We propose a micromixer for obtaining better efficiency of vortex induced electroosmotic mixing of non-Newtonian bio-fluids at a relatively higher flow rate, which finds relevance in many biomedical and biological applications. To represent the rheology of non-Newtonian fluid, we consider the Carreau model in this study, while the applied electric field drives the constituent components in the micromixer. We show that the spatial variation of the applied field, triggered by the topological change of the bounding surfaces, upon interacting with the non-uniform surface potential gives rise to efficient mixing as realized by the formation of vortices in the proposed micromixer. Also, we show that the phase-lag between surface potential leads to the formation of asymmetric vortices. This behavior offers better mixing performance following the appearance of undulation on the flow pattern. Finally, we establish that the assumption of a point charge in the paradigm of electroosmotic mixing, which is not realistic as well, under-predicts the mixing efficiency at higher amplitude of the non-uniform zeta potential. The inferences of the present analysis may guide as a design tool for micromixer where rheological properties of the fluid and flow actuation parameters can be simultaneously tuned to obtain phenomenal enhancement in mixing efficiency.  相似文献

In this article, we report the design of a microchip based hydraulic pump that employs a sodium silicate derived sol–gel structure for generating pressure-driven flow within a microfluidic network. The reported sol–gel structure was fabricated in a chosen location of our device by selectively retaining sodium silicate solution within a sub-micrometer deep segment via capillary forces, and then providing the precursor material appropriate thermal treatment. It was shown that while the molecular weight cut-off for these membranes is at least an order of magnitude smaller than their photo-polymerized counterparts, their electrical conductance is significant. Moreover, unlike their polymeric counterparts these structures were found to be capable of blocking electroosmotic flow, thereby generating a pressure-gradient around their interface with an open microchannel upon application of an electric field across the microchannel–membrane junction. In this work, a fraction of the resulting hydrodynamic flow was successfully guided to an electric field-free analysis channel to implement a pressure-driven assay. Our experiments show that the pressure-driven velocity produced in the analysis channel of our device varied linearly with the voltage applied across the sol–gel membrane and was nearly independent of the cross-sectional dimensions of the membrane and the microfluidic channels. With our current design pressure-driven velocities up to 1.7 mm/s were generated for an applied voltage of 2 kV, which easily covers the range of flow speeds that can minimize the plate height in most microfluidic separations. Finally, the functionality of our device was demonstrated by implementing a reverse phase chromatographic separation in the analysis channel of our device using the pressure-driven flow generated on-chip.  相似文献

Nonlinear and nonequilibrium electrophoresis of spherical particles of radius a is shown to be possible when the solid surface allows field or current penetration. At low particle Peclet numbers, transient capacitative charging occurs until the surface polarization completely screens the external field. For a DC applied field [see text], the resulting electrokinetic velocity reaches Dukhin's maximum value of [formula: see text], where [see text] and mu are the liquid permittivity and viscosity. At high Peclet numbers, electroosmotic convection of the electroneutral bulk stops the transient charging before complete field-line exclusion. For an ion-selective and conducting spherical granule, the polarization is then determined by the steady-state Ohmic current driven by the penetrated external field. The high-Peclet electrokinetic velocity is lower, diffusivity-dependent and scales as [see text].  相似文献

A fast passive and planar liquid sample micromixer   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A novel microdevice for passively mixing liquid samples based on surface tension and a geometrical mixing chamber is presented. Due to the laminar flow regime on the microscale, mixing becomes difficult if not impossible. We present a micromixer where a constantly changing time dependent flow pattern inside a two sample liquid plug is created as the plug simply passes through the planar mixer chamber. The device requires no actuation during mixing and is fabricated using a single etch process. The effective mixing of two coloured liquid samples is demonstrated.  相似文献

We demonstrate new principles of microfluidic pumping and mixing by electronic components integrated into a microfluidic chip. The miniature diodes embedded into the microchannel walls rectify the voltage induced between their electrodes from an external alternating electric field. The resulting electroosmotic flows, developed in the vicinity of the diode surfaces, were utilized for pumping or mixing of the fluid in the microfluidic channel. The flow velocity of liquid pumped by the diodes facing in the same direction linearly increased with the magnitude of the applied voltage and the pumping direction could be controlled by the pH of the solutions. The transverse flow driven by the localized electroosmotic flux between diodes oriented oppositely on the microchannel was used in microfluidic mixers. The experimental results were interpreted by numerical simulations of the electrohydrodynamic flows. The techniques may be used in novel actively controlled microfluidic-electronic chips.  相似文献

Microfluidics is becoming increasingly more interesting for chemical engineering applications. This article takes a closer look at the possibilities of performing a precipitation reaction in a microfluidic device. This specific type of reaction demands for instance fast mixing. We take sodium chloride precipitation as a model anti‐solvent precipitation reaction. Effective mixing is achieved by applying an electric field over the fluid. The dispersion of a plug is measured when it is transported by pressure driven flow or electroosmotic flow. These two different types of transportation are investigated.  相似文献

Sample injection in microchip-based capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) frequently rely on the use of electric fields which can introduce differences in the injected volume for the various analytes depending on their electrophoretic mobilities and molecular diffusivities. While such injection biases may be minimized by employing hydrodynamic flows during the injection process, this approach typically requires excellent dynamic control over the pressure gradients applied within a microfluidic network. The current article describes a microchip device that offers this needed control by generating pressure gradients on-chip via electrokinetic means to minimize the dead volume in the system. In order to realize the desired pressure-generation capability, an electric field was applied across two channel segments of different depths to produce a mismatch in the electroosmotic flow rate at their junction. The resulting pressure-driven flow was then utilized to introduce sample zones into a CZE channel with minimal injection bias. The reported injection strategy allowed the introduction of narrow sample plugs with spatial standard deviations down to about 45 μm. This injection technique was later integrated to a capillary zone electrophoresis process for analyzing amino acid samples yielding separation resolutions of about 4–6 for the analyte peaks in a 3 cm long analysis channel.  相似文献

In microfluidics the Reynolds number is small, preventing turbulence as a tool for mixing, while diffusion is that slow that time does not yield an alternative. Mixing in microfluidics therefore must rely on chaotic advection, as well-known from polymer technology practice where on macroscale the high viscosity makes the Reynolds numbers low and diffusion slow. The mapping method is used to analyze and optimize mixing also in microfluidic devices. We investigate passive mixers like the staggered herringbone micromixer (SHM), the barrier embedded micromixer (BEM) and a three-dimensional serpentine channel (3D-SC). Active mixing is obtained via incorporating particles that introduce a hyperbolic flow in e.g. two dimensional serpentine channels. Magnetic beads chains-up in a flow after switching on a magnetic field. Rotating the field creates a physical rotor moving the flow field. The Mason number represents the ratio of viscous forces to the magnetic field strength and its value determines the fate of the rotor: a single, an alternating single and double, or a multiple part chain-rotor results. The type of rotor determines the mixing quality with best results in the alternating case where crossing streamlines introduce chaotic advection. Finally, an active mixing device is proposed that mimics the cilia in nature. The transverse flow induced by their motion indeed enhances mixing at the microscale.  相似文献

A novel fluid micromixer based on pneumatic perturbation and passive structures was developed. This micromixer facilitates integration and is applicable to fluid mixing over a wide range of flow rates. The microfluidic mixing device consists of an S-shaped structure with two mixing chambers and two barriers, and two pneumatic chambers designed over the S-shaped channel. The performance of the micromixer for fluids with wide variation of flow rates was significantly improved owing to the integration of the pneumatic mixing components with the passive mixing structures. The mixing mechanism of the passive mixing structures was explored by numerical simulation, and the influencing factors on the mixing efficiency were investigated. The results showed that when using a gas pressure of 0.26 MPa and a 100 m-thick polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) pneumatic diaphragm, the mixing of fluids with flow rates ranging from 1 to 650 L/min was achieved with a pumping frequency of 50 Hz. Fast synthesis of CdS quantum dots was realized using this device. Smaller particles were obtained, and the size distribution was greatly improved compared with those obtained using conventional methods.  相似文献

Electroosmotic mixing in microchannels   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Mixing is an essential, yet challenging, process step for many Lab on a Chip (LOC) applications. This paper presents a method of mixing for microfluidic devices that relies upon electroosmotic flow. In physical tests and in computer simulations, we periodically vary the electric field with time to mix two aqueous solutions. Good mixing is shown to occur when the electroosmotic flow at the two inlets pulse out of phase, the Strouhal number is on the order of 1, and the pulse volumes are on the order of the intersection volume.  相似文献

Microchannels in microfluidic devices are frequently chemically modified to introduce specific functional elements or operational modalities. In this work, we describe a miniaturized hydraulic pump created by coating selective channels in a glass microfluidic manifold with a polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) that alters the surface charge of the substrate. Pressure-driven flow is generated due to a mismatch in the electroosmotic flow (EOF) rates induced upon the application of an electric field to a tee channel junction that has one arm coated with a positively charged PEM and the other arm left uncoated in its native state. In this design, the channels that generate the hydraulic pressure are interconnected via the third arm of the tee to a field-free analysis channel for performing pressure-driven separations. We have also shown that modifications in the cross-sectional area of the channels in the pumping unit can enhance the hydrodynamic flow through the separation section of the manifold. The integrated device has been demonstrated by separating Coumarin dyes in the field-free analysis channel using open-channel liquid chromatography under pressure-driven flow conditions.  相似文献

Ultrafast active mixer using polyelectrolytic ion extractor   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Chun H  Kim HC  Chung TD 《Lab on a chip》2008,8(5):764-771
We report on a low voltage, straight/smooth surface, and efficient active micromixer. The mixing principle is based on alternative ion depletion-enrichment using a pair of positively charged polyelectrolytic gel electrodes (pPGEs), which face each other joined by a microchannel. This system has an external AC signal source electrically connected to the pPGEs via the respective 1 M KCl solutions and Ag/AgCl electrodes. When an electric bias is applied between the two pPGEs, anions are extracted through one of the pPGEs to create a local ion-deficient region. Simultaneously, an ion-rich area appears near the other pPGE due to an inward anionic flux. As the direction of the charge flow is periodically reversed by the AC signal source, the ion depletion-enrichment regions are alternately swapped with each other on the 'push-pull' basis. The turmoil between the pPGEs quickly mixes the solutions in the microchannel without any mechanical moving part or specially machined structures. In the proposed system, both AC frequency and current density can be easily and finely controlled so that one can quickly find the optimal conditions for a given sample. The micromixer as made showed a mixing efficiency higher than 90% for sample solutions of 1 mM Rhodamine 6G and PBS at pH 7.4 when the flow rate was under 6 mm s(-1). In addition to the solution-solution mixing, the micromixer can effectively mix suspended microparticles with solution. As a representative example, rapid and efficient lysis of human red blood cells was demonstrated allowing minimal damage of the white blood cells.  相似文献

This paper proposes the design of a passive micromixer that utilizes the self-circulation of the fluid in the mixing chamber for applications in the Micro Total Analysis Systems (microTAS). The micromixer with a total volume of about 20 microL and consisting of an inlet port, a circular mixing chamber and an outlet port was designed. The device was actuated by a pneumatic pump to induce self-circulation of the fluid. The self-circulation phenomenon in the micromixer was predicted by the computational simulation of the microfluidic dynamics. Flow visualization with fluorescence tracer was used to verify the numerical simulations and indicated that the simulated and the experimental results were in good agreement. Besides, an index for quantifying the mixing performance was employed to compare different situations and to demonstrate the advantages of the self-circulation mixer. The mixing efficiencies in the mixer under different Reynolds numbers (Re) were evaluated numerically. The numerical results revealed that the mixing efficiency of the mixer with self-circulation was 1.7 to 2 times higher than that of the straight channel without a mixing chamber at Re= 150. When Re was as low as 50, the mixing efficiency of the mixer with self-circulation in the mixing chamber was improved approximately 30% higher than that in the straight channel. The results indicated that the self-circulation in the mixer could enhance the mixing even at low Re. The features of simple mixing method and fabrication process make this micromixer ideally suitable for microTAS applications.  相似文献

Polymer coating is widely used to modulate the fluid flow in micro- and nanometer pores and flows that are sensitive to surface properties such as electroosmotic flow. Here we report on the dissipative particle dynamics simulations of the modulation of electroosmotic flow by neutral polymers. In these coarse-grained simulations, fluid and polymers are resolved at a scale comparable to polymer size and the two-way coupling between polymer conformation and fluid flow are explicitly accounted for. The simulations indicate that, in the parameter space explored, the screening of electroosmotic flow by polymers decreases nonlinearly as the external electric field increases. Such an observation is understood by analyzing the surface coverage by polymers, height and orientation of the grafted polymers, and the two different modes of flow screening by polymer segments as a function of the external electric field. Understanding the effects and interplay of these physical processes is crucial for the rational design of polymer coating for flow control in microfluidic and nanofluidic systems.  相似文献

A microfluidic device capable of rapidly analyzing cells in a high-throughput manner using electrical cell lysis is further characterized. In the experiments performed, cell lysis events were studied using an electron multiplying charge coupled device camera with high frame rate (>100 fps) data collection. It was found that, with this microfluidic design, the path that a cell follows through the electric field affects the amount of lysate injected into the analysis channel. Elimination of variable flow paths through the electric field was achieved by coating the analysis channel with a polyamine compound to reverse the electroosmotic flow (EOF). EOF reversal forced the cells to take the same path through the electric field. The improved control of the cell trajectory will reduce device-imposed bias on the analysis and maximizes the amount of lysate injected into the analysis channel for each cell, resulting in improved analyte detection capabilities.  相似文献

This paper presents a T-shaped micromixer featuring 45 degrees parallelogram barriers (PBs) within the mixing channel. The presented device obtains a rapid mixing of two sample fluids with conductivity ratio of 10:1 (sample concentration:running buffer concentration) by means of the electrokinetic instability-induced shedding effects which are produced when a direct current (DC) electric field of an appropriate intensity is applied. The presented device uses a single high-voltage power source to simultaneously drive and mix the sample fluids. The effectiveness of the mixer is characterized experimentally as a function of the applied electrical field intensity and the extent to which the PBs obstruct the mixing channel. The experimental results indicate that the mixing performance reaches 91% at a cross-section located 2.3 mm downstream of the T-junction when the barriers obstruct 4/5 of the channel width and an electrical field of 300 V/cm is applied. The micromixing method presented in this study provides a simple low-cost solution to mixing problems in lab-on-a-chip systems.  相似文献

AC electroosmotic micromixer for chemical processing in a microchannel   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A rapid micromixer of fluids in a microchannel is presented. The mixer uses AC electroosmotic flow, which is induced by applying an AC voltage to a pair of coplanar meandering electrodes configured in parallel to the channel. To demonstrate performance of the mixer, dilution experiments were conducted using a dye solution in a channel of 120 microm width. Rapid mixing was observed for flow velocity up to 12 mm s(-1). The mixing time was 0.18 s, which was 20-fold faster than that of diffusional mixing without an additional mixing mechanism. Compared with the performance of reported micromixers, the present mixer worked with a shorter mixing length, particularly at low Peclet numbers (Pe < 2 x 10(3)).  相似文献

Sample transport and electrokinetic injection bias are well characterized in capillary electrophoresis and simple microchips, but a thorough understanding of sample transport on devices combining electroosmosis, electrophoresis, and pressure-driven flow is lacking. In this work, we evaluate the effects of electric fields from 0 to 300 V/cm, electrophoretic mobilities from 10(-4) to 10(-6) cm(2)/Vs, and pressure-driven fluid velocities from 50 to 250 μm/s on sample injection in a microfluidic chemical cytometry device. By studying a continuous sample stream, we find that increasing electric field strength and electrophoretic mobility result in improved injection and that COMSOL simulations accurately predict sample transport. The effects of pressure-driven fluid velocity on injection are complex, and relative concentration values lie on a surface defined by pressure-driven flow rates. For high-mobility analytes, this surface is flat, and sample injection is robust despite fluctuations in flow rate. For lower mobility analytes, the surface becomes steeper, and injection depends strongly on pressure-driven flow. These results indicate generally that device design must account for analyte characteristics and specifically that this device is suited to high-mobility analytes. We demonstrate that for a suitable pair of peptides fluctuations in injection volume are correlated; electrokinetic injection bias is minimized; and electrophoretic separation is achieved.  相似文献

Selective transport and sorting of particles in microfluidic devices by electroosmosis is complicated due to superposition of uncontrolled hydrodynamic pressure contributions on the electroosmotic force. In this paper, we present a microfluidic concept for the reliable and simple separation and sorting of particles in a microchip by electroosmosis combined with pressure-driven flow. The presented device allows fluid quantities to be switched and particles to be sorted within a channel manifold using only a single power supply with fixed voltage and an electric switch. Consequently, chip operation and fluid switching procedure are greatly simplified compared to a situation, in which several independent power sources are used for flow balancing, as is the common procedure. With the triple-T channel design presented, backpressure flow disturbing the electrokinetic fluid and particle separation process is eliminated by introducing controlled opposed hydrodynamic flow of buffer from side channels. This pressure-driven flow is generated on-chip by setting up differences in the reservoir pressures in a defined manner. A detailed flow analysis based on the equivalence of fluid flow and electric current is performed and the conditions for reliable chip function are worked out.  相似文献

The paper presents a micro mixer structures fabricated by an interesting technique of embedded twisted threads in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), which is polymerized and cured. After removing the threads carefully, the remaining channel structure is studied concerning the flows and mixing characteristics. Three-, four-, and six-strand-helical fluid microchannels (d h ?=?100?μm, L?=?3?mm) with a specified helix angle (θ?=?22°) were used to conduct the experiments. The electroosmotic flow, inlet velocity, local velocity at specified positions, and sample concentration distribution along a downstream direction were measured via microparticle image velocimetry and laser-induced fluorescence techniques, respectively. Local mixing efficiency and mixing length were obtained at very low Reynolds numbers (≤0.0242) and low Peclet numbers (≤65.8). Results show that four-strand micromixer has the best mixing performance. Finally, a correlation of mixing length with Pe was developed, which might be applicable to a microbiomedical device design.  相似文献
