We observe a simple formula to compute the number of Hall -subgroups of a -separable finite group in terms of only the action of a fixed Hall -subgroup of on a set of normal -sections of . As a consequence, we obtain that divides whenever is a subgroup of a finite -separable group . This generalizes a recent result of Navarro. In addition, our method gives an alternative proof of Navarro's result.

Let be a complete metric space without isolated points, and let be a continuous map. In this paper we prove that if is transitive and has a periodic point of period , then has a scrambled set consisting of transitive points such that each is a synchronously proximal Cantor set, and is dense in . Furthermore, if is sensitive (for example, if is chaotic in the sense of Devaney), with being a sensitivity constant, then this is an -scrambled set.

Given a connected linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, we construct a pure Picard-Vessiot extension for , namely, a Picard-Vessiot extension , with differential Galois group , such that and are purely differentially transcendental over . The differential field is the quotient field of a -stable proper differential subring with the property that if is any differential field with field of constants and is a Picard-Vessiot extension with differential Galois group a connected subgroup of , then there is a differential homomorphism such that is generated over as a differential field by .

Let be the affine plane over a field of characteristic . Birational morphisms of are mappings given by polynomial mappings of the polynomial algebra such that for the quotient fields, one has . Polynomial automorphisms are obvious examples of such mappings. Another obvious example is the mapping given by . For a while, it was an open question whether every birational morphism is a product of polynomial automorphisms and copies of . This question was answered in the negative by P. Russell (in an informal communication). In this paper, we give a simple combinatorial solution of the same problem. More importantly, our method yields an algorithm for deciding whether a given birational morphism can be factored that way.

Using the classification of finite simple groups we prove the following statement: Let 3$"> be a prime, a group of automorphisms of -power order of a finite group , and a -invariant Sylow -subgroup of . If is trivial, then is solvable. An equivalent formulation is that if has a self-normalizing Sylow -subgroup with 3$"> a prime, then is solvable. We also investigate the possibilities when .

Let be a knot in a closed orientable irreducible 3-manifold . Suppose admits a genus 1 Heegaard splitting and we denote by the splitting torus. We say is a -genus -bridge splitting of if intersects transversely in two points, and divides into two pairs of a solid torus and a boundary parallel arc in it. It is known that a -genus -bridge splitting of a satellite knot admits a satellite diagram disjoint from an essential loop on the splitting torus. If and the slope of the loop is longitudinal in one of the solid tori, then is obtained by twisting a component of a -bridge link along the other component. We give a criterion for determining whether a given -genus -bridge splitting of a knot admits a satellite diagram of a given slope or not. As an application, we show there exist counter examples for a conjecture of Ait Nouh and Yasuhara.

Factor analysis, a popular method for interpreting multivariate data, models the covariance among variables as being due to a small number (, ) of hidden variables. A factor analysis of can be thought of as an ordered or unordered collection, , of linearly independent lines in . Let be the collection of data sets for which is defined. The ``singularities' of are those data sets, , in the closure, , at which the limit, , does not exist. is unstable near its singularities.

The aim of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, we show that the kernel of the Bousfield periodization functor is cellularly generated by a space , i.e., we construct a space such that the smallest closed class containing is exactly . On the other hand, we show that the partial order is a complete lattice, where if . Finally, as a corollary we obtain Bousfield's theorem, which states that )$"> is a complete lattice, where A$"> if .

We consider tensors on the unit sphere , where , is the standard metric and is a differentiable function on . For such tensors, we consider the problems of existence of a Riemannian metric , conformal to , such that , and the existence of such a metric that satisfies , where is the scalar curvature of . We find the restrictions on the Ricci candidate for solvability, and we construct the solutions when they exist. We show that these metrics are unique up to homothety, and we characterize those defined on the whole sphere. As a consequence of these results, we determine the tensors that are rotationally symmetric. Moreover, we obtain the well-known result that a tensor , 0 $">, has no solution on if and only metrics homothetic to admit as a Ricci tensor. We also show that if , then equation has no solution , conformal to on , and only metrics homothetic to are solutions to this equation when . Infinitely many solutions, globally defined on , are obtained for the equation
where . The geometric interpretation of these solutions is given in terms of existence of complete metrics, globally defined on and conformal to the Euclidean metric, for certain bounded scalar curvature functions that vanish at infinity.

We consider weak convergence of empirical measures generated by stationary random process perturbed by deterministic noise . We assume that the noise has asymptotic distribution. In particular, we demonstrate that if the process is ergodic, or satisfies some mixing assumptions, then the influence of deterministic noise on is the same as it would be if were stochastic. Such results are of importance when investigating fluctuations and convex rearrangements of stochastic processes.
