In this work, the polystyrene‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PS‐b‐PEO) block copolymers with a trithiocarbonate group between the blocks were prepared by polymerization of styrene in the presence of a trithiocarbonate reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agent connected with PEO. Decomposition of the trithiocarbonate group by UV irradiation was investigated in three different types of solvent: tetrahydrofuran (THF, common solvent for both blocks), cyclohexane/dioxane mixture (selective solvent for the PS block) and N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF)/ethanol mixture (selective solvent for the PEO block). It is found that cleavage of the block copolymers can take place in all these three solvents and the cleavage ratio ranges from 76 to 86%. The micellar morphologies in selective solvents before and after cleavage were examined. It is observed that the size of the micelles is reduced after cleavage and sometimes aggregation of the micelles occurs due to removal of the corona of micelles. It shows that this work provides a facile and general method for synthesis of cleavable block copolymers. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 48: 3834–3840, 2010  相似文献

Characterization of block size in poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐poly(styrene) (PEO‐b‐PS) block copolymers could be achieved by matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry (MALDI‐TOF‐MS) after scission of the macromolecules into their constituent blocks. The performed hydrolytic cleavage was demonstrated to specifically occur on the targeted ester function in the junction group, yielding two homopolymers consisting of the constitutive initial blocks. This approach allows the use of well‐established MALDI protocols for a complete copolymer characterization while circumventing difficulties inherent to amphiphilic macromolecule ionization. Although the labile end‐group in PS homopolymer was modified by the MALDI process, PS block size could be determined from MS data since polymer chains were shown to remain intact during ionization. This methodology has been validated for a PEO‐b‐PS sample series, with two PEO of number average molecular weight (Mn) of 2000 and 5000 g mol?1 and Mn(PS) ranging from 4000 to 21,000 g mol?1. Weight average molecular weight (Mw), and thus polydispersity index, could also be reached for each segment and were consistent with values obtained by size exclusion chromatography. This approach is particularly valuable in the case of amphiphilic copolymers for which Mn values as determined by liquid state nuclear magnetic resonance might be affected by micelle formation. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new, efficient method for synthesizing stable nanoparticles with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) functionalities on the core surface, in which the micellization and crosslinking reactions occur in one pot, has been developed. First, amphiphilic PEO‐b‐PS copolymers were synthesized by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) radical polymerization of styrene using (PEO)‐based trithiocarbonate as a macro‐RAFT agent. The low molecular weight PEO‐b‐PS copolymer was dissolved in isopropyl alcohol where the block copolymer self‐assembled as core‐shell micelles, and then the core‐shell interface crosslink was performed using divinylbenzene as a crosslinking agent and 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile as an initiator. The design of the amphiphilic RAFT agent is critical for the successful preparation of core‐shell interface crosslinked micellar nanoparticles, because of RAFT functional groups interconnect PEO and polystyrene blocks. The PEO functionality of the nanoparticles surface was confirmed by 1H NMR and FTIR. The size and morphology of the nanoparticles was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and dynamic laser light scattering analysis. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined polymethylene‐block‐polystyrene (PM‐b‐PS) diblock copolymers were synthesized via a combination of polyhomologation of ylides and reversible addition‐fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT) polymerization of styrene. Trithiocarbonate‐terminated polymethylenes (PM‐TTCB) (Mn = 1400 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.09 and Mn = 2100 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.20) were obtained via an esterification of S?1‐dodecyl‐S′‐(α,α′‐dimethyl‐α″‐acetate) trithiocarbonate with hydroxyl‐terminated polymethylene synthesized via polyhomologation of ylides followed by oxidation. Then, a series of PM‐b‐PS (Mn = 5500–34,000 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.12–1.25) diblock copolymers were obtained by RAFT polymerization of styrene using PM‐TTCB as a macromolecular chain‐transfer agent. The chain structures of all the polymers were characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), gel permeation chromatography, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The thiocarbonylthio end‐group of PM‐b‐PS was transformed into thiol group by aminolysis and confirmed by UV–vis spectroscopy. In addition, microfibers and microspheres of such diblock copolymers were fabricated by electrospinning process and observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Mixed micelles of polystyrene‐b‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PS‐b‐PNIPAM) and two polystyrene‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) diblock copolymers (PS‐b‐PEO) with different chain lengths of polystyrene in aqueous solution were prepared by adding the tetrahydrofuran solutions dropwise into an excess of water. The formation and stabilization of the resultant mixed micelles were characterized by using a combination of static and dynamic light scattering. Increasing the initial concentration of PS‐b‐PEO in THF led to a decrease in the size and the weight average molar mass (〈Mw〉) of the mixed micelles when the initial concentration of PS‐b‐ PNIPAM was kept as 1 × 10?3 g/mL. The PS‐b‐PEO with shorter PS block has a more pronounced effect on the change of the size and 〈Mw〉 than that with longer PS block. The number of PS‐b‐PNIPAM in each mixed micelle decreased with the addition of PS‐b‐PEO. The average hydrodynamic radius 〈Rh〉 and average radius of gyration 〈Rg〉 of pure PS‐b‐PNIPAM and mixed micelles gradually decreased with the increase in the temperature. Both the pure micelles and mixed micelles were stable in the temperature range of 18 °C–39 °C. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 48: 1168–1174, 2010  相似文献

The dendrimer‐like copolymers [PEEGE‐(PS/PEO)]n (n ≥ 2) based on the star[Polystyrene‐Poly(ethylene oxide)‐Poly(ethoxyethyl glycidyl ether)] [star(PS‐PEO‐(PEEGE‐OH))] terpolymers were synthesized by click chemistry. First, the star‐shaped copolymers star[PS‐PEO‐(PEEGE‐Alkyne)] (also termed as [PEEGE‐(PS/PEO)]1) were synthesized by the reaction of hydroxyl end group at PEEGE arm (on star[PS‐PEO‐(PEEGE‐OH)]) with propargyl bromide. Then, the small molecule 1,4‐diazidobutane (DAB) with two azide groups and pentaerythritol tetrakis (2‐azidoisobutyrate) (PTAB) with four azide groups were synthesized and reacted with [PEEGE‐(PS/PEO)]1 by the click chemistry for dendrimer‐like [PEEGE‐(PS/PEO)]2 and [PEEGE‐(PS/PEO)]4, respectively. However, in the latter case, only the [PEEGE‐(PS/PEO)]3 was formed as the main product because of the steric effect. The final dendrimer‐like [PEEGE‐(PS/PEO)]n copolymers were characterized by SEC and 1H‐NMR in detail. Comparing with the SEC of their precursor [PEEGE‐(PS/PEO)]1, the curves of [PEEGE‐(PS/PEO)]2 was shifted to the shorter elution time, while that of [PEEGE‐(PS/PEO)]n (n ≥ 3) was shifted to the longer elution time, which was attributed to the different hydrodynamic volume derived from their separate structures and compositions in THF solution. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two new amphiphilic star graft copolymers bearing hydrophobic poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) backbone and hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) side chains with different molecular weights were synthesized by sequential reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and single electron transfer‐nitroxide radical coupling (SET‐NRC) reaction under mild conditions. RAFT homopolymerization of tert‐butyl 2‐((2‐bromopropanoyloxy)methyl)acrylate was mediated by a four‐armed chain transfer agent in a controlled way to afford a well‐defined starlike backbone with a narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn = 1.26). The target poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)‐g‐PEO (PtBA‐g‐PEO) star graft copolymers were synthesized by SET‐NRC reaction between Br‐containing PtBA‐based starlike backbone and PEO end functionalized with 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl (TEMPO) group using copper/N,N,N′,N′,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as catalytic system at ambient temperature via grafting‐onto strategy. The critical micelle concentration values of the obtained amphiphilic star graft copolymers in aqueous media and brine were determined by fluorescence probe technique using pyrene as probe. Diverse micellar morphologies were formed by varying the content of hydrophilic PEO segment as well as the initial concentration of stock solution. In addition, poly(acrylic acid)‐g‐PEO double hydrophilic star graft copolymers were obtained by selective acidic hydrolysis of hydrophobic PtBA starlike backbone without affecting PEO side chains. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The tadpole‐shaped copolymers polystyrene (PS)‐b‐[cyclic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)] [PS‐b‐(c‐PEO)] contained linear tail chains of PS and cyclic head chains of PEO were synthesized by combination of Glaser coupling with living anionic polymerization (LAP) and ring‐opening polymerization (ROP). First, the functionalized polystyrene‐glycerol (PS‐Gly) with two active hydroxyl groups at ω end was synthesized by LAP of St and the subsequent capping with 1‐ethoxyethyl glycidyl ether and then deprotection of protected hydroxyl group in acid condition. Then, using PS‐Gly as macroinitiator, the ROP of EO was performed using diphenylmethylpotassium as cocatalyst for AB2 star‐shaped copolymers PS‐b‐(PEO‐OH)2, and the alkyne group was introduced onto PEO arm end for PS‐b‐(PEO‐Alkyne)2. Finally, the intramolecular cyclization was performed by Glaser coupling reaction in pyridine/Cu(I)Br/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine system under room temperature, and tadpole‐shaped PS‐b‐(c‐PEO) was formed. The target copolymers and their intermediates were well characterized by size‐exclusion chromatography, proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in details. The thermal properties was also determined and compared to investigate the influence of architecture on properties. The results showed that tadpole‐shaped copolymers had lower Tm, Tc, and Xc than that of their precursors of AB2 star‐shaped copolymers. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Double hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PEO‐b‐PNIPAM) block copolymers were synthesized via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, using a PEO‐based chain transfer agent (PEO‐CTA). The molecular structures of the copolymers were designed to be asymmetric with a short PEO block and long PNIPAM blocks. Temperature‐induced aggregation behavior of the block copolymers in dilute aqueous solutions was systematically investigated by a combination of static and dynamic light scattering. The effects of copolymer composition, concentration (Cp), and heating rate on the size, aggregation number, and morphology of the aggregates formed at temperatures above the LCST were studied. In slow heating processes, the aggregates formed by the copolymer having the longest PNIPAM block, were found to have the same morphology (spherical “crew‐cut” micelles) within the full range of Cp. Nevertheless, for the copolymer having the shortest PNIPAM block, the morphology of the aggregates showed a great dependence on Cp. Elongation of the aggregates from spherical to ellipsoidal or even cylindrical was observed. Moreover, vesicles were observed at the highest Cp investigated. Fast heating leads to different characteristics of the aggregates, including lower sizes and aggregation numbers, higher densities, and different morphologies. Thermodynamic and kinetic mechanisms were proposed to interpret these observations, including the competition between PNIPAM intrachain collapse and interchain aggregation. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined ABC 3‐Miktoarm star‐shaped terpolymers [Poly(styrene)‐Poly(ethylene oxide)‐Poly(ε‐caprolactone)](PS‐PEO‐PCL) with different molecular weight was synthesized by combination of the “living” anionic polymerization with the ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) using macro‐initiator strategy. Firstly, the “living” poly(styryl)lithium (PS?Li+) species were capped by 1‐ethoxyethyl glycidyl ether(EEGE) quantitatively and the PS‐EEGE with an active and an ethoxyethyl‐protected hydroxyl group at the same end was obtained. Then, using PS‐EEGE and diphenylmethylpotassium (DPMK) as coinitiator, the diblock copolymers of (PS‐b‐PEO)p with the ethoxyethyl‐protected hydroxyl group at the junction point were achieved by the ROP of EO and the subsequent termination with bromoethane. The diblock copolymers of (PS‐b‐PEO)d with the active hydroxyl group at the junction point were recovered via the cleavage of ethoxyethyl group on (PS‐b‐PEO)p by acidolysis and saponification successively. Finally, the copolymers (PS‐b‐PEO)d served as the macro‐initiator for ROP of ε‐CL in the presence of tin(II)‐bis(2‐ethylhexanoate)(Sn(Oct)2) and the star(PS‐PEO‐PCL) terpolymers were obtained. The target terpolymers and the intermediates were well characterized by 1H‐NMR, MALDI‐TOF MS, FTIR, and SEC. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel method for preparation the comb‐like copolymers with amphihilic poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐poly(styrene) (PEO‐b‐PS) graft chains by “graft from” and “graft onto” strategies were reported. The ring‐opening copolymerization of ethylene oxide (EO) and ethoxyethyl glycidyl ether (EEGE) was carried out first using α‐methoxyl‐ω‐hydroxyl‐poly(ethylene oxide) (mPEO) and diphenylmethyl potassium (DPMK) as coinitiation system, then the EEGE units on resulting linear copolymer mPEO‐b‐Poly(EO‐co‐EEGE) were hydrolyzed and the recovered hydroxyl groups were reacted with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide. The obtained macroinitiator mPEO‐b‐Poly(EO‐co‐BiBGE) can initiate the polymerization of styrene by ATRP via the “Graft from” strategy, and the comb‐like copolymers mPEO‐b‐[Poly(EO‐co‐Gly)‐g‐PS] were obtained. Afterwards, the TEMPO‐PEO was prepared by ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of EO initiated by 4‐hydroxyl‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl piperdinyl‐oxy (HTEMPO) and DPMK, and then coupled with mPEO‐b‐[Poly(EO‐co‐Gly)‐g‐PS] by atom transfer nitroxide radical coupling reaction in the presence of cuprous bromide (CuBr)/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) via “Graft onto” method. The comb‐like block copolymers mPEO‐b‐[Poly(EO‐co‐Gly)‐g‐(PS‐b‐PEO)] were obtained with high efficiency (≥90%). The final product and intermediates were characterized in detail. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 47: 1930–1938, 2009  相似文献

Polyisobutylene‐b‐poly(N,N‐diethylacrylamide) (PIB‐b‐PDEAAm) well‐defined amphiphilic diblock copolymers were synthesized by sequential living carbocationic polymerization and reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The hydrophobic polyisobutylene segment was first built by living carbocationic polymerization of isobutylene at ?70 ° C followed by multistep transformations to give a well‐defined (Mw/Mn = 1.22) macromolecular chain transfer agent, PIB‐CTA. The hydrophilic poly(N,N‐diethylacrylamide) block was constructed by PIB‐CTA mediated RAFT polymerization of N,N‐diethylacrylamide at 60 ° C to afford the desired well‐defined PIB‐b‐PDEAAm diblock copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤1.26). Fluorescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were employed to investigate the self‐assembly behavior of PIB‐b‐PDEAAm amphiphilic diblock copolymers in aqueous media. These diblock copolymers also exhibited thermo‐responsive phase behavior, which was confirmed by UV‐Vis and DLS measurements. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization is a more robust and versatile approach than other living free radical polymerization methods, providing a reactive thiocarbonylthio end group. A series of well‐defined star diblock [poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)]4 (SPCLNIP) copolymers were synthesized by R‐RAFT polymerization of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) using [PCL‐DDAT]4 (SPCL‐DDAT) as a star macro‐RAFT agent (DDAT: S‐1‐dodecyl‐S′‐(α, α′‐dimethyl‐α″‐acetic acid) trithiocarbonate). The R‐RAFT polymerization showed a controlled/“living” character, proceeding with pseudo‐first‐order kinetics. All these star polymers with different molecular weights exhibited narrow molecular weight distributions of less than 1.2. The effect of polymerization temperature and molecular weight of the star macro‐RAFT agent on the polymerization kinetics of NIPAAm monomers was also addressed. Hardly any radical–radical coupling by‐products were detected, while linear side products were kept to a minimum by careful control over polymerization conditions. The trithiocarbonate groups were transferred to polymer chain ends by R‐RAFT polymerization, providing potential possibility of further modification by thiocarbonylthio chemistry. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Using sequential RAFT polymerization, single monomer insertion, and “click” chemistry, a series of triblock copolymers, poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐polystyrene‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide), PEO‐b‐PS‐b‐PEO, were synthesized, where one of the two junction points is a UV cleavable ortho‐nitrobenzyl (ONB). Ordered patterns of PEO‐b‐PS‐b‐PEO were produced by solvent vapor annealing. Upon exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, the PEO‐b‐PS‐b‐PEO was converted into a mixture of a PEO homopolymer and a PS‐b‐PEO diblock copolymer. It was found that the microdomain spacing could be tuned by adjusting the UV exposure time, due to the change in the copolymer architecture and the swelling of the PEO microdomain by the PEO homopolymer produced. By selective area exposure of the PEO‐b‐PS‐b‐PEO thin films, the domain spacing was changed over selected locations across the film, generating patterns of different microdomain sizes. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The first use of PSnb‐PEOmb‐PSn block copolymers (PS = polystyrene, PEO = poly(ethylene oxide)) as solid hosts for iodine/iodide electrolytes in dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) is described. Using the benchmark photosensitizer N719, DSSC based on the quasi solid‐state electrolytes afforded efficiencies up to 6.7%, to be compared with an efficiency of 7.3% obtained in similar conditions with a conventional iodine/iodide liquid electrolyte. By varying the PS:PEO relative volume ratio in the block copolymers different properties and morphologies were obtained. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐poly(isoprene) (PEO‐b‐PI) diblock copolymers were prepared by nitroxide‐mediated polymerization of isoprene from alkoxyamine‐terminal poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). PEO monomethyl ether (Mn ≈ 5200 g/mol) was functionalized by esterification with 2‐bromopropionyl bromide with subsequent copper‐mediated replacement of the terminal bromine with 2,2,5‐trimethyl‐4‐phenyl‐3‐azahexane‐3‐nitroxide. The resulting PEO‐alkoxyamine macroinitiator was used to initiate polymerization of isoprene in bulk and in solution at 125 °C to yield PEO‐b‐PI block copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.1). Polymerizations were first order in isoprene through 35% conversion. Micellar aggregates of PEO‐b‐PI in aqueous solution were crosslinked by treatment with a water‐soluble redox initiating system, and persistent micellar structures were observed in the dry state by AFM. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined poly(L ‐lactide)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PLLA‐b‐PEO) copolymers with different branch arms were synthesized via the controlled ring‐opening polymerization of L ‐lactide followed by a coupling reaction with carboxyl‐terminated poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO); these copolymers included both star‐shaped copolymers having four arms (4sPLLA‐b‐PEO) and six arms (6sPLLA‐b‐PEO) and linear analogues having one arm (LPLLA‐b‐PEO) and two arms (2LPLLA‐b‐PEO). The maximal melting point, cold‐crystallization temperature, and degree of crystallinity (Xc) of the poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) block within PLLA‐b‐PEO decreased as the branch arm number increased, whereas Xc of the PEO block within the copolymers inversely increased. This was mainly attributed to the relatively decreasing arm length ratio of PLLA to PEO, which resulted in various PLLA crystallization effects restricting the PEO block. These results indicated that both the PLLA and PEO blocks within the block copolymers mutually influenced each other, and the crystallization of both the PLLA and PEO blocks within the PLLA‐b‐PEO copolymers could be adjusted through both the branch arm number and the arm length of each block. Moreover, the spherulitic growth rate (G) decreased as the branch arm number increased: G6sPLLA‐b‐PEO < G4sPLLA‐b‐PEO < G2LPLLA‐b‐PEO < GLPLLA‐b‐PEO. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New block copolymers Polystyrene‐b‐poly (2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl acrylate)‐b‐Polystyrene (PS‐PTFEA‐PS) with controlled molecular weight (Mn=5000‐11000 g?mol?1) and narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn=1.13‐1.17) were synthesized via RAFT polymerization. The molecular structure and component of PS‐PTFEA‐PS block copolymers were characterized through 1H NMR, 19F NMR, GPC, FT‐IR and elemental analysis. The porous films of such copolymers with average pore size of 0.80‐1.34 μm and good regularity were fabricated via a static breath‐figure (BF) process. The effects of solvent, temperature, and polymer concentration on the surface morphology of such film were investigated. In addition, microstructured spheres and fibers of such block copolymers were fabricated by electrospinning process and observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Furthermore, the hydrophobicity of porous films, spheres, and fibers was investigated. The synthesis of two well‐defined 2,2,5‐trimethyl‐4‐phenyl‐3‐azahexane‐3‐nitroxide‐terminated poly(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline) with narrow dispersity (Mw/Mn = 1.1) has been achieved for the first time. The insertion of the alkoxyamine end groups at one or both ends of poly(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline) (PMEOX) chains has been successfully done using a method based on “terminating reagent method.” These macroinitiators have molecular weights ranging from 6.3 × 103 to 9.4 × 103 g mol?1. In contrast, attempt to introduce the alkoxyamine group at one end of PMEOX chain through the “initiator method” has furnished a mixture of alkoxyamine‐graft polyoxazolines because of rearrangement of alkoxyamine occurring during the synthesis of PMEOX. The macroinitiators obtained by terminating reagent method have been used successfully for polymerization of styrene by nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMP), which exhibited all the expected features of a controlled system. The control of NMP has been proved by a good agreement between theoretical and experimental molecular weights and by narrow dispersity (Mw/Mn < 1.2). Different types of well‐defined multiblock copolymers have been prepared: diblock copolymers poly[(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline)‐b‐(styrene)] (PMEOX‐b‐PS) and, for the first time, triblock copolymers poly[(styrene)‐b‐(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline)‐b‐(styrene)] (PS‐b‐PMEOX‐b‐PS). © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined amphiphilic diblock copolymers consisting of hydrophobic polyisobutylene (PIB) and hydrophilic poly(2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEMA) segments was synthesized via the combination of living carbocationic polymerization and reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Living carbocationic polymerization of isobutylene followed by end‐capping with 1,3‐butadiene was first performed at ?70 °C to give a well‐defined allyl‐Cl‐terminated PIB with a low polydispersity (Mw/Mn =1.29). This end‐functionalized PIB was further converted to a macromolecular chain transfer agent for mediating RAFT block copolymerization of 2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate at 60 °C in tetrahydrofuran to afford the target well‐defined PIB‐b‐PDEAEMA diblock copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≤1.22). The self‐assembly behavior of these amphiphilic diblock copolymers in aqueous media was investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy and transmission electron microscope, and furthermore, their pH‐responsive behavior was studied by UV‐vis and dynamic light scattering. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
