A poly(2-(2-bromopropionyloxy)ethyl methacrylate) (PBPEM) was used as macroinitiator in the synthesis of molecular brushes with poly(4-vinylpyridine) side chains, (P(BPEM-g-4VP). Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was employed as the polymerization technique. The polymerizations were carried out in DMF at 30 °C using a copper-chloride-based ATRP catalyst, which converted all the dormant polymer chain ends to alkyl chloride groups, thus minimizing branching and crosslinking, which occurred when a copper bromide-based catalyst was employed. Tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine was selected as the ligand due to the high activity of its CuI complex in ATRP as well as its strong binding to both CuI and CuII, which prevented competitive complexation of the monomer or polymer to the metal center. In order to prevent crosslinking via radical coupling, the monomer conversion was kept low (under 3%) and the alkyl chloride end groups of P4VP side chains were converted to alkoxyamines upon activation followed by a reaction with TEMPO radical. Dynamic light scattering measurements showed the hydrodynamic diameter (DH) of the brushes was pH-dependent. Aggregation of single P(BPEM-g-4VP) brushes in water was very pronounced at high pH values but was observed even when the amount of added HCl was enough to completely protonate the pyridine units (DH = 278 nm).

The distance dependence of the localized surface plasmon (SP) extinction of discontinuous gold films is a crucial issue in the application of transmission surface plasmon resonance (T-SPR) spectroscopy to chemical and biological sensing. This derives from the usual sensing configuration, whereby an analyte binds to a selective receptor layer on the gold film at a certain distance from the metal surface. In the present work the distance sensitivity of T-SPR spectroscopy of 1.0-5.0 nm (nominal thickness) gold island films evaporated on silanized glass substrates is studied by using coordination-based self-assembled multilayers, offering thickness tuning in the range from approximately 1 to approximately 15 nm. The morphology, composition and optical properties of the Au/multilayer systems were studied at each step of multilayer construction. High-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM) showed no apparent change in the underlying Au islands, while atomic force microscopy (AFM) indicated flattening of the surface topography during multilayer construction. A regular growth mode of the organic layers was substantiated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Transmission UV-visible spectra showed an increase of the extinction and a red shift of the maximum of the SP band upon addition of organic layers, establishing the distance dependence of the Au SP absorbance. The distance sensitivity of T-SPR spectroscopy can be varied by using characteristic substrate parameters, that is, Au nominal thickness and annealing. In particular, effective sensitivity up to a distance of at least 15 nm is demonstrated with 5 nm annealed Au films. It is shown that intensity measurements, particularly in the plasmon intensity change (PIC) presentation, provide an alternative to the usually measured plasmon band position, offering good accuracy and the possibility of measuring at a single wavelength. The present distance sensitivity results provide the basis for further development of T-SPR transducers based on receptor-coated Au island films.  相似文献

This paper reports on the preparation of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), poly(n-butyl acrylate) (PBA), and polystyrene (PS) brushes at the surface of conducting materials that were modified by the electrochemical reduction of a brominated aryl diazonium salt BF4-, +N2-C6H4-CH(CH3)-Br (D1). The grafted organic species -C6H4-CH(CH3)-Br was found to be very effective in initiating atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of vinyl monomers. This novel approach combining diazonium salts and ATRP allowed PMMA, PBA, and PS brushes to be grown from the surface of iron electrodes. The polymer films were characterized in terms of their chemical structure by infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Atomic force microscopy studies indicated that the polymer brushes are densely packed. Contact angle measurements of water drops on PS and PMMA brushes were 88.1 +/- 2.0 and 70.3 +/- 2.1 degrees, respectively, which is consistent with the published wettability data for the corresponding polymer sheets.  相似文献

Surface-tethered oppositely charged weak polyelectrolyte block copolymer brushes composed of poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (P2VP) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) were grown from the Si wafer by atom-transfer radical polymerization. The P2VP-b-PAA brushes were prepared through hydrolysis of the second PtBA block to the corresponding acrylic acid. The P2VP-b-PAA brushes with different PAA block length were obtained. The P2VP-b-PAA brushes revealed a unique reversible wetting behavior with pH. The difference between the solubility parameters for P2VP and PAA, the changes of surface chemical composition and surface roughness, and the reversible wetting behavior illustrated that the surface rearrangement occurred during treatment of the P2VP-b-PAA brushes by aqueous solution with different pH value. The reversible properties of the P2VP-b-PAA brushes can be used to regulate the adsorption of the sulfonated PS nanoparticles.  相似文献

Evaporation of ultrathin (1.3-10 nm nominal thickness) gold films onto quartz or mica leads to the formation of a layer of rather uniform gold islands on the transparent support. The morphology of ultrathin gold island films of various thicknesses was studied by using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging. The surface plasmon (SP) absorption characteristic of such films is highly sensitive to the surrounding medium, with the plasmon band changing in intensity and wavelength upon binding of various molecules to the surface. The binding process can be monitored quantitatively by measuring the changes in the gold SP absorption, by using transmission UV/Vis spectroscopy. The method, termed transmission surface plasmon resonance (T-SPR) spectroscopy, is shown to be applicable to both chemically and physically adsorbed molecules, in liquid or gas phase, with measurements carried out either ex situ or in situ (real-time measurements) using a variety of molecular probes. Binding to a preformed molecular layer on the Au surface produces a similar response, suggesting the possible use of T-SPR for selective sensing. The sensitivity of T-SPR spectroscopy in detecting molecular binding to the gold depends strongly on the film preparation conditions, and may be comparable to that obtained in surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensing.  相似文献

The construction and characterization of a biosensor based on polymer brushes is reported. The use of polymer brushes combined with nanoparticles was applied to show its suitability as a biosensor platform – with glucose oxidase as an enzyme probe. The biosensor demonstrated a pH‐sensitive on‐off property, and it was further used to control or modulate the electrochemical responses. In terms of the kinetic behavior, we were able to show the changing in the kinetic parameters of glucose oxidase operating in “on” and “off” state of the polymer brushes. The performance of the bioelectrode was investigated by chronoamperometry, impedance electrochemistry and cyclic voltammetric techniques. At optimized experimental conditions the dynamic concentration range was 2.0 to 16.0 mmol L?1 with a detection limit of 5.6×10–6 mol L?1. The repeatability of current responses for injections of 5.0 mmol L?1 glucose was evaluated to be 5.3 % (n=10). The resulting biosensor seemed to provide the enzymes with a biocompatible nanoenvironment as it sustained the enhanced enzyme activity for an extended time and promoted possible good electron transfer through the polymer brushes to the electrode.  相似文献

Chemical patterns consisting of poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (P2VP) brushes in a background of a cross-linked polystyrene (PS) mat enabled the highly selective placement of citrate-stabilized Au nanoparticles (NPs) in arrays on surfaces. The cross-linked PS mat prevented the nonspecific binding of Au NPs, and the regions functionalized with P2VP brushes allowed the immobilization of the particles. Isolated chemical patterns of feature sizes from hundreds to tens of nanometers were prepared by standard lithographic techniques. The number of 13 nm Au NPs bound per feature increased linearly with increasing area of the patterns. This behavior is similar to previous reports using 40 nm particles or larger. Arrays of single NPs were obtained by reducing the dimensions of patterned P2VP brushes to below ~20 nm. To generate dense (center-to-center distance = 80 nm) linear chemical patterns for the placement of rows of single NPs, a block-copolymer (BCP)-assisted lithographic process was used. BCPs healed defects associated with the standard lithographic patterning of small dimensions at high densities and led to highly registered, linear, single NP arrays.  相似文献

In this study, we present nanowear studies using surface force microscopy (SFM), on nanoscopic thin films of reversibly switchable binary polymer brushes [polystyrene (PS) + poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP)] and respective monobrushes [polystyrene and poly(2-vinylpyridine)] synthesized via “grafting to” method. The aim was to tune the wear in nanothin polymer brush surfaces. Therefore, the effect of conformational switching of PS + P2VP brush on treatment with selective solvents for PS and P2VP chains on the wear process was investigated. Wear process on thick spin-coated films of PS and P2VP was also investigated for comparison. Nanowear experiments were performed using SFM tip by repeating scans over the surface to follow the wear process closely. The wear process on different surfaces was explained on the basis of molecular entanglement as well as adhesion and friction on the sample surface. For spin-coated PS film as well as PS and PS + P2VP brush surfaces (treated with toluene) with molecular entanglements at surface, wear mechanism involved formation of ripples. However, in case of spin-coated P2VP films as well as P2VP and PS + P2VP brush surfaces (treated with ethanol) with no molecular entanglements at surface, wear occurred via removal of polymer chains and their accumulation at the rim. For PS + P2VP surface treated with acidic water, wear mechanism was complex and inhomogeneous ripple formation was followed by formation of heaps of polymeric material in the center of scanned area. The extent of wear as measured either by root mean square roughness of the surface or spacing between the ripples, increased with the number of scans for all the surfaces. Our study shows that wear mode of polymer brush surfaces is different for different polymers and can be controlled/tuned by the use of binary polymer brushes.  相似文献

A general method has been developed to determine the ionization constants of polymer thin films based on the stimuli-responsiveness of the polymer. Robust polymer films were fabricated on silicon wafers and gold slides using perfluorophenyl azide (PFPA) as the coupling agent. The ionization constants were measured by a number of techniques including ellipsometry, dynamic contact angle goniometry, and surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRi). Using poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) as the model system, P4VP thin films were fabricated and the ionization constants of the films were measured taking advantage of the pH responsive property of the polymer. The pK(a) determined by ellipsometry, ~4.0, reflects the swelling of the polymer film in response to pH. The pK(a) value calculated from the dynamic contact angle measurements, ~5.0, relies on the change in hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of the films as the polymer undergoes protonation/deprotonation. The pK(a) value measured by SPRi, ~4.9, monitors in situ the change of refractive index of the polymer thin film as it swells upon protonation. This was the first example where SPRi was used to measure the ionization constants of polymers.  相似文献

We report in this work a transmission electron microscopy study of phase morphologies of environmentally responsive mixed poly( t-butyl acrylate) (P tBA)/polystyrene (PS) brushes and mixed poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)/PS brushes on 180 nm silica particles after treatments with nonselective good solvents and selective solvents, respectively. Mixed P tBA/PS brushes were grown from Y-initiator-functionalized silica particles by sequential atom transfer radical polymerization and nitroxide-mediated radical polymerization. Mixed PAA/PS brushes were prepared from mixed P tBA/PS brushes by removal of the t-butyl groups. For mixed P tBA/PS brushes with P tBA M n of 24.2 kDa and PS M n of 23.0 kDa and the corresponding mixed PAA/PS brushes, random worm-like, nearly bicontinuous nanostructures were formed from lateral microphase separation when the particles were cast from nonselective good solvents (chloroform for mixed P tBA/PS brushes and N, N-dimethylformamide for mixed PAA/PS brushes). The feature sizes were on the order of polymer chain root-mean-square end-to-end distances ( approximately 10 nm). In contrast, mixed P tBA/PS brushes with lower molecular weights (P tBA M n = 10.4 kDa and PS M n = 11.9 kDa) did not strongly phase separate after being cast from chloroform. After the solvents in the particle dispersions were gradually changed to selective solvents ( n-octane for mixed P tBA/PS brushes and H 2O for mixed PAA/PS brushes), isolated microdomains with an average size of 14-19 nm were formed as one grafted polymer collapsed and associated to form isolated microdomains, which were shielded by another grafted polymer yielding surface-tethered micellar structures. These results confirmed the theoretical predictions of the formation of "rippled" nanostructures and surface micellar structures of mixed homopolymer brushes induced by nonselective and selective solvents, respectively.  相似文献

We present herein a versatile method for grafting polymer brushes to passivated silicon surfaces based on the Cu(I)-catalyzed Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition (click chemistry) of omega-azido polymers and alkynyl-functionalized silicon substrates. First, the "passivation" of the silicon substrates toward polymer adsorption was performed by the deposition of an alkyne functionalized self-assembled monolayer (SAM). Then, three tailor-made omega-azido linear brush precursors, i.e., PEG-N3, PMMA-N3, and PS-N3 (Mn approximately 20,000 g/mol), were grafted to alkyne-functionalized SAMs via click chemistry in tetrahydrofuran. The SAM, PEG, PMMA, and PS layers were characterized by ellipsometry, scanning probe microscopy, and water contact angle measurements. Results have shown that the grafting process follows the scaling laws developed for polymer brushes, with a significant dependence over the weight fraction of polymer in the grafting solution and the grafting time. The chemical nature of the brushes has only a weak influence on the click chemistry grafting reaction and morphologies observed, yielding polymer brushes with thickness of ca. 6 nm and grafting densities of ca. 0.2 chains/nm2. The examples developed herein have shown that this highly versatile and tunable approach can be extended to the grafting of a wide range of polymer (pseudo-) brushes to silicon substrates without changing the tethering strategy.  相似文献

We investigated the adhesive properties of binary heterogeneous polymer brushes made from end-functionalized polystyrene (PS) and poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) chains. The molecular organization of the mixed brush could be varied reversibly by exposure to selective solvents for PS (toluene) and for P2VP (acidic water). This exposure results in reversible switching of adhesive and wetting properties. The manner in which the adhesion switching occurs can be tuned by the composition of mixed brushes. However, the outer surface composition could be enriched more effectively in PS after the toluene treatment than in P2VP after the acidic water treatment. As a result, the mixed brush compositions that showed the largest difference in properties between an exposure to toluene and an exposure to water were the P2VP-rich compositions. Adhesive properties, tested against a soft hydrophobic pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) using a probe test, always showed smaller differences between solvent treatments than wetting properties with water, suggesting a much higher sensitivity of the hydrophobic/hydrophilic brushes to polar molecules than to nonpolar molecules.  相似文献

The growth of polymer brushes on polymer substrates is often challenging because of substrate incompatibility with the organic solvents used for initiator attachment. This letter reports the use of layer-by-layer adsorption of macroinitiators and subsequent aqueous ATRP from these immobilized initiators to prepare polymer brushes on polymeric substrates. Polyethersulfone (PES) films and porous membranes were modified with polyelectrolyte multilayer films, and a previously developed polycationic initiator, poly(2-(trimethylammonium iodide)ethyl methacrylate-co-2-(2-bromoisobutyryloxy)ethyl acrylate), was then electrostatically adsorbed onto these polyelectrolyte films. The immobilized macroinitiator is very efficient in initiating the growth of polymer brushes on PES, as demonstrated by aqueous syntheses of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) and poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) films. PHEMA (250 nm thick) and PDMAEMA (40 nm thick) brushes were grown in 2 h from surfaces modified with polycationic initiators. Moreover, this procedure is effective for growing brushes in the pores of PES membranes.  相似文献

An ordered nanostructure can be created from the hybrid materials of self-assembly poly(3-hexyl thiophene-b-2-vinyl pyridine) and nicotinic acid-modified titanium dioxide nanoparticles (P3HT-b-P2VP/TiO(2)). TEM and XRD analyses reveal that the TiO(2) nanoparticles (NPs) are preferentially confined in the P2VP domain of P3HT-b-P2VP whereas TiO(2) NPs interact with either pure P3HT or a blend of P3HT and P2VP to produce microsized phase segregation. The morphologies of lamellar and cylindrical structures are disturbed when the loading of TiO(2) NPs is 40 wt % or higher. Cylindrical P3HT-b-P2VP/TiO(2) exhibits a small blue shift in absorption and photoluminescence spectra with increasing TiO(2) loading as compared to P3HT/TiO(2). The NPs cause a slightly misaligned P3HT domain in the copolymer. Furthermore, the PL quenching of P3HT-b-P2VP/TiO(2) becomes very large as a result of efficient charge separation in the ordered nanodomain at 16 nm. Solar cells fabricated from self-assembly P3HT-b-P2VP/TiO(2) hybrid materials exhibit a >30 fold improvement in power conversion efficiency as compared to the corresponding 0.3P3HT-0.7P2VP/TiO(2) polymer blend hybrid. This study paves the way for the further development of high-efficiency polymer-inorganic nanoparticle hybrid solar cells using a self-assembled block copolymer.  相似文献

Helical poly(3-methyl-4-vinylpyridine) (P3M4VP)/amino acid complexes have been prepared via acid-base reaction of the achiral polymer with D and L amino acids: alanine, leucine, valine, serine and phenylalanine. The circular dichroism (CD) spectra of P3M4VP/D- and L-alanine complexes in CH(3)OH/H(2)O show opposing (near mirror image) Cotton effect signals at 278.4, 274.8 and 270.8 nm, indicating the formation of enantiomeric secondary structures. The formation of the enantiomeric structures is supported by observed [alpha](D)(25) values of -3.0 and +3.0 for the P3M4VP/D-alanine and P3M4VP/L-alanine complexes, respectively. The preparation of helical P3M4VP/amino acid complexes has been carried out in CH(3)OH and H(2)O at pH 1.8 and 2.7. The intensities of the Cotton effect signals were good. For example, for the P3M4VP/L-alanine complexes in CH(3)OH/H(2)O and H(2)O (pH 1.8), the second Cotton effect signal around 275-277 nm show [theta;] values of 49 980 and 79 210 deg . cm(2) . dmol(-1), respectively. The formation of the helical secondary structure is rapid. The acid-base reaction between P3M4VP and L-alanine in CH(3)OH/H(2)O, in 10 min, show a CD spectrum with Cotton effect signals at 274 and 272 nm with [theta] values of 27,000 deg . cm(2) . dmol(-1) and -36,000 deg . cm(2) . dmol(-1), respectively. P3M4VP permits ready conformational reorientation on complexation with amino acids, but once the helical P3M4VP/amino acid complexes are formed, it is stable at room temperature. P3M4VP is not compatible with HeLa ovarian cancer cells, but the helical P3M4VP/amino acid complexes are compatible with HeLa cells. The complexes minimally interfere with the adhesion and growth of HeLa cells on complex surfaces. Helical poly(3-methyl-4-vinylpyridine)/D- and L-alanine complexes support the attachment and growth of HeLa cells. The micrographs shows HeLa cells after three days: left panel: on P3M4VP/L-alanine complex; right panel: on P3M4VP/D-alanine complex.  相似文献

The photodissociation of p-xylene at 266 nm in n-heptane and acetonitrile has been studied with use of nanosecond fluorescence and absorption spectroscopy. The p-methylbenzyl radical was identified in n-heptane and acetonitrile by its fluorescence, which was induced by excitation at 308 nm. The p-xylene radical cation was observed in acetonitrile by its absorption. In n-heptane, the decay rate of the S(1) state of p-xylene ((3.2 +/- 0.2) x 10(7) s(-1)) is equal to the growth rate of the p-methylbenzyl radical ((2.7 +/- 0.4) x 10(7) s(-1)), showing that the molecule dissociates via the S(1) state into the radical by C-H bond homolysis (quantum efficiency approximately 5.0 x 10(-3)). In acetonitrile, the formation of the p-xylene radical cation requires two 266 nm photons, and the decay rate of the radical cation ((1.6 +/- 0.2) x 10(6) s(-1)) equals the growth rate of the p-methylbenzyl radical ((2.0 +/- 0.2) x 10(6) s(-1)). This shows that the radical cation dissociates into the radical by deprotonation (quantum efficiency approximately 8.9 x 10(-2)).  相似文献

The primary charge separation and electron-transfer processes of photosynthesis occur in the reaction center (RC). Isolated RCs of the green filamentous anoxygenic phototrophic bacterium Chloroflexus aurantiacus were studied at room temperature by using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy with selective excitation. Upon excitation in the Q(Y) absorbance band of the bacteriochlorophyll (BChl) dimer (P) at 865 nm, a 7.0 +/- 0.5 ps kinetic component was observed in the 538 nm region (Q(X) band of the bacteriopheophytin (BPheo)), 750 nm region (Q(Y) band of the BPheo), and 920 nm region (stimulated emission of the excited-state of P), indicating that this lifetime represents electron transfer from P to BPheo. The same time constant was also observed upon 740 nm or 800 nm excitation. A longer lifetime (300 +/- 30 ps), which was assigned to the time of reduction of the primary quinone, Q(A), was also observed. The transient absorption spectra and kinetics all indicate that only one electron-transfer branch is involved in primary charge separation under these excitation conditions. However, the transient absorption changes upon excitation in the Soret band at 390 nm reveal a more complex set of energy and electron-transfer processes. By comparison to studies on the RCs of the purple bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides, we discuss the possible mechanism of electron-transfer pathway dependence on excitation energy and propose a model of the Cf. aurantiacus RC that better explains the observed results.  相似文献

The paper provides new insights into the structure of Pt-containing diblock and triblock copolymers based on poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP), using a combination of atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and anomalous small-angle X-ray scattering (ASAXS). Parallel studies using methods contributing supplemental structural information allowed us to comprehensively characterize sophisticated polymer systems during metalation and to exclude possible ambiguity of the data interpretation of each of the methods. AFM and TEM make available the determination of sizes of the micelles and of the Pt-containing micelle cores, respectively, while a combination of XRD, TEM, and ASAXS reveals Pt-nanoparticle size distributions and locations along with the structural information about the polymer matrix. In addition, for the first time, ASAXS revealed the organization of Pt-nanoparticle-filled diblock and triblock copolymers in the bulk. The nanoparticle characteristics are mainly determined by the type of block copolymer system in which they are found: larger particles (2.0-3.0 nm) are formed in triblock copolymer micelles, while smaller ones (1.5-2.5 nm) are found in diblock copolymer micelles. This can be explained by facilitated intermicellar exchange in triblock copolymer systems. For both systems, Pt nanoparticles have narrow particle size distributions as a result of a strong interaction between the nanoparticle surface and the P4VP units inside the micelle cores. The pH of the medium mainly influences the particle location rather than the particle size. A structural model of Pt-nanoparticle clustering in the diblock PEO-b-P4VP and triblock P4VP-b-PEO-b-P4VP copolymers in the bulk was constructed ab initio from the ASAXS data. This model reveals that nearly spherical micellar cores of about 10 nm in diameter (filled with Pt nanoparticles) aggregate forming slightly oblate hollow bodies with an outer diameter of about 40 nm.  相似文献

Polymer brush films with chemical functionality to attach to site specific substrate areas are introduced for area selective deposition (ASD) application. It is demonstrated that polymer brushes with chemically defined end sites can be selectively bound to copper‐specific regions of patterned copper/silica (Cu/SiO2) substrates. The process described overcomes various limitations of currently used technology including cost, complexity, and throughput, with potential implications for future electronic devices and nanomanufacturing. A comparative study of amine‐terminated polystyrene and amine‐terminated poly‐2‐vinyl pyridine polymer brushes (i.e., PS‐NH2 and P2VP‐NH2) with similar molecular weights display contrasting behavior on patterned Cu/SiO2 line features. Further, a thiol terminated poly‐2‐vinyl pyridine polymer brush (i.e., P2VP‐SH) is investigated as a direct spin‐on process to fabricate a metal oxide layer atop Cu areas only. The results presented here detail a novel methodology and open a new exciting process for ASD practices that can facilitate the precise deposition of dense metal, semiconductor, or dielectric films. We also discuss the applicability of polymer brushes to ASD uses going forward.  相似文献
