The aim of the paper is to give an overview of bifurcation phenomena which are typical for non-smooth dynamical systems. A small number of well-chosen examples of various kinds of non-smooth systems will be presented, followed by a discussion of the bifurcation phenomena in hand and a brief introduction to the mathematical tools which have been developed to study these phenomena. The bifurcations of equilibria in two planar non-smooth continuous systems are analysed by using a generalised Jacobian matrix. A mechanical example of a non-autonomous Filippov system, belonging to the class of differential inclusions, is studied and shows a number of remarkable discontinuous bifurcations of periodic solutions. A generalisation of the Floquet theory is introduced which explains bifurcation phenomena in differential inclusions. Lastly, the dynamics of the Woodpecker Toy is analysed with a one-dimensional Poincaré map method. The dynamics is greatly influenced by simultaneous impacts which cause discontinuous bifurcations.

Equilibrium points, primary and secondary static bifurcation branches, and periodic orbits with their bifurcations of discrete systems under partial follower forces and no initial imperfections are examined. Equilibrium points are computed by solving sets of simultaneous, non-linear algebraic equations, whilst periodic orbits are determined numerically by solving 2- or 4-dimensional non-linear boundary value problems. A specific application is given with Ziegler's 2-DOF cantilever model. Numerous, complicated static bifurcation paths are computed as well as complicated series of periodic orbit bifurcations of relatively large periods. Numerical simulations indicate that chaotic-like transient motions of the system may appear when a forcing parameter increases above the divergence state. At these forcing parameter values, there co-exist numerous branches of bifurcating periodic orbits of the system; it is conjectured that sensitive dependence on initial conditions due to the large number of co-existing periodic orbits causes the chaotic-like transients observed in the numerical simulations.

A variety of border collision bifurcations in a three-dimensional (3D) piecewise smooth chaotic electrical circuit are investigated. The existence and stability of the equilibrium points are analyzed. It is found that there are two kinds of non-smooth fold bifurcations. The existence of periodic orbits is also proved to show the occurrence of non-smooth Hopf bifurcations. As a composite of non-smooth fold and Hopf bifurcations, the multiple crossing bifurcation is studied by the generalized Jacobian matrix. Some interesting phenomena which cannot occur in smooth bifurcations are also considered.

A second-order delay differential equation (DDE) which models certain mechanical and neuromechanical regulatory systems is analyzed. We show that there are points in parameter space for which 1:2 resonant Hopf–Hopf interaction occurs at a steady state of the system. Using a singularity theoretic classification scheme [as presented by LeBlanc (1995) and LeBlanc and Langford (1996)], we then give the bifurcation diagrams for periodic solutions in two cases: variation of the delay and variation of the feedback gain near the resonance point. In both cases, period-doubling bifurcations of periodic solutions occur, and it is argued that two tori can bifurcate from these periodic solutions near the period doubling point. These results are then compared to numerical simulations of the DDE.

We study a well-known regenerative machine tool vibration model (a delay differential equation) near a codimension 2 Hopf bifurcation point. The method of multiple scales is used directly, bypassing a center manifold reduction. We use a nonstandard choice of expansion parameter that helps understand practically relevant aspects of the dynamics for not-too-small amplitudes. Analytical expressions are then obtained for the double Hopf points. Both sub- and supercritical bifurcations are predicted to occur near the reference point; and analytical conditions on the parameter variations for each type of bifurcation to occur are obtained as well. Analytical approximations are supported by numerics.

We consider a delay equation whose delay is perturbed by a small periodic fluctuation. In particular, it is assumed that the delay equation exhibits a Hopf bifurcation when its delay is unperturbed. The periodically perturbed system exhibits more delicate bifurcations than a Hopf bifurcation. We show that these bifurcations are well explained by the Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation when the ratio between the frequencies of the periodic solution of the unperturbed system (Hopf bifurcation) and the external periodic perturbation is 1:2. Our analysis is based on center manifold reduction theory.

The behaviour of a multi-degree-of-freedom vibro-impact system is studied using a 2 degree-of-freedom impact oscillator as a motivating example. A multi-modal model is used to simulate the behaviour of the system, and examine the complex dynamics which occurs when both degrees of freedom are subjected to a motion limiting constraint. In particular, the chattering and sticking behaviour which occurs for low forcing frequencies is discussed. In this region, a variety of non-smooth events can occur, including newly studied phenomena such as sliding bifurcations. In this paper, the multiple non-smooth events which can occur in the 2 degree-of-freedom system are categorised, and demonstrated using numerical simulations.

This paper analyzes the hyperchaotic behaviors of the newly presented simplified Lorenz system by using a sinusoidal parameter variation and hyperchaos control of the forced system via feedback. Through dynamic simulations which include phase portraits, Lyapunov exponents, bifurcation diagrams, and Poincaré sections, we find the sinusoidal forcing not only suppresses chaotic behaviors, but also generates hyperchaos. The forced system also exhibits some typical bifurcations such as the pitchfork, period-doubling, and tangent bifurcations. Interestingly, three-attractor coexisting phenomenon happens at some specific parameter values. Furthermore, a feedback controller is designed for stabilizing the hyperchaos to periodic orbits, which is useful for engineering applications.

In this paper, we propose a non-smooth Filippov system that describes the interaction of the pest and natural enemy with considering time delay, which represents the change in the growth rate of natural enemies before it is released to prey on pests. When the number of the pest is below the threshold, no control is applied; otherwise, control measures will be adopted. We discuss the stability of the equilibria and the existence of Hopf bifurcation. The results show that the Hopf bifurcation occurs when the time delay passes through some critical values. By applying the Filippov convex method, we obtain the dynamics of the sliding mode. The solutions of the system eventually tend toward the regular equilibrium, the pseudo-equilibrium or a standard periodic solution. Numerical simulations show that time delay plays an important role in local and global sliding bifurcations. We can obtain boundary focus bifurcations from boundary node bifurcations by varying time delay. Furthermore, touching, buckling and crossing bifurcations can be obtained frequently by increasing time delay. The results can provide some insights in pest control.

A delayed Lotka?CVolterra predator-prey system of population allelopathy with discrete delay and distributed maturation delay for the predator population described by an integral with a strong delay kernel is considered. By linearizing the system at the positive equilibrium and analyzing the associated characteristic equation, the asymptotic stability of the positive equilibrium is investigated and Hopf bifurcations are demonstrated. Furthermore, the direction of Hopf bifurcation and the stability of the bifurcating periodic solutions are determined by the normal form theory and the center manifold theorem for functional differential equations. Finally, some numerical simulations are carried out for illustrating the theoretical results.

In this paper the non-linear dynamics of a state-dependent delay model of the turning process is analyzed. The size of the regenerative delay is determined not only by the rotation of the workpiece, but also by the vibrations of the tool. A numerical continuation technique is developed that can be used to follow the periodic orbits of a system with implicitly defined state-dependent delays. The numerical analysis of the model reveals that the criticality of the Hopf bifurcation depends on the feed rate. This is in contrast to simpler constant delay models where the criticality does not change. For small feed rates, subcritical Hopf bifurcations are found, similar to the constant delay models. In this case, periodic orbits coexist with the stable stationary cutting state and so there is the potential for large amplitude chatter and bistability. For large feed rates, the Hopf bifurcation becomes supercritical for a range of spindle speeds. In this case, stable periodic orbits instead coexist with the unstable stationary cutting state, removing the possibility of large amplitude chatter. Thus, the state-dependent delay in the model has a kind of stabilizing effect, since the supercritical case is more favorable from a practical viewpoint than the subcritical one.

In this paper, a finance system with time delay is considered. By linearizing the system at the unique equilibrium and analyzing the associated characteristic equation, the asymptotic stability of the unique equilibrium is investigated and Hopf bifurcations are demonstrated. Furthermore, the direction of Hopf bifurcation and the stability of the bifurcating periodic solutions are determined by the normal form theory and the center manifold theorem for functional differential equations. Finally, some numerical simulations are carried out for illustrating the theoretical results.

The mathematical models representing machine tool chatter dynamics have been cast as differential equations with delay. In this paper, non-linear delay differential equations with periodic delays which model the machine tool chatter with continuously modulated spindle speed are studied. The explicit time-dependent delay terms, due to spindle speed modulation, are replaced by state-dependent delay terms by augmenting the original equations. The augmented system of equations is autonomous and has two pairs of pure imaginary eigenvalues without resonance. The reduced bifurcation equation is obtained by making use of Lyapunov-Schmidt Reduction method. By using the reduced bifurcation equations, the periodic solutions are determined to analyze the tool motion. Analytical results show both modest increase of stability and existence of periodic solutions near the new stability boundary.

A weakly nonlinear oscillator is modeled by a differential equation. A superharmonic resonance system can have a saddle-node bifurcation, with a jumping transition from one state to another. To control the jumping phenomena and the unstable region of the nonlinear oscillator, a combination of feedback controllers is designed. Bifurcation control equations are derived by using the method of multiple scales. Furthermore, by performing numerical simulations and by comparing the responses of the uncontrolled system and the controlled system, we clarify that a good controller can be obtained by changing the feedback control gain. Also, it is found that the linear feedback gain can delay the occurrence of saddle-node bifurcations, while the nonlinear feedback gain can eliminate saddle-node bifurcations. Feasible ways of further research of saddle-node bifurcations are provided. Finally, we show that an appropriate nonlinear feedback control gain can suppress the amplitude of the steady-state response.

We investigate a typical aerofoil section under dynamic stall conditions, the structural model is linear and the aerodynamic loading is represented by the Leishman–Beddoes semi-empirical dynamic stall model. The loads given by this model are non-linear and non-smooth, therefore we have integrated the equation of motion using a Runge–Kutta–Fehlberg algorithm equipped with event detection. The main focus of the paper is on the interaction between the Hopf bifurcation typical of aero-elastic systems, which causes flutter oscillations, and the discontinuous definition of the stall model. The paper shows how the non-smooth definition of the dynamic stall model can generate a non-smooth Hopf bifurcation. The mechanisms for the appearance of limit cycle attractors are described by using standard tools of the theory of dynamical systems such as phase plots and bifurcation diagrams.

This paper is aimed at presenting the nonlinear flutter peculiarities of a cantilevered plate with motion-limiting constraints in subsonic flow. A non-smooth free-play structural nonlinearity is considered to model the motion constraints. The governing nonlinear partial differential equation is discretized in space and time domains by using the Galerkin method. The equilibrium points and their stabilities are presented based on qualitative analysis and numerical studies. The system loses its stability by flutter and undergoes the limit cycle oscillations (LCOs) due to the nonlinearity. A heuristic analysis scheme based on the equivalent linearization method is applied to theoretical analysis of the LCOs. The Hopf and two-multiple semi-stable limit cycle bifurcation bifurcations are supercritical or subcritical, which is dependent on the location of the motion constraints. For some special cases the bifurcations are, interestingly, both supercritical and subcritical. The influence of varying parameters on the dynamics is discussed in detail. The results predicted by the analysis scheme are in good agreement with the numerical ones.

This paper deals with dynamic behaviors on Hopfield type of ring neural network of four neurons having a pair of short-cut connections with multiple time delays. By suitable transformation and under certain assumptions on multiple time delays, the model is reduced to four dimensional nonlinear delay differential equations with three delays. Regarding these time delays as parameters, delay independent sufficient conditions for no stability switches of the trivial equilibrium of the linearized system are derived. Conditions for stability switching with respect to one delay parameter which is not associated with short-cut connection are obtained. Hopf bifurcations with respect to two other delays which are associated with short-cut connection are also obtained. Using the normal form method and center manifold theory, the direction of the Hopf bifurcation, stability and the properties of Hopf-bifurcating periodic solutions are determined. Using numerical simulations of the nonlinear model, different rich dynamical behaviors such as quasiperiodicity, torus attractor and chaotic-bands are also observed for suitable range of three delay parameters. Lyapunov exponents are also calculated using the AnT 4.669 tool for verification of chaotic dynamics.
