ABSTRACT

Nonlinear optical materials (NLO) have been garnering attention due to their role in optical data storage, optical communication and laser technology. Organic crystals have emerged as an extremely important class of NLO materials, since their NLO properties compare very well with traditional inorganic NLO materials like KCl, LiNbO3, KDP (potassium dihydrogen phosphate), etc. They offer the additional advantage that they can be grown relatively inexpensively from solution close to room temperature, unlike the inorganic NLO materials which are grown from high temperature melts. In the present work, organic transparent single crystals of methyl para-hydroxy benzoate (MHB) were grown by slow evaporation solution growth technique (SEST) from aqueous solution at room temperature. The changes in structural, electrical and optical properties of gamma irradiated MHB single crystals were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–Visible absorption spectroscopy, Photo-luminescence (PL), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and AC conductivity measurements at room temperature. The polished MHB single crystals were irradiated with gamma rays of doses 10 and 15 kilogray (kGy). From the XRD analysis, it was observed that gamma irradiation for these doses drastically decreases the crystallinity. The optical absorption constants were examined by UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy, measured over the wavelength range of 200–800?nm, at normal incidence. The optical band gap as estimated from the Tauc plot ((αhν)2 vs hν) was found to be reduced with increasing gamma irradiation doses. PL spectra showed emission at wavelengths of 361?nm (3.43?eV) and 452?nm (2.74?eV), with enhanced intensities for the irradiated crystals. FTIR spectroscopy was utilised to identify the functional groups of MHB and indicated the rupture of specific types of bonds with gamma irradiation. Apart from that, the enhancement of AC conductivity with gamma irradiation was also observed for the gamma irradiated crystals.  相似文献

In the current research investigation, polycarbonate/hallyosite nanotubes (PC/HNTs) nanocomposite (NC) films have been successfully fabricated by solution intercalation technique using ultrasound energy in facile way which helps complete exfoliation of the HNTs in the matrix. The effect of Gamma irradiation-induced modifications of PC/HNTs NC have been studied in the dose range 200–500?kGy, irradiated with Co60 source. The NC films have been evaluated by UV–visible spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopic techniques in order to probe the effect of gamma radiation on the structural behaviors. The obtained results have been indicated that as the Gamma irradiation dosage increases from 200 to 500?kGy, phenolic group forms through scissoring of ester link of PC, which may cause PC to degrade and lose their property. At lower dosage (200?kGy), the effect is less and at higher dosage (500?kGy), the effect is significant and at 300 and 400?kGy, the effect is moderate and NC films retained their properties. The irradiation effect is most significant and effective at the higher dosage range. UV–visible spectroscopy shows a noticeable reduction in the energy band gap due to gamma irradiation.  相似文献

The effects of gamma rays were studied on the optical, structural and chemical properties of the PA-66 polymer samples. The polymer samples obtained from Goodfellow (Cambridge, UK) were irradiated with gamma rays at various doses ranging from 100 to 1250 kGy. The pristine and gamma rays irradiated samples were characterized by UV–visible (UV–VIS) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. UV–VIS shows a shift in absorption toward the visible region for irradiated samples and a decrease in band gap energy (Eg). The XRD analyses show an increase in the crystalline nature of the polymer at higher doses as a result of significant decrease in the peak width of XRD patterns. The FTIR spectra show decrease in intensity and shift of various bands with increase in gamma dose.  相似文献

The effect of an 8 MeV electron-beam on the structural, optical and dielectric properties of polystyrene films has been investigated respectively by means of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible (UV–VIS) spectroscopy and electrical impedance (LCR) analysis over a radiation dose in the range of 50–250 kGy using a Microtron accelerator. The FTIR spectral analysis shows no change in the overall structure of the irradiated polystyrene films, except a minor change in the intensity of a few peaks in the FTIR spectrum, indicating that polystyrene is resistant to electron-beam irradiation over the range of radiation doses investigated. The optical band gap analysis using the UV–VIS absorption spectra of the polystyrene shows a small decrease in the optical band gap (E g) and the activation energy with an increase in electron doses. Further, the dielectric measurements over a frequency range of 100 Hz to 1 MHz for the electron-beam-irradiated polystyrene films show that both the dielectric constant and the dielectric loss increase with an increase in electron radiation dose, which may be ascribed to the formation of defect sites in the band gap of polystyrene as a consequence of molecular chain scission in the polymer films upon irradiation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

For a comprehensive understanding of the PVA/CdS nanocomposite properties, it is essential to select the suitable method for their preparation as well as elucidate the interfacial interactions, which still need support. CdS nanoparticles have been prepared by thermolysis method under the flow of nitrogen. Rietveld refinement of x-ray data shows that all the CdS samples have both cubic and hexagonal structures. Then PVA/CdS films were prepared by ex-situ technique. Samples from PVA/CdS nanocomposite have been irradiated with gamma doses in the range 10–120?kGy. The implanting of CdS NPs into PVA matrix was confirmed by XRD hand in hand with UV–vis and FTIR spectroscopic techniques. UV/VIS absorption spectra confirm the formation of hybridized film CdS/PVA nanocomposite with a refractive index in the range of 1.32–1.48 (at 500?nm). UV/VIS measurements were also used in calculating different optical parameters such as refractive index, extinction coefficient and optical band gap energy. Additionally, Tauc’s relation was used to determine the type of electronic transition. It is found that the gamma irradiation in the dose range 30-90?kGy led to a more compact structure of PVA/CdS nanocomposite and causes proper dispersion of CdS nanoparticles in the PVA matrix. This led to the formation of coordination reaction between OH of PVA and CdS nanoparticles, resulted in an increase in refractive index and the amorphous phase. Also, the gamma irradiation reduces the optical energy gap from 4.53 to 2.19?eV, and accompanied with an increase in the Urbach energy from 2.28 to 4.46?eV, at that dose range which could be attributed to the increase in structural disorder of the irradiated PVA/CdS nanocomposites due to crosslinking. Further, the color intensity ΔE, which is the color difference between the non-irradiated sample and the irradiated ones, was increased, from 0 to 10.8, with increasing the gamma dose, convoyed by an increase in the red and yellow color components.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

ZnTe (Zinc Telluride) is a potential semiconducting material for many optoelectronic devices like solar cells and back contact material for CdTe-based solar cells. In the present study, ZnTe thin films were prepared by thermal evaporation technique and then irradiated with 120?MeV Si9+ ions at different fluences. These films are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV–Visible spectroscopy techniques. XRD study confirms increased crystallinity and grain growth for post-irradiated ZnTe thin films for fluences, up to 1?×?1011 ions cm?2. However, the grain size and crystallinity decreased for higher fluence-exposed samples. SEM images confirm the observed structural properties. Modification of the surface morphology of the film due to the ion irradiation with different fluences is studied. Optical band gap of film is decreased from 2.31?eV (pristine) to 2.17?eV after irradiation of Si9+ ions.  相似文献

The present study focuses on the effects of gamma irradiation on structural and optical properties of polycrystalline Ga10Se85Sn5 thin films with a thickness of ~300?nm deposited by the thermal evaporation technique on cleaned glass substrates. X-ray diffraction patterns of the investigated thin films show that crystallite growth occurs in the orthorhombic phase structure. The surface study carried out by using the scanning electron microscope (SEM) confirms that the grain size increases with gamma irradiation. The optical parameters were estimated from optical transmission spectra data measured from a UV–vis-spectrophotometer in the wavelength range of 200–1100?nm. The refractive index dispersion data of the investigated thin films follow the single oscillator model. The estimated values of static refractive index n0, oscillator strength Ed, zero frequency dielectric constant ε0, optical conductivity σoptical and the dissipation factor increases after irradiation, while the single oscillator energy Eo decreases after irradiation. It was found that the value of the optical band gap of the investigated thin films decreases and the corresponding absorption coefficient increases continuously with an increase in the dose of gamma irradiation. This post irradiation changes in the values of optical band gap and absorption coefficient were interpreted in terms of the bond distribution model.  相似文献

The UV–Visible, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of undoped lead phosphate and MoO3-doped glassy samples have been investigated. The UV–VIS absorption spectra were re-measured after successive gamma irradiation. Before irradiation, undoped sample exhibited strong ultraviolet absorption, which was attributed to co-absorption due to trace iron impurities (mainly Fe3+ ions) and lead Pb2+ ions. With the introduction of MoO3 in progressive amounts, extra visible bands were recorded at about 400–440, 540, 750 and 870?nm. These bands are most likely correlated with the presence of Mo3+, Mo4+ and Mo5+ ions in the host glass. In the undoped specimen, gamma irradiation produced UV absorption bands that increased slightly with irradiation but no visible bands were recorded. Samples containing high MoO3 content showed some resistance to irradiation with no bands in the visible region being observed. FTIR absorption spectra of the undoped and MoO3-doped samples revealed the formation of metaphosphate and pyrophosphate structural units. Highly MoO3-doped samples exhibited additional bands due to molybdate groups. Raman and ESR spectra were in agreement with UV–VIS and IR data, indicating the presence of molybdenum ions in lead phosphate glass, as Mo3+, Mo4+ and Mo6+ with different ratios. However, such glassy systems favor the trivalent species.  相似文献

The influence of 8 MeV electron beam irradiation on the structural and optical properties of silver tungstate (α-Ag2WO4) nanoparticles synthesized by chemical precipitation method was investigated. The dose dependent effect of electron irradiation was investigated by various characterization techniques such as, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, UV–vis absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy. Systematic studies confirm that electron beam irradiation induces non-stoichiometry, defects and particle size variation on α-Ag2WO4, which in turn results changes in optical band gap, photoluminescence spectra and Raman bands.  相似文献

Single phase perovskite LaFeO3 nanoparticles are directly synthesized by a one-step microwave-assisted route without additional high temperature calcination process. The prepared sample is characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning microscope (FE-SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) specific surface area measurement, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). XRD and SEM show that the prepared LaFeO3 is single phase perovskite and sphere-like shape. The DRS result shows that the prepared LaFeO3 has strong visible-light absorption and an optical absorption onset of 525 nm, corresponding to an optical band gap of 2.36 eV. The photocatalytic experiment demonstrates that LaFeO3 is highly visible-light photocatalytic active for the degradation of methylene blue. It is suggested that the narrow band gap and the strong visible-light absorption are responsible for the high visible-light photocatalytic activity of the prepared LaFeO3.  相似文献

The structural and optical properties of thin films of polyimide composites with nanosilica particle content of 15?wt%, prepared via sol–gel process, were studied as a function of the gamma dose. The resultant effect of gamma irradiation on the properties of polyimide/silica nanocomposite has been investigated using X-ray diffraction and UV spectroscopy. Absorption and reflectance spectra were collected by a spectrophotometer giving UV-radiation of wavelength range 200–800?nm. The optical data obtained were analyzed and the calculated values of the optical energy gap exhibited gamma dose dependence. The direct optical energy gap for the nonirradiated polyimide/silica nanocomposite is about 2.41?eV, and increases to a value of 2.65?eV when irradiated with gamma doses up to 300?kGy. It was found that the calculated refractive index of the polyamide/silica increases with the gamma dose in the range 50–300?kGy.  相似文献

A comparative study of two different particle sizes of ferroelectric barium titanate (BaTiO3) nanoparticles as a dopant on the molecular structure, spontaneous polarization and dielectric behavior of a pure ferroelectric liquid crystal 6F6T have been studied. It has been found that there is a remarkable decrease in isotropic temperature of both doped samples as compared to the pure 6F6T sample. The spontaneous polarization also decreases for both the doped samples and the reduction is more pronounced in case of the dopant with large particle size. The dielectric spectroscopy confirms the presence of soft mode as well as Goldstone mode and also shows the decrease in the value of dielectric permittivity ?' as a function of frequency for both doped samples. The improvised properties of liquid crystal host doped with BaTiO3 nanoparticles mainly depend upon the synthesis method of nanoparticles and also upon the particle size of dopant.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Samples from sheets of the polymeric material Makrofol LS 1–1 have been exposed to gamma radiation in the dose range 10–250?kGy. The modifications induced in Makrofol samples due to gamma irradiation have been studied through different characterization techniques such as intrinsic viscosity as a measure of the average molecular mass, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy FTIR, refractive index and color difference studies. The results indicate that the crosslinking dominates at the dose range 50–250?kGy. The crosslinking reported by viscosity measurements is supported by the trend of the function groups present in the sample with the gamma dose. Also, the increase in intrinsic viscosity indicating an increase in the average molecular mass was associated with an increase in the refractive index. Additionally, the non-irradiated Makrofol samples showed significant color sensitivity towards gamma irradiation. The color intensity ΔE, which is the color difference between the non-irradiated sample and those irradiated with different gamma doses, increased (0–5.56) with increasing the dose up to 250?kGy, convoyed by an increase in the red and yellow color components.  相似文献

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles were synthesized directly by injecting gas-phase titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) bubbled with a mixture of Ar and SO2 into a 2.45 GHz microwave torch plasma operated in O2 gas at atmospheric pressure. The absorption edge of the as-produced TiO2 powders in the UV–Visible spectrum shifted from 457 nm to 483 nm as the SO2 gas content in the mixture gas carrying the TiCl4 was increased. According to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV–Visible spectroscopy, the band gap narrowing was due to the incorporation of sulphur (S) species from the Ar and SO2 mixture in the oxygen microwave torch plasma into the O site of TiO2.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Cerium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG: Ce3+) nanopowder phosphors have been elaborated by sol–gel process and annealed at 900°C for 2?h. The prepared phosphors were exposed to gamma radiation, using 60Co source, at different doses ranging from 5 to 100?kGy. The influence of γ-irradiation on the structural, morphological and luminescence properties of YAG: Ce3+ phosphors were investigated in detail by X-ray diffraction, ?eld emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and photoluminescence measurements. The XRD analysis confirmed the presence of single cubic phase for all samples of YAG: Ce3+ nanophosphors independent of γ-rays dose. FESEM micrograph results revealed that the particles present flate-like shapes and high density of dislocation for sample irradiated at 100?kGy of γ-ray. The YAG: Ce3+ nanophosphors showed broad green–yellow emission band in the range of 450–700?nm with maximum intensity at 538?nm assigned to the 5d → 4f transitions of Ce3+ ion. The emission intensity of YAG: Ce3+ phosphors vary with the γ-ray irradiation and reach the maximum for sample irradiated to a dose of 25?kGy. The variation of luminescence intensity is related to the crystallite size and Ce4+ ions content in YAG host nanomaterial.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Blend of polyethylene oxide (PEO)/starch (70/30 wt.%) filled with different amounts of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were prepared using the casting technique. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) techniques were used to investigate the structure of polymeric samples before and after exposing to gamma irradiation at different times. XRD showed a gradual decrease in intensity of crystalline peaks with increasing the gamma dose denotes a decrease in the amount of crystalline phase in the films, while the FTIR measurement shows induced changes in chemical structure assigned to the AuNPs amount and irradiation times. The optical energy gap values (Eg) for unirradiated and irradiated samples were calculated and interpreted. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) which showed the miscibility between the two components of the blend. The electrical conductivity (σ) measurement was showed increased in electrical conductivity after exposure to the gamma dose. The gold nanoparticles were used as nano?ller to improve the structural and electrical properties of polymeric samples. The results showed the Gamma irradiation significantly effect on the structural and electrical properties of PEO/starch blend.  相似文献

We have performed first principles calculations of Fe-doped BaTiO3 and SrTiO3. Dopant formation energy, structure distortion, band structure and density of states have been computed. The dopant formation energy is found to be 6.8eV and 6.5eV for Fe-doped BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 respectively. The distances between Fe impurity and its nearest O atoms and between Fe atom and Ba or Sr atoms are smaller than those of the corresponding undoped bulk systems. The Fe defect energy band is obtained, which mainly originates from Fe 3d electrons. The band gap is still an indirect one after Fe doping for both BaTiO3 and SrWiO3, but the gap changes from Γ-R point to Γ-X point.  相似文献

Metallodielectric (gold@silica) composites were prepared by seed and grow method. The dielectric microspheres (core material) of an average size of 400 nm were synthesized by sol–gel method and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were prepared by reducing the chloroauric solution. Shell growth around silica (SiO2) microspheres was carried out in a multistep layer-by-layer process. The synthesized composites were characterized using techniques such as field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV–Visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy. FE-SEM and FTIR analyses have confirmed the functionalization of SiO2 surfaces with the amine terminal group along with the gold shell growth. XRD analysis has given an average crystallite size of 12.3 nm for metallodielectric composites. Absorption spectra have demonstrated the dependence of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak on the successive shell growth by exhibiting a red shift.  相似文献

In this research, Fe-doped TiO2 nanoparticles with various Fe concentrations (0. 0.1, 1, 5 and 10 wt%) were prepared by a sol–gel method. Then, nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), BET surface area, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The photocatalytic activity of the nano-particles was evaluated through degradation of reactive red 198 (RR 198) under UV and visible light irradiations. XRD results revealed that all samples contained only anatase phase. DRS showed that the Fe doping in the titania induced a significant red shift of the absorption edge and then the band gap energy decreased from 3 to 2.1 eV. Photocatalytic results indicated that TiO2 had a highest photocatalytic decolorization of the RR 198 under UV irradiation whereas photocatalytic decolorization of the RR 198 under visible irradiation increased in the presence of Fe-doped TiO2 nanoparticles. Among the samples, Fe-1 wt% doped TiO2 nanoparticles showed the highest photocatalytic decolorization of RR198 under visible light irradiation.  相似文献

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to measure the valence band offset of the ZnO/BaTiO3 heterojunction grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. The valence band offset (VBO) is determined to be 0.48±0.09 eV, and the conduction band offset (CBO) is deduced to be about 0.75 eV using the band gap of 3.1 eV for bulk BaTiO3. It indicates that a type-II band alignment forms at the interface, in which the valence and conduction bands of ZnO are concomitantly higher than those of BaTiO3. The accurate determination of VBO and CBO is important for use of semiconductor/ferroelectric heterojunction multifunctional devices.  相似文献
