Adsorption of CO on Pt(100), Pt(410), and Pt(110) surfaces has been investigated by density functional theory (DFT) method (periodic DMol(3)) with full geometry optimization and without symmetry restriction. Adsorption energies, structures, and vibrational frequencies of CO on these surfaces are studied by considering multiple possible adsorption sites and comparing them with the experimental data. The same site preference as inferred experiments is obtained for all the surfaces. For Pt(100), CO adsorbs at the bridge site at low coverage, but the atop site becomes most favorable for the c(2 x 2) structure at 1/2 monolayer. For Pt(410) (stepped surface with (100) terrace and (110) step), CO adsorbs preferentially at the atop site on the step edge at 1/4 monolayer, but CO populates also at other atop and bridge sites on the (100) terrace at 1/2 monolayer. The multiple possible adsorption sites probably correspond to the multiple states in the temperature-programmed desorption spectra for CO desorption. For Pt(110), CO adsorbs preferentially at the atop site on the edge for both the reconstructed (1 x 2) and the un-reconstructed (1 x 1) surfaces. When adjacent sites along the edge row begin to be occupied, the CO molecules tilt alternately by ca. 20 degrees from the surface normal in opposite directions for both the (1 x 2) and (1 x 1) surfaces.  相似文献

Adsorption of CO on Pt(211) and Pt(311) surfaces has been investigated by the density functional theory (DFT) method (periodic DMol3) with full geometry optimization. Adsorption energies, structures, and C-O stretching vibrational frequencies are studied by considering multiple possible adsorption sites and comparing them with the experimental data. The calculated C-O stretching frequencies agree well with the experimental ones, and precise determination of adsorption sites can be carried out. For Pt(211), CO adsorbs at the atop site on the step edge at low coverage, but CO adsorbs at the atop and bridge sites simultaneously on both the step edge and the terrace with further increasing CO coverage. The present results interpret the reflection adsorption infrared (RAIR) spectra of Brown and co-workers very well from low to high coverage. For Pt(311), CO adsorbs also at the atop site on the step edge at low coverage. The lifting of reconstruction by CO adsorption occurs also for Pt(311), whereas the energy gain for lifting the reconstruction of the Pt(311) surface is smaller than that for Pt(110). The largest difference between the stepped Pt(211)/Pt(311) and Pt(110) surfaces is the occupation on the edge sites at higher coverage. For the stepped surfaces, the bridge site begins to be occupied at higher coverage, whereas the atop site is always occupied for the Pt(110) surface.  相似文献

The chemisorption of molecular oxygen on the missing-row reconstructed Pt[110](1 x 2) surface has been investigated using ab initio calculations based on spin-density functional theory. The calculated energetic, structural, vibrational, and electronic properties of the chemisorbed O2 species are discussed in terms of the available experimental data. We find that adsorption in the ridge-bridge site is strongly preferred on energetic grounds, relative to adsorption on the [111] microfacets or in the valley sites of the reconstructed surface. We argue in favor of initial adsorption in the ridge-bridge sites, followed by adsorption in the valley long-bridge sites at higher coverages, without excluding the possibility of bridge-site adsorption on the [111] microfacets.  相似文献

The surface chemistry of vinyltrimethylsilane (VTMS) on Si(100)-2x1 has been investigated using multiple internal reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, and thermal desorption mass spectrometry. Molecular adsorption of VTMS at submonolayer coverages is dominating at cryogenic temperatures (100 K). Upon adsorption at room temperature, chemical reaction involving rehybridization of the double bond in VTMS occurs. Further annealing induces several reactions: molecular desorption from a monolayer by 400 K, formation and desorption of propylene by 500 K, decomposition leading to the release of silicon-containing products around 800 K, and, finally, surface decomposition leading to the production of silicon carbide and the release of hydrogen as H(2) at 800 K. This chemistry is markedly different from the previously reported behavior of VTMS on Si(111)-7x7 surfaces resulting in 100% conversion to silicon carbide. Thus, some information about the surface intermediates of the VTMS reaction with silicon surfaces can be deduced.  相似文献

Coverage-dependent adsorption of atomic sulfur on Fe(110): a DFT study   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Adsorption of atomic sulfur at different coverages on the Fe(110) surface is examined using density functional theory (DFT) in order to investigate the effect that adsorbate-adsorbate interactions may have on the surface properties. S is adsorbed in the high-symmetry adsorption sites: 4-fold hollow, bridge, and atop sites in the following surface arrangements: c(2 x 2) and p(1 x 1) which correspond to coverages of 1/2 and 1 monolayer, respectively. The binding energy, work function change, adsorption geometry, charge density distribution, magnetic properties, and density of states are examined and compared to our previous study of S adsorbed at 1/4 monolayer coverage and p(2 x 2) arrangement [Spencer et al. Surf. Sci. 2003, 540, 420]. It was found that S forms polar covalent bonds to the surface. The bonding goes from being S-Fe dominated at the low coverages to being S-S dominated at the higher coverages where the S atoms are located closer together on the surface and interact with each other.  相似文献

The interaction of NO with TiO2 (110)-(1 x 2) surface has been studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, and low-energy electron diffraction, with the aim to clarify the role of ordered defects in NO reactivity toward TiO2. The interaction was studied for exposures up to 2000 L. However, the main effects occur already in the first 2 L. The exposure of the surfaces to NO resulted in the healing of defect sites without adsorption of N and low-energy electron diffraction shows that the surface (1 x 2) symmetry is not lost after the NO dose.  相似文献

The basic chemical structure and orientation of ethylene chemisorbed on Si(114)-(2 x 1) at submonolayer coverage is characterized in ultrahigh vacuum using transmission Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The spectra are consistent with di-sigma bonding of ethylene to the surface with a preferential molecular orientation over macroscopic lengths. These results are supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations of vibrational frequencies for optimized ethylene-Si(114) structures occupying the dimer and rebonded atom surface sites. A detailed analysis of the strong angular and polarization dependence of the C-H stretching mode intensities is also consistent with the adsorption structures identified by DFT, indicating that ethylene chemisorbs with the C-C bond axis parallel to the structural rows oriented along the [10] direction on the Si(114)-(2 x 1) surface. The results indicate that the unique structure of this surface makes it an excellent template for elucidating relationships between surface structure and organic reaction mechanisms on silicon.  相似文献

We present predictions of reaction rate constants for dissociative adsorption reactions of CO(x) (x = 1, 2) and NO(x) (x = 1, 2) molecules on the basal graphite (0001) surface based on potential energy surfaces (PES) obtained by the integrated ONIOM(B3LYP:DFTB-D) quantum chemical hybrid approach with dispersion-augmented density functional tight binding (DFTB-D) as low level method. Following an a priori methodology developed in a previous investigation of water dissociative adsorption reactions on graphite, we used a C(94)H(24) dicircumcoronene graphene slab as model system for the graphite surface in finite-size molecular structure investigations, and single adsorbate molecules reacting with the pristine graphene sheet. By employing the ONIOM PES information in RRKM theory we predict reaction rate constants in the temperature range between 1,000 and 5,000 K. We find that among CO(x) and NO(x) adsorbate species, the dissociative adsorption reactions of CO(2) and both radical species NO and NO(2) are likely candidates as a cause for high temperature oxidation and erosion of graphite (0001) surfaces, whereas reaction with CO is not likely to lead to long-lived surface defects. High temperature quantum chemical molecular dynamics simulations (QM/MD) at T = 5,000 K using on-the-fly DFTB-D energies and gradients confirm the results of our PES study.  相似文献

The adsorption and decomposition of NO have been investigated by using density functional theory method at the generalized gradient approximation level. We have performed calculations on adsorption energies and structures of NO on Ni(211) and Pd(211) surfaces with full-geometry optimization and compared them with the experimental data. The most favorite adsorption on both surfaces occurs at the bridge site parallel to step edge (sb), while the energy difference from the second favorite site of a threefold hollow site near step edge is less than 0.1 eV. Decomposition pathways have been investigated with transition state search. The decomposition pathway, where NO leans toward the step, is most probable for both surfaces. The overall activation energy for decomposition is 0.39 and 1.26 eV for Ni(211) and Pd(211), respectively. The present results clearly show that the NO molecules on Pd(211) are less activated than those on Ni(211). We have studied also reorganization of NO on Pd(211) at higher coverages up to 1/3 ML (monolayer) [three NO molecules in a (3 x 1) unit cell]. The site occupation is not in a sequential manner as the NO coverage is increased, and a reorganization of NO adsorbates occurs (the NO molecule at sb becomes tilting up at higher coverage), which can interpret the experimental data of Yates and co-workers very well.  相似文献

First-principles calculations based on density functional theory-generalized gradient approximation method have been performed on cesium adsorption on Si(001)(2 x 1) surface. The optimized geometries and adsorption energies have been obtained and the preferred binding sites have been determined for the coverage (Theta) of one monolayer and half a monolayer. At Theta = 0.5 ML the most stable adsorption site is shown to be T3 site. At Theta = 1 ML two Cs atoms are adsorbed at HH and T3 sites, respectively. It was found that the saturation coverage of Cs for the Si(001)(2 x 1)-Cs surface is one monolayer instead of half a monolayer. This finding supports the majority of experimental observations but does not support recent coaxial impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy investigations [Surf. Sci. 531, L340 (2003)] and He(+) Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy studies [Phys. Rev. B 62, 4545 (2000)]. Mulliken charge and overlap population analysis showed that the Cs-Si bond is indeed ionic rather than polarized covalent as generally assumed for alkali metal (AM) on Si(001)(2 x 1) surface. Geometrical structure analysis seems to have limitations in determining the nature of AM-substrate bond. We also found that the silicon surface is metallic and semiconducting for the coverages of 0.5 and 1 ML, respectively.  相似文献

The surfaces of the magnetic data storage hard disks used in computers are coated with a thin film of amorphous carbon and a layer of perfluoropolyalkyl ether (PFPE) lubricant. Both protect the surface of the magnetic layer from contact with the read-write head flying over the disk surface. Although the most commonly used carbon films are amorphous hydrogenated carbon, a-CH(x), it has been suggested that the thermal properties of amorphous fluorinated carbon films, a-CF(x), might be superior. This work has probed the interaction of small fluorinated ethers and alcohols with the surfaces of a-CF(x) films to understand the effects of carbon film fluorination on the interaction of the lubricant with its surface. Temperature-programmed desorption was used to measure the desorption energies of small fluorocarbons from the a-CF(x) surface and to compare their desorption energies with those from the surfaces of a-CH(x) films. These measurements reveal that, similarly to a-CH(x) films, a-CF(x) films expose a heterogeneous surface on which fluorocarbons adsorb at sites with a range of binding energies. The fluorocarbon ethers all have lower heats of adsorption than their hydrocarbon counterparts, suggesting that the ethers adsorb by donation of electron density from the oxygen lone-pair electrons to sites on the surface. Fluorinated alcohols have roughly the same heats of adsorption as their hydrocarbon counterparts. There is little significant difference between the interactions of fluorinated ethers (or alcohols) with the surfaces of either a-CF(x) or a-CH(x) films.  相似文献

Adsorption and diffusion of carbon monoxide on Pd low‐index surfaces and missing‐row Pd (110) reconstructed surface have been investigated by the extended London–Eyring–Polyani–Sato (LEPS) method constructed by means of a five‐parameter Morse potential. All critical characteristics, such as adsorption site, adsorption geometry, binding energy, CO vibrational frequency have been obtained and compared with the experimental and theoretical data. On these surfaces, the stable adsorption sites of CO are changed with increasing CO coverage. On the missing‐row Pd (110) reconstructed surface, there are five stable adsorption sites: H1, H2 (H1 and H2 are threefold hollow sites on (111) subsurface), B (bridge site on the second layer), SB (short‐bridge site), and T (top site). The dynamics of NO(x) species adsorbed on BaO(100) have been investigated with ab initio molecular dynamics simulations at a temperature of 300 degrees C. Nitrites are found to continuously interconvert between different adsorption configurations. For both nitrites and nitrates, diffusion events between anion sites are observed. These findings support the use of spillover mechanisms often postulated in mechanistic models of catalysts based on the NO(x)() storage and reduction concept. The large number of possible adsorption configurations are reflected in broad calculated vibrational signatures. These results explain the corresponding property observed in experimental infrared measurements of NO(x)() species on BaO. The dynamic response of the BaO(100) surface is found to strongly depend on the nature of the surface-adsorbate interaction. The largest distortions are predicted for nitrite adsorption.  相似文献

This paper presents the first molecular level investigation of chemical reactivity of a surface of an amorphous diffusion barrier film deposited on a Si(100)-2 x 1 single crystal. Vinyltrimethylsilane (VTMS) is chosen as a probe molecule because of its chemical properties and because of its role as a ligand in a common copper deposition precursor, hexafluoroacetylacetonato-copper-vinyltrimethylsilane, (hfac)Cu(VTMS). The surface chemistry of vinyltrimethylsilane on titanium carbonitride-covered Si(100)-2 x 1 has been investigated using multiple internal reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (MIR-FTIR), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), thermal desorption mass spectrometry, and computational analysis. On a film with nominal surface stoichiometry TiC(x)N(y) (x approximately y approximately 1) preannealed to 800 K, VTMS adsorbs molecularly at cryogenic temperatures even at submonolayer coverages; the major pathway for its temperature-programmed evolution is desorption. Adsorption at room temperature leads to chemisorption via a double-bond attachment. A set of computational models was designed to investigate the possible adsorption sites for a VTMS molecule on a TiCN-covered Si(100)-2 x 1 surface. A comparison of the computational predictions for a variety of possible adsorption sites with the results of thermal desorption and infrared measurements suggests that approximately 90% of the adsorbed VTMS is chemisorbed along the Ti-C bond while approximately 10% is chemisorbed on a Ti corner atom, the minority site of the surface. The Ti-N bond is not participating in the chemisorption process.  相似文献

Two coexisting adsorption states of molecularly adsorbed acetylene on the Si(001)-(2 x 1) surface have been identified by a combined study based on the high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy and density functional computations. Seven possible adsorbate-substrate structures are considered theoretically including their full vibrational analysis. Based on a significantly enhanced experimental resolution, the assignment of 15 C2H2- and C2D2-derived vibrational modes identifies a dominant di-sigma bonded molecule adsorbed on top of a single Si-Si dimer. Additionally there is clear evidence for a second minority species which is di-sigma bonded between two Si-Si dimers within the same dimer row (end-bridge geometry). The possible symmetries of the adsorbate complexes are discussed based on the specular and off-specular vibrational measurements. They suggest lower than ideal C(2v) and C(s) symmetries for on-top and end-bridge species, respectively. At low coverages the symmetry reductions might be lifted.  相似文献

Copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) on reconstructed rutile TiO(2) was studied with ultrahigh vacuum variable temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. On cross-linked TiO(2)(110)-(1 x 2), the CuPc molecules at low coverages sparsely lay flat at the link sites and tilted in troughs between [001] rows. Increase of the CuPc coverage led to the trapping of the CuPc molecules by the rectangular surface cells fenced by the oxygen columns along the [001] direction and the cross-link rows. Each cell could trap one CuPc molecule at intermediate coverages and two CuPc molecules at higher coverages. On TiO(2)(210), the CuPc molecules tilted in defect-free areas and lay at defect sites with their molecular planes parallel to the substrate surface. Further increase of the CuPc coverage induced the formation of one- and two-dimensional assemblies on TiO(2)(210).  相似文献
