A catalyst based on plasma-chemical β-SiC and TiO2 with a palladium content of 10 wt % has been synthesized. The dependence of the rate of the CO oxidation reaction at room temperature and low CO concentrations (less than 100 mg/m3) on the β-SiC content has been studied. It has been found that with a β-SiC content of 8 to 10 wt %, the catalyst has a maximum reaction rate, which is three times that on a catalyst based on pure TiO2 including palladium clusters. The catalysts are promising for use in catalytic and photocatalytic air purification systems.

Supported Au catalysts for low-temperature CO oxidation were prepared by solvated metal atom impregnation (SMAI) and conventional impregnation (CI). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy investigations indicated that gold in all the samples was in the metallic state. TEM and XRD measurements showed that the mean diameter of Au particles prepared by SMAI was smaller than that of those prepared by CI with the same gold content. Catalytic tests showed that SMAI catalysts had higher CO oxidation activity than CI catalysts with the same compositions. Both SMAI and CI Au/TiO2catalysts exhibited high activities in low temperature CO oxidation. Full CO conversion was obtained at 323 K for 3.1 wt.% Au/TiO2 (SMAI) catalyst, which displayed higher activity than the 3.1 wt.% Au/D-72(SMAI) and 3.1 wt.% Au/TiO2(CI). Although the sizes of gold particles prepared by the same method and supported on both TiO2 and resin were comparable, the Au/TiO2 catalysts showed significantly higher activities than the Au/resin catalysts with the same Au contents under the same reaction conditions. These results prove that not only the gold particle size, but also the support plays a key role in CO oxidation. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Nanocatalysts containing platinum and palladium clusters have been synthesized on the basis of detonation nanodiamond, cubic silicon carbide, and titanium dioxide. Characteristic size of the Pt cluster was close to 4 nm on both nanodiamond (particle size 5 nm) and β-SiC (particle size 13 nm) supports. The catalysts show high catalytic activity in reactions of CO oxidation and photocatalytic oxidation of ethanol at room temperature and low concentrations (<100 mg m3). They are promising in photocatalytic air purification systems for domestic use.

Knowledge of the reaction mechanism is key for rational catalyst improvement. Traditionally mechanistic studies focus on structure and the reaction conditions like temperature, pH, pressure, etc., whereas the time dimension is often overlooked. Here, we demonstrate the influence of time on the mechanism of a catalytic reaction. A dual catalytic mechanism was identified for the CO oxidation over Au/TiO2 by time-resolved infrared spectroscopy coupled with modulation excitation spectroscopy. During the first seconds, CO on the gold particles is the only reactive species. As the reaction proceeds, the redox properties of TiO2 dominate the catalytic activity through electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI). CO induces the reduction and reconstruction of TiO2 whereas oxygen leads to its oxidation. The activity of the catalyst follows the spectroscopic signature of the EMSI. These findings demonstrate the power of studying short-time kinetics for mechanistic studies.

The discovery that gold catalysts could be active for CO oxidation at cryogenic temperatures has ignited much excitement in nanocatalysis. Whether the alternative Pt group metal (PGM) catalysts can exhibit such high performance is an interesting research issue. So far, no PGM catalyst shows activity for CO oxidation at cryogenic temperatures. In this work, we report a sub‐nano Rh/TiO2 catalyst that can completely convert CO at 223 K. This catalyst exhibits at least three orders of magnitude higher turnover frequency (TOF) than the best Rh‐based catalysts and comparable to the well‐known Au/TiO2 for CO oxidation. The specific size range of 0.4–0.8 nm Rh clusters is critical to the facile activation of O2 over the Rh–TiO2 interface in a form of Rh?O?O?Ti (superoxide). This superoxide is ready to react with the CO adsorbed on TiO2 sites at cryogenic temperatures.

(Mn1 ? x M x )O2 (M = Co, Pd) materials synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and dried at 80°C have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and adsorption and have been tested in CO oxidation under CO + O2 TPR conditions and under isothermal conditions at room temperature in the absence and presence of water vapor. The synthesized materials have the tunnel structure of cryptomelane irrespective of the promoter nature and content. Their specific surface area is 110–120 m2/g. MnO2 is morphologically uniform, and the introduction of cobalt or palladium into this oxide disrupts its uniformity and causes the formation of more or less crystallized aggregates varying in size. The (Mn,Pd)O2 composition contains Pd metal, which is in contact with the MnO2-based oxide phase. The average size of the palladium particles is no larger than 12 nm. The initial activity of the materials in CO oxidation, which was estimated in terms of the 10% CO conversion temperature, increases in the following order: MnO2 (100°C) < (Mn,Co)O2 (98°C) < (Mn,Co,Pd)O2 (23°C) < (Mn,Pd)O2 (?12°C). The high activity of (Mn,Pd)O2 is due to its surface containing palladium in two states, namely, oxidized palladium (interaction phase) palladium metal (clusters). The latter are mainly dispersed in the MnO2 matrix. This catalyst is effective in CO oxidation even at room temperature when there is no water vapor in the reaction mixture, but it is inactive in the presence of water vapor. Water vapor causes partial reduction of Mn4+ ions and an increase in the proportion of palladium metal clusters.

The catalytic activity of low-percentage Co,Pd systems on ZSM-5, ERI, SiO2, and Al2O3 supports in the oxidation of CO was studied. The activity of bimetal-containing catalysts was shown to depend on the nature of the catalyst and the amount and ratio of their active components. According to the results of thermoprogrammed reduction with H2 (H2 TPR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data, the metals are distributed as isolated cations or Coδ+-O-Pdδ+ clusters with cobalt and palladium cations surrounded by off-lattice oxygen in Co,Pd systems. The 0.8% Co,0.5% Pd-ZSM-5 bimetal catalysts were found to be more active due to the presence of clusters.

By means of density functional theory computations, we examine the stability and CO oxidation activity of single Ru on CeO2(111), TiO2(110) and Al2O3(001) surfaces. The heterogeneous system Ru1/CeO2 has very high stability, as indicated by the strong binding energies and high diffusion barriers of a single Ru atom on the ceria support, while the Ru atom is rather mobile on TiO2(110) and Al2O3(001) surfaces and tends to form clusters, excluding these systems from having a high efficiency per Ru atom. The Ru1/CeO2 exhibits good catalytic activity for CO oxidation via the Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanism, thus is a promising single‐atom catalyst.

Semiconductor TiO2 particles loaded with WO3 (WO3/TiO2), synthesized by impregnation of tungstic acid followed by calcination, were used for photocatalytic oxidation of alcohols in water with molecular oxygen under irradiation at λ>350 nm. The WO3/TiO2 catalysts promote selective oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes and show higher catalytic activity than pure TiO2. In particular, a catalyst loading 7.6 wt % WO3 led to higher aldehyde selectivity than previously reported photocatalytic systems. The high aldehyde selectivity arises because subsequent photocatalytic decomposition of the formed aldehyde is suppressed on the catalyst. The TiO2 surface of the catalyst, which is active for oxidation, is partially coated by the WO3 layer, which leads to a decrease in the amount of formed aldehyde adsorbed on the TiO2 surface. This suppresses subsequent decomposition of the aldehyde on the TiO2 surface and results in high aldehyde selectivity. The WO3/TiO2 catalyst can selectively oxidize various aromatic alcohols and is reusable without loss of catalytic activity or selectivity.

Samples of Pd/C and Pd–Ag/C, where C represents carbon nanofibers (CNFs), are synthesized by methane decomposition on a Ni–Cu–Fe/Al2O3 catalyst. The properties of Pd/CNF are studied in the reaction of selective hydrogenation of acetylene into ethylene. It is found that the activity of the catalyst in hydrogenation reaction increases, while selectivity decreases considerably when the palladium content rises. The obtained dependences are caused by the features of palladium’s interaction with the carbon support. At a low Pd content (up to 0.04 wt %) in the catalyst, the metal is inserted into the interlayer space of graphite and the catalytic activity is zero. It is established by EXAFS that the main share of palladium in catalysts of 0.05–0.1 wt % Pd/CNF constitutes the metal in the atomically dispersed state. The coordination environment of palladium atoms consists of carbon atoms. An increase in the palladium content in a Pd/CNF catalyst up to 0.3 wt % leads to the formation of highly dispersed (0.8–1 nm) Pd particles. The Pd/CNF samples where palladium is mainly in the atomically dispersed state exhibit the highest selectivity in the acetylene hydrogenation reaction. The addition of silver to a 0.1 wt % Pd/CNF catalyst initially probably leads to the formation of Pd–Ag clusters and then to alloyed Pd–Ag particles. An increase in the silver content in the catalyst above 0.3% causes the enlargement of the alloyed particles and the palladium atoms are blocked by a silver layer, which considerably decreases the catalytic activity in the selective hydrogenation of acetylene.

In order to obtain highly active catalytic materials for oxidation of carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), monometallic platinum, copper, and palladium catalysts were prepared by using of two types of ZSM-5 zeolite as supports—parent ZSM-5 and the same one treated by HF and NH4F buffer solution. The catalyst samples, obtained by loading of platinum, palladium, and copper on ZSM-5 zeolite treated using HF and NH4F buffer solution, were more active in the reaction of CO and benzene oxidation compared with catalyst samples containing untreated zeolite. The presence of secondary mesoporosity played a positive role in increasing the catalytic activity due to improved reactant diffusion. The only exception was the copper catalysts in the reaction of CO oxidation, in which case the catalyst, based on untreated ZSM-5 zeolite, was more active. In this specific case, the key role is played by the oxidative state of copper species loaded on the ZSM-5 zeolites.

We report on bimetallic FeRh clusters with a narrow size-distribution grown on graphene on Ir(111) as a carbon-supported model catalyst to promote low-temperature catalytic CO oxidation. By combining scanning tunneling microscopy with catalytic performance measurements, we reveal that Fe−Rh interfaces are active sites for oxygen activation and CO oxidation, especially at low temperatures. Rh core Fe shell clusters not only provide the active sites for the reaction, but also thermally stabilize surface Fe atoms towards coarsening compared with pure Fe clusters. Alternate isotope-labelled CO/O2 pulse experiments show opposite trends on preferential oxidation (PROX) performance because of surface hydroxyl species formation and competitive adsorption between CO and O2. The present results introduce a general strategy to stabilize metallic clusters and to reveal the reaction mechanisms on bimetallic structures for low-temperature catalytic CO oxidation as well as preferential oxidation.

Results of structural refinements and catalytic evaluation of a series of palladium supported ceria-zirconia synthesized through a surfactant-assisted technique were reported. It was found that zirconium addition to ceria leads to a crystalline structure distortion and inhibits the crystal growth at high temperature. Rietveld refinements confirm that all the ceria-zirconia samples have nanocrystals with cationic defects in their structures. The Pd-supported catalysts were very active for both CO and propane complete oxidation. The best catalyst 3wt%Pd/Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 has a light-off temperature (T 50) as low as 120°C for CO oxidation and 180°C for C3H8 combustion.

Two Au catalysts supported on TiO2 were prepared by impregnation method followed by sodium borohydride reduction or calcination in air (Au/TiO2-R and Au/TiO2-C, respectively). The 1 wt % Au/TiO2-R sample was found to be highly efficient for the oxidation of low concentrated formaldehyde at room temperature. A HCHO conversion of 98.5% was achieved with this catalyst, whereas the Au/TiO2-C sample showed almost no activity under the same conditions. Highly dispersed metallic Au nanoparticles with small size (∼3.5 nm) were identified in the 1 wt % Au/TiO2-R catalyst. A significant negative shift of Au4f peak in XPS spectra with respect to bulk metallic Au was observed for the 1 wt % Au/TiO2-R but no similar phenomena was found for the heat-treated catalyst. More Au nanoparticles and higher content of surface active oxygen were identified on the surface of the Au/TiO2-R in comparison with the Au/TiO2-C, suggesting that the Au/TiO2-R catalyst can enhance the amount of active sites and species involved in for HCHO oxidation. The reduction treatment by sodium borohydride promotes the formation of dispersed metallic Au nanoparticles with small size because it facilitates the electron transfer and increases the content of surface Au nanoparticles and activated oxygen. All these factors are responsible for a high activity of this catalyst in the oxidation of HCHO.

Controlling the structure and properties of catalysts through atomic arrangement is the source of producing a new generation of advanced catalysts. A highly active and stable catalyst in catalytic reactions strongly depends on an ideal arrangement structure of metal atoms. We demonstrated that the introduction of the defect-rich structures, low coordination number (CN), and tensile strain in three-dimensional (3D) urchin-like palladium nanoparticles through chlorine bonded with sp-C in graphdiyne (Pd-UNs/Cl-GDY) can regulate the arrangement of metal atoms in the palladium nanoparticles to form a special structure. In situ Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and theoretical calculation results show that Pd-UNs/Cl-GDY catalyst is beneficial to the oxidation and removal of CO intermediates. The Pd-UNs/Cl-GDY for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) that display high current density (363.6 mA cm−2) and mass activity (3.6 A mgPd−1), 12.0 and 10.9 times higher than Pd nanoparticles, respectively. The Pd-UNs/Cl-GDY catalyst also exhibited robust stability with still retained 95 % activity after 2000 cycles. A defects libraries of the face-centered cubic and hexagonal close-packed crystal catalysts (FH-NPs) were synthesized by introducing chlorine in graphdiyne. Such defect-rich structures, low CN, and tensile strain tailoring methods have opened up a new way for the catalytic reaction of MOR.

Pd-based catalysts are the most widely used for CO oxidation because of their outstanding catalytic activity and thermal stability. However, fundamental understanding of the detailed catalytic processes occurring on Pd-based catalysts under realistic conditions is still lacking. In this study, we investigated CO oxidation on metallic Pd clusters supported on Al2O3 and SiO2. High-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy revealed the formation of similar-sized Pd clusters on Al2O3 and SiO2. In contrast, CO chemisorption analysis indicated a gradual change in the dispersion of Pd (from 0.79 to 0.2) on Pd/Al2O3 and a marginal change in the dispersion (from 0.4 to 0.24) on Pd/SiO2 as the Pd loading increased from 0.27 to 5.5 wt %; these changes were attributed to differences in the metal-support interactions. Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy revealed that fewer a-top CO species were present in Pd supported on Al2O3 than those in Pd supported on SiO2, which is related to the morphological differences in the metallic Pd clusters on these two supports. Despite the different dispersion profiles and surface characteristics of Pd, O2 titration demonstrated that linearly bound CO (with an infrared signal at 2090 cm−1) reacted first with oxygen in the case of CO-saturated Pd on Al2O3 and SiO2, which suggests that a-top CO on the terrace site plays an important role in CO oxidation. The experimental observations were corroborated by periodic density functional calculations, which confirmed that CO oxidation on the (111) terrace sites is most plausible, both kinetically and thermodynamically, compared to that on the edge or corner sites. This study will deepen the fundamental understanding of the effect of Pd clusters on CO oxidation under reaction conditions.

We studied the effects of the composition of impregnating solution and heat treatment conditions on the activity of catalytic systems for the low-temperature oxidation of CO obtained by the impregnation of Busofit carbon-fiber cloth with aqueous solutions of palladium, copper, and iron salts. The formation of an active phase in the synthesized catalysts at different stages of their preparation was examined with the use of differential thermal and thermogravimetric analyses, X-ray diffraction analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and elemental spectral analysis. The catalytic system prepared by the impregnation of electrochemically treated Busofit with the solutions of PdCl2, FeCl3, CuBr2, and Cu(NO3)2 and activated under optimum conditions ensured 100% CO conversion under a respiratory regime at both low (0.03%) and high (0.5%) carbon monoxide contents of air. It was found that the activation of a catalytic system at elevated temperatures (170–180°C) leads to the conversion of Pd(II) into Pd(I), which was predominantly localized in a near-surface layer. The promoting action of copper nitrate consists in the formation of a crystalline phase of the rhombic atacamite Cu2Cl(OH)3. The catalyst surface is finally formed under the conditions of a catalytic reaction, when a joint Pd(I)-Cu(I) active site is formed.
