The uniformly optimal graph problem with node failures consists of finding the most reliable graph in the class Ω(n,m) of all graphs with n nodes and m edges in which nodes fail independently and edges never fail. The graph G is called uniformly optimal in Ω(n,m) if, for all node-failure probabilities q∈(0,1), the graph G is the most reliable graph in the class of graphs Ω(n,m). This paper proves that the multipartite graphs K(b,b+1,…,b+1,b+2) are uniformly optimal in their classes Ω((k+2)(b+1),(k2+3k+2)(b+1)2/2−1), where k is the number of partite sets of size (b+1), while for i>2, the multipartite graphs K(b,b+1,…,b+1,b+i) are not uniformly optimal in their classes Ω((k+2)b+k+i,(k+2)(k+1)b2/2+(k+1)(k+i)b+k(k+2i−1)/2).  相似文献

Connectivity of iterated line graphs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Let k≥0 be an integer and Lk(G) be the kth iterated line graph of a graph G. Niepel and Knor proved that if G is a 4-connected graph, then κ(L2(G))≥4δ(G)−6. We show that the connectivity of G can be relaxed. In fact, we prove in this note that if G is an essentially 4-edge-connected and 3-connected graph, then κ(L2(G))≥4δ(G)−6. Similar bounds are obtained for essentially 4-edge-connected and 2-connected (1-connected) graphs.  相似文献

A known result obtained independently by Fan and Jung is that every 3-connected k-regular graph on n vertices contains a cycle of length at least min{3k,n}. This raises the question of how much can be said about the circumferences of 3-connected k-regular claw-free graphs. In this paper, we show that every 3-connected k-regular claw-free graph on n vertices contains a cycle of length at least min{6k-17,n}.  相似文献

Thomassen [Reflections on graph theory, J. Graph Theory 10 (1986) 309-324] conjectured that every 4-connected line graph is hamiltonian. An hourglass is a graph isomorphic to K5-E(C4), where C4 is a cycle of length 4 in K5. In Broersma et al. [On factors of 4-connected claw-free graphs, J. Graph Theory 37 (2001) 125-136], it is shown that every 4-connected line graph without an induced subgraph isomorphic to the hourglass is hamiltonian connected. In this note, we prove that every 3-connected, essentially 4-connected hourglass free line graph, is hamiltonian connected.  相似文献

A graph with n vertices is said to have a small cycle cover provided its edges can be covered with at most (2n ? 1)/3 cycles. Bondy [2] has conjectured that every 2-connected graph has a small cycle cover. In [3] Lai and Lai prove Bondy’s conjecture for plane triangulations. In [1] the author extends this result to all planar 3-connected graphs, by proving that they can be covered by at most (n + 1)/2 cycles. In this paper we show that Bondy’s conjecture holds for all planar 2-connected graphs. We also show that all planar 2-edge-connected graphs can be covered by at most (3n ? 3)/4 cycles and we show an infinite family of graphs for which this bound is attained.  相似文献

We study the existence of edges having few crossings with the other edges in drawings of the complete graph (more precisely, in simple topological complete graphs). A topological graphT=(V,E) is a graph drawn in the plane with vertices represented by distinct points and edges represented by Jordan curves connecting the corresponding pairs of points (vertices), passing through no other vertices, and having the property that any intersection point of two edges is either a common end-point or a point where the two edges properly cross. A topological graph is simple if any two edges meet in at most one common point.Let h=h(n) be the smallest integer such that every simple topological complete graph on n vertices contains an edge crossing at most h other edges. We show that Ω(n3/2)≤h(n)≤O(n2/log1/4n). We also show that the analogous function on other surfaces (torus, Klein bottle) grows as cn2.  相似文献

We consider 2-factors with a bounded number of components in the n-times iterated line graph Ln(G). We first give a characterization of graph G such that Ln(G) has a 2-factor containing at most k components, based on the existence of a certain type of subgraph in G. This generalizes the main result of [L. Xiong, Z. Liu, Hamiltonian iterated line graphs, Discrete Math. 256 (2002) 407-422]. We use this result to show that the minimum number of components of 2-factors in the iterated line graphs Ln(G) is stable under the closure operation on a claw-free graph G. This extends results in [Z. Ryjá?ek, On a closure concept in claw-free graphs, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 70 (1997) 217-224; Z. Ryjá?ek, A. Saito, R.H. Schelp, Closure, 2-factors and cycle coverings in claw-free graphs, J. Graph Theory 32 (1999) 109-117; L. Xiong, Z. Ryjá?ek, H.J. Some known results on claw-free graphs are generalized to the larger class of almost claw-free graphs. In this paper, we prove several properties on longest cycles in almost claw-free graphs. In particular, we show the following two results.? (1) Every 2-connected almost claw-free graph on n vertices contains a cycle of length at least min {n, 2δ+4} and the bound 2δ+ 4 is best possible, thereby fully generalizing a result of Matthews and Sumner.? (2) Every 3-connected almost claw-free graph on n vertices contains a cycle of length at least min {n, 4δ}, thereby fully generalizing a result of MingChu Li. An even factor of a graph is a spanning subgraph of G in which all degrees are even, positive integers. In this paper, we characterize the claw-free graphs having even factors and then prove that the n-iterated line graph Ln(G) of G has an even factor if and only if every end branch of G has length at most n and every odd branch-bond of G has a branch of length at most n+1.  相似文献

We introduce a new class of graphs which we call P 3-dominated graphs. This class properly contains all quasi-claw-free graphs, and hence all claw-free graphs. Let G be a 2-connected P 3-dominated graph. We prove that G is hamiltonian if α(G 2) ≤ κ(G), with two exceptions: K 2,3 and K 1,1,3. We also prove that G is hamiltonian, if G is 3-connected and |V(G)| ≤ 5δ(G) − 5. These results extend known results on (quasi-)claw-free graphs. Recently, Jackson and Yoshimoto proved that every bridgeless simple graph G with δ(G)≥3 has an even factor in which every component has order at least four, which strengthens a classical result of Petersen. In this paper, we give a strengthening of the above result and show that the above graphs have an even factor in which every component has order at least four that does not contain any given edge. We also extend the above result to the graphs with minimum degree at least three such that all bridges lie in a common path and to the bridgeless graphs that have at most two vertices of degree two respectively. Finally we use this extended result to show that every simple claw-free graph G of order n with δ(G)≥3 has an even factor with at most components. The upper bound is best possible.  相似文献

Let G be a minimally k-connected graph with n nodes and m edges. Mader proved that if n?3k-2 then m?k(n-k), and for n?3k-1 an equality is possible if, and only if, G is the complete bipartite graph Kk,n-k. Cai proved that if n?3k-2 then m?⌊(n+k)2/8⌋, and listed the cases when this bound is tight. In this paper we prove a more general theorem, which implies similar results for minimally k-outconnected graphs; a graph is called k-outconnected from r if it contains k internally disjoint paths from r to every other node.  相似文献

We present a new representation of a chordal graph called the clique-separator graph, whose nodes are the maximal cliques and minimal vertex separators of the graph. We present structural properties of the clique-separator graph and additional properties when the chordal graph is an interval graph, proper interval graph, or split graph. We also characterize proper interval graphs and split graphs in terms of the clique-separator graph. We present an algorithm that constructs the clique-separator graph of a chordal graph in O(n3) time and of an interval graph in O(n2) time, where n is the number of vertices in the graph.  相似文献

Let G be a connected claw-free graph on n vertices. Let ς3(G) be the minimum degree sum among triples of independent vertices in G. It is proved that if ς3(G) ≥ n − 3 then G is traceable or else G is one of graphs Gn each of which comprises three disjoint nontrivial complete graphs joined together by three additional edges which induce a triangle K3. Moreover, it is shown that for any integer k ≥ 4 there exists a positive integer ν(k) such that if ς3(G) ≥ nk, n > ν(k) and G is non-traceable, then G is a factor of a graph Gn. Consequently, the problem HAMILTONIAN PATH restricted to claw-free graphs G = (V, E) (which is known to be NP-complete) has linear time complexity O(|E|) provided that ς3(G) ≥ . This contrasts sharply with known results on NP-completeness among dense graphs. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Graph Theory 27: 75–86, 1998  相似文献

An edge e of a k-connected graph G is said to be a removable edge if G?e is still k-connected. A k-connected graph G is said to be a quasi (k+1)-connected if G has no nontrivial k-separator. The existence of removable edges of 3-connected and 4-connected graphs and some properties of quasi k-connected graphs have been investigated [D.A. Holton, B. Jackson, A. Saito, N.C. Wormale, Removable edges in 3-connected graphs, J. Graph Theory 14(4) (1990) 465-473; H. Jiang, J. Su, Minimum degree of minimally quasi (k+1)-connected graphs, J. Math. Study 35 (2002) 187-193; T. Politof, A. Satyanarayana, Minors of quasi 4-connected graphs, Discrete Math. 126 (1994) 245-256; T. Politof, A. Satyanarayana, The structure of quasi 4-connected graphs, Discrete Math. 161 (1996) 217-228; J. Su, The number of removable edges in 3-connected graphs, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 75(1) (1999) 74-87; J. Yin, Removable edges and constructions of 4-connected graphs, J. Systems Sci. Math. Sci. 19(4) (1999) 434-438]. In this paper, we first investigate the relation between quasi connectivity and removable edges. Based on the relation, the existence of removable edges in k-connected graphs (k?5) is investigated. It is proved that a 5-connected graph has no removable edge if and only if it is isomorphic to K6. For a k-connected graph G such that end vertices of any edge of G have at most k-3 common adjacent vertices, it is also proved that G has a removable edge. Consequently, a recursive construction method of 5-connected graphs is established, that is, any 5-connected graph can be obtained from K6 by a number of θ+-operations. We conjecture that, if k is even, a k-connected graph G without removable edge is isomorphic to either Kk+1 or the graph Hk/2+1 obtained from Kk+2 by removing k/2+1 disjoint edges, and, if k is odd, G is isomorphic to Kk+1.  相似文献

Tutte introduced the theory of nowhere zero flows and showed that a plane graph G has a face k-coloring if and only if G has a nowhere zero A-flow, for any Abelian group A with |A|≥k. In 1992, Jaeger et al. [9] extended nowhere zero flows to group connectivity of graphs: given an orientation D of a graph G, if for any b:V(G)?A with ∑vV(G)b(v)=0, there always exists a map f:E(G)?A−{0}, such that at each vV(G), in A, then G is A-connected. Let Z3 denote the cyclic group of order 3. In [9], Jaeger et al. (1992) conjectured that every 5-edge-connected graph is Z3-connected. In this paper, we proved the following.
  • (i)
Every 5-edge-connected graph is Z3-connected if and only if every 5-edge-connected line graph is Z3-connected.
  • (ii)
Every 6-edge-connected triangular line graph is Z3-connected.
  • (iii)
    Every 7-edge-connected triangular claw-free graph is Z3-connected.
In particular, every 6-edge-connected triangular line graph and every 7-edge-connected triangular claw-free graph have a nowhere zero 3-flow.  相似文献

An even cycle decomposition of a graph is a partition of its edges into cycles of even length. In 2012, Markström conjectured that the line graph of every 2-connected cubic graph has an even cycle decomposition and proved this conjecture for cubic graphs with oddness at most 2. However, for 2-connected cubic graphs with oddness 2, Markström only considered these graphs with a chordless 2-factor. (A chordless 2-factor of a graph is a 2-factor consisting of only induced cycles.) In this paper, we first construct an infinite family of 2-connected cubic graphs with oddness 2 and without chordless 2-factors. We then give a complete proof of Markström’s result and further prove this conjecture for cubic graphs with oddness 4.  相似文献

The backup 2-median problem is a location problem to locate two facilities at vertices with the minimum expected cost where each facility may fail with a given probability. Once a facility fails, the other one takes full responsibility for the services. Here we assume that the facilities do not fail simultaneously. In this paper, we consider the backup 2-median problem on block graphs where any two edges in one block have the same length and the lengths of edges on different blocks may be different. By constructing a tree-shaped skeleton of a block graph, we devise an O(n log n q- m)-time algorithm to solve this problem where n and m are the number of vertices and edges, respectively, in the given block graph.  相似文献

An edge e of a 3-connected graph G is said to be removable if G - e is a subdivision of a 3-connected graph. If e is not removable, then e is said to be nonremovable. In this paper, we study the distribution of removable edges in 3-connected graphs and prove that a 3-connected graph of order n ≥ 5 has at most [(4 n — 5)/3] nonremovable edges.  相似文献
