The viscoelastic properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/grafted poly(butyl acrylate) (PBA) nanoparticle systems were investigated. The rubber particles consist of PBA core (60 nm in diameter) and grafted PMMA shell. The grafting degree, defined as the weight ratio of grafted PMMA to PBA particles, ranges from 0.8 to 1.5. Two series of samples, A series with 7.5 wt.% of PBA content and B series with 12 wt.% of PBA content, were used. The systems exhibited fast and slow relaxation process, the former reflecting the relaxation of the matrix PMMA chains and the latter being attributed to grafted PBA particles. For A series samples, time-temperature superposition (TTS) was held well over the frequency (ω) and temperature (T) ranges measured. However, for B series samples, TTS was not satisfied at low ω due to the particle-particle interaction of grafted PBA particles, although the samples obeyed TTS at high ω associated with the relaxation with entanglement of matrix PMMA. At high T and low ω region, the B series samples showed a sol-gel transition at elevating T and the critical gel behavior characterized with a power-law relationship, G′ = G″/tan(nπ/2) ∝ ωn, was observed. This behavior suggested formation of a self-similar, fractal structure of grafted PBA particles. The critical gel temperature (T gel) and the critical exponent (n) were determined for the B series samples. TEM observations revealed that as-prepared A and B samples had well-dispersed particles but the B samples after viscoelastic measurements had fragmented networks of the PBA particles, confirming that the sol-gel transition occurred for the PMMA/grafted PBA systems at elevating T.  相似文献

We study the influence of confinement on the rheology and structure of nematic liquid crystals (NLCs). NLCs get confined in networks of titania (TiO2, primary particle size = 21 nm) nanoparticles in suspensions of TiO2 and NLC, N-(4-methoxybenzylidene)-4-butylaniline (MBBA). Suspensions with TiO2 nanoparticle volume fraction (?) of 0.006–0.017, form viscoelastic solids with low elastic modulus (G′) of 101 Pa–102 Pa and short relaxation times. Increase in TiO2 nanoparticle ? leads to a rise in G′ with TiO2 nanoparticles forming a percolating network at a critical volume fraction (? c) = 0.023, and G′ of ~103 Pa. TiO2/MBBA NLC suspensions at and above ? c = 0.023 show G′ ~ ω x?1 scaling, where ω is the angular frequency and the minimum in loss modulus (G′′) with ω. The effective noise temperature, x decreases and approaches 1 with the increase in the TiO2 nanoparticle ? from 0.023–0.035, is indicative of an increase in the glassy dynamics. Through the polarized light microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry experiments, we propose that the progressive addition of TiO2 nanoparticles introduces a quenched random disorder (QRD) in the NLC medium which disturbs the nematic order. This results in metastable TiO2/MBBA NLC suspensions in which NLC domains get confined in the network of flocs of TiO2 nanoparticles. We also show that the salient rheological signatures of soft glassy rheology develop only in the presence of NLC MBBA and are absent in the isotropic phase of MBBA.  相似文献

We prove a principle of linearized stability for semiflows generated by neutral functional differential equations of the form x′(t) = g(? x t , x t ). The state space is a closed subset in a manifold of C 2-functions. Applications include equations with state-dependent delay, as for example x′(t) = a x′(t + d(x(t))) + f (x(t + r(x(t)))) with \({a\in\mathbb{R}, d:\mathbb{R}\to(-h,0), f:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}, r:\mathbb{R}\to[-h,0]}\).  相似文献

For a composite of poly(lactic acid) containing graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) at a low concentration (0.34 vol%), this study examined growths of mechanical and electrical properties under an alternating current (AC) electric field, focusing on field-induced GNP structures governing those properties. The composite was subjected to the AC field (60 Hz) of various intensities E for various times t E at 190 °C. A fraction of randomly oriented GNPs was aligned by the field and then connected into columns, as suggested from optical microscopy. This structural evolution led to qualitatively similar growths of low-frequency storage modulus and static electrical conductivity. The key quantity for understanding this growth was a time t E* for occurrence of short circuit that detected formation of GNP columns conductively bridging the electrodes. The growths of both modulus and conductivity for various E were summarized as functions of a reduced variable, t E/t E*, confirming the growths commonly reflected the evolution of the GNP columns. However, the modulus grew fast and leveled off by t E/t E* ~ 1, whereas the conductivity kept growing gradually even at t E/t E* > 1. This difference was discussed in relation to the matrix chains and leftover GNPs out the column.  相似文献

Mechanical properties of a hard and stiff W-C coating on steel substrate have been investigated using nanoindentation combined with finite element modeling (FEM) and extended FEM (XFEM). The significant pile-up observed around the indents in steel substrate caused an overestimation of hardness and indentation modulus. A simple geometrical model, considering the additional contact surfaces due to pile-up, has been proposed to reduce this overestimation. The presence of W-C coating suppressed the pile-up in the steel substrate and a transition to sink-in behavior occurred. The FEM simulations adequately reproduced the surface topography of the indents in the substrate and coating/substrate systems as well. The maximum principal stresses of the indented W-C/steel coated system were tensile; they were always located in the coating and evolved in 3 stages. Cohesive cracking occurred during loading in the sink-in zone (stage III) when the ultimate tensile strength (σ max ) of the coating was reached. The obtained hardness (H c ), indentation modulus (E c ), yield stress (Y) and strength (σ max ) of the W-C coating were H c ? =?20 GPa, E c ? =?250 GPa, Y?=?9.0 GPa and σ max ? =?9.35 GPa, respectively. XFEM resulted in fracture energy of the W-C coating of G?=?38.1 J?·?m-2 and fracture toughness of K IC ? =?3.5 MPa?·?m0.5.  相似文献

Any classical solution of the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equation is global in time. However, it remains an outstanding open problem whether classical solutions of the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation preserve their regularity for all time. This paper studies solutions of a family of active scalar equations in which each component u j of the velocity field u is determined by the scalar θ through \({u_j =\mathcal{R}\Lambda^{-1}P(\Lambda) \theta}\) , where \({\mathcal{R}}\) is a Riesz transform and Λ = (?Δ)1/2. The two-dimensional Euler vorticity equation corresponds to the special case P(Λ) = I while the SQG equation corresponds to the case P(Λ) = Λ. We develop tools to bound \({\|\nabla u||_{L^\infty}}\) for a general class of operators P and establish the global regularity for the Loglog-Euler equation for which P(Λ) = (log(I + log(I ? Δ))) γ with 0 ≦ γ ≦ 1. In addition, a regularity criterion for the model corresponding to P(Λ) = Λ β with 0 ≦ β ≦ 1 is also obtained.  相似文献

Rheological measurements were performed to examine the yielding behavior of capillary suspensions prepared by mixing cocoa powder as dispersed phase, vegetable oil as the continuous primary fluid, and water as the secondary fluid. Here, we investigated the yielding behavior of solid-fluid-fluid systems with varying particle volume fraction, ?, spanning the regime from a low volume fraction (? = 0.25) to a highly filled regime (? = 0.65) using dynamic oscillatory measurements. While for ? ≤ 0.4 with a fixed water volume fraction (? w ) of 0.06 as the secondary fluid, capillary suspensions exhibited a single yield point due to rupturing of aqueous capillary bridges between the particles, while capillary suspensions with ? ≥ 0.45 showed a two-step yielding behavior. On plotting elastic stress (G γ) as a function of applied strain (γ), two distinct peaks, indicating two yield stresses, were observed. Both the yield stresses and storage modulus at low strains were found to increase with ? following a power law dependence. With increasing ? w (0 – 0.08) at a fixed ? = 0.65, the system shifted to a frustrated, jammed state with particles strongly held together shown by rapidly increasing first and second yield stresses. In particular, the first yield stress was found to increase with ? w following a power law dependence, while the second yield stress was found to increase exponentially with ? w . Transient steady shear tests were also performed. The single stress overshoot for ? ≤ 0.4 with ? w = 0.06 reflected one-step yielding behavior. In contrast, for high ? (≥ 0.45) values with ? w = 0.06, two stress overshoots were observed in agreement with the two-step yielding behavior shown in the dynamic oscillatory measurements. Experiments on the effect of resting time on microstructure recovery demonstrated that aggregates could reform after resting under quiescent conditions.  相似文献

The influences of fuel Lewis number Le F on localised forced ignition of inhomogeneous mixtures are analysed using three-dimensional compressible Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of turbulent mixing layers for Le F  = 0.8, 1.0 and 1.2 and a range of different root-mean-square turbulent velocity fluctuation u′ values. For all Le F cases a tribrachial flame has been observed in case of successful ignition. However, the lean premixed branch tends to merge with the diffusion flame on the stoichiometric mixture fraction isosurface at later stages of the flame evolution. It has been observed that the maximum values of temperature and reaction rate increase with decreasing Le F during the period of external energy addition. Moreover, Le F is found to have a significant effect on the behaviours of mean temperature and fuel reaction rate magnitude conditional on mixture fraction values. It is also found that reaction rate and mixture fraction gradient magnitude \(\vert \nabla \xi \vert \) are negatively correlated at the most reactive region for all values of Le F explored. The probability of finding high values of \(\vert \nabla \xi \vert \) increases with increasing Le F . For a given value of u′, the extent of burning decreases with increasing Le F . A moderate increase in u′ gives rise to an increase in the extent of burning for Le F  = 0.8 and 1.0, which starts to decrease with further increases in u′. For Le F  = 1.2, the extent of burning decreases monotonically with increasing u′. The extent of edge flame propagation on the stoichiometric mixture fraction ξ = ξ st isosurface is characterised by the probability of finding burned gas on this isosurface, which decreases with increasing u′ and Le F . It has been found that it is easier to obtain self-sustained combustion following localised forced ignition in case of inhomogeneous mixtures than that in the case of homogeneous mixtures with the same energy input, energy deposition duration when the ignition centre is placed at the stoichiometric mixture. The difficultly to sustain combustion unaided by external energy addition in homogeneous mixture is particularly prevalent in the case of Le F  = 1.2.  相似文献

Zeins, storage proteins from maize, are suitable for making biobased thermoplastic materials. The rheological behavior of a commercial zein plasticized with 20 w% glycerol was studied in the molten state by steady-state flow experiments in extrusion conditions and oscillatory rheometry. For low residence times, a shear-thinning viscoelastic behavior was observed, with G″ exceeding G′. After 300 s at 130 °C, the complex viscosity |η ?|?=?7?×?103 ω ?0.46 was found to be similar to that of thermoplastic polymer melts used in fused deposition modeling. However, the ratio between the exponents of the power laws describing G′(ω) and G″(ω) did not meet the typical value of 2 for entangled polymer melts. Moreover, for longer residence times, the viscosity increased and a gelation phenomenon was observed with a crossing over of G′(ω) and G″(ω). Gel times ranged from 6000 s at 120 °C to 1700 s at 150 °C. The evolution of the macromolecular structure assessed by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and high-performance size exclusion chromatography suggested that this gelation phenomenon involves various types of covalent and non-covalent cross-links. Disulfide bonds played a significant role in gelation kinetics despite a very low cysteine residue content in the protein primary structure (about 1 mol%). These results suggested that plasticized zeins initially behave like a low-viscosity non-entangled polymer melt, before cross-linking progressively led to a continuous network.  相似文献

For the system
$-\Delta U_i+ U_i=U_i^3-\beta U_i\sum_{j\neq i}U_j^2,\quad i=1,\dots,k,$
(with k ≧ 3), we prove the existence for β large of positive radial solutions on \({\mathbb R^N}\) . We show that as β →  + ∞, the profile of each component U i separates, in many pulses, from the others. Moreover, we can prescribe the location of such pulses in terms of the oscillations of the changing-sign solutions of the scalar equation  ? ΔW  +  W  =  W3. Within an Hartree–Fock approximation, this provides a theoretical indication of phase separation into many nodal domains for the k-mixtures of Bose–Einstein condensates.

In the slow flows of a strongly and nonuniformly heated gas, in the continuum regime (Kn → 0) thermal stresses may be present. The theory of slow nonisothermal continuum gas flows with account for thermal stresses was developed in 1969–1974. The action of the thermal stresses on the gas results in certain paradoxical effects, including the reversal of the direction of the force exerted on a spherical particle in Stokes flow. The propulsion force effect is manifested at large but finite temperature differences between the particle and the gas. This study is devoted to the thermal-stress effect on the drag of a strongly heated spherical particle traveling slowly in a gas for small Knudsen numbers (M ~ Kn → 0), small but finite Reynolds numbers (Re ≤ 1), a linear temperature dependence of the transport coefficients µ ∝ T, and large but finite temperature differences ((T w ? T )/T M8 ~ 1). Two different systems of equations are solved numerically: the simplified Navier-Stokes equations and the modified Navier-Stokes equations with account for the thermal stresses.  相似文献

It has been long observed that cumbersome parameters are required for the traditional viscoelastic models to describe complex rheological behaviors. Inspired by the relationship between normal and anomalous diffusions, this paper tentatively employs t α to replace t, called as the scaling transformation, in the traditional creep compliance and relaxation modulus. With this methodology, the relaxation modulus is found to agree with the well-known Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts (KWW) stretched exponential function. The fitting results confirm that the proposed models accurately characterize rheological behaviors only with one more parameter α. Moreover, it is noted that the present formulations are directly related to the fractal derivative viscoelastic models and the index α is actually the order of the fractal derivative.  相似文献

The development of the thermo-viscous fingering instability of miscible displacements in homogeneous porous media is examined. In this first part of the study dealing with stability analysis, the basic equations and the parameters governing the problem in a rectilinear geometry are developed. An exponential dependence of viscosity on temperature and concentration is represented by two parameters, thermal mobility ratio β T and a solutal mobility ratio β C , respectively. Other parameters involved are the Lewis number Le and a thermal-lag coefficient λ. The governing equations are linearized and solved to obtain instability characteristics using either a quasi-steady-state approximation (QSSA) or initial value calculations (IVC). Exact analytical solutions are also obtained for very weakly diffusing systems. Using the QSSA approach, it was found that an increase in thermal mobility ratio β T is seen to enhance the instability for fixed β C , Le and λ. For fixed β C and β T , a decrease in the thermal-lag coefficient and/or an increase in the Lewis number always decrease the instability. Moreover, strong thermal diffusion at large Le as well as enhanced redistribution of heat between the solid and fluid phases at small λ is seen to alleviate the destabilizing effects of positive β T . Consequently, the instability gets strictly dominated by the solutal front. The linear stability analysis using IVC approach leads to conclusions similar to the QSSA approach except for the case of large Le and unity λ flow where the instability is seen to get even less pronounced than in the case of a reference isothermal flow of the same β C , but β T  = 0. At practically, small value of λ, however, the instability ultimately approaches that due to β C only.  相似文献

We focus here on the analysis of the regularity or singularity of solutions Ω 0 to shape optimization problems among convex planar sets, namely:
$J(\Omega_{0})={\rm min} \{J(\Omega), \Omega \quad {\rm convex},\Omega \in \mathcal{S}_{\rm ad}\},$
where \({\mathcal{S}_{\rm ad}}\) is a set of 2-dimensional admissible shapes and \({J:\mathcal{S}_{\rm ad}\rightarrow\mathbb{R}}\) is a shape functional. Our main goal is to obtain qualitative properties of these optimal shapes by using first and second order optimality conditions, including the infinite dimensional Lagrange multiplier due to the convexity constraint. We prove two types of results:
  1. i)
    under a suitable convexity property of the functional J, we prove that Ω 0 is a W 2,p -set, \({p\in[1, \infty]}\). This result applies, for instance, with p = ∞ when the shape functional can be written as J(Ω) = R(Ω) + P(Ω), where R(Ω) = F(|Ω|, E f (Ω), λ1(Ω)) involves the area |Ω|, the Dirichlet energy E f (Ω) or the first eigenvalue of the Laplace–Dirichlet operator λ1(Ω), and P(Ω) is the perimeter of Ω;

  1. ii)
under a suitable concavity assumption on the functional J, we prove that Ω 0 is a polygon. This result applies, for instance, when the functional is now written as J(Ω) = R(Ω) ? P(Ω), with the same notations as above.

In view of its high precision and high efficiency, three-dimensional digital image correlation (3D-DIC) is widely used to accurately measure full-field deformation. A spatiotemporal experimental study using 3D-DIC to explore the Portevin–Le Chatelier (PLC) deformational behavior, provides a new insight into the whole 3D deformation field, including the out-of-plane displacement, and in particular the relationship between the serrations and the strain field in the deformation bands corresponding to individual serrations. Specimens 1, 2 and 3 mm thick of 5456 Al-based alloy were tested in uniaxial tension at room temperature at strain rates from 1.8 × 10?4 to 9.1 × 10?3s?1. The spatial and temporal characteristics of the strain localization were quantitatively analyzed. The out-of-plane displacement increment field (w) of the localized bands was observed by 3D-DIC, and found to be related to the specimen thickness and the in-plane strain increment. The largest displacement increments were respectively 15, 10 and 5 μm for 3, 2 and 1 mm specimens at maximum strain increment of about 12000 με. The elastic shrinkage outside the deformation bands was found to be an essential characteristic of the PLC effect. The width of the PLC band (wband) increased with increasing thickness; the angle of the PLC band (??band) was not affected by either specimen thickness or serration amplitude. Temporally, the serrations in the plots both of in-plane strain and out-of-plane displacement vs. time coincided throughout the entire loading procedure. When PLC banding occurred, the serration amplitude within the bands was found to be proportional to the maximum strain increment in the direction of the applied tensile force (??max).  相似文献

Impact of wall slip on the yield stress measurement is examined for capillary suspensions consisting of cocoa powder as the dispersed phase, vegetable oil as the continuous primary fluid, and water as the secondary fluid using smooth and serrated parallel plates. Using dynamic oscillatory measurements, we investigated the yielding behavior of this ternary solid-fluid-fluid system with varying particle volume fraction, ?, from 0.45 to 0.65 and varying water volume fraction, ?w, from 0.02 to 0.08. Yield stress is defined as the maximum in the elastic stress (Gγ), which is obtained by plotting the product of elastic modulus (G) and strain amplitude (γ) as a function of applied strain amplitude. With serrated plates, which offer minimal slippage, capillary suspensions with ? ≥?0.45 and a fixed ?w =?0.06 showed a two-step yielding behavior as indicated by two peaks in the plots of elastic stress as a function of strain amplitude. On the other hand with smooth plates, the capillary suspensions showed strong evidence of wall slip as evident by the presence of three distinct peaks and lowered first yield stresses for all ? and ?w. These results can be interpreted based on the fact that a particle-depleted layer, which is known to be responsible for slip, is present in the vicinity of the smooth surfaces. The slip layer presents itself as an additional “pseudo-microstructure” (characteristic length scale) besides the two microstructures, aqueous bridges and solid particle agglomerates, that may occur in the system. With serrated plates, both the yield stresses (σ1σ2) and storage moduli plateau at lower strain (before the first yield point) and at higher strain (before the second yield point) (G\(^{\prime }_{p1}\), G\(^{\prime }_{p2}\)) were found to increase with ? (at a fixed ?w =?0.06) following power-law dependences. Similarly with increasing ?w (0.02 – 0.08) at a fixed ? =?0.62, the system behaved as a solid-like material in a jammed state with particles strongly held together as manifested by rapidly increasing σ1 and σ2. The usage of smooth surfaces primarily affected σ1 which was reflected by an approximately 70–90% decrement in the measured σ1 for all values of ?. By contrast, σ2 and G\(^{\prime }_{p2}\) were found to be unaffected as shown by close agreement of values obtained using serrated geometry due to vanishing slip layers at higher strain amplitudes.  相似文献

The y-nonlocal Davey–Stewartson II equation is an extension of the usual DS II equation involving a partially parity-time-symmetric potential only with respect to the spatial variable y. By using the Hirota bilinear method, families of n-order rational solutions are obtained, which include lumps in the (xy)-plane and the (yt)-plane, growing-and-decaying line waves in the (xt)-plane, and hybrid solutions of interacting line rogue waves and lumps in the (xy)-plane.  相似文献

The effect of heterogeneous catalysis on the heat transfer to cold and heated surfaces in subsonic dissociated carbon dioxide jet flows is studied experimentally, using a 100 kW inductive plasma generator, and simulated numerically. The effective probabilities of the heterogeneous reactions CO + O → CO2 and O + O → O2 on molybdenum (Tw=300 K) and quartz (Tw=470–620 K) surfaces, the Buran heat shield tile coating (Tw = 1470—1670 K), and two oxidation-resistant carbon-carbon coating materials (Tw=1420—1840 K) are determined by comparing the experimental and calculated data on the heat fluxes at the stagnation point of models at a pressure of 0.1 atm.  相似文献

We study turbulent plane Couette-Poiseuille (CP) flows in which the conditions (relative wall velocity ΔU w ≡ 2U w , pressure gradient dP/dx and viscosity ν) are adjusted to produce zero mean skin friction on one of the walls, denoted by APG for adverse pressure gradient. The other wall, FPG for favorable pressure gradient, provides the friction velocity u τ , and h is the half-height of the channel. This leads to a one-parameter family of one-dimensional flows of varying Reynolds number Re ≡ U w h/ν. We apply three codes, and cover three Reynolds numbers stepping by a factor of two each time. The agreement between codes is very good, and the Reynolds-number range is sizable. The theoretical questions revolve around Reynolds-number independence in both the core region (free of local viscous effects) and the two wall regions. The core region follows Townsend’s hypothesis of universal behavior for the velocity and shear stress, when they are normalized with u τ and h; on the other hand universality is not observed for all the Reynolds stresses, any more than it is in Poiseuille flow or boundary layers. The FPG wall region obeys the classical law of the wall, again for velocity and shear stress. For the APG wall region, Stratford conjectured universal behavior when normalized with the pressure gradient, leading to a square-root law for the velocity. The literature, also covering other flows with zero skin friction, is ambiguous. Our results are very consistent with both of Stratford’s conjectures, suggesting that at least in this idealized flow turbulence theory is successful like it was for the classical logarithmic law of the wall. We appear to know the constants of the law within a 10% bracket. On the other hand, that again does not extend to Reynolds stresses other than the shear stress, but these stresses are passive in the momentum equation.  相似文献

In this work, the linear viscoelastic behavior of some low-density polyethylene in the melt is used to obtain their architecture. In this way, the number of branches per molecule and long chain branching (LCB) content is determined. For this purpose, a method based on the molecular dynamics of simple star-shaped molecules is presented. It allows one to infer the topology of an average molecule through a set of 2N c parameters {C n i , the number concentration of a level i} and {M bi , the mass of a segment of level i} representing an irregular Cayley tree with N c levels. The inverse problem uses the complex shear modulus as a function of the frequency data along with a minimization algorithm. Results from the present method are compared with NMR and SEC measurements of the level of branching. It appears that SEC and rheology leads to similar results on the determination of LCB while NMR overestimate the number of branch points per molecule. Moreover, rheology allows one to go further than the basic evaluation of LCB content and shows a picture of the structure of the molecules that is in agreement with the kinetics of free radical polymerization of polyethylene.  相似文献
