Selective fluorescence labelling of oxidized cellulose functionalities followed by GPC-MALLS was used to get a deeper insight into ink-induced degradation processes. As the method is very sensitive towards oxidation and molecular weight changes, slight variations at the very beginning of aging processes, e.g. during ink corrosion of cellulose, can be studied. Five different ink modifications were applied on model papers and underwent mild accelerated aging at 55 °C and cycling humidity (7 days) followed by a short period of static humid aging at 80 °C (2 days). Pure ink constituents like tannic acid or iron sulphate do not result in the same degree of oxidation or chain scission as complete inks. Balanced ink degrades paper more than single compounds, but less than unbalanced inks. Interestingly, some degradation occurs already during or shortly after the application process of unbalanced inks on paper. It could be demonstrated that this oxidation proceeded in a rather high Mw area, while the subsequent aging steps affected predominantly regions of shorter cellulose chains.  相似文献

Ion-pairing high performance liquid chromatography (IP-HPLC) was utilized to monitor the composition changes of blue gel pen ink entries on paper stored in different light conditions and natural environment. The chromatographic conditions were optimized by comparing the separation efficiencies of the blue gel pen inks using a series of ion-pairing reagents, including ammonium carbonate, ammonium acetate, triethylamine acetate, tributylamine acetate, tetrabutylammonium bromide and dihexylammonium acetate. It has been found that tributylamine acetate was a suitable ion-pairing reagent for separation of the inks on the common C18 column. The analysis results of the ink entries on paper in different aging conditions showed that the tendency of composition change in natural aging condition was similar with those in fluorescent light and UV light conditions, respectively. One main component dye of the blue gel pen ink, Acid Blue 9, and its degradation products were identified by ion-pairing high performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray tandem mass spectrometry. The results showed that the main degradation products originated from the Acid Blue 9. It gave a reasonable explanation for the changing rules of the relative content of the dyes in the blue gel pen ink. The results obtained can provide scientific evidences for dating of the blue gel pen ink entries on documents.  相似文献

Iron gall ink, also referred to as iron gallotannate ink, is one of the most important inks in the history of western civilisation, and was in widespread use from the middle ages until the 20th century. Unfortunately, iron ions and acids present in these inks induce enhanced degradation of paper, thus severely damaging numerous historical artefacts. Yet, when examining documents, it is frequently observed that not all materials containing iron gall ink are suffering from ink corrosion. While some are completely destroyed, others may be in excellent condition even centuries after their creation. In order to establish the main properties of materials, common to severely degraded documents, the effects of the type and quantity of metal ions in the ink, as determined by in-air PIXE method, pH of the ink on paper, grammage of paper, its absorptivity and the width of ink lines were evaluated against the extent of corrosion. Using multiple linear regression analysis, a correlation has been obtained between the width of the applied ink lines, pH, grammage of paper and the extent of ink corrosion. Based on these factors, which can be acquired non-destructively from most historical documents, it is therefore possible to predict the stability of historical iron gall ink containing paper.

Determination of the age of a handwritten or ink printed questioned document can be an important consideration in forensic cases. Most often the age of a document is determined by the chemical behavior of the dyes that make up the ink. Exposure of the dyes to environmental factors such as oxygen and ultraviolet or visible light cause them to degrade. Often this degradation can be correlated to the time since the exposure of the ink to the elements began. A number of methods have been used to track the aging of inks on paper. This paper reports the use of laser desorption mass spectrometry as a valuable tool in not only elucidating the structures of dyes used in inks but tracking the change in their chemistry as they age. This study also explores methods for artificially aging documents using ultraviolet and visible light.  相似文献

A novel approach for classification and dating of the black gel pen ink entries on document was developed based on ion-pairing high-performance liquid chromatography (IP-HPLC). Ninety-three black gel pens were collected and divided into two groups, dye-based and pigment-based, by preliminary solubility test. The chromatographic conditions for separation of the dye-based black gel pen inks were optimized and the dye components in inks were satisfactorily separated by using 40 mmol/L tetrabutylammonium bromide as ion-pairing reagent. According to the number and the chromatographic retention times of the main dye components, the 50 dye-based inks were categorized into four classes. The inks within a class can be further identified by the percentage of each dye component. The compositional changes of the dye components in the black gel pen ink entries on paper were investigated in light and natural aging conditions and it has been found that the dye components in the ink entries underwent obvious decomposition, and the decomposing extent of the dye components was related to the aging time. The results can provide scientific evidences for dating of the suspicious black gel pen ink entries on documents.  相似文献

A set of inks was analyzed using Py/GC/MS technique. They were prepared following some ancient Armenian recipes and then analyzed after being dried in air to obtain solid samples. A simple analytical procedure was adopted which excludes any treatment of the samples and consists in introducing the solid sample directly into the injector of the furnace pyrolyzer. Inks were also written on whatman paper by calamum and analyses of papers containing ink were carried out. A real sample analysis was reported. Comparing the pyrograms it was possible to discriminate fragments derived from ink, from that formed by the decomposition of paper by the influence of ink. In order to understand the origin of the fragments formed during the pyrolysis of inks the standard compounds used to prepare them were carried out, too.  相似文献

Museums, libraries and archives are preserving documents that are slowly degrading due to the inherent ageing of the cellulose substrate or to the technological errors of the past (acid paper, iron gall ink). Beside this, large quantities of paper are rapidly damaged by biological attacks following natural disasters and improper storage conditions. The treatment of paper documents with ionizing radiation can be used for mass decontamination of cultural heritage items but conservators and restaurators are still reserved because of the radiation induced degradation. We conducted a study for establishing the dose needed for the effective treatment of paper documents, taking into account the biological burden and the irradiation effects on paper structure. We used physical testing specific to paper industry and less destructive analytical methods (thermal analysis). Our results show that an effective treatment can be performed with doses lower than 10 kGy. Old paper appears to be less affected by gamma radiation than recent paper but the sampling is highly affected by the non-uniform degree of the initial degradation status. The extent of testing for degradation and the magnitude of acceptable degradation should take into account the biological threat and the expected life time of the paper documents.  相似文献

In the search for alternatives to traditional paint systems solvent-based, the curing process of polymer coatings by ultraviolet light (UV) has been widely studied and discussed, especially because of their high content of solids and null emission of VOC. In UV-curing technology, organic solvents are replaced by reactive diluents, such as monomers. This paper aims to investigate variations on color, gloss and hardness of print inks cured by different UV radiation doses. The ratio pigment/clear coating was kept constant. The clear coating presented higher average values for König hardness than pigmented ones, indicating that UV-light absorption has been reduced by the presence of pigments. Besides, they have indicated a slight variation in function of cure degree for the studied radiation doses range. The gloss loss related to UV light exposition allows inferring that some degradation occurred at the surface of print ink films.  相似文献

Fluorescent photochromism has been applied as an attractive approach for the production of effective authentication substrates to show dual-mode secure encoding. In the current study, novel photochromic and fluorescent nanocomposite ink was developed to introduce a stamped film with strong dual-mode emission for anti-counterfeiting purposes. Inorganic/organic nanocomposite ink was developed from lanthanide-doped aluminate (LDA) dispersed in poly(acrylic acid)-based binder. To produce a transparent film, LDA must be dispersed well in the poly(acrylic acid)-based ink solution. The fluorescent and photochromic nanocomposite ink was stamped effectively onto cellulose documents followed with thermal fixation. Homogeneous fluorescent and photochromic layer was stamped onto paper surface providing a transparent look with the ability to switch to green beneath ultraviolet as illustrated by CIE Lab. The stamped documents were studied by photoluminescence spectra to show an absorption peak at 364 nm, and fluorescence band at 438 nm. The induced security encoding was transparent beneath visible light turning into visible greenish-yellow beneath ultraviolet light indicating a bathochromic shift. LDA was synthesized in the nanoparticle form and characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The morphological properties of the stamped documents were examined by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scan electron microscope (SEM), EDS, and X-ray fluorescence (XRF). The stamped paper sheets displayed an efficiently reversible photochromism without fatigue under visible and ultraviolet lights. The rheologies of the prepared photoluminescent nanocomposite inks as well as the mechanical performance of the stamped sheets were investigated.  相似文献

Security inks based on photoluminescent materials are mostly investigated for security applications, such as information encryption and decryption, anti-counterfeiting, and data storage. Although they are invisible to the naked eye under ambient light, they can be detected under ultraviolet or near-infrared light. Herein, a new kind of secret paper made from network-structured ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowires and cellulose fibers has been developed. White vinegar, a common cooking ingredient, is used as an invisible security ink. Covert information on the secret paper written with white vinegar is totally invisible under natural light, but it can be decrypted and clearly read after exposure to fire; the response time to fire is short (<10 s). The ways of writing on the secret paper are diverse by using various pens loaded with white vinegar.  相似文献

Good jetting performance and pigment‐dispersing stability are necessary for pigment‐based ink‐jet inks. This study investigates how the chemical structures of the polymeric dispersants affect the pigment‐dispersing stability and jetting performance of ink‐jet inks. A series of polymeric dispersants containing styrene (hydrophobic unit) and acrylic acid (hydrophilic unit) with different ratios have been synthesized and used to disperse different pigments. Because 3000–12,000 ink drops can be expelled from the nozzle of a thermal bubble‐type ink‐jet printer within 1 s, the jetting behavior is related to the rheology variation of a dilute solution under a high shear. An in situ drop formation system has been used to study the high‐shear‐rate rheology (dynamic surface tension and dynamic viscosity) of a solution with a viscosity lower than 3 cps, which no commercial rheometer can measure. Excellent ink‐jet inks can only be produced by the combination of pigments, dispersants, and surfactants with appropriate hydrophilicity. Moreover, the correlation of the pigment surface properties, the chemical structures of the polymeric dispersants, and ink formulation is discussed. The effects of the surfactants and firing conditions on the jetting behavior of the ink‐jet ink are also examined. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In situ surface-enhanced resonance Raman spectroscopy (SERRS) with excitation at 685 nm is suitable for the direct discrimination of blue and black ballpoint pen inks on paper. For black inks, shorter excitation wavelengths can also be used. For blue inks, SERRS at 514.5 and 457.9 nm does not provide adequate discriminative power. At these excitation wavelengths, the SERRS signals of the Methyl Violet derivatives present in inks easily dominate the overall spectrum because of resonance enhancement and preferential interaction with silver sol particles. At 685 nm, this problem is not encountered as the Methyl Violet derivatives do not show resonance enhancement, while other components may still exhibit resonance. Thirteen blue and thirteen black ink lines were examined. For the blue and black inks, on the basis of the 685 nm SERR spectra, eight and six groups of spectra, respectively, could be distinguished. This discrimination largely agrees with information from thin layer chromatography (TLC) experiments, although some differences in group compositions are found. The in situ SERR spectra show good repeatability with regard to the Raman frequencies, band shapes and relative intensities of the spectral bands. However, absolute intensities cannot be used for discrimination purposes.  相似文献

Current methods used in document examinations are not suitable to associate or discriminate between sources of paper and gel inks with a high degree of certainty. Nearly non-destructive, laser-based methods using laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) were used to improve the forensic comparisons of gel inks, ballpoint inks and document papers based on similarities in elemental composition. Some of the advantages of these laser-based methods include minimum sample consumption/destruction, high sensitivity, high selectivity and excellent discrimination between samples from different origins. Figures of merit are reported including limits of detection, precision, homogeneity at a micro-scale and linear dynamic range. The variation of the elemental composition in paper was studied within a single sheet, between pages from the same ream, between papers produced by the same plant at different time intervals and between seventeen paper sources produced by ten different plants. The results show that elemental analysis of paper by LIBS and LA-ICP-MS provides excellent discrimination (> 98%) between different sources. Batches manufactured at weekly and monthly intervals in the same mill were also differentiated. The ink of more than 200 black pens was analyzed to determine the variation of the chemical composition of the ink within a single pen, between pens from the same package and between brands of gel inks and ballpoint inks. Homogeneity studies show smaller variation of elemental compositions within a single source than between different sources (i.e. brands and types). It was possible to discriminate between pen markings from different brands and between pen markings from the same brand but different model. Discrimination of ~ 96–99% was achieved for sets that otherwise would remain inseparable by conventional methods. The results show that elemental analysis, using either LA-ICP-MS or LIBS, provides an effective, practical and robust technique for the discrimination of document paper and gel inks with minimum mass removal (9–15 μg) and minimum damage to the document's substrate.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the role and proportional representation of depolymerisation and thermoxidation reaction paths in the systems paper/gum arabic (GA)/historical ink during various accelerated ageing methods. The historical inks under study are iron-gall, bistre, and sepia. The results indicate that thermoxidation represents only a minor reaction path in the ageing of paper/GA/ink systems except for the iron-gall ink and the light-thermal method of accelerated ageing. The iron-gall ink accelerates both reaction paths of ageing, i.e. thermoxidation and depolymerisation; in this case, thermoxidation might become the prevailing degradation reaction path. For the sepia ink, an anti-depolymerisation stabilising effect in thermal methods of ageing has been detected. Considering the thermoxidation reaction path, the results even suggest that a compound preventing thermoxidation is formed during the thermally accelerated ageing in air and in 100 mg L?1 of NO2. In the light-thermal ageing, the most stable sample is the Whatman paper (W)/GA/bistre ink.  相似文献
