Summary Strong uniqueness has proved to be an important condition in demonstrating the second order convergence of the generalised Gauss-Newton method for discrete nonlinear approximation problems [4]. Here we compare strong uniqueness with the multiplier condition which has also been used for this purpose. We describe strong uniqueness in terms of the local geometry of the unit ball and properties of the problem functions at the minimum point. When the norm is polyhedral we are able to give necessary and sufficient conditions for the second order convergence of the generalised Gauss-Newton algorithm.  相似文献

In this note we establish the local existence and global uniqueness of strong solutions to the Boussinesq approximation for incompressible fluids in three-dimensional open channels considering the “do nothing” conditions prescribed at the in/outlets. The existence proof rests on estimates for the corresponding linear problems followed by a fixed point argument. The uniqueness is proved using the technique of Gronwall lemma.  相似文献

In this paper, we study a quasilinear hyperbolic equation with strong damping. Firstly, by use of the successive approximation method and a series of classical estimates, we prove the local existence and uniqueness of a weak solution. The aim of this conjoint paper is to discuss the problem of the best rational approximation with interpolating constraints. In part I, we give the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of the best rational approximations and establish some characterization theorem for such approximations. The problems of uniqueness, the properties for the set of best approximations, strong uniqueness and continuity of best approximation operator are considered in Part II. Some criteria for extreme points and strong U-points in Cesàro-Orlicz spaces are given. In consequence we find a Cesàro-Orlicz sequence space different from c0 which has no extreme points. Some examples show that in these spaces the notion of the strong U-point is essentially stronger than the notion of the extreme point. Various examples presented in this paper show that there are some differences between criteria for extreme points and strong U-points in Orlicz spaces and in Cesàro-Orlicz spaces. We also show that the uniqueness of the local best approximation needs the notion of SU-point, that is, the notion of the extreme point is not strong enough here.  相似文献

In this paper we analyze from the mathematical point of view a model for small vertical vibrations of an elastic string with fixed ends and the density of the material being not constant. We employ techniques of functional analysis, mainly a theorem of compactness for the analysis of the approximation of Faedo-Galerkin method. The problem is considered of best approximation of finite number of functions simultaneously. For a very general class of norms, characterization results are derived. The main part of the paper is concerned with proving uniqueness and strong uniqueness theorems. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions for a class of multivalued stochastic partial differential equations with maximal monotone drift on Banach space driven by multiplicative Lévy noise. We also establish the strong convergence result for solutions of the approximating equations where the maximal monotone drift operator is replaced by its Yosida approximation. We consider a one-dimensional radiation hydrodynamics model in the case of the equilibrium diffusion approximation which is described by the compressible Navier-Stokes system with the additional terms in the pressure and internal energy respectively, which embody the effect of radiation. Under the physical growth conditions on the heat conductivity, we establish the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to the Cauchy problem with large initial data, where the initial density and velocity may have differing constant states at infinity. Moreover, we show that if there is no vacuum in the initial density, then, the vacuum and concentration of the density will never occur in any finite time.  相似文献

In [6] [7], the coefficients of given equation are supposed to be Lipschitz continuity or to be a bit weaker than Lipschitz continuity for establishing existence and uniqueness of the solution. In this paper, we show that, under the assumption of so-called pathwise uniqueness to the equation, a weaker restriction to coefficients than these mentioned above will recapture the convergence of Carathéodory approximation of the equation in the strong sense.  相似文献
