Two series of ferroelectric liquid crystals containing a phenyl biphenyl carboxylate mesogenic group and oligooxyethylene spacers were synthesized. The mesomorphic behaviours of the compounds were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), optical polarizing microscopy (POM) and powder X-ray diffraction measurements. These series all contain a smectic A (SA), a chiral smectic C (SC) and a crystal E (Cr E) phase sequence. The ordered smectic Cr E phase was observed for the short spacer chain (n = 0, 1, 2) homologues of the two series. Moreover, the mesomorphic properties are discussed as a function of the oligooxyethylene spacer length, and the position of the aromatic core rings. These results indicate that the structures with a rigid part (biphenyl group) closer to the flexible spacer chain (oxyethylene unit) tend to form the symmetrical smectic SA and Cr E phases.  相似文献

Ten varieties of liquid-crystalline side chain polymers, poly(cholesteryl-ω-(methacryloyloxy)alkanoates) (pChMO-n, n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 15; the carbon number of the alkyl chain), were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and small angle X-ray scattering. On and after the first cooling run from the isotropic state, these polymethacrylates gave the same smectic phase. X-ray investigations showed that pChMO-n with short spacers (n = 1-7) has a two layer (bilayer) SA packing structure, and pChMO-n with a longer spacer (n= 15) has a single layer (monolayer) SA packing structure. However, these two types of packing structure appear simultaneously in pChMO-n (n = 9s-11) below their phase transition temperature. To clarify the manner of the coexistence of the two different structures the smectic layer spacing and X-ray diffraction patterns were examined by small angle X-ray scattering at various temperatures.  相似文献

Some of the higher homologues of the N-(p-n-alkoxybenzylidene)p-n-alkylanilines, n O.m, compounds with n ≧ 8 and m ≧ 5 have been synthesized and the smectic polymesomorphism studied. The transition temperatures were obtained from both thermal microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. These compounds in the n O.m series exhibit the usual phase sequences, viz. SASCSBSG, and SASBSG apart from SASCSFSG by 9O.8 (and some higher n O.m, like 9O.6). These phases were confirmed by miscibility studies with standard materials. The smectic F phase in 9O.8 compound is also confirmed by an X-ray diffraction study.  相似文献

A homologous series of chiral materials, (R)-2-pentyl (S)-2-(6-(4-(4'-alkoxyphenyl)benzoyloxy)-2-naphthyl)propionates (R,S)PmPBNP (m = 7-14), derived from a naphthalene ring as part of the core structure in conjunction with a chiral tail containing two stereocentres has been synthesized for the investigation. The twist grain boundary smectic A (TGBA) and smectic C (TGB*C) phases were characterized by the microscopic textures of compounds packed in two untreated glass slides, Cano wedge cell, or homogeneously aligned cell. It was found that the occurrence of these phases depend remarkably on the nature of alkyl chain length m; in the case of shorter alkyl chain length (m = 7-10), the TGBA phase behaves as a metastable-like phase mediated between N and SA phases in a short temperature range, whereas in the longer chain length (m' 11-14), both the TGBA and TGBC phases become thermodynamically stable phases with a wide temperature range. Consequently, this series of chiral materials resulted in two different mesophase sequences: N-TGBA-SA-SCand N-TGBA-TGBC. A kind of parquet texture displaying two types of domain with different relative directions of the smectic layer normal was found in the S phase from the materials (m = 9-14) packed in 2 μm homogeneously aligned cells and cooled down from the isotropic liquid without applying an electric field. The magnitudes of spontaneous polarization (Ps) in the SC and TGBC phases showed that the Ps values are nearly the same for all compounds at the same temperature below the Curie point. Dielectric measurements revealed no significant occurrence of soft mode switching in the TGBA phase.  相似文献

The mesogenicities of 4,4'-dialkyloxyquaterphenyls (DAQP) and dialkyl quaterphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylates (DCQP) were studied by differential scanning calorimetry, optical microscopy and miscibility tests. The DAQP homologues, for which the number of carbon atoms in the alkyloxy group (n) is 1-9, showed a SA phase, and the higher homologues (n = 9-18) showed a Sc phase. The propyl, butyl and pentyl esters of DCQP showed a SA phase, and the octyl and dodecyl esters showed SA and Sc phases. The isopropyl, isobutyl, 2-ethylhexyl and cyclohexyl esters showed a Sc phase and the branching of the alkyl group strikingly lowered the mesophase thermal stabilities.  相似文献

Chiral non-symmetric dimeric liquid crystals consisting of a cholesteryl ester moiety as chiral entity and a biphenyl aromatic core, interconnected through n-butyl (C4) or n-pentyl (C5) parity alkylene spacers, have been synthesized and investigated for their liquid crystalline properties. All the dimers exhibit enantiotropic mesophases. The first member of the dimers having the C4 central spacer exhibit only the chiral nematic (N*) mesophase, while the higher homologues also show smectic A (SmA) and twist grain boundary (TGB) mesophases. The dimers of the other series containing the C5 central spacer also have stable SmA, TGB and N* mesophases, except for the first which does not show the TGB phase. Both series of compounds show a weak odd-even effect with terminal alkyl chain substitution, while the spacer length has a marked influence on the phase transition temperatures.  相似文献

Three series of ferroelectric liquid crystals containing a (2S)-2-(6-(4-hydroxybiphenyl-4'-carbonyloxy)-2'-naphthyl)propionate mesogenic group and oligo(oxyethylene) spacers were synthesized. These obtained liquid crystal compounds were characterized by NMR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), optical polarized microscopy (POM), and X-ray powder diffraction measurements. Some of these materials containing four phenyl rings of ester cores (i.e. -Ph-Ph-COO-naph-) and chiral heptyl tail exhibited a rich mesomorphic behaviour, a blue phase (BP), a cholesteric phase (Ch), a smectic A (SA), a twist grain boundary A (TGBA), and a chiral smectic C (SC*) phase. Another series containing four phenyl rings of ester cores and chiral butyl and pentyl chain tails revealed only a SA phase and a SC* phase. Moreover, a crystal E phase was observed in the short spacer chain (n = 0 or 1) homologues of three series of compounds. Also, the mesomorphism properties were discussed as a function of spacer units, numbers of aromatic rings of core, and different terminal asymmetric moieties.  相似文献

Novel derivative series of the well known bent-shaped P-n-O-PIMB liquid crystal mesogens, referred to as '4Br-P-n-O-PIMB', '4Cl-P-n-O-PIMB' and '5Cl-P-n-O-PIMB', having halogen atoms substituted on the phenyl ring in the central core, were synthesized by solution phase parallel synthesis based on a combinatorial approach. The mesomorphic behaviour and physical properties of all the new compounds were studied by means of optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray and circular dichroism spectroscopy. We found interesting transitional behaviour for the 4Br-P-n-O-PIMB homologous series. The homologues with alkyl tails having carbon numbers of n=3-10, 12, 14 exhibit rather complicated mesomorphic behaviour, which is strongly sensitive to n. The chiral fluid smectic B2 phase with SmCAPA structure and unidentified smectic Bx phase were observed in the homologues with n=9, 10, 12, 14 and n=3-5, respectively. Interestingly, every member exhibits frustrated and/or helical ordered phases at low temperatures, designated as X1, X2, and X3 phases, which result from a spontaneous escape from a macroscopic polarization. The mesomorphic behaviour and mesophase structures differ remarkably from those of the parent P-n-O-PIMB homologues, suggesting that substitution of the halogen atoms at the central core essentially creates a particular interaction between molecules.  相似文献

A homologous series of di(4-alkyloxybenzoates) of 4,4'-dimercaptobiphenyl: CH3(CH2)n-1O-C6H4-COS-C6H4-C6H4-SOC-C6H4-O(CH2)n-1CH3,n=1-7, has been synthesized and the thermotropic liquid-crystalline behaviour investigated. All compounds exhibit enantiotropic mesomorphism over a remarkable temperature range. While the mesophase thermal stability is moderately higher than that found for the corresponding oxygenated analogues, the smectic stability is definitely lower. In fact, all the compounds are nematic but smectic mesomorphism (SC) is observed for n = 7. Compounds with n = 6 or 7 exhibit enantiotropic highly ordered smectic (or disordered crystal) phases, probably SG in type.  相似文献

4-[(S)-2-Methylbutoxycarbonyl]phenyl 4-[(4-n-alkoxy-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl)ethynyl]benzoates have been prepared from the starting material 1-pentafluorophenyl-2-trimethylsilylacetylene. Polarizing microscope textural observation and DSC measurements of the phase transitions of these novel compounds showed that they were liquid crystals with chiral smectic C phase (S*C), smectic A(SA) and cholesteric (Ch) phases. The effects of the alkoxy chain length on the transition temperatures and enthalpies were also studied.  相似文献

Searching for compounds which could be useful as modifiers of smectic C mixtures, we have synthesized four homologous series of three ring dioxanes, 2BBD, 5BBD, 2CBD, and 5CBD. Their phase transition temperatures and enthalpies were measured and their liquid crystal phases identified. Compounds belonging to series n-BBD form smectic Bcr phases for shorter alkyl chains, and smectic Bcr and A phases, for longer chains. Compounds belonging to the n-CBD series exhibit the smectic A phase, but those with longer alkyl chains have exclusively smectic B phases and those with short tails have other low temperature, highly ordered smectic phases. The compounds were added to smectic C mixture and it was found that some can be useful as dopants. Compounds with longer alkyl tails in the molecule are more suitable for this purpose; the type of ring in the core is less important.  相似文献

A new series with a chiral tolane core has been synthesized. These materials belong to the optically active series: 3-fluoro-4-[(R) or (S)-1-methylheptyloxy]4'-(4'-alkyloxy-3'-fluorobenzoyloxy)tolanes (nFBTFO1M7). For the first time, the helical SA* phase or TGBA phase is found in all of the derivatives from heptyloxy to octadecyloxy. The SA-SA*-N* phase sequence is observed in several compounds with short chains and the SC*-SA-SA*-N* phase sequence is obtained with the decyloxy derivative. The TGBA phase has filament or cholesteric textures. The helical pitch of the TGBA phase is short for the octadecyloxy derivative and is compared with that for different chain lengths as a function of temperature. The layer spacing in the TGBA phase shows that it is incommensurate with the fully elongated molecular length.  相似文献

Several laterally connected twin mesogens incorporating rigid p-terphenyl units have been synthesized. Their liquid crystalline behaviour was investigated by polarizing microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. If one compares the twins with their respective halves, the mesophase stabilizing influence of the lateral fixation becomes evident. It obviously pre-organizes the calamitic units and therefore stabilizes smectic phases. The mesophase behaviour of these twins depends strongly on the length and the structure of the spacer. Short as well as highly polar and rigid spacer units give rise to smectic phases with high transition temperatures. By increasing the spacer length the mesophase stability is drastically diminished. Dimesogenic 4,4'-didecyloxyterphenyl derivatives containing spacers consisting of two connecting atoms exhibit smectic C phases exclusively. Elongation of the spacer to three connecting atoms gives an SA-Sc dimorphism, and in the case of compounds with longer spacers mostly the SA phase and in one case the nematic phase were found.  相似文献

The symmetrically difluorinated aryl-acetylene dimers, 1,4-bis[2-(3',3'-difluoro-4',4'-di-n-alkyloxyphenyl)ethynyl]benzenes (n = 7-12), were prepared by a one pot phase transfer. Pd(0)/Cu(I) catalysed, three step coupling of 1,4-diiodobenzene with 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol and the appropriate 1-bromo-3-fluoro-(4-n-alkyloxy)benzene. All members of the series display enantiotropic nematic and smectic C phases as well as an additional smectic mesophase in the sequence C-S-SC-N-I. The textures observed by polarized optical microscopy strongly support identification of the second smectic phase as a SE mesophase. The SC temperature window increases as the length of the n-alkyloxy substituent increases, whereas the stability of the nematic and SE temperature windows decrease. In these fluorinated dimers, destabilization of mesomorphic behaviour by lateral fluorine substitution is compensated by stabilization due to the large length to breadth ratio of the mesogen, such that melting and crystallization are depressed more than isotropization when compared to the non-fluorinated dimers.  相似文献

The thermal properties of 4-octyloxyphenyl 4-(4-R-3-nitrobenzoyloxy) benzo-ates (1) and 4-(4-octyloxybenzoyloxy)phenyl 4-R-3-nitrobenzoates (2) have been examined, where R = hydrogen, halogens, alkyl and alkoxy groups. The derivatives of compound 1 incorporating hydrogen, halogens, methoxy and nitro groups show a smectic A phase having a bilayer arrangement, and the others with a long alkoxy group show the SA phase with the monolayer arrangement. The derivatives of compound 2 incorporating halogens, and the nitro group show the SA phase with the monolayer arrangement. The alkoxy derivatives show a smectic C phase as well as the nematic phase. The nitro group at the lateral position tends to increase the ratio of the SA-N transition temperature to the N-I. The effect of the nitro group on the smectic properties has been discussed in terms of the structural and electrostatic nature of the nitro group.  相似文献

Binary mixtures in which one component is nCBB or its chiral analogue, and the second component is nCB, nOCB, n.CN, or one of their chiral analogues are studied by thermomicroscopy. The branched compounds induce the smectic Ad phase more strongly than unbranched compounds with the same alkyl chain length. The observed behaviour is discussed from the point of view of dimer formation. In all chiral systems, the TGBA phase appears.  相似文献

The synthesis and mesomorphic properties of a new series of liquid crystals derived from quinoline with an imine central bond is described. All compounds exhibit mesophase ranges greater than 50°C. The lower homologues (n = 4-6) show trimorphism Sc-Sa-N (for n = 4, the Sc phase is monotropic). The higher homologues (n = 7-10) show nematic and smectic C phases. Compared to the styrylquinoline analogues the imine bond gives rise to similar liquid crystal phase ranges but lower melting points.  相似文献

As part of our detailed comparative studies of groups of liquid-crystalline compounds that belong to a homologous series, we present phase-transition studies of the compounds N-(4-n-pentyloxybenzylidene)4'-n-pentylaniline (5O.5) and N-(4-n-nonyloxybenzylidene)4'-n-butylaniline (9O.4) using different experimental techniques. The compound 5O.5 is reported to exhibit a phase sequence N, SA, SC, SB and SG, while 90.4 shows the sequence SA, SF and SG. The salient features of our work on 5O.5 are (i) a new smectic F phase is found in place of the reported smectic B phase, which is confirmed by both miscibility and X-ray studies; (ii) the formation of smectic-C-like short-range order in the nematic phase well above the SA-N transition; and (iii) a large tilt-angle variation in the smectic C phase (0-23·5°C) in a small temperature range (4·1°C). The phase changes across the SA-I transition, and for the first time across SF-SA transition, are carried out by volumetric studies. The detailed inferences of these are also presented.  相似文献

The mesophase behaviour of the lanthanum(III) alkanoates [La(CxH2x+1COO)3] (x =3-19) has been investigated by hot-stage polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and high-temperature X-ray diffraction. Lanthanum(III) butyrate monohydrate shows no mesomorphism, whereas for the remaining short chain homologues (x = 4-9) a highly viscous mesophase M and a smectic A phase were observed. The longer chain lanthanum(III) soaps (x = 10-19) exhibit only a smectic A phase. However, the chain length has a pronounced effect on the transition temperatures. The thermal behaviour of lanthanum(III) alkanoates is compared with that of other lanthanide(III) alkanoates.  相似文献

X-ray measurements on hexakis(4-(4'-alkyloxy)biphenoxy)cyclotriphosphazenes [PN-(OC6H4C6H4OCnH2n + 1)2]3 (HACP, n = 7-9), confirm the previous mesophase identification. The apparent molecular length measured in the mesophase compares to twice the length of an alkyloxybiphenyl side group. Specific features are added to the usual features of the nematic and smectic diffraction patterns which show that the molecular arrays in directions parallel and perpendicular to the director both reflect the peculiar shape of the cyclotriphosphazenes.  相似文献
