Novel memory effect found in nematic liquid crystal/fine particle system   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Novel liquid crystalline composites composed of a nematic two-frequency-addressing liquid crystal and organized clay mineral (about 1 wt %) have been prepared. The particles of clay mineral were dispersed homogeneously in the liquid crystal. The composite cells became transparent within 50ms when a 60 Hz electric field was applied. The transparent state was maintained after the field was switched off. It transformed into a turbid light scattering state by applying 1.5 kHz electric field which caused dynamic scattering in the cell. The light transmittance of both memory states did not change after 20 h without the electric field.  相似文献

The light scattering technique was used to investigate the viscoelastic parameters characterizing director twist distortions in miscible nematic mixtures of 5CB (pentacyanobiphenyl) with two side chain liquid crystal polymers and a main chain liquid crystal polymer. By applying an AC electric field to homeotropically-aligned nematic monodomains of the mixtures, the field-dependent scattering intensities and director orientation fluctuation relaxation rates yield, respectively, the twist elastic constant K22 and viscosity coefficient γ1. The results directly demonstrate that the addition of liquid crystal polymers causes substantial decreases of the relaxation rates for dynamic light scattering from the twist mode and these changes are due to small decreases in K22 coupled with large increases in γ1. The decrements in K22 are comparable for both side chain and main chain liquid crystal polymers. The relative increase in the twist viscosity for the side chain liquid crystal polymers is much smaller than those of main chain polymers. A theoretical model is used to qualitatively interpret the difference between the viscous behaviour of the twist mode for both side chain and main chain liquid crystal polymers in a nematic solvent.  相似文献

Miscibility phase diagrams of mixtures of side-on side chain liquid crystalline polymers (s-SCLCP) and low molar mass liquid crystals (E48 and E44) have been established by means of polarized optical microscopy and light scattering. E48 and E44 are cyanobiphenyl-based eutectic nematic liquid crystal (LC) mixtures with nematic-isotropic transition temperatures of 93 and 105 C, respectively. The phase diagram of the s-SCLCP/E48 system reveals the coexistence of an isotropic nematic region and a single nematic phase in order of descending temperature. The single nematic phase suggests that the pair is miscible in the nematic region. On the other hand, the s-SCLCP/E44 mixture shows liquid liquid and nematic nematic coexistence phases, suggestive of the immiscibility character of the pair. These nematic phase diagrams of the s-SCLCP/E48 and s-SCLCP/E44 have been analysed in the context of the combined Flory-Huggins (FH) free energy for isotropic mixing and the Maier-Saupe (MS) free energy for nematic ordering of the mesogens. This combined FH/MS theory is capable of predicting the observed nematic phase diagrams consisting of liquid liquid, liquid nematic, nematic nematic, and the pure nematic regions. The change of colour accompanying the appearance and disappearance of the inversion walls may be attributed to the temperature dependence of birefringence.  相似文献

We report a light scattering study of the translational diffusion of a suspension of silica spheres in the liquid crystal, 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl. We observe a small but significant increase of the effective hydrodynamic radius of the colloidal particles as the transition to the nematic phase is approached. This effect can be understood in terms of orientational pre-wetting of the silica spheres.  相似文献

We present a mean-field theory to describe phase separations in mixtures of a nematic liquid crystal and a colloidal particle. The theory takes into account an orientational ordering of liquid crystals and a crystalline ordering of colloidal particles. We calculate phase diagrams on the temperature-concentration plane, depending on interactions between a liquid crystal and a colloidal surface and a coupling between nematic and crystalline ordering. We find various phase separation processes, such as a nematic-crystal phase separation and nematic-isotropic-crystal triple point. Inside binodal curves, we find new unstable and metastable regions which are important in phase ordering dynamics. We also find a stable nematic-crystalline (NC) phase, where colloidal particles dispersed in a nematic phase can form a crystalline structure. The coexistence between two NC phases with different concentrations can be appear though the coupling between nematic and crystalline ordering.  相似文献

Switchable nematic emulsions are micron-sized droplets of nematic liquid crystal, floating in isotropic fluid matrices. Such droplets can be switched from an opaque (off) to a transparent (on) state by application of very low electric fields. It is known that the electro-optical properties of liquid crystal dispersions are affected by several parameters, including the liquid crystal loading. The electro-optical response of nematic emulsions has been investigated as a function of liquid crystal weight percentage. Almost transparent films with a reduced contrast ratio are obtained with lower liquid crystal contents. A macroscopic phase separation is observed when liquid crystal content exceeds 45 wt %. On the contrary, large contrast ratios and very low switching fields can be obtained if liquid crystal ranges from 25 to 35 wt %. Consequently, nematic emulsions prepared in this liquid crystal range can be used as promising systems for electro-optical applications. In addition to technological developments, these results can help computational and basic studies of phase separation in novel multiphase liquid crystalline materials.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a method to accelerate the crystallisation of nematic liquid crystal mixtures based on crystallisation theory. This method is to hold a nematic liquid crystal sample at a temperature suitable for crystal growth after aging it at a temperature suitable for nucleation. After we specified these temperatures of a nematic liquid crystal mixture using differential scanning calorimetry, we demonstrate that the two-temperature aging method is effective for the crystallisation of other nematic liquid crystal mixtures in which the crystal-liquid crystal transition temperature has so far been undetectable.  相似文献

We study the morphology of spinodal decompositions (SDs) in mixtures of a liquid crystal and a colloidal particle by solving time-dependent Landau-Ginzburg equations for a conserved order parameter (concentration) and two nonconserved order parameters (orientation and crystallization). We numerically examine the coupling between concentration, nematic ordering, and crystalline ordering in two dimensional fluid mixtures, coexisting a nematic and a crystalline phase. On increasing the concentration of colloidal particles, we have three different SDs: a nematic order-induced SD, a phase-separation-induced SD (PSD), and a crystalline-order-induced SD (CSD). In NSD, the phase ordering can lead to fibrillar and cellular networks of the minority colloidal-particle-rich phase in early stages. In the PSD, we find a bicontinuous network structure consisting of a nematic phase rich in liquid crystal and a crystalline phase rich in colloidal particles. In the CSD, nematic droplets can be formed in a crystalline matrix. Asymmetric mixtures of a liquid crystal and a colloidal particle lead to rich varieties of morphologies.  相似文献

In the last few years, experimental data of many different sources has been gathered to show that order parameter curves of essentially all nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) compounds can be reduced to a single and universal curve of the corresponding states; experimental data of an impressive number of different nematic compounds has been linearly rescaled in such a way that all them coalesced in a single curve. The surprising novelty observed on NLCs is that this universal behaviour is not restricted to the neighbourhoods of a critical region, as is usually expected from critical phenomena, but it covers the entire domain of the nematic phase, from the nematic isotropic temperature to the nematic crystalline temperature. The aim of this paper is to study the statistical mechanics fundamentals of this behaviour and show that it is a consequence of the universality of the angular part of the potential of the interaction between the particles composing the liquid crystal (LC). We will illustrate this behaviour presenting evidences that it can be found on the smectic-A phase.  相似文献

本文报道用聚乙烯咔唑-2,4,7三硝基芴酮电荷转移复合物作光导层,与向列型及胆甾向列型混合液晶组成的夹心池结构制成的扭曲场效应、相变存储效应及动态存储效应三种直流透射式光阀及其性能的研究结果。制得的光阀均有明显开关效应。此外,还详细研究了扭曲场效应液晶光阀的阈值电压、对比度及上升时间与写入光功率的依赖关系。用白光写入,He-Ne激光读出,在扭曲场效应光阀上可实现非相干光-相干光转换,得到图象。用MTF法测得的光阀分辨率为34lps/mm。  相似文献

The conformation of the main-chain (backbone) of a combined main-chain/side-chain liquid crystalline polymer has been qualitatively determined by small angle neutron scattering in the oriented nematic, the smectic A and the smectic C phases. The polymer backbone presents only a weak anisotropy, of prolate shape, in the nematic and the smectic C phases. A stronger reorientation of the backbones in the direction of the applied magnetic field is measured for the SA phase. However, this anisotropy remains small compared to the stretching of a main-chain liquid crystal polymer and the smectic structure results apparently from side-chain ordering. On the other hand, hydrodynamic measurements show that the combined polymer, in solvent, is as flexible as a polystyrene chain. This result is compatible with an explanation for the weak observed anisotropy.  相似文献

Dynamic light scattering spectroscopy has been used to determine the temperature dependence of the anchoring strength of the nematic liquid crystal 8OCB on DMOAP-silanated glass surfaces inducing homeotropic alignment. Wedge-type glass cells with known thickness profile starting from 150 nm to several microns have been used in the experiments. The relaxation rates of the nematic fluctuations with the wave vector perpendicular to the confining surfaces have been measured as a function of the cell thickness. Fitting of the thickness dependence of the relaxation rate allows for straightforward determination of the surface extrapolation length and therefore also the strength of the surface anchoring, which is 1×10-4 J m-2. The overall experimental accuracy of the experiments is discussed.  相似文献

The influence of the shape anisotropy of magnetic particles on the isotropic–nematic phase transition was studied in ferronematics based on the nematic liquid crystal (LC) 4-(trans-4-n-hexylcyclohexyl)-isothiocyanato-benzene (6CHBT). The LC was doped with spherical or rod-like magnetic particles of different size and volume concentrations. The phase transition from isotropic to nematic phase was observed by polarising microscope as well as by capacitance measurements. The influence of the concentration and the shape anisotropy of the magnetic particles on the isotropic–nematic phase transition in LC are demonstrated here. The results are in a good agreement with recent theoretical predictions.  相似文献
