 to +110 °C. The room‐temperature d33 coefficient of PVDF homopolymer films, annealed at 50, 80, and 125 °C, dropped rapidly within a few days of thermal exposure and then remained unchanged. In contrast, the TrFE copolymer exhibited greater thermal stability than the homopolymer, with d33 remaining almost unchanged up to 125 °C. The HFP copolymer exhibited poor retention of d33 at temperatures above 80 °C. In situ D–E loop measurements from ?80 to +110 °C showed that the remanent polarization of the TrFE copolymer was more stable than that of the PVDF homopolymer. D–E hysteresis loop and d33 results were also compared with the deflection of the PVDF homopolymer and TrFE copolymer bimorphs tested over a wide temperature range. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymer nanoporous materials with periodic cylindrical holes were fabricated from microphase‐separated structure of diblock copolymers consisting of a radiation‐crosslinking polymer and a radiation‐degrading polymer through simultaneous crosslinking and degradation by γ‐irradiation. A polybutadiene‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (PB‐b‐PMMA) diblock copolymer film that self‐assembles into hexagonally packed poly(methyl methacrylate) cylinders in polybutadiene matrix was irradiated with γ‐rays. Solubility test, IR spectroscopy, and TEM and SEM observations for this copolymer film in comparison with a polystyrene‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) diblock copolymer film revealed that poly(methyl methacrylate) domains were removed by γ‐irradiation and succeeding solvent washing to form cylindrical holes within polybutadiene matrix, which was rigidified by radiation crosslinking. Thus, it was demonstrated that nanoporous materials can be prepared by γ‐irradiation, maintaining the original structure of PB‐b‐PMMA diblock copolymer film. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We studied the photolysis of a fluoroethylene–fluoropropylene copolymer (FEP) film by vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation from a resonance Xe lamp at a wavelength of 147 nm and air pressures of 0.05 and 2.5 Torr. The chemical changes in the FEP surface layer were investigated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection attachment and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Double bonds were found to be the main product in the case of VUV treatment at 0.05 Torr, while photo-oxidation of FEP occurred predominantly by VUV treatment at 2.5 Torr under formation of the —CF2C(O)F group. This oxygen-containing group was more effectively formed in the FEP surface layer by VUV photo-oxidation than by conventional surface oxidation techniques such as treatments by plasma and corona discharge and ozone. Storage of the VUV-treated polymers in air at 50% relative humidity resulted in hydrolysis of —CF2C(O)F to the —CF2COOH group. Substantial improvement of the film wettability was noticed after VUV photo-oxidation. These findings suggest that VUV irradiation provides a high potential for surface modification of fluorinated polymers which are known to be particularly resistant against functionalization by conventional surface modification techniques such as plasma treatment. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The water transport in 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate copolymer (HEMA copolymer) irradiated by γ rays in air is investigated. The sorption data of deionized water transport in HEMA copolymer subjected to various dosages of γ‐ray irradiation are in excellent agreement with the theoretical model that accounts for case I, case II, and anomalous transport. The diffusion coefficient for case I and the velocity for case II satisfy the Arrhenius equation for all dosage levels. The transport process is exothermic and the equilibrium–swelling ratio satisfies the van't Hoff plot. The studies of the glass transition temperature of the irradiated HEMA copolymer, the pH value of deionized water after irradiation treatment, and the quantitative determination of water structures in the HEMA copolymer hydrogel are helpful in analyzing the irradiation effect on water transport in the HEMA copolymer. The effect of irradiation on the optical properties of the HEMA copolymer is also analyzed. The transmittance of a standard specimen with saturated water is lower than that before the water treatment because of the creation of holes. However, because of the formation of color centers, the color of the copolymer becomes yellow to brown and the UV cutoff wavelength of the HEMA copolymer shifts to the longer wavelength side with increasing irradiation dosage. Some of the color centers can be annihilated after water treatment. The buckled pattern on the outer surface is observed when the HEMA copolymer irradiated by a γ ray in air is immersed in the water. This phenomenon is explained by the inhomogeneous distribution of crosslinking density. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 38: 659–671, 2000  相似文献

(2‐Bromo‐n‐nonan‐1‐oxycarbonyl)ethyl acrylate was synthesized as an inimer for self‐condensing vinyl polymerization (SCVP) to produce hyperbranched poly(n‐nonyl acrylate), either as a homopolymer or as a copolymer with n‐nonyl acrylate. The inimer was homopolymerized and copolymerized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and activator generated by electron transfer ATRP to produce soluble polymers with broad polydispersities (up to ? = 9.91), which is characteristic of hyperbranched polymers produced by SCVP. The resulting hyperbranched (co)polymers were crosslinked by atom transfer radical coupling in both one‐pot and two‐step procedures. The radical–radical crosslinking reaction is extremely efficient, resulting in hard plastic particles from the homopolymer of (2‐bromo‐n‐nonan‐1‐oxycarbonyl)ethyl acrylate synthesized in bulk. Crosslinked organogels that swell in tetrahydrofuran were formed when the rate of crosslinking decreased using acetonitrile solutions. Dynamic shear and stress relaxation experiments demonstrated that the dry network behaves as a covalently crosslinked soft gel, with a glass transition at ?50 °C according to differential scanning calorimetry. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymers that can be cleaved at predetermined sites by ionizing radiations have been synthesized by incorporating benzylic esters into their skeletons. Secondary electrons generated by ionizing radiations are captured by the benzylic esters to dissociate into benzylic radicals and carboxyl anions, so that the polymer skeletons are cleaved at predetermined sites. The γ‐irradiation of a three‐armed star polymer, 1,2,4‐tri‐(2‐polystyrene‐2‐methyl‐propyonyloxymethyl)‐benzene, results in the selective scission of the arms, and the resultant radicals neither combine with each other nor graft to the other polymer skeletons to give larger polymer molecules. The irradiation of poly(methyl methacrylate) crosslinked with 4‐methacryloyloxybenzyl methacrylate results in the selective scission at the crosslinking sites with high radiation‐chemical efficiency of 8.5 scissions per 100 eV radiation energy absorbed. These results indicate that the incorporation of benzylic esters into polymer skeletons opens a new way of constructing radiation resists with high sensitivity to ionizing radiations and high resistivity to plasma etching. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of electron irradiation on the molecular chemical structure, conformation, mobility, and phase transition of vinylidene fluoride (VDF) and trifluoroethylene (TrFE) copolymer have been investigated with variable‐temperature, solid‐state 19F nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). It has been found that electron irradiation converts all‐trans conformations of both VDF‐rich and TrFE‐containing segments into dynamically mixed trans–gauche conformations accompanied by a simultaneous ferroelectric‐to‐paraelectric (or amorphous) transition. The variable‐temperature 19F magic‐angle‐spinning spectra results show that the paraelectric phase melts at much lower temperatures in irradiated films than in an unirradiated sample. Moreover, 19F NMR relaxation data (spin–lattice relaxation times in both the laboratory and rotating frames) reveal that electron irradiation enhances the molecular motion in paraelectric regions, whereas the molecular motion in a high‐temperature amorphous melt (>100 °C) is more constrained in irradiated films. Besides these physical changes, electron irradiation also induces the formation of several CF3 groups. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 44: 1714–1724, 2006  相似文献

The effects of radicals on silica surface, which were formed by γ‐ray irradiation, on the polymerization of vinyl monomers were investigated. It was found that the polymerization of styrene was remarkably retarded in the presence of γ‐ray‐irradiated silica above 60 °C, at which thermal polymerization of styrene is readily initiated. During the polymerization, a part of polystyrene formed was grafted onto the silica surface but percentage of grafting was very small. On the other hand, no retardation of the polymerization of styrene was observed in the presence of γ‐ray‐irradiated silica below 50 °C; the polymerization tends to accelerate and polystyrene was grafted onto the silica surface. Poly(vinyl acetate) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (MMA) were also grafted onto the surface during the polymerization in the presence of γ‐ray‐irradiated silica. The grafting of polymers onto the silica surface was confirmed by thermal decomposition GC‐MS. It was considered that at lower temperature, the grafting based on the propagation of polystyrene from surface radical (“grafting from” mechanism) preferentially proceeded. On the contrary, at higher temperature, the coupling reaction of propagating polymer radicals with surface radicals (“grafting onto” mechanism) proceeded to give relatively higher molecular weight polymer‐grafted silica. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We investigated the structures induced by an irradiation of a near‐infrared (NIR) femtosecond laser pulse in dye‐doped polymeric materials {poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), thermoplastic epoxy resin (Epoxy), and a block copolymer of methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate‐butyl acrylate [p(MMA/EA‐BA) block copolymer]}. Dyes used were classified into two types—type 1 with absorption at 400 nm and type 2 with no absorption at 400 nm. The 400‐nm wavelength corresponds to the two‐photon absorption region by the irradiated NIR laser pulse at 800 nm. Type 1 dye‐doped PMMA and p(MMA/EA‐BA) block copolymer showed a peculiar dye additive effect for the structures induced by the line irradiation of a NIR femtosecond laser pulse. On the contrary, dye‐doped Epoxy did not exhibit a dye additive effect. The different results among PMMA, p(MMA/EA‐BA) block copolymer, and Epoxy matrix polymers are supposed to be related to the difference of electron‐acceptor properties. The mechanism of this type 1 dye‐additive‐effect phenomenon for PMMA and p(MMA/EA‐BA) block copolymer is discussed on the basis of two‐photon absorption of type 1 dye at 400 nm by the irradiation of a femtosecond laser pulse with 800 nm wavelength and the dissipation of the absorbed energy to the polymer matrix among various transition processes. Dyes with a low‐fluorescence quantum yield favored the formation of thicker grating structures. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 40: 2800–2806, 2002  相似文献

Carbon dioxide was incorporated into poly(glycidyl methacrylate‐co‐methyl methacrylate) by a solid‐phase reaction, which transformed the pendent oxirane moieties into cyclic carbonate moieties, with quaternary ammonium halide catalysts. The incorporation of carbon dioxide into the copolymer led to soluble carbonate‐containing polymers, whereas the incorporation of carbon dioxide into the glycidyl methacrylate homopolymer produced an insoluble product. The copolymer composition, reaction temperature, and catalyst amount affected the incorporation efficiency and the side reaction that caused crosslinking. Effective incorporation was achieved under the following reaction conditions: the glycidyl methacrylate content was less than approximately 50%, the temperature was greater than the glass‐transition temperature, and the catalyst concentration was 1.5–6 mol %. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, we reported the studies on the local dual‐peak vibrations in ferroelectric P(VDF‐TrFE) films, induced by an alternating voltage with its amplitude high enough to cause polarization reversal. A further study showed that this dual‐peak vibration was caused by ferroelectric switching process. The buildup of these dual‐peak vibrations had been detected, and the asymmetrical evolution of local butterfly loops was observed. It was believed that the observed time delay during the developments of dual‐peak vibrations and butterfly loops should be attributed to the electrode effect. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. RAFT mediated grafting of poly(t‐butyl acrylate) onto the surface of a commercial poly(ethylene‐co‐propylene), Elpro, has been carried out using initiation by 60Co γ‐radiation at 298 and 273 K. The polymerizations were in bulk monomer and using the RAFT agent 1‐phenylethyl phenyldithioacetate. The rates of homopolymerization and grafting were found to decrease with increasing RAFT agent concentration, indicating that both polymerization processes involve participation of the RAFT agent. There was good agreement between the predicted and experimental molecular weights of the homopolymer that had a narrow polydispersity. The poly(t‐butyl acrylate) grafts were hydrolyzed by trifluoroacetic acid to form poly(acrylic acid) grafts, which could either be further functionalized or used to control the surface polarity of the Elpro. ATR‐FTIR spectroscopy was used to characterize the grafts and Raman spectroscopy was used to assess the depth of the grafts. The water contact angle for the Elpro surface grafted with poly(acrylic acid) was found to be linearly dependent on the amount of the graft present. The living nature of the grafted chains was demonstrated by the addition of a second block of polystyrene. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 1074–1083, 2007  相似文献

The direct preparation of grafting polymer brushes from commercial poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) films with surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is demonstrated. The direct initiation of the secondary fluorinated site of PVDF facilitated grafting of the hydrophilic monomers from the PVDF surface. Homopolymer brushes of 2‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and poly (ethylene glycol) monomethacrylate (PEGMA) were prepared by ATRP from the PVDF surface. The chemical composition and surface topography of the graft‐functionalized PVDF surfaces were characterized by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, attenuated total reflectance/Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. A kinetic study revealed a linear increase in the graft concentration of poly[2‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (PDMAEMA) and poly[poly(ethylene glycol) monomethacrylate] (PPEGMA) with the reaction time, indicating that the chain growth from the surface was consistent with a controlled or living process. The living chain ends were used as macroinitiators for the synthesis of diblock copolymer brushes. The water contact angles on PVDF films were reduced by the surface grafting of DMAEMA and PEGMA. Protein adsorption experiments revealed a substantial antifouling property of PPEGMA‐grafted PVDF films and PDMAEMA‐grafted PVDF films in comparison with the pristine PVDF surface. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thermal processing at various temperatures has been used to fabricate poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF‐co‐TrFE)] films with varied crystalline properties in an attempt to improve their piezoelectric properties. Although the dielectric constant of the films annealed at higher temperature is smaller than that of cooled and quenched ones, it has been shown that the annealed films possess larger crystallinity and stacked lamellar crystal grain size. The ferroelectric domains deriving from crystal region in all the samples are effectively improved by hot polarization. As a result, the remnant polarizations (Pr) and coercive electric field (Ec) of the corresponding films are improved at a low frequency due to the response of dipoles in crystal phase, and the largest piezoelectric constant in the longitudinal thickness mode (d33=?25 pC/N) is obtained in an annealed copolymer film. The results illustrate improving the crystal structure of P(VDF‐co‐TrFE) is an effective way to realize high electromechanical properties, which provides broadly applied scenery for this kind of copolymer in piezoelectric components. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The surface of carbon black (CB) nanoparticles was functionalized with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) either by trapping of macroradicals or by cycloaddition. PVDF with two iodine end groups (I‐PVDF‐I) obtained from iodine transfer polymerization in supercritical CO2 was heated in the presence of CB and the C? I bond was cleaved resulting in a reaction between the macroradical and the CB surface. To allow for cycloaddition of PVDF to the CB surface for a number of polymers, the iodine end groups were replaced by azide end groups. In addition, microwave irradiation was applied to the functionalization. The influence of temperature, time, polymer concentration, and polymer molar mass on the functionalization reaction was examined. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The blend system containing a poly(vinylidene fluoride/trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF/TrFE)] copolymer (68/32 mol %) and poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) was miscible from the results of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies that exhibit the presence of a single, composition‐dependent glass transition temperature (Tg) and a strong melting point depression for the semicrystalline P(VDF/TrFE) component. However, differences between the DSC and dielectric measurements, which showed a separate P(VDF/TrFE) Tg peak, suggests that the P(VDF/TrFE)/PVAc blends are actually partially miscible. Because of the lower dielectric constant of PVAc and the reduced sample crystallinity caused by the addition of PVAc, both the dielectric constant and the remanent polarization of the copolymer blends decrease with increasing PVAc content. The presence of a small amount of PVAc stabilized the anomalous ferroelectric behavior of ice–water‐quenched P(VDF/TrFE), and the blend portrayed normal polarization reversal behavior after adding only 1 wt % PVAc. The piezoelectric response suggests small changes with an increasing number of poling cycles. It is believed that PVAc affects the DE hysteresis behavior at the interface between crystalline and amorphous phases, although much work remains to be done to confirm this hypothesis. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of a novel spiro orthoester containing monomer, 1,4,6‐trioxaspiro[4.4]‐2‐nonylmethyl acrylate, is presented. This monomer was polymerized via a free‐radical system to yield the homopolymer and a series of copolymers with phosphorus‐containing comonomers. Diethyl vinyl phosphonate, allyldiphenylphosphine oxide, and diethyl(methacryoyoxymethyl)phosphonate were used in various feed ratios to produce copolymers with different phosphorous concentrations containing crosslinkable spiro orthoester side‐chain units. The crosslinking of the polymers was performed cationically with ytterbium triflate, and in all cases, the expansion of the polymer was observed. Moreover, the incorporation of phosphorus into the copolymers increased the limiting oxygen indices, regardless of the percentage of phosphorus used. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization technique was applied to graft polymerize brushes of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(poly(ethylene glycol) monomethacrylate) (PPEGMA) from poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) surfaces. PVDF surfaces were exposed to aqueous LiOH, followed by successive reductions with NaBH4 and DIBAL‐H to obtain hydroxyl functionality. Azo‐functionalities, as surface initiators for grafting, were immobilized on the PVDF surfaces by esterification of 4,4′‐azobis(4‐cyanopentanoic acid) and the surface hydroxyl groups. The chemical composition and surface topography of the graft‐functionalized PVDF surfaces were characterized by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, attenuated total reflectance‐FTIR spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Kinetics studies revealed a linear increase in the graft concentration of PMMA and PPEGMA with the reaction time, indicating that the chain growth from the surface was consistent with a “controlled” or “living” process. We synthesized a novel photoresponsive monomer, silicon‐containing azo monomer with paired mesogens in the side chain, by reacting 3‐methacryloxypropylmethyldichlorosilane with 2‐[2‐(4‐cyano‐azobenzene‐4′‐oxy)ethylene‐oxy]ethyl alcohol, a mesogenic group. Corresponding homopolymer and copolymers with methyl methacrylate were generated via radical polymerization with AIBN as a radical initiator. Investigations of their thermal properties and optical textures confirmed the monomer and the homopolymer have smectic structures. Homo‐ and copolymer films showed high potential as reversible data recording media via photoinduced alignment of azobenzene groups with irradiation of a linearly or circularly polarized light. Out of all the samples, the copolymer films with high azo dye contents showed the best resolution in the recorded data as well as the fastest response to a pump beam due to large optical birefringence induced in a write‐in process. Strong dependence of the stability of the data stored in the films on the glass transition temperature of the polymers was also observed. In addition, high‐quality holographic grating patterns were inscribed even on the copolymer film with azo molar content of only 7.0% using a modified two‐wave mixing technique. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
